How did the Republicans contrive to lose this election against the worst Democrat candidate in decades? They need a reboot.
A very good question. I suspect at least a dozen books are already being written on that subject.
Trump has spent his life on TV, mostly peddiling slogans, commercials and a few lines in his shows.
He took Perot's and Buchanan's policies and merged them with some simple slogans and soundbites.
Add to the above the obsession of americans with celebrity and the incompetence, the indifference and the corruption of the republican establishment and he was without serious competition.

In theory some electors from some states would be bound to vote for Trump regardless if he resigned, however I expect in that case to be clear that the GOP controlled Congress would then select the new nominee as the next President since no one would have 270 electors.
It still works pretty well, and in the crazy year of 2016 anything could happen.
And there is already polling evidence that Republican voters would be really happy with such change.0 -

Good post. It isn't totally clear what will happen if Trump resigns, but the "name must be on the ballot for a candidate to win" argument is unconvincing. What about the write-in option? Sure, writing it in means writing it on the ballot, but if a write-in candidate wins who are the electors who will vote for them in the EC? If Trump resigns and the RNC choose Pence, and a few states say the only options are what are written on the ballot and then when they get taken to the Supreme Court by the Republican Party - who argue that a vote for Trump is now a vote for Pence - the states win, and then the Republican party continues to say the same thing, and "Trump" wins, and the electors vote for Pence anyway, are the states going to jail them? And even if they do, what happens then? Will they demand that Congress gives those electors' ballots back and accepts new ones from new electors? Where's that in the constitution? In practice, if Trump resigns the RNC will replace him and his replacement - probably Mike Pence - will very probably beat Clinton and become the new president. 1992 - Ted Weiss, congressman for New York and candidate for re-election, died on 14 September, and his name stayed on the ballots. The Democrats nominated a replacement, Jerrold Nadler, and told everyone that a vote for Weiss was a vote for Nadler. "Weiss", and therefore Nadler, won. Nadler was considered duly elected.
The name on the ballot isn't the issue. What is the issue is the role of the electors. And another issue is what Betfair will say. But if Trump gets replaced by Pence and Pence gets elected I don't think they'll have much room for manoeuvre even if they wanted it.0 -

"Grab 'em by the p***y" could mean it's all over by Monday.
Step 1. Trump resigns the nomination.
Step 2. RNC selects a new nominee as a fast as possible, probably Pence.
Step 3. Although Trump's name is still on the ballot, everyone will know that it would be a vote for Pence.
Step 4. Some states legally require their electors to vote only for the person on the ballot who won their state, in that case Trump would get some electoral votes so neither Pence or Hillary get to 270 electoral votes.
Step 5. The GOP controlled Congress votes, in the case no one gets to 270, for Pence to be President.
Optional Step 6: President Pence pardons Trump in exchange for his resignation.

Trump being trump, he'll skewer himself.
His campaign have to sit him down and drill him on this from every possible angle of attack. If he's going to apologise, he needs it to be watertight, coherent, concise, authentic - and preemptively cover for any other stuff in the clinton pipeline.

Have a look at Jill Harth's accusation against Trump from the 1990s:
"After business concluded, Harth and Houraney were on tour of Mar-a-Lago along with a group of young pageant contestants – Trump wanted to “see the quality of the girls he was sponsoring”, Harth recalled – when he pulled her aside into one of the children’s bedrooms."
“He pushed me up against the wall, and had his hands all over me and tried to get up my dress again,” Harth said, “and I had to physically say: ‘What are you doing? Stop it.’"

There's a lot of gold in the recent Wikileaks dump. If this were any other campaign, her dream of a world with "a hemispheric common market, with open trade and open borders" would really, really hurt her. But for Trump, it'll give him a slight edge in the Midwest and Nevada, and at worst, provide an unintentional dog whistle for those on the left who thought her too centist.0

With Trump standing, it is less of the dusting down the files from the correct filing cabinet, more having to sort through the rooms full of dirt to decide which to use.
It has clearly been carefully coordinated. The Clinton hand grenade at the end of the debate...crow barred in out of nowhere (I actually think she forgot and then went shit shit shit need to get this in)...then the daily drip drip drip of harmless stories all carefully coming out in a nice steady stream.0 -

You can tell when these type of scandals are been carefully coordinated. If a normal story breaks, all the editors send out their reports to dig the dirt and scoop the rivals asap, and you get this messy set of stories all appearing at the same time, often outlets talking over one another with similar story or incomplete story with a different angle on it.
When you get story, with each day a little bit being added, then just as it has died, another angle appears, and always just a single source has it...you know their has been planning and coordination.0 -

I'm back because I've heard some more developments are coming regarding Trump.
There are at least 4 more tapes to come out from the same NBC production team, that contain far far far worse stuff that Trump has said.
Basically the cameras and microphones where on all the time during the Apprentice's entire run when not filming, so you can imagine what Trump was saying behind the scenes and was secretly recorded.
It's the Hot Mic of all Hot Mics.
And there is more even worse to come after the tapes.
Hillary's camp is planning to leak them all one by one almost everyday till election day.
I guess that Trump has about till Monday to resign on his own terms, after that it would be so bad the RNC might be forced to move against him.0 -

It's the Hot Mic of all Hot Mics.
And there is more even worse to come after the tapes.
Hillary's camp is planning to leak them all one by one almost everyday till election day.
I guess that Trump has about till Monday to resign on his own terms, after that it would be so bad the RNC might be forced to move against him.0 -
The allegations of what kind of thing he said on set of the Apprentice have had an airing before.Speedy said:I'm back because I've heard some more developments are coming regarding Trump.

Knowing what is coming, the RNC will be forced to act if Trump doesn't fall on his sword.0 -
Anyone can see he's in a bad place! And you can't blame me for wanting to read up a little more gossip on the matter, can you?Speedy said:

On your edit - How can the RNC act. They are powerless to remove him?0 -
Trump's only option will be to claim equivalence with Bill Clinton.0

Even if he were literally dead, Trump (or his survivors) would have a hard time getting him dropped from a number of state ballots. And "Vote Trump, Get Pence!" as a slogan isn't all that convincing.
So, he'll get sworn into office and the next moment, hand the Speaker of the House a resignation letter? Pence, who just got sworn as Veep, then gets immediately sworn in as President. During those precious few seconds, will said Speaker be technically head of state?0
