    The banality/stupidity of assorted media.

"Mr Burnham, how are you going to get Manchester through this?"

Yeah, Manchester would be in complete disarray without its major. The eyes of the city are on him.

    Deary me.

There was an unintentionally funny bit on the radio this morning when Burnham said something like 'and in exactly the same way as London, Manchester will it its unique way show solidarity'.

On topic, I've spent so many nights in the MEN Arena, in fact some of the happiest nights of my life have been in there.

My next gig there is Steps featuring the Vengaboys in December,

I'm going, nobody is going to stop me seeing them.

I think you might be the only heterosexual male in the place :-)
I've seen Steps several times before, I won't be the only heterosexual chap there.
Isn't the new acronym LGBTSE? :)
Hahahaha, that's made me laugh out loud.

(By the way, it's an initialism, not an acronym)

Actually I was meant to be seeing Kiss next Tuesday at the MEN Arena.

You certainly have a errhhhh shall we say an eclectic taste in music.
You've never lived until you've seen the Kiss Army in action.
I meant from KISS -> Steps....I can't imagine there is a massive audience cross over.
    You'd be pleasantly surprised.

The thread header mentions postal votes landing this week and I'm sure many will.

However, the date range for receipt of postal vote papers at this election seems to be wider than I can ever remember. Some councils sent them out a week or more ago. In my council, my polling card informs me that my postal vote will not be sent until Tuesday 30th May.

This must make national campaign timetabling something of a nightmare.

Dates were generally moved earlier when the franchise was extended to larger numbers of ex pats. Nevertheless it's up to your council. Most are (or were) going out today or tomorrow. Some went out last week. I doubt any would have been earlier than last week, at all. Some, including those for late applicants, may go out later. 30th May seems very late and my bet is that yours will be sent out well before then - some councils use a "last mailing" date for publicity, to deter people from phoning up to complain they haven't received it yet, as tends to happen.

Virtue signallers, the lot of them.

Between 2006 and 2014 I gave 26 pints of blood. I've stopped going because I became fed up with the jobsworths that run the sessions. I'm not in a position to book up in advance as I don't know if I'll be around on the day three months in advance. I don't mind waiting an hour to be done, but the people who run the sessions around where I live are so anal they just tell you to go away.

This is a bit different, though, as the use of explosives implies organisation and planning, almost certainly a wider conspiracy, and buying components or smuggling explosives. This is what MI5 ought to be able to keep an eye on. It's not just some lone nutter grabbing a knife out of the kitchen drawer on his way out.

Not sure that it invalidates the point made though, if anything it confirms it.

To run a solid surveillance operation on one person takes about 16 people, per shift. That is, assuming 8 hour shifts and a 24/7 operation, 64 trained operatives per target. Then some of those need to have the not only the proper training but also the right credentials to follow the target into any location he/she may go. Finding and training enough people to do that is very difficult, for 850 targets it is impossible.

On top of that you need the technical specialists (planting bugs etc.) which are also not in plentiful supply. Plus you need another whole tier of analysts to make sense of the information coming in and some decision makers to decide what to do about it. Oh, and agent runners to recruit and manage informants (no small task on its own).

I think you are being over optimistic in saying that MI5 ought to be able to keep an eye on every conspiracy. Their resources are finite and judgements have to be made as to who to work on and who not to.

    Impressive statesmanlike speech from May.

Why wasn't there better security? And she said nothing about improving security in the future.
And if she had you'd have accused her of 'rushing to judgement' without 'establishing all the facts'.......

How would you improve security in a public place?
What has improving security got to do with establishing all the facts? No two attacks are identical.

I've said here today how I would improve security. I think there needs to be more education of staff who have a security role (in particular, do not pooh-pooh any reports you receive - learn from fire brigade protocols) and of ordinary people (in particular, know about stampedes). I think some of this is a job for the army (staff training and also proper evacuation, which can save a lot of lives), and I would support an army presence at all big entertainment events and other public gatherings.

Saying "our values will prevail" is empty. There is a lack of proper leadership.

Also I did not like it one bit how she conflated her role as prime minister with her role as leader of the Tory party.

