  • We should have one X Factor and one Strictly thread a year. The principles behind betting on them are very closely related to the principles behind betting on politics.

Tamera is the best singer on X Factor, but she is currently fourth favourite at SPIN. Hannah is second best, but she is the outsider of the remaining contestants. The two favourites are a superannuated super-karaoke singer and a competent but fairly robotic Scottish lad. The reasons for this mismatch are to do with the electorate and the non-musical qualities of the contestants.

Rough Copy look like a buy on the index at 17 (third scores 20, second 30 and first 50). They look strong contenders for the top three and it's easy to see how they could do better than third.

I stopped watching X-Factor when Simon Cowell stopped judging.

    I hate myself for that.

Some of us had a bet on Ms Reid predicted that she would do well...

It cannot be 22 years since Freddie Mercury died! I still regret never catching Queen live, he was the ultimate showman.

And 22 years ago almost to the day I was working with Roger Taylor's partner/wife Debbie Leng.

IIRC, Queen caused a stir in the US when this video was aired for the first time, no one had bothered to watch it before they played it. :) I thought it was brilliant.

The nationalists know they cannot promise that we would keep the Pound. That is why, when pushed on the issue, they become so belligerent. This morning, under pressure on Sky’s Murnaghan Programme, Nicola Sturgeon again threatened to default on Scotland’s share of UK debt if the rest of the UK refused to create a currency union.

Just think what that means. Scotland would be a small country, presumably joining the Euro, which had just sent a message to international lenders that we could not be trusted to honour our debts. What would that mean for our interest rates and our mortgage costs?

There were also signs of disagreement in the Yes Scotland campaign, with Margo MacDonald, the independent MSP and former SNP deputy leader, saying she would vote Yes “knowing that not everything that had been expected by the government will necessarily come into being”.

She added: “Even if it (the UK Government) did agree, I would not expect the state that is going to be left by us to say, ‘Aye, anything you say’.?

Colin Fox, leader of the Scottish Socialist party, and a board member of Yes Scotland, added: “I think the idea of a sterling zone renders ridiculous the idea that you have an independent country”.

Meanwhile, Ronald MacDonald, Adam Smith professor of political economy at Glasgow University, described the plan as a “non-starter”, and said the alternative of using the pound without the agreement of the rest of the UK would produce higher interest rates and higher mortgage payments.

50 years of Doctor Who was bad enough - surely it's not as long as 22 years since Freddie Mercury died?

Freddie Mercury would certainly be on my Desert Island Discs!

Lots of bluster but nobody has yet said NO to currency union , they beat about the house knowing well if they get stuffed that they will need to have one to survive. When the chips are down they will be folding big time.

More like signs of panic in the dependence camp , Darling stuttering and twitching , and Foghorn Leghorn Carmichael talking complete mince, its downhill for dependents all the way.

We didn't manage to score one this month. We hope to revive the competition for December.

October's was of course a nicely taken penalty....

9 goals scored = the same as West Ham who have no striker and of course got 3 of those against us.

I know - that's what's the worst part about it! The hope just keeps lingering... Bale's last minute strikes last season kept that for us right until the end but still we magnificently failed.

Now going to spend all week thinking what if we beat Man U - which we might as I put a 3-figure amount on Man U at 7-4 as soon as we'd let the 6th in... hedged I suppose... nailed on draw now.

He had his best game for us on 7th Nov vs Sherriff - was Man of the Match- he absolutely HAD to start against Newcastle at home to build on this next game and ahead of the international break so he was 'on a roll'.....

but no AVB kept him on the bench all game even though we were chasing it for 75 mins ... then he gets thrown his first start for us 2 weeks on and at Man C of all places....

Don't even get me started how bringing on Adebayor at 1/2 time when he's not been picked even for the bench all season.

There's Danny Rose's bad toe, our only left back of course, who was supposed to be out a month in Sept and still 2 months on, no sign of him.

But still only 2 points off CL.. it's crazy.

It is reported that the Shetland subsample moved by 0.0003% over the month

Thanks to Fitalass & co., I know where Falkirk is. Where is Flowers ?
  • Spurs PL goal of the month competition for November has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

We didn't manage to score one this month. We hope to revive the competition for December.

October's was of course a nicely taken penalty....

    Look on the bright side.

You're only 2 points off a champs league place
I know - that's what's the worst part about it! The hope just keeps lingering... Bale's last minute strikes last season kept that for us right until the end but still we magnificently failed.

Now going to spend all week thinking what if we beat Man U - which we might as I put a 3-figure amount on Man U at 7-4 as soon as we'd let the 6th in... hedged I suppose... nailed on draw now.
Although I do have to ask, £30 million for Lamela, was AVB smoking the same stuff Damien Comoli was when we signed Andy Carroll for £35million.

But still only 2 points off CL.. it's crazy.
Luis Suarez, who missed the first five league games of the season, has scored 9 league goals this season, which is as many as the whole of Tottenham team this season, in the league.

Daniel Sturridge has also scored 9 league goals this season.

I'm as pleased to know that as the delight I feel each time Ozil gets rave reviews thanks to our Bale sale.

