If it's not a Christmas movie how come the hero's estranged wife lives in *Santa* Monica?

So: what defines an Xmas movie?

Is it the presence of Santa Claus?
    Is it an uplifting moral?
Is it the existence of characters who think they deserve something for nothing?
Is it the presence of an older, overweight actor?
Is it the timing of the movie?

Yes to the FIRST and fifth question.

    The setting also.

I presume its like xmas jumpers. Brilliant when noone cares, but sort of awful when anyones watching.

Die Hard is a weird exception in that there's no smug girl. Otherwise I'd have said a smug girl was essential. (Perhaps in life too :))

Of course it is. I read about it in Time magazine.
  • Clearly this is another of TSE's many delusions.

Empire Magazine not only had Die Hard as a Christmas film but, moreover, had a poll which showed it was the number 1 Christmas film of all time.

I assume this thread header is yet another sign that TSE dislikes both polls and experts.

One question: is the movie's central narrative explicitly talking about "the spirit of Christmas"

A Christmas film is something you can watch with very young children, Die Hard falls on that count.

Anyhoo, in important statistical news of today, I have completed my massive database comparing Labour’s results in Wales with their results the last time they won a majority.

The results were - interesting. Possibly too interesting to do them full justice in a thread header. They were also not quite what I had expected. However, I can see a few possible implications for the punters among us.

So I will see if I can pull something together over the next few days.

Is it the presence of Santa Claus?
    Is it an uplifting moral?
Is it the existence of characters who think they deserve something for nothing?
Is it the presence of an older, overweight actor?
Is it the timing of the movie?

    What about Bad Santa ?

Yes, it is a very fine film, just not a Christmas film.

Just watch the first three films of the franchise, films four and five are shite.
Isn’t it a ..... um ..... adventure film? With Bruce Willis?

Bear in mind my top 4 perfect films are Casablanca, Brief Encounter, Some Like It Hot and Dr Strangelove. With honourable mentions for Don’t Look Now, Cinema Paradiso and Godfather 1 & 2.

It....er, well, does not really seem to be for me .......
It has the Best. Baddy. Ever. Alan Rickman, your light forever shines.

And Ode to Joy in the soundtraack.
One of his finest roles - though I thought his Obadiah Slope in the Barchester Chronicles was if anything more chilling...

I don’t recall that from the Trollope...
  • I'd like to know if TSE thinks Home Alone is a Christmas movie.

Die Hard is as Christmassy as Chris Rea's Driving Home for Christmas. The YouGov doesn't apply as Die Hard is about Christmas. It is about one cop saving the day to get home for Christmas.

This poll presumably determines matters for a generation. Or just over 5 years as we say in Scotland.

We watched Home Alone on Christmas Eve. Instead of Miracle on 34th Street. Democracy is seriously overrated.

I’ve had a pretty good run over the last few years. Indyref, Brexit, 2.5 general elections out of 3, but being outvoted on Christmas Eve, put it all into perspective. Gives me a better insight into how Alastair feels.

I have that as my Christmas jumper. Even has bullet holes in. I bought it when I was forced to wear a Christmas jumper by a democratic vote on the dress code for a watch chrimbo piss up a few years ago. . I am not very chrismassy.

Yes well... That all messed up.

And it was due to Vanilla. (No great surprise.)

I'm reversing the changes and this should appear again to all momentarily...

A Christmas film is something you can watch with very young children, Die Hard falls on that count.
So does Gremlins. Another clearly Christmas Movie.

Brief Encounter is a fine film - just not in my top ten, I’m afraid.

My kids have watched Gremlins from a very young age.

I'd ban all children from watching that film because I was driven up the wall with the conversation 'Daddy I want a real Mogwai for my birthday/Christmas present'

I thought this was a unique opportunity as PB went down for good. My "last?" would appear forever, etched as an image on the event horizon of the PB black hole.