Went to bed around 3am with the death toll at 19, extremely sad but not surprised to wake up to hear the death toll had risen. We may see more in the coming days, there will be some truly horrific injuries considering the nature of the incident.

My sister is still working (GMP), her shift should have ended some hours ago and isn't back yet. I would imagine they will all be kept on at the moment.

Going back to May's speech, impressive. She does that type of speech well, so did Cameron.

Yeah, but that one was so clearly insidious you might have made an exception to the rule.
    Hi Peter

Not insidious, if aimed at me. The knowledge and intellect on here makes that claim a little flimsy. The point was that people on all levels really need to be careful how they respond in one circumstance in case that response is then justifiably thrown back at them at a later date. Ask Colin Parry. I don't know where you are based but I can assure you that in the North West it is a very subdued day and lots of people are very upset.

I might add I look forward to your posts, very insightful, most of the time :-)

Of course it was aimed at you.

You stated you had been a lurker for many years and yet you do not know where I am based. You can't have been lurking very often if you are unaware of my location, or my identity generally. I've been posting since March 2005 (the first 10,000 or so posts were under a very slightly different username, before Mike switched to Vanilla) so to regulars I should think I'm almost family.

Excuse me if I find your credentials a bit thin.

Crossed wires. I was talking about the one that is about half way down the Daily Mail page showing the immediate aftermath. Somebody posted that to twitter within minutes of the attack.

I have to say I am in two minds about if we need to see this stuff. Sky aren't showing it. On one hand do we need to see all these dead people, but on the other it really hits home how awful it all is.

No. Their literal stated objective is to divide Muslims bombing a pop concert helps they believe because they want Britons to turn on Muslims so they can say "see they hate you, now choose it's us or them". They want muslims to decide whose side they are on.

The idea isis want to change the west into an islamic state is wrong, they want to create a caliphate in Syria/Iraq to bring on end times.

It is about showing some respect for the victims and their families, before launching back into electoral point scoring. As the parties are all doing today. You are right that in a free country it is not obligatory. But it is desirable.

There is something slightly odd about complaining that the members of a political forum are discussing the political implications of what is almost certainly a political act. I can't for the life of me think why it is predominately supporters of one party that are disquieted about the discussion taking place.

If people on the TV talk about things I find disagreeable, I change to a difference channel, likewise rather than trying to fetter the free speech of others to suit your own taste it might be easier to follow the advise of Mr Meeks and others and seek entertainment elsewhere today.

No, destroying the western way of life is not the jihadists' stated objective. Daesh in their journal "Dabiq" (the title of which is an apocalyptic reference) say they want to negotiate with the US.

There are apocalyptic references on both sides!

The purpose of the jihadists' terror attacks in the west is to spur a withdrawal from the Middle East of "crusader", secular ("kufr") and Jewish armed forces which stand in the way of the health of the kind of barbaric state that they want to make thrive.

Also in 2013 I saw Girls Aloud live at the MEN Arena.

They were fab, nearly as awesome as Depeche Mode in 2009 and Duran Duran in 2011.

    :)

I never thought that I'd find another Girls Aloud fan on PB.

Girls Aloud's greatest hits was one of the 100 albums to love in the Sunday's Sunday Times. It's one of the few albums that appears on the car usb stick which I don't instantly skip...

You certainly won't be the only chap claiming to be heterosexual there.

    5, 6, 7, 8 times?
Heh, this will be the 5th time I'll see Steps live.
    Thats a tragedy.
On a day like this, a Steps concert would be just about the last thing on my mind.

In terms of ways the events of the past 24 hours could damage the Tories I suppose there is always the chance that the suspect involved was on some watchlist during May's time as home secretary and wasn't fully checked out.

Given the media are already saying the authorities are certain they know who he is, that would suggest that the individual is probably known to them. If they aren't known, even with an ID is found etc, they normally say need to check out to make sure that it is that person etc etc etc.

Yes, they will undoubtedly take some votes off the Tories. She is lucky they are only standing in 60% of the constituencies. At the same time one would imagine a small red to blue drift, but really this is very early speculation. I'm just glad the election was as much a foregone conclusion as possible as I'd feel uncomfortable with a major event like this changing the outcome.

