Bercow will not be missed. Good riddance. I’d make him wait a very long time for Ermine.0

I'm fairly sure Bridgen's intervention on a NI referendum is about being able to vote against MV4 when it doesn't contain said referendum rather than actually wanting one. A legal and post legislative referendum in NI isn't happening before Spring at the earliest. And the enabling legislation would be a Christmas Tree bill for both anti No Dealers and the Lords. That's before People's Vote ask why GB can't vote on the WA if NI can.0

Should they still be called rebels? Ex-rebels perhaps

P.S I see in the replies many are also querying the use of rebels, but for a completely different reason that they think it is a pejorative or because they have integrity (which means you cannot rebel somehow?). Weird.0 -

It is a period of civil war. REMAINER spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil TORY EMPIRE. During the battle, Remainer spies managed to steal secret plans to the Tories' ultimate weapon, the PROROGATION, an armoured space station with enough power to destroy an entire parliamentary session!
Pursued by the Tories' sinister agents, Princess Nicola Anna Heidi Jo races home aboard her battle bus, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her Party and restore Freedom of Movement to the Continent…0 -

I will call you naiive. I think that if such rationality was going to win out it would have done so before the last extension. That was the moment people had to stand up and decide if they would compromise on the extreme positions they had adopted or kick the can. Some did seek compromise (including May talking to Labour, this is not me saying people can only compromise toward one goal), but MPs as a whole decided to kick the can. They have decided by majority once more to kick the can rather than retreat from extreme positions, positions which have only grown more extreme. Why would rationality and compromise break out now, but not earlier?Byronic said:

To 'save the country'? The ultra leavers have swayed most of the moderate leavers to the view that no deal is the only way to save the country by ensuring the referendum is delivered. The ultra remainers have swayed most of the moderate remainers that resisting any leave option is saving the country because that is what staying in the EU does.
That's the problem with hoping people will wake up to rationality, that they will compromise to 'save the country'. Almost all of them will think they are already doing both.0 -

It felt like a kick on the nuts when I was told he was going to resign, and it still does.

Agreed. My hunch is, if the Tory Cabinet can settle on a deal, it would pass the Commons. I'm not sure Corbyn would whip against it, but even if he did, dozens of Labour MPs would rebel, out of fear of No Deal.nico67 said:
As an ardent Remainer at this point I’d accept a deal that led to an orderly withdrawal . A no deal would trash relations with the EU for years and at least with a deal the country has a chance of moving on . A no deal would lead to years of bitter acrimony, even worse than now.oxfordsimon said:
Indeed. There is no form of a deal that can get through this House.GIN1138 said:
This House Of Common will never vote for any deal.DanSmith said:Basically all these defeats meaning nothing if Boris comes back to the commons next month with a deal that gets voted through. He's then getting a landslide in an election very shortly afterwards. I fear the remainers have blundered by not taking the election.
If a deal comes forward then I think MPs will be under tremendous pressure to pass it.
I think Brexit is a disaster but a deal now is the only way to save the country .
Sensible Remainers will see a deal as a possible way of getting the UK back into the EU, one day. Sensible Leavers will take whatever is on offer, now, as Brexit itself is imperilled.
Call me naive, but I still believe rationality will win. In the end.0 -

We can’t relive the alternate timeline but it might have involved a second Scottish referendum that was successful, and/or an even more asymmetric devolution settlement that strained the Union and stoked English nationalism, a further European treaty that accumulated more powers to the EU - further dividing the UK on the subject - and unsustainable levels of deficit and public spending as various special interests pleaded their case.
It would not have been a particularly stable or successful Government, and our economic recovery and employment would have suffered.
So chaos could have occurred, just of a different kind. That’s where the country is at.0 -

So ultimately this past few days has seen yet again lots of blood and thunder (and controversy, and drama, resignations, defections, votes, filibustering, elections talk, emergency debates, government defeats, grandstanding, constitutional chaos, rumours and, and, and...) but still, nothing actually concretely resolved in the ongoing Brexit grind.
Now back to not much happening, more back to clock ticking down to the last few days with very little in the meantime.
Every time you think...this will be the time...and every time it isn't. Just yet another ratcheting up.
A situation we've been in before and almost certainly will be again at some point.0 -
