He's now a radio presenter - and just won an award for it IIRC.
He'd be perfect MoL fodder post Boris - he's gay, Tory, well known via LBC, runs his own publishing house [Biteback] that specialises in political books, has diabetes, is in a civil partnership.
He also likes Cliff Richard. How many boxes does that tick?!
This is a comment on the YouGov site over the van posters
"Also why's this van not outside big businesses saying; "Do you pay your corporation tax? If not text this number and we'll help you pay or remove your business from this country!"
Labour party hq would be an appropriate spot too !
Why ?
Why not?
Because if there is no sensible reason they may as well park a van outside your home .

Unfortunately his performance in Norfolk North in 2005 shows he's not an electoral Titan, quite the opposite, which is a shame as I quite like him
I was recently contacted for the first time by Ipsos Mori, but as a woman of a certain age I was then very tactfully told that I was surplus to their requirements.
I wonder what the likelihood is of my being 'phoned by two different companies within a coupla weeks of each other. The 1st was Ipsos MORI and the 2nd was, err, different. Curiosity satisfied by the 1st, I sent the second one packing. If I am typical then that should be a factor in weighting---the "fed up effect". What really put me off was the sneaky questions, in passing as it were, about other factors in my life style---how many 'phones did I own etc.
"Despite multiple offers to, @nick_clegg won't say he'll veto the 'go home' posters going nationwide."
I expect Nick was too busy organising the photo op with his wife on the Thames - the one tim posted about endlessly.....
"Now let’s see... you’re running the country while the PM is away and keen to get some good publicity after taking a recent hammering. So why not ditch the official Jaguar and meet the people on the commute into work? Better not to join the hordes on the sweaty Tube, the river bus is much nicer on a lovely summer morning, even if it is more expensive. And, gosh, how lucky, a photographer just happens to be there to record your ‘impromptu’ trip as you swig coffee, chat to fellow commuters and exchange loving glances with your wife... "
EdM gave Maurice Glassman a peerage for Blue Labour and when he mentioned immigration being an issue - EdM ran a mile away and never mentioned him again.
David Cameron a new type of Conservative. He's ended up sponsoring Go Home vans...
It's John Cruddas I feel sorry for. Immigration was going to be Labour's killer new issue until Ed vacillated, wobbled and left Cruddas humiliated. Check out this historical curiosity:
'Regaining the blue collar vote is crucial for both parties. This must involve understanding the blue collar mindset and the desire for economic security. Cruddas argues that, “Labour's future in England is conservative. “ If he is successful at reinserting the conservative element of the Labour tradition, Tory strategists should be very nervous indeed.
He also understands concerns about immigration and welfare, once saying that immigration had been used as a “21st Century form of incomes policy.” We found that pledges to control welfare and cut immigration would be the two things that Labour could do to attract potential Labour voters.'
Also I guess that they're too busy working, labouring for builders, at car washes, takeaways etc to be getting into fights in pubs or causing anti social behaviour.
EdM gave Maurice Glassman a peerage for Blue Labour and when he mentioned immigration being an issue - EdM ran a mile away and never mentioned him again.
It was amusing to watch the 'strategy' in the early part of Miliband's tenure. Cruddas and his people would brief a sympathetic journalist (usually Mary Riddell) about Ed's looming speech on Europe/welfare/immigration that would 'reconnect' Labour with its roots and prelude a new paradigm in Leftist positioning. It never happened of course. Ed could never bring himself to face the displeasure of Polly Toynbee and her like. Still, there were even some on here who were taken in.
Are you also suggesting that every crime prevention poster put out by the Home Office or your local police station over the last few decades is driven by a Government who wants to waste taxpayers money making a party points?
No, I'm suggesting this one was a waste of taxpayers' money and aimed at nakedly party political ends. I really cant put it more simply than that.
So you think Labour & Lib Dem policy is for illegals to stay?
I'm sorry but I fail to see why I should find this poster offensive or "racist".
It's amazing that anyone could find it racist. Where does it mention race??
If the van went through London, where most people aren't white british, would the charges of racism be thrown at the Asian community for wanting illegal Eatern Europeans arrested?
Also I guess that they're too busy working, labouring for builders, at car washes, takeaways etc to be getting into fights in pubs or causing anti social behaviour.
@jdportes: Either there aren't that many illegal migrants in London, or they're strangely law-abiding... http://t.co/kJbrCMurt8
Illegal immigration has reduced the crime rate in London? I've heard more illogical theories
If illegal immigration reduces crime, immigration into London has raised educational standards, immigrants are twice as likely to start businesses and half as likely to claim benefits, then wouldn't it be logical to as all those British people who are opposed to these immigrants to go and live in another country and bring in some more immigrants?
We could send a van around saying "Go to Spain" Text Xenophobe to 0800 909 213.
Actually there's one flaw in that, spelling xenophobe
Yes that's it! Make countries better to live in, according to statistics, by getting rid of the people who live there and replacing them! That'll work...

No, in the card game of political correctness, Asian trumps Eastern European unless you're holding a Slav Muslim Gypsy undercard.

@tim - "illegal immigration reduces crime" is not a logically valid conclusion from the evidence. Even if illegal immigrants had a lower crime rate than the general population, they'd still commit more crimes than having no illegal migrants at all.
In addition, what imperative do you think this justifies? After all, "illegal" does typically mean deportation - other than amnesty.
Also I guess that they're too busy working, labouring for builders, at car washes, takeaways etc to be getting into fights in pubs or causing anti social behaviour.

Are you just dreaming up random questions now?
All parties support a de facto amnesty don't they? They just haven't the balls to admit it
Your party can give a amnesty in 2015 if they get in,how many years will it take before we need another one after the soft touch word gets round the world,1,2, 5 years tim,how many ?

Hugely late to the game, but how valid is the comparison, given that Thatcher was a woman, and attitudes to the fairer sex were a bit different back then.

I wonder how much a certain part of labour voters know how much the new labour types of the labour party thinks of them.
Peter Capaldi, the Scottish actor best known for playing the sweary Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It, is the new bookies’ favourite to be the next Doctor Who. William Hill had not taken any money on him before Sunday but had to cut the odds to 2-1 yesterday after 40 bets were placed in 24 hours, an avalanche in such a small market.

Yes, it's a major differennce from ICM/Populus, which has tended to lead to higher UKIP levels than other pollsters. If the figures are e.g. Tory 29 and 6 Tory before and now don't know Lab 33 and 6 Lab before and now don't know LibDems 8 and 6 before etc. UKIP 8 before and 4 DK
and (to make it simple) if half the don't knows lean UKIP and the rest won't say, then as I understand it ICM's result will be 32/36/11/10, but ComRes will on the SAME data report 29/33/8/19. In reality the differences are smaller because some DKs do lean towards their former parties, but it shows how important the assumptions are.
Probably not very much. We had Gordon and his bigoted woman quote, Chukka and his trash comment. The upper middle class poncing Islington Fabian types have always held the working class in contempt.

My oddest immigration-related moment was seeing on television a group of black women of West Indian heritage in Glasgow (of all places) bemoaning immigrants "coming here, taking our jobs" (etc.) It was rather surreal, especially with the thick (mixed) accents they had.

IIRC they gained the nickname of Comedy Res because of their loaded questions...
It was only a few days later, that we found that the poll was unweighted, unlike their normal practise.
This is an phone poll coming up
And we like phone polls.

Except Roger the posters don't say immigrants go home but 'those here illegally....'
I thought I better keep it simple in case the immigrants didn't understand English
Tories 30
Lab 36
Yellow Peril 10
Ukip 14
