For ex I didn't know where Mark Hoban was until now. John, confess, did you know it?!
Yes. He's ex Treasury (lots of poison for tim) and is has been doing some solid work behind the scenes. I'm a bit surprised he's being replaced so soon; fingers crossed for promotion not the sack. He's a Tory moderate so by definition is pleasing
If I was Ed I would look at giving Chris Leslie a more prominent role. He's usually good on tv, more experienced than Reeves, who needs to work on communication.

Mark Hoban is one of the more visible Ministers since he is on the telly every month when the unemployment figures come out. While he was ok, its probably a position that could afford to have a more aggressive person, especially as the election approaches.

"Capital Economics has revised up its growth forecasts for 2013 and 2014. Growth for this year is now expected to be 1.5pc, up from previous estimate of 1.2pc
Given that GDP in Q3 seems to have at least matched Q2’s 0.7% expansion, our previous forecast of growth in 2013 as a whole of 1.2% looks a little pessimistic.
Growth for next year is now expected to be 2.5pc, up from 2pc."

Is that the Romanian surge you fear is uncontrollable?
Not sure it's Romanian but it is definitely uncontrollable.
The Romanian and Bulgarian surge is a big factor in the Ukip percentage at GE2015, one that I don't think those that rely on on past data are taking fully into account
Laughing at Socialist Labour playing the obsessive class card.
It's Number Ten briefing about a "flat cap reshuffle" isn't it?
Whereas the Tories think they can sort out their problem by leaving Osborne and Hunt, the primary incompetent chums in the two key election portfolios.
You're the one busy bashing away at Little Timmy, whilst endlessly repeating 'flat cap' to yourself. Triple figure mention by tea time?
Completely OT. Still stuck offshore in the Atlantic. Day 32. Still foggy. We had some clear weather over the weekend but apparently the helicopter pilots all went home.
Given that Ed's probably gained a taste for hijacking the media narrative over the last few weeks with "courageous" moves like going after energy companies and the Mail, what are the chances of a more-significant-than-expected shadow cabinet reshuffle in order to dominate tomorrow's headlines and appear less "weak"? If he wants to get rid of Balls (unclear, and possibly nuclear) then that would be the obvious play. Judging by previous family pronouncements, if he promoted Yvette as a replacement, which would be a good move, then he could probably get away without provoking a civil war, moving Balls to education (where he's good at annoying Gove) or health (not obvious why, but I'll think of a reason shortly).,

Methinks you missed the point of the exchange there isam. Needless to say it was nowhere near as high brow as you might think.
Quiet moment reshuffle wise, so I need some pb help (don't we all?).
Since the last round of vanilla changes, I can now only access the new pb threads by emptying the Firefox cache. No longer will clicking the link do the trick? Another of my laptops has the same problem but the third works fine. How do I solve this minor irritation?
Thanks in advance and even tim gets an e-hug if he provides the answer!

The same has started happening for me. I just click on the top entry in the Archive sidebar and it takes me straight to the latest thread.
There's bound to be an elegant solution but now I've got a workaround I'm happy.

Balls was like a sailor on shore leave as education secretary in the run up to the last election. He was shamelessly pissing money all over the spot with the knowledge that he wouldnt have to pick up the bill. Something Gove will be pretty good at throwing back.

That line works well with Tory core vote (at least the ones who aren't voting for UKIP these days) but doesn't resonate so well elsewhere. As with health, so with education: it plays badly with many voters (particularly parents) to boast about how little you're spending. It's also not an attack that works so well coming from someone who's diverted a lot of money to increase school places in areas with excess space at the same time as there's a significant shortage in other areas.

Yes, the Tories really cut the amount of money going towards increasing school places...
"It therefore provided core capital funding to authorities totalling £400 million a year from 2007-08 to 2010-11, to help cover local growth in need for places....
Under its 2010 Spending Review settlement in October 2010, the Department doubled its specific core funding for new places to £800 million a year from 2011-12 to 2014-15"

Context: I was replying to the suggestion that Gove would attack Balls for overspending in education by suggesting that wasn't smart for him to do; that's irrelevant of actual spending. If Gove is spending more, that just makes it more tricky. My other point is that he's spending it in the wrong places... so increased spending as you cite above is all very nice, but the free school programme means that it's achieving less than it should.
So I don't really have a view on whether the Tories "really cut the amount of money going towards increasing school places" - but thanks for the link all the same, interesting reading.
Matthew Hancock, a former aide to George Osborne, has been appointed as minister of state for skills and enterprise, a promotion from his role as Parliamentary Undersecretary of State. Perhaps Mr Hancock might cut off the mullet hairstyle he was sporting at the Conservative party conference? Not bad for an MP who compared his political career to Winston Churchill, William Pitt and Benjamin Disraeli in the Spectator last September.

But as is said on Guido's post, the DV would be interesting.
Actually, that brings up a point: are all candidates DV'ed well before a reshuffle, or is it done once they are promoted? And aren't there certain implications in ministers having to be DV'ed?
Has Jeremy Browne left the Government in order to spend more time with his Tory voters? The man should just defect from the Orange book side to the blue side of the government benches and have done with it.

Jeremy Browne is a victim of Nick Clegg's desire to make it look like Lib Dems could jump into bed with Labour in 2015.
Just for clarity, Norman Baker concluded Kelly wasn't bumped off by MI5. But by an Iraqi hit squad. MI5 then covered it up.
