If you are a monarchist then you should accept the heir to the throne being kept in the picture. The genetic lottery and line to the throne is intrinsic to monarchy.

One thing we should copy from Europe is retirement of the monarch, or we are going to always have a gerontocracy.

Many thanks to Speedy for his succinct notes - conveys the flavo(u)r as well as the content and they're enjoyable to read. Sounds as though we're heading for a clear Trump/Cruz lead.

Good work by @Speedy overnight in relation to the debate. Personally I went to bed.

On the reports this was a very bad, possibly fatal debate for Rubio. He needs to break through into the top 2 in some of the early states or he is going to die and that looks increasingly unlikely. I think Hillary will be delighted. Trump or Cruz will be a lot easier to campaign against and will make her look moderate and reasonable in a way Rubio would not have done.

Rather more alarmingly if she gets indicted over this email server business, we could have Pres Trump or Pres Cruz. For complete fiasco, if Cam screws the pooch on the EURef as badly as he could on current showing, we might get PM Corbyn as well
That would be a bit scary. But I think she has survived some fairly monumental stupidity with the private server and that the story has run its course.

Have the Democrats even had a debate so far? If they have it passed me by. Their contest is looking like a Brown like coronation. That went well.
In the event of a Hillary crash ..... another run for Kerry? Especially if he sorts something out with Putin over Syria?
The lack of obvious alternatives in the Democratic party should be concerning them. Kerry has worked hard as Secretary of State but with rather mixed results, not least because of the complete lack of interest in foreign affairs in the Whitehouse itself.

Given how he was so brutally destroyed the last time I really don't see him as an option but the alternatives are not thick on the ground.
You can get 100/1 for Kerry with some bookies at the moment.

Another Corbyn surge, Labour in 4th place, and vote down. Must be failing of local candidate.

    Shepperton Town (Spelthorne) result:
    CON: 62.0% (+6.1)
    UKIP: 13.0% (-5.4)
    LDEM: 11.1% (-0.8)
    LAB: 8.9% (-4.8)
    GRN: 4.9% (+4.9)

Harry's extremely brave prediction of a Tory win in Shepperton completely vindicated.

Surely that puts Cruz as the candidate?

According to Wikipedia there is a Dem debate on 19th Dec and there have been 4 so far, although one was online only. The debates are happening. Media not interested seems to be the summary.

According to the new Kavanagh and Cowley book, Obama sent Jim Messina to the Conservatives with the aim of stopping Miliband's Labour.

Why doesn't President Obama just go and JOIN THE TORIES

The reason I'm a monarchist is because our head of state is apolitical, Charles should not interfere or be seen to be interfering.

He reminds me of the Prince Regent in Blackadder III.

Not always. I'd be surprised if William isn't on the throne by the time he's in his mid-50s.

    OK, Final verdict.

Trump was doing like usual, he started bad but improved a lot as he went along, he just needs a target to attack.
Cruz was the best but he got damaged by his war with Rubio, they like nuked each other.
Rubio was destroyed, ganged up by everyone and failed to defend himself on a variety of issues, from foreign policy all the way to immigration.

Paul did ok, but had a bad closing statement, he was very good and attacked successfully most candidates, but talking about debt during a terrorism debate was stupid in his closing statement.

Bush tried to go after Trump, but it backfired.

Christie is too dangerous and unstable to be allowed in the white house, he came off like Trump but with all the negatives and no positives, and talked a lot about him being federal prosecutor.

Carson was trying to convince people that he knew about foreign policy with geography.

Fiorina and Kasich where invisible, Kasich was doing his karate chops and the ohio stuff, and Fiorina was in CEO mode.

    In conclusion:

    Cruz 7/10
    Trump 6/10
    Paul 5/10
    Bush 3/10
    Christie 2/10
    Fiorinna 1/10
    Kasich 1/10
    Rubio 0/10.

    Goodnight or good morning.

Rubio seems to be digging his own grave with immigration.

Thanks for all the analysis, Speedy.

Having a quick look at other summaries opinion seems a bit split, CNN more positive for Jeb than Fox.
As this is the republican race, I'll go with Fox.

How is he interfering with politics? Like the recent release of the black spider memos, there seems nothing in this latest news that shows him in a bad way. You could sense the Guardian's disappointment in the Live Blog as the spider letters were released.

This has apparently been going on for at least twenty years, and there have been no accusations of leaks from Prince Charles's household about the information given. As such, he seems more trustworthy than some of the politicians who get the same access!

This isn't a reference to the Cabinet papers story is it? Because I'd have been stunned if he didn't receive them, in fact he should. Of course, if one is not a monarchist then of course him receiving them would be a problem, just as the Queen receiving them would be, but merely receiving them isn't evidence of interference.
