    I’m aware of the hand on knee story, but even I’m shocked that’s he’s resigning over that, given JHB’s response. That’s why I thought is something worse than that story coming out?
    Hence why my initial reaction is did he just want out - if not that or that there is worse to come out, it does seem very odd. Sure, as the first big name to own up to something there might have been pressure to resign, but given JHB's response, I really didn't get the impression there was that much pressure, in fact I don't recall anyone even suggesting it.
    Prior to this I would have had Fallon as a dark horse candidate for PM - stolid, but not as grey as Hammond, and had a bit of a talent for being an attack dog without provoking the sort of instinctual dislike of regular attack dogs.

    Given his reasons for going, hopefully this will encourage more true accusations as people see there are consequences, even as there will no doubt be an increase in false accusations as well, since such is life.

    I doubt it makes much difference at all, Corbyn was going to be PM of a minority Labour government reliant on SNP and LD support if there was an election today yesterday and would be PM of a minority Labour government if there was an election tomorrow. However the election is not tomorrow.

    His wikipedia page has already gotten confused - Secretary of State for Defence from July 1901 - November 1934 seems wrong.

    Someone in the press must have something else on him - making a clumsy pass at a journalist 15 years ago really isn’t a resigning matter, especially when compared to allegations out there against others.

    I'm a big believer in precedent, so I'm looking at junior ministers from the department that has responsibility for energy.

    Jo Johnson or Richard Harrington then. Well I'd heard of one of them.

    He never served as a shadow minister under IDS and Howard.

    Well sure, but if there isn't more emerging on Fallon, then the list of those to fall on swords could be very high, as the bar would have been set low.

    Considering there was no 'Secretary of State for Defence' until 1964 that seems unlikely on a number of levels!

    (There was a Minister of Defence and a Secretary of State for War. The two were combined, along with the Admiralty and Air Ministry, after Profumo.)

    Evening all :)

    I'm genuinely surprised and like many I suspect my initial reaction was to wonder if there's more out there than simply the whole Hartley-Brewer knee interaction 15 years ago which, given Hartley-Brewer's reaction and details of far more serious matters now emerging seems relatively trivial.

    It seems Fallon sets very high standards for himself as some representative of the Armed Forces which is laudable but a tad contrived. I don't know whether other Defence Secretaries have seen themselves in those terms.

    It doesn't seem to be a wholly political act as there is no general reshuffle so it seems just curious.

    Please no Richard Harrington. My local MP was in the DWP with him, and I joked with her that he would be the one who would be promoted to the cabinet, thanks to his business connections, and not her. I look forward to being proved correct on that score...............

    I think the Tories aren't short of potential defence and related ministers - and surely a great opportunity to blood Eagles' favourite Johnny Mercer into a junior ministerial role.

    Mrs May has been presented with the ideal opportunity for the required wide ranging Ministerial reshuffle, sweeping out the duds and promoting the younger talent. Sadly, she will probably flunk it.

    I work for an organisation that has links to the MoD and I havent heard of any new issues recently - there are always stories about project overruns, cock-ups etc and everyone knows there is pressure on the budget but Fallon seemed quite well-regarded as S of S in most quarters.

    I’m aware of the hand on knee story, but even I’m shocked that’s he’s resigning over that, given JHB’s response. That’s why I thought is something worse than that story coming out?
    Hence why my initial reaction is did he just want out - if not that or that there is worse to come out, it does seem very odd. Sure, as the first big name to own up to something there might have been pressure to resign, but given JHB's response, I really didn't get the impression there was that much pressure, in fact I don't recall anyone even suggesting it.
    Prior to this I would have had Fallon as a dark horse candidate for PM - stolid, but not as grey as Hammond, and had a bit of a talent for being an attack dog without provoking the sort of instinctual dislike of regular attack dogs.
    Yes, I don’t remember any calls for Fallon to resign.

    I remember that there a few people who thought Fallon could be PM. Personally, I was always unconvinced but not because I anticipated this happening! I doubted that Fallon, or indeed that any of the current cabinet members will be the best leader because there seems to be an obsession with this idea that the ‘new generation’ of Tories, will be the saviours of the Tory party.

    Indeed. It is also pretty certain that the amount and variety of sex going on at any one time is a constant. Look beneath the surface of straitlaced societies like the Victorians and you find post boy brothels and so on. So what we are seeing is a periodic fit of morality rather than an objective upsurge in misconduct.

    Oh there will undoubtedly be false accusations - things need to not get out of hand, as we do want the inappropriate to stop being inappropriate (I would think at that level apology would be sufficient) and the truly vile to be exposed, but the innocent will be tested. That's abundantly clear given people who have not committed even an indiscretion were included on the sex pest list apparently, for their sexual quirks or infidelity, when frankly that's nobody's business.
