Although there has been no big breakthrough for LAB since double election loser Corbyn was replaced by Starmer a positive is that the party is now out of the 20s and the CON share is edging down.

Its remarkable how normal and how taken for granted the Tories getting 50% in the polls is now. The polls are comparable to those in 1998, but after a decade of the blues being in Downing Street..

Change in the polls, when it comes, will be sudden and dramatic I suspect. Some way off I should think. As Philip notes the Tories being so strong in the polls should be very unusual, yet that was the case pre rallying effect.

A very pertinent question which I hope there is a good answer to, as the decisions on that subject do look odd without such an explanation.

Off topoc. But what is it about garden centres? I can't honestly ever recall having been to onr. Allowing them to open isnt gping to materially affect my situation.

Yet again Mike has to spin a 17-23% lead as being only ok for the Conservatives if not just bad. Please cut the bias. Starmer had nowhere to go but up and hasn't had a breakthrough. He has a very safe and boring leadership election campaign which was a missed opportunity (Blair made this point). He may ask good question, if being a bit partisan in PMQs but it takes more than that.

We shall see. You lamented long and hard that a failure to lockdown sooner and harder was a shameful failure, yet now you're talking of it having done more harm than good. The gov will need to explain its decisions - and curious that I don't recall the opposition making a big show on the failure to do this before now despite it being out of step with many places - and who knows you might well change your tune.

Given the Tories have not won 50% of the vote since WW2, if them polling 50% or more still is a worry for them I hate to think what real problems would be

Enjoy it while you can... it's not going to last.

This time last year the Tories hit 19%; 50% today means nothing with no GE on the horizon.

Sounds a bit like they didn't think there was a point in bringing it in earlier because the virus was already widespread so it'd make no difference once everywhere was locked down internally anyway, but once we are easing out of lockdown it would make a difference and we can bring in the measures ahead of, and to hopefully prevent, a second wave. But I've no idea if that is the reasoning or even if it makes sense, but the delay in bringing it in until June makes me think that way.

Agree it's hardly a seismic shift but I suspect the majority of the population do visit garden centres, especially this time of year. They are not just for 'avid gardners'.

Also worth noting most garden centres do a lot of non-garden retailing these days.

Indeed. Given that it was 5 years yesterday since Cameron won a majority, you would imagine folk may be somewhat loath to envision 4 years into the future. What with a pandemic, global recession and all.

It's to include an incubation period. If you are in contact with a household member with the virus, you should self-isolate for 14 days, not 7. 7 is from the onset of symptoms.

It's particluarly galling as we have never sailed out of Southampton in nice weather. If we'd departed on Wednesday as planned we'd have had a beautiful few days heading out to the Atlantic.

On the other hand, in compensation we've had a beautiful few days at home in rural Dorset. We count our blessings.

Its remarkable how normal and how taken for granted the Tories getting 50% in the polls is now. The polls are comparable to those in 1998, but after a decade of the blues being in Downing Street..

Enjoy it while you can... it's not going to last.

This time last year the Tories hit 19%; 50% today means nothing with no GE on the horizon.
The Tories only hit 19% as most of their 2017 vote went to the Brexit Party who hit 25%, that will not happen again as Boris has reunited the pro Brexit vote and the right under his banner. Hence his landslide victory last year

Quarantining starts "at the end of May". So, in three weeks time when the problems are less severe, they'll implement it.

    It literally makes no sense.

There must be 10,000 beds around Heathrow in airport hotels, maybe 20,000, and they're all empty.

It's really not complicated to put people there for two weeks.

Any political commentator who thought the Tory vote in a General Election was anywhere near 19% was a pillock. Especially with Corbyn helming Labour.

The run up to the EU elections 2019 was marked by an army of those who would later vote for Boris having a larf. It was an election where you could do that. Nothing was at stake. Vote Brexit Party - and watch the commentariat piss their pants.

Also: "...from the end of May" WTAF!?
Sounds a bit like they didn't think there was a point in bringing it in earlier because the virus was already widespread so it'd make no difference once everywhere was locked down internally anyway, but once we are easing out of lockdown it would make a difference and we can bring in the measures ahead of, and to hopefully prevent, a second wave. But I've no idea if that is the reasoning or even if it makes sense, but the delay in bringing it in until June makes me think that way.
Also, why not be a bit smarter and have different countries with different risk tiers:

    - coming from South Korea? Come right in
    - coming from the US? Two week quarantine
    - coming from Mexico? No you're not

At this rate of easing lockdown (garden centres!) we will be with Buck Rodgers in the 25th century before pubs are open. Shall we all have a guess as to what extra treat we will have next week?
My suggestion would be to allow Music shops to open but only if they sell only woodwind and brass instruments - drums can be saved for the following weeks easing.

We have an 80 seat majority, I'm content to enjoy it for the next few years.

If we win a fifth consecutive election in 2024 that to be honest will be far more than I ever expected and if not c'est la vie.

Other than the most avid gardener I can't imagine too many others either.

Agree it's hardly a seismic shift but I suspect the majority of the population do visit garden centres, especially this time of year. They are not just for 'avid gardners'.

Also worth noting most garden centres do a lot of non-garden retailing these days.
Oh. I didn't know that. But then I've never been to one....what kinds of stuff do they sell? Am I in some weird minority in my total ignorance?
Clothes, food, books, cards, homeware, toys, lots of cheap old junk that plenty of people seem compelled to buy... Oh, and some plants and compost too.
They don't call them Thirtypoundlands for nothing
Ha! I'd not heard that but it is pretty accurate. There's obviously more money in selling expensive tat than plants. Don't forget the obligatory tea shop too, although that will presumably have to remain closed.

Garden centres are all very well for Middle England, but I'm not sure a big fanfare announcing that you can now go to one will go down that well in the Red Wall.

And ends holidays abroad for as long as it is in force

Unless you go by car, train, ferry or, dare I say it, cruise ship!

Anyone who thinks the Tories will get 50% in the next GE with the economy in tatters, a 5th wave of CV-19 likely filling the ICUs again, and a big chunk of loyal Tory voters having sadly voted their last is similarly deluded.

    Indeed.

I could never have voted for UKIP but I voted Brexit Party as a "sack Theresa May now" protest vote - my vote meant nothing more nor less than that.

Even voting BXP I still felt like a Tory in exile and I'm glad my vote was one of millions that saw the back of that horrid woman.
