Im going 8/13 Con 6/5 UKIP in a match bet... any takers?

EDIT: First to comment on this thread, first in the world to offer a price on this market!
  • Now that Girls Aloud have split up, perhaps Cheryl Cole may wish to stand as the Labour candidate in South Shields.

30% of the electorate voted Labour in 2010: 52.0% on a 57.7% turnout.

I don't think UKIP can win but they might put up a surprisingly good showing as the Con and LD votes collapse to deposit-losing territory. Both of them are likely to receive around 5% IMO.

You mean she would Call the Shots?

    :)

  • There's two ways to read this.

    1) David Miliband has realised that Ed is on course for a handsome majority and thus Labour won't want him as Leader and he doesn't want to serve under his brother

    or

    2) First Milburn, then Purnell now David M, the Blairties in Parliament are less spotted than a Scottish Tory and realise that Labour are more left leaning than they have been in recent years.

and finally, David M must regret not following James Purnell's lead in June 2009

So Ed Miliband has effectively ended his brother's career- not sure how the Labour leader spins that.

After all the criticism that Louise Mensch got on this site for stepping down to head to New York to be with her husband, I wonder if the same posters will direct the same criticism at David Miliband for heading off to New York and pastures new?

I think the closest result in South Shields in recent times was 1983 when Labour's majority over the Tories was reduced to 15.6%:

    Lab: 19,055 (46.5%)
    Con: 12,653 (30.9%)
    SDP: 9,288 (22.7%)

    Lab maj: 6,402 (15.6%)

It would be silly criticism. Part of Mensch's problem was that she had only been an MP for a couple of years before she packed it in, which looks bad for a number of reasons. At least David Miliband served his constituents for twelve years.

However it's interesting to speculate why he may be going mid-term, rather than waiting for the next election.

He must really be missing Louise Mensch.....

Either this has been the plan for a couple of years and Ed's known about it all along, or it's a result of Ed's weakness in just not working out how to handle his brother in parliament. Big loss for Labour, but he's looked disinterested for a while.

The rule of thumb i just made up out of thin air is take 1/3 from each of Labour, Tory and LD and add them then check if that number is higher than the current front-runner minus 1/3. If it is then Ukip are a contender.

I haven't actually checked this against any actual data or anything but regardless i still think it's probably a *very* rough guide.

As to Milliband - another Blairite purged, fine by me.

The only New York based international charity which could justify David Miliband's desertion of his brother's cause would be UNICEF.

Officers of the UN charity are elected for three year terms. This would position David for a return to the UK in 2016.

Looks like the perfect seat for a LD collapse, like other strong Labour areas, but even if they didn't mostly go to Labour, I doubt the votes lost would help anyone contesting it enough to challange the incumbent party. A shame, I like a good tight by-election.

I would not be completely surprised if the Lib Dems do not contest this byelection . They leave contesting most of the wards in this parliamentary seat to the old Liberal Party . A number of wards have substantial votes for Independent candidates notably Victor Thompson who also stood at the last GE .and a couple of wards are fought regularly by the Progressives .

No I'm not joking, and I reject the idea it is hypocritical - it would be if the situations were the same, and they're not and there's no need to pretend it is. Similar, but not the same. It's the context which makes the same action, standing down for a different career/other personal reasons, different. Standing down midterm for your own personal reasons is letting down the people you asked to elect you a bit, but doing so in your first term is much more of a slap in the face.

I don't blame anyone for stepping down from public office for whatever purpose, - good luck to them in whatever future path they have decided to pursue - but my feeling is that the public are entitled to be selfishly indignant at people jumping off early, as when someone asks to have power over us, saying they are the person to represent us in government, we expect them to actually do it, and get shirty when they don't and say 'you know what? On second thoughts, I don't actually care about serving the people of nowheresville'.

If you don't even make it through your first term, you will get more of a reaction against you, and I think that's fair. I
