Now London hospital occupation is decreasing, likely the deaths peak by actual date was Tuesday/Wednesday - will be interesting to see where the number ends up. At the moment the rolling 7 day average is at 21. Likely to tick up as lagged data comes in, but given it peaked at 200 last year looks like we're in the 10-20% of last year's daily death peaks territory, and the much quicker wave length means total deaths in wave likely to be half or less of that figure. Omicron is going to struggle to match a routine year of flu deaths.0

I don't know. In principle one would've thought that hospitals would want to concentrate on minimising the risk to the categories of patients most vulnerable to Covid (e.g. in immunology clinics) and not be so worried about fit thirtysomethings with broken bones ending up with a snotty nose as well. However, I doubt that it's that simple: there are most likely potentially vulnerable patients (the elderly for starters) scattered all over hospitals, and it would be hard of not impossible to segregate them.alex_ said:

The best solution is probably, therefore, to carpet bomb healthcare workers with tests, to pick up and remove new cases speedily but also to allow affected workers to come back again the moment that they begin to test clear. What is the stated purpose? Increasingly with omicron the only point of restrictions is to push infections into the future. It’s probably past the point where they can have much effect on the overwhelming or otherwise of hospitals. And even the staffing issues will begin to resolve themselves naturally before very long. With the schools back, I don't expect as consistent a fall as was seen through lockdown last year, but I think we'll go into a pattern of oscillation, similar to the Summer/Autumn Delta wave, but at higher case levels for a good while.
The worst of the hospitalisation wave is yet to come in the Regions and the next 2-3 weeks will be hairy, but my mid point guess is that we won't quite blow the NHS. Nevertheless, I'm just edging to the WfH mandates running to February half term and masking a bit longer still.
From late spring, May time I reckon, a lot of the basics will be gradually toned down - isolation rules, recording COVID out with the normal weekly infection monitoring and next winter will be handled much more BAU basis, though still with a weather eye on variants that all look suspicious like Omicron redux.0 -
