The fact that such a conclusion perfectly coincides with what they want anyway - Brexit without any restrictions on what they could do in power - is I am sure a happy accident and will in no way influence their assessment of whether a referendum would help."

OK, but the scenario I'm spooling is a GE where the Cons are offering Hard Brexit under a Proper Leaver and public opinion has by then moved further against any Brexit.

In those circumstances I think offering Ref2, becoming in effect the party of Remain, would get Labour in.

I may be wrong, obviously, but that is not my main point.

My main point, the thing I am very sure about, is that Corbyn and McDonnell will base the decision on WHETHER to offer Ref2 purely on how they think it will play for them in that GE. Will it help us into power? They will place that above any ideology about EU membership.

Pushing 70, a lifetime of ostensibly pointless socialist activism behind them, one chance to practice what they preach, to give meaning to their professional lives.

They will do what it takes.
