No, not at all. When was the last 5ime a government called a referendum without a plan for a "change" vote?Scott_P said:
Non sequitur much?ThreeQuidder said:Yes there was. They called the referendum.
Asking people to vote places no obligation on the party campaigning for one side to plan what those on the other side will implement.
Not even Trump is stupid enough to claim that...0 -

Your assumption is invalid. The Leave campaign does not now form the government. It therefore has no agency to do anything.viewcode said:

A two question ballot paper would have broken the cycle. That's the point of it. You just take two decisions on one day.Scott_P said:
I understand it perfectly, and there is no 2 option ballot paper that would produce a result that anyone is happier with than we have now.ThreeQuidder said:You do understand what I mean by a two question ballot paper, don't you?
I thought it was pretty clear but you don't seem to be grasping it.
Each of the 3 options is singularly more popular than the other 2.

No, because the outcome is determined entirely by the order of the questions (it being cyclical)ThreeQuidder said:A two question ballot paper would have broken the cycle. That's the point of it. You just take two decisions on one day.
If three ballot papers were printed with the questions on 3 different orders, they would have produced 3 different results.

In reality it is not our choice. We cannot impose a deal on the EU, if they don't want to play ball or cannot come to a decision (quite likely in my view) then It is Hard Brexit by default.0 -
Well that's obviously a nonsense. The only mandate is to Leave the political structures of the EU. As long as that is achieved, the democratic process has been respected.Scott_P said:

A two question ballot paper would have given a democratic endorsement of a way forward, but Cameron didn't trust us with that. He probably thought it would make it more likely that Leave would win question 1.

Here's a supposition. I'm putting it here because I suspect I'll need it later.
All the high-level Leaver ideologues: Hannan: Fraser Nelson, Matt Ridley, BoJo have spent most of their working lives writing articles, speaking to audiences, and blaming Remainians/EU for everything. And now at the moment of their greatest triumph, they stride into the halls of power, stand at the banked microphones and...open their laptops, write articles, speak to audiences, and blame Remainians/EU for everything.
Am I correct on thinking that, in the final analysis, that this is all they can actually do? That they've become overspecialised and can't actually do anything else?0 -
I almost forgot to post my weekly update of my average tracking poll.
Hillary 47 +0.5
Trump 42 -1.5
Hillary hit her highest since August 8th, though she is still hitting that 47% ceiling that she is since Sept. 26th.
Trump hit his lowest since August 24th, Trump has been dropping everyday since Oct.1st.
Since the first update.
Hillary 47 46.5 46.5 45.5 44.5 45 46 46.5 47 47 45
Trump 42 43.5 43 44 43.5 42 42 41 40.5 41 43
I guess barring a catastrophe for Hillary she is going to get 47%.
Trump is a like a roller-coaster.

Well that's all right then. In other news, the Samsung Note 7 recall is a massive blow to Samsung.
I'm starting to wonder if the battery is the cause, or at least the sole cause. Charging firmware might be another or, worse, the charging circuitry.
(I've mentioned in the past that Acorn had problems with Master 128's blowing up when their CMOS battery overcharged. That was down to two circuit tracks being sightly too close together. It took months to reproduce, but was fixed by producing a fault tree and changing anything that might have caused the problem).0 -

Despite the shock jock headline the meat in this story doesn't appear to be much more than that some of the training expenditure (which must be tiny in relation to the capital spend) is in areas of overlap between civilian and military nuclear technology?dugarbandier said:http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/11/opinion/britains-nuclear-cover-up.html?action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=opinion-c-col-right-region®ion=opinion-c-col-right-region&WT.nav=opinion-c-col-right-region

It is of course entirely possible to have a free trade area without free movement of people. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is an example of this......
In each European country there is a small, globe-trotting elite. They often sneer at their own countries and reject national identity as being parochial and old-fashioned. These people are often loud cheerleaders for the EU – while they themselves see themselves as cosmopolitan ‘Europeans’. To them, national borders are simply an archaic annoyance.
Remind you of anyone....?

yes, I saw that bit. I wondered what it says about British/US newspapers that it appears in a US one, rather than at home.CarlottaVance said:

As an oxford fdon, I didn't rate his writing very highly. ":Questionable and ruinous" — surely if it is ruinous, it's not questionable0 -

They're playing chicken with the RNC now - if you don't support the nominee - we won't support you. As Cernovich said - 'we'll be your best friend, or worst enemy'dugarbandier said:

Not really - it's more GOPers who've been become very Democrat in their policy outlook.
well, whoever wins will get to propose judges, right? but if yr trumpeters don't vote republican they're less likely to be able to influence the pick in the case where the donald doesn't winPlatoSaid said:
Provided you're loyal to the Party - that's fine even if it's very lukewarm or silent, it's the plotters/sabotagers who seem keener to keep their own bums on seats than choose SCOTUS etc.
This is being seen as a watershed moment - very like more Cameron vs Brexit/May. And if the Dems win, then they'll essentially control the Supreme Court for decades.0 -
Interesting. I guess that they mean that the project is to help with designing the nuclear reactors on the submarines rather than the bombs?dugarbandier said:http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/11/opinion/britains-nuclear-cover-up.html?action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=opinion-c-col-right-region®ion=opinion-c-col-right-region&WT.nav=opinion-c-col-right-region