    FPT:

In defence of politicisation of these issues - I take the view that when there is a mass shooting in the US, all the NRA people saying that 'today is not the time for politics' or accusing the democrats of making political capital out of the shootings is pretty disgusting in my mind, because it just stops discussing the problems at hand. I have a feeling many people are the same as me in this regard.

I think that is very sensible - I don't intend to get into any politicisation of this issue, I think to any extent that happens it will be slight in any case, but like you there are times when 'in the moment' is precisely the time to discuss things, where while the heatedness may not be helpful, it is too easy to ignore a problem whenever there is not an immediate crisis, and it is best to examine these things, including unpalatable aspects and confronting uncomfortable political implications for persons and groups, and trust in our society and our governance to keep a lid on any disproportionate reaction.

It's hardly going to be news since the ISC told everyone a couple of years ago that we would need to increase the size and budget of the security services by something like 50 fold to watch all the "persons of interest" on a 24/7 basis.

Is Juncker right when he says the terrorists are trying to destroy our way of life?

    Is that their stated objective?

If Isis is trying to establish a state in the Middle East which imposes Islamic law, which are they bombing Manchester?

They wish to cause division and strife between Muslims and non-muslims in Europe.

It is a key part of their philosophy that it is i.poasoble for Muslims to live peacefully in Europe amongst the 'Crusaders'. The fact that lots of Muslims do is pretty devastating to their ideology - this they want to cause a massive anti-Muslim backlash in Europe by perpetrating terrorism.

They want a black and white world and I eliminate shades of grey, it's all in their literature.

Could Boris Johnson perhaps put down his US passport for a moment and call in the US ambassador and ask him to tell Donald Trump to STFU? If this was a jihadist attack against Britain then it was a successful one and it is no help to condemn the enemy as "losers", even if it's Trump's favourite word for people he doesn't like.

I don't know where you're based. No offence intended but apart from the Scots (and then it's just Scotland in general) and a certain individual from Bedford I don't know where many people are from. You're definitely part of the family here though and not knowing your identity is implausible.
Thank you Philip. I am however moderately surprised that my East End roots are not more widely known, not least because of my occasional use of the local vernacular, my old china.

Still, I suppose it depends how your antennae are fixed. I must admit I couldn't locate most posters, either geographically or politically.
No-one speaks like that down Wanstead High Street nowadays...

Justin Bieber's continued success is tragic.

One of the few Canadian exports in recent years that I don't like.

    U like Molson?
    Who?

When it comes to Canada I was thinking about Drake, The Weeknd, Alessia Cara
Molson is a beer, not a band!

The Canadians make surprisingly good wine too...
    Ah, okay.

Never tasted Canadian wine or any kind of Canadian alcohol.

I'm very basic in my choices regarding alcohol.

    For instance I like Jagermeister.

You are such a loss to the world of diplomacy.

Including the Okanagan Valley....with their bizarre ice wine.
That's what I was thinking of. One of the best dessert wines I've had.

Very good with stilton, one of those combinations that sounds awful but is actually delicious.

Also in 2013 I saw Girls Aloud live at the MEN Arena.

They were fab, nearly as awesome as Depeche Mode in 2009 and Duran Duran in 2011.

    :)

I never thought that I'd find another Girls Aloud fan on PB.

I'd be surprised if there weren't quite a lot. PB's combined musical tastes are broad and unpredicable.

I think I've only been the the MEN once, to see My Chemical Romance, which was amusing as the signs on the A road leading into the city had 'MCR' painted on the road.
Was that the March 2007 gig? I was there!
Yes, it must have been: the most recent album at the time had been Black Parade.

    *feels old*.

Really enjoying PB Mash-Up Radio today....

Sometimes I think PB is the kookiest place on the internet.
Is that when we are talking about expensive plonk, world class restaurants or the best first class airport lounge?
Better still, where to find all three in the same place :p

I never thought in my entire life I would visit this site and witness a love-in between Girls Aloud fans. I don't think even Sean T with his maniacal frothing can top that.

    Don't mention trains

I have been there a few times and spent a few afternoons doing the tours....I had to have a long lie down afterwards!

Heard some truly horrific stuff from someone who was at the scene near the foyer area. That person is expecting the death toll to rise.
