Some have a theory that Ukip are now a meaningful rival to Labour in the North of England, and indeed it's hard to make sense of the meme that Labour is existentially threatened without believing that Ukip would have to do even more damage to Labour than in 2015. Are you worried about Ukip in the North of England (and elsewhere)? Do their voters look like they'll stick with Ukip?
Have you watched tonight's news?
It's a string of stories about Northern Muslims going to fight for the Islamic State.
As Labour's face becomes increasingly similar to those people, what do you think the consequence will be?
And it will be Labour's self inflicted wound. They have spent too long playing the politics of identity.
So long as they don't come back, one would have thought ISIS could be a wonderful way of separating out those who want to be here, and who are willing to conform to Western ideals, and those who would rather live in the caliphate.
It seems bizarre that we try and prevent people who don't want to live here.. from leaving...
If all those who did not want to be here left and got killed, I'd be inclined to agree with you - setting aside the moral question of exporting our violent killers to kill people overseas.
Unfortunately, too many of them come back and ISIS is almost certainly trying to export its violence to us.
Incidentally I get v irritated about the reporting of the 17-year old teenager case: it was all about the emotion, how his family felt and very short on facts. How long had the teenager been gone? Had he been reported as missing? How did he get to Syria? Where did the money come from? Etc etc. I know that teenagers have a certain amount of independence but for parents and family to be so utterly clueless about what their children are up to does not quite ring true. It does at the very least suggest a certain detachment. Were I a Muslim mother with teenage boys, I'd be watching them like a hawk these days.
It did turn out after all that the father of one of the girls from East London who joined IS and was photographed theatrically clutching here teddy bear was rather economical with the truth about his own possible responsibility for his daughter's actions.
Picking up on Carlotta's question it would be very informative to have an accurate picture of what Labour's private polling was showing because we have had 2 very different versions of the story to date.
According to Dan Hodges Ed spent the evening writing his victory speech and was encouraged to do so even after the exit poll came out on the basis it was wrong (as indeed it was but not in a good way for Labour). According to some of those involved in the polling Ed at least would have known that he was 6% behind on the night and should have been aware that victory was simply not possible.
Both these versions simply cannot be right.
We also know that the Tory internal polling was much more accurate if not spot on. If Labour's was well out it would be interesting to know why it was thought that they got it wrong and the Tories got it right: do they buy in to the Messina analysis that the pollsters' modelling of the population was simply wrong and based on what the population looked like in 2010.
For the conservatives it was canvassing results. They showed very accurately what was happening. But there was disbelief because of the belief in the overall accuracy of the main polls. Labour's canvassing results would have showed more or less to them what the Conservatives showed to their party. But again, there would have been disbelief at the mismatch.
The canvassing results *must* have shown for Labour that they werent doing materially better than they were in 2010. That the wild leads shown by the ashcroft polls in the marginals were pure poppycock.
I'll repeat what i have said before. An experienced campaign manager/co ordinator can look at a set of canvassing results, compare them with previous results and give an extremely accurate assessment of what is going to happen. Trend is key. I can only guess that the constituency canvassing results would have been locked down to prevent anyone other than a handful of people at the top of the party being able to look at what was happening.
What throws me is Nick Palmer. He has done this so many times now, but he got his predictions staggeringly wrong. The only reason why i think was that as the candidate, it can be tempted to comfort respond to voters who arent really planning on voting for you.
But surely these marginal MPs on majorities of a few hundred, canvassing their constituencies like men possessed would see it was close and share this info with their colleagues.
You mean you found the Anna Soubry's just given up posts convincing?
Oh dear just seen my MP is Chair of the Blair Witch Project and Commander in Chief of the New Labour Taliban.
Enough to ruin your holiday.
Sticks and stones. Who coined this Taliban thing? Properly offensive.
Which is not to say the witch thing is any better.
You dont think Kendall is a Witch?
I would be happy to carry out a dunking to be sure as I could be wrong
We get that you won't vote for her. Why call her a Witch, though.
Women being called Witches by men who disliked or feared them has some historical resonances and it seems a bit like all those other boo-words that are used by men about women, in power or seeking power, for instance, to put them down.
If Tim Hunt can be criticised for his crass attempt at a joke, then Labour supporters can also be criticised for attacking a woman MP who is seeking the leadership. It's not as if the Labour party - for all its priggish pontificating about women's issues - has a good record on this.
It is possible to disagree - even quite strongly - with someone's views without calling them derogatory and offensive names.
We also know that the Tory internal polling was much more accurate if not spot on.
No we don't. We can reasonably surmise from David Cameron's last-week campaign stops that the Conservatives knew about the miserable state of the Lib Dems, but we have zero evidence as to what they knew about Tory-Labour marginals.
On another note:
Isn't it funny that the polls currently being released are all in line with the result, while the ones before weren't? I mean, that ICM could be a 41-point score for the Tories if it's as wrong as the elections polls. Not funny from a Bayesian perspective of course, but I don't think that this perspective is relevant, and if it is it's a very bad thing about polling in the long-range after elections.
Except, the last stop on Cameron's tour was in Carlisle, a Conservative gain from Labour in 2010 by 853 votes on a 6% swing. This seat was not even classed as one of the seats the conservatives could possibly hold onto. In all the pre election analysis it was assumed this seat was lost. The line for the conservatives to be fighting on was much further up the list of marginals.
Already lost. Yet the Conservatives had decided to make this the last point of Cameron's rally the eve of the election. This decision was made more than seven days previous.
They knew this seat was in play, and they could only know that with good intelligence. The seat went from an 853 majority to a 2,774 majority.

