As John Le Carré has died recently, I recommend this wonderful bit of writing by him about his father who was a notorious fraud and conman.

Remarkable echoes of Boris Johnson, including living for the day and for an unobtainable future but never for the time-being. How he could charm people who knew they were being sold a pup but went along with it anyway. A shared interest in Churchill. The levels of self-deception.

    Well worth a read.

Is there a reason why Johnson has suddenly out of the blue stopped referring to an Australian deal, and back to referring to "no deal, trading on WTO terms"? Is it that he's suddenly realised that he HAS to agree a deal and he's desperately trying to reverse ferret against the alternative?

Perhaps unexpectedly, California has given its 55 Electoral Votes to Biden, tipping him over the 270 mark.

    Congratulations President Elect Biden.
  • It's a shame they changed the rules so that the vice-president is no longer the runner-up for president.

On America, and the bonkers contortions some of the Republicans are using to argue that the fight goes on. On the logic of the Trump supporting argument there were 3 elections on Nov 3rd.

The most important was the Congressional election - because they decide what electoral college votes to approve on Jan 6th (and thank God the Democrats won that - which you could be forgiven for forgetting given the way the House election has been reported). The second most important was the State Legislature (!) elections, because they choose the representatives to send to the Electoral college.

Oh and there was one other election - the election for President. But really, that is pretty irrelevant in the grand scheme of things!

I suppose he used 'Australia-style deal' when he wanted the EU to think he was sanguine about a crash-out, and was trying to squeeze out any possible last-minute concessions. Now a deal's been agreed (probably), the priority is to make the ERG look like chumps for suggesting 'WTO terms' was anything than other dangerously idiotic.

As i mentioned earlier, it appears that a large chunk of the conspiracist supporting right have been genuinely shocked as they have been watching the "votes" roll in. That is the extent of the world that has been constructed to them by the Right wing media from the real wingnut sites right up to large chunks of Fox News.

I've been following a lot of this recently, and to be honest it really isn't that surprising that so many people believe that Trump has been robbed. These are people who don't have a great deal of understanding of the political or judicial process and desperately rely on their favoured media outlets to tell them what's going on. And they've been not just misled, but blatantly lied to repeatedly. And not just by fringe people. They have been lied to by individuals at the very top of US Govt all the way up to the President himself. If you don't receive any challenge to what you hear AT ALL, then you are likely to believe it.

    AG Bill Barr has resigned.

I really find it hard to conceive quite why Barr has now found the line where he cannot support Trump.

Though I suppose really him going was inevitable:

Attorney General Bill Barr has reportedly compared Donald Trump's attacks on him as a “deposed king ranting" after the president apparently raised the possibility of firing him.

    https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-election-2020/bill-barr-trump-election-biden-b1772174.html

I guess Barr was willing to do and say pretty much anything, so long as you actually manage to win the election first.

At one point I accidentally backed Biden -81.5 but realised a few minutes later when I was not green in the market I had intended, so was able to "red up" for only a small loss. Such are the perils of having 18 tabs open for my occasional price updates here!
