To be fair to Liz Truss, she has at least been getting on with the job of achieving the continuity trade deals to replace a small amount of what we would otherwise be losing. It's no more than any average minister in her position should be able to do, but in this government a spot of average competence does rather stand out as excellent in comparison to, say, the Education department. Of course, she massively overstates the importance of these deals, which no doubt endears her to the faithful. The 100-1 does look worth a small punt.

The Cabinet minister who seems to be most underrated is Thérèse Coffey, who seems to be quietly getting on with her job and under whose management the DWP seems to have managed the huge additional take-up of Universal Credit without any of the usual screw-ups. I suppose quiet competence counts for little, though. You need to add a Sunak-style dose of self-promotion.

Coffey has a +41% rating ie higher than Boris and most of the Cabinet with ConHome readers so not bad
Coffey is another woman at or near the top of government with a background in science (she has a PhD in chemistry).
I quite like the theory that party leaders/PMs often exhibit opposite characteristics to their predecessors. Coffey is very much the opposite of Johnson in lots of ways and science backgrounds may become more valued again post covid.

It's going to be approved by a lot of countries in a very short timespan. The exact timing probably tells you very little about how thorough it has been.

The pendulum has swung and It doesn't look like it'll swing back soon.

Quite the opposite. He's been telling them the truth - that Covid is real and we have to do something about it, that we might just possibly want an agreement with that large landmass hovering off our shores - and they don't much care for it.
So how do you explain your leader coming 22nd in a Tory popularity contest behind at least a dozen no one's ever heard of

Labour (alleged) corruption is so unsophisticated compared to Conservative Government corruption. The former is called fraud, the latter, competitive tendering.

Decent article in why the FDA is so much slower.
    https://www.statnews.com/2020/12/04/how-key-decisions-slowed-fdas-review-of-covid-19-vaccine-but-also-gave-it-important-data/

One of the time consuming things is that they reanalyse the raw data to double check the pharma’s statistical analysis.

Given the lethality of Covid, I think the risk/benefit analysis is in favour of our approach, FWIW.

Why did the police take his blog at face value?
I knew a colleague who swore he left UEA (Norwich) at 2pm, to give a 5 pm lecture at Exeter (around 300 miles) and made it on time... Lots of motorway, but even so...
Even less plausible given he would have had to drive past Birmingham or London. Sometimes takes three hours just to travel the M42, and as for the M25...

Allegations of witness intimidation though might be a bit more serious.

Johnson’s wet dream scenario is that France veto a deal because it is too generous to the UK, and the EU go ahead and implement it anyway, thereby confirming a loss of sovereignty and that we were right to leave.

It is slightly less likely than him being faithful to PNN, but it would be perfection.

I find that extremely unlikely to be the case, there's no way that Macron is looking at the same information as everyone else in the world and has decided that Paris will benefit while the rest of the world decides that it will be Singapore and New York. Paris is and always will be an also-ran for finance, even French banks don't want to go back and have refused the orders many times.

I see Thérèse Coffey uses a l'accent grave and a l'accent aigu in her name.

Sorry, that means she's French, that makes her unfit to be Prime Minister or a cabinet minister of the United Kingdom, a cabinet minister or Prime Minister of France maybe.

I bet she sings La Marseillaise instead of GSTQ.

This could have interesting ramifications, and not just because of Joe Anderson.

Allegations of bribery and dodgy deals relating to development are sadly not that unusual for Liverpool politics.
Allegations of witness intimidation though might be a bit more serious.
I recall Private Eye having a regular feature entitled ‘Murkeyside’.
Apparently the 72-year old from Aigburth who has been arrested alongside Joe Anderson is Derek Hatton.
Is it wrong of me to have burst out laughing?
Yes, it is wrong to laugh.

You should have quoted the "dynamics of history inevitability". Then laughed like a drain.

I didn't know that Truss experimented with the Lib Dems at university. Presumably her Labour-supporting parents were glad to see her go full Tory, better to pick a side at least.

She was a Republican as well.
I knew there was a reason I didn't like her.
Is why I like her, we Tory Republicans generally don't admit our opposition to a hereditary head of state in public.