I admire the confidence of the No betters, but like Mike I too do not think a win for No is a certainty. Hell, I think Yes still has the best chance. Perhaps I should lay a bet on Yes simply to dull the patriotic hurt that will be done to me if yes wins.

I could be really cruel, and remind you, that you could have signed Suarez in January 2011, but 'Arry's scouts told him that Suarez wasn't very good.

    So, we signed him instead.

Tottenham tried to sign Luis Suárez but were told he was not up to it

I'm assuming the prices are going to be uninteresting, but has anybody spotted any Cowdenbeath by-election prices yet (perhaps at local bookies)?

Polling day is not that far off: 23 January.

    Result last time (2011):

    Lab 11,926
    SNP 10,679
    Con 1,792
    LD 997
    oth 276

What was the GE2010 result as a matter of interest ?

    Lab (Gordon Brown) 29,559
    SNP 6,550
    LD 4,269
    Con 4,258
    UKIP 760
    oth 406
Yup. It has got the ingredients of a close run in. SNP squeezed the Con, LD and UKIP vote in 2011. What else will come to their favour this time ?

Doubt very much it'll be close. Labour thumped the SNP in this area at the 2012 local elections. It would be stunning if Labour won by less than 4000 votes. Remember, we are mid-term and Labour are peaking.

Consequently, I cannot see any bookies offering interesting odds.

Agree totally. I love *early* Queen, but I love T Rex even more. I used to play Electric Warrior at max volume in my student flat. Knew every lyric off by heart.

I stupidly gave away my entire vinyl collection about 15 years ago. Be worth a few quid now.
  • Those southern Conservatives who expect an improving economy to keep them in government might like to read this from Saturday's Yorkshire Post:

" The release of detailed public spending breakdowns for 2012/13 put the issue back into the spotlight today, with the Government’s growing desire to show Scottish voters the benefits of remaining part of the UK only exacerbating the situation for hard-pressed Yorkshire.

Last year, the Treasury spent £246 per head on transport in Yorkshire, compared with £545 per head in London and £539 per head in Scotland.

It spent £110 per head on cultural services in Yorkshire, compared with £211 in London and £231 in Scotland. And it spent £134 per head on housing in Yorkshire, compared with £214 in London and £304 in Scotland. "

A problem this government has created for itself is that its seen as unfair. Not just in favouring the rich but in regional terms as well.

A government for 'cockneys and jockneys' so to speak. But its in the medium sized towns of middle England that the next election will be decided. And its these places which seem to be ignored by government - neither rich enough to be pandered to nor poor enough to be helped, not fashionable or famous enough for politicians to be interested in.

The Yorkshire Post it should be noted is widely read by swing voters in marginal constituencies in West Yorkshire.

Very true. It is in the English regions that the election will be decided. Yet Leics is like Yorks, neglected by our London centered media and politicians, of both parties. Not wise at all.

  • Sean Connery addresses the SNP faithful in October 2014:

"Comrades! This is your captain! It is an honour to speak to you today! And I'm honoured to be sailing with you on the maiden voyage of our Motherland's most recent achievement. And once more, we play our dangerous game. A game of chess... against our old adversary, the English Navy! For 300 years, your fathers before you and your older brothers played this game... and played it well. But today, the game is different. WE have the advantage! It reminds me of the heady days of Bannockburn and Robert the Bruce, when the world trembled at the sound of our war drums. Now they will tremble again - at the sound of our silence. The order is: engage the silent drive!

"Comrades! Our own fleet doesn't know our full potential! They will do everything possible to test us, but they will only test their own embarrassment. We will leave our fleet behind! We will pass through the English patrols, past their sonar nets, and lay off their largest city, and listen to their rock and roll... while we conduct missile drills! And when we are finished, the only sound they will hear is our laughter, while we sail to Dublin, where the sun is warm, and so is the... comradeship.

"A great day, comrades! We sail into history!"

    Ireland leading 22 - 7 after 49mins

Doubtless someone will claim its all your fault.

But lets be honest Ireland were ALWAYS going to lose their nerve.

Some teams like to be plucky losers and some teams like to be winners and we know which of them Ireland is.
  • Foxinsox - I'll let you off. Just so that everyone on here knows: the finest music ever made was recorded by black musicians in the US from the late 50s to the early 80s. No ifs; no buts; just definitive fact. Northern soul is part of it, but as you know, there's a whole lot more: from Motown through Stax to the sweet sound of Philadelphia; early house, go-go, rap; d-d-d-dicso; funk; and on and on and on.

Strong progress from @WilliamJHague and @JohnKerry on #Iran. Nowhere near the end - but a sign the pressure is working.

I'm betting that Iran will turn round and kick them all in the teeth for this favour.
Then the next Labour government can invade them.

    They do rather have form.
The last British Prime Minister to invade Iran (for world and British security) was Churchill.
sorry I should have been clearer, form for invading Middle Eastern countries (should I add on a lie).

But I do take your point.

Christmas is the time that some retailers must make enough money to see them through the rest of the year.

And, no, I don't like it either.

The only thing I like about Christmas shopping is the 'worst Christmas tree bauble' challenge between me and a group of mates. Garden centres are the best. I've won the last four years.
  • There was a Christmas aisle in September in my local Tesco.
I really, really hate Christmas, but this is a great song and video.