    But we do exist.
Aren't there a surprisingly large number of Tory Republicans on this site? I've always found the Royal Family the least offensive part of the English class system, personally. On balance I think they're a good thing, although you could make a case for their abolition on compassionate grounds.
Couldn't agree more. Wouldn't wish it on anyone.

    Yes.
Interesting to note that Truss has a problem due to her affairs but for Boris (being male) it wasn't a problem.
True, but its not just about being male. If Starmer or perhaps even Sunak were found to have affairs it would be problematic for them. Like Trump, Johnson's lack of shame or remorse makes him invulnerable to scandal.
Yep. No standards thus no hypocrisy and no judgement. People seem fine with this. Beats me why.

Yes, went to a drinks reception with her last year, she was very knowledgeable and with a PhD in Chemistry and business experience at Mars makes a change for those complaining there are too many PPE grad, ex Spads in Cabinet

If Presidents see their parties hold both chambers of Congress they then tend to see them get trounced in their first midterms as they get all the blame eg Trump in 2018, Obama in 2010, Clinton in 1994, Ike in 1954 etc, Presidents without their party in complete control of Congress tend to do better in their first midterms eg Bush in 2002, Bush in 1990, Reagan in 1982, Nixon in 1970

I think you might have put your finger on a slight problemette with their position...
It's about money, not fish, according to the Telegraph.

Macron is gambling that France could be a winner from a no-deal Brexit
Paris is the only real contender to London as the Continent’s finance hub, and a no-deal Brexit may well give it the edge

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2020/12/04/macron-gambling-france-could-winner-no-deal-brexit/
Is 'Paris/Frankfurt to be new financial hub for continental Europe' the pro-EU version of 'German car makers will save Brexit'?
There is a slight difference: Paris and Frankfurt really, really, really want to be the twin financial hubs of Europe and probably have a means of getting there. The German car makers never wanted to influence the UK's Brexit agreement and wouldn't have been able to do so if they had.
I really want to shag Natalie Portman, I also have the means of doing so, just need to fly to New York, find her and hope for the best.
I always get her to come to me, but then I'm lazy.
And you're more likely to shag Natalie Portman than Paris is to becoming a global financial hub.

Yes, went to a drinks reception with her last year, she was very knowledgeable and with a PhD in Chemistry and business experience at Mars makes a change for those complaining there are too many PPE grad, ex Spads in Cabinet
    Did you hold your own?
She was quite personable to talk to so as much as I could, she is actually the closest thing to a British Merkel
What was your and Tessy's toon?

Somebody genuinely did tell me once that they hadn’t got their homework because, ‘the dog ate my USB pen.’

The more amazing part was when I rang home I found they were telling the truth.

His winning defence seems to have been a told a load of lies.

Feel brie to do a really good cheese pun.
Ummm - why? Is there some dairy significance to Exeter, Norwich and the routes between that I’ve missed?

I mean the Birmingham route does go fairly close to Cheddar, but even so...
That's not one of your best but thank you anywhey.
I've been thinking about this caerphilly, and I can't for the life of me see where the cheese theme comes from. Explain?

There was a time when the zeitgeist was happy with liars whether daubed on the side of busses or sent out on tweets but not now. The pendulum has swung and It doesn't look like it'll swing back soon.

Quite the opposite. He's been telling them the truth - that Covid is real and we have to do something about it, that we might just possibly want an agreement with that large landmass hovering off our shores - and they don't much care for it.
You sound disaffected with your rank and file. Promising development.
Hardly my rank and file - ConHome is to actual Conservatives what Red Rose Twitter is to Labour. I care much more about the national polling than what those knobbers think.

They should really ask a supplementary to find out what percentage of respondents are following Toby on Covid. That would tell us all we need to know.

So how do you explain your leader coming 22nd in a Tory popularity contest behind at least a dozen no one's ever heard of
At least we can see why it is handy to have Goofy Gavin still around.

    Why is milling so unpopular?
Because although she’s a nice enough person, she’s a bit shit.
Considering the competition, that is insufficient explanation

She’s a party chairman nobody outside her constituency has ever heard of.

Which rather sums up the problem.