Kendall, is deemed, by the MP's of the party you support, to be worthy of contention for the post of leader. Just how crap does that make the rest of them, in your opinion?

I don't think the news story will have any consequences for Ukip in 2020 at all.
I don't think it says anything in particular about whether the remaining Labour WWC voters will go Ukip next time, or vice versa.
Incidentally, I think this kind of rhetoric is unnecessary and divisive. Most people with Muslim faces have nothing like jihad in their hearts.
That maybe the case, but that is not what a lot of white working class voters in the North see. What they see is a constant string of stories about Muslims born and raised in Britain going off to fight for a death cult; young women being taken abroad to have their genitals mutilated; gangs of Muslims in nearby towns raping vulnerable children, immigrants jumping on lorries from France in broad daylight, ever higher immigration numbers, and a Labour Party whose main response to these things is to complain about "scapegoating migrants", criticise Islamophobia and call for multiculturalism.
You and I know very well that most Muslims are decent and upstanding members of society. But most members of the public do not make an effort to go out of their way to be objective and evidence-based when forming an opinion. They are too busy with their lives and they form their views on an instinctive basis to bits of news they happen to catch. In order to listen to the message about most Muslims being decent, much of the working class needs to hear you will come down like an anvil on the abuses that anger them so they trust you on such issues. They need to hear Labour promise to get immigration down and to integrate migrants to British culture in order to listen to them on these matters. Until Labour do that in a believable manner, they will continue to lose the white working class (and, perhaps soon, the Hindu and Sikh working class too).

It is possible to disagree - even quite strongly - with someone's views without calling them derogatory and offensive names.
Certainly but where's the fun in that?
I think the Blair Witch appellation is quite witty personally. And a party that thinks Corbyn should be on the short list and Kendall should be despised is really not something that any of us need to treat seriously.
Some have a theory that Ukip are now a meaningful rival to Labour in the North of England, and indeed it's hard to make sense of the meme that Labour is existentially threatened without believing that Ukip would have to do even more damage to Labour than in 2015. The first sentence is said when people don't like hearing something. "It's divisive" is just rhetoric meaning that people have different views. "Unnecessary" just means: "I'd rather not hear that."
As for the second, I'm not sure what a Muslim face is - and while it may be true - it only takes a few people to alter or harm the perception of the many. The possible difficulty for Labour is if it is seen as the party of Muslim immigrants, if that community is associated with violence here or abroad and if Labour is perceived as somehow turning a blind eye to that and/or being perceived as favouring that community in some way.
There are a lot of "ifs" in that and none of this is given. But there have been some straws in the wind which are not helpful to Labour. Labour would be wise not to be seen as equivocal on these issues. It's unfortunate that one of the contenders for the Labour leadership is not too discriminating about whom he shares a platform with and for whom he expresses support.

I am sure that makes you a better person.
In fairness it may well be that Nick was just a victim of wishful thinking. It is not exactly an uncommon characteristic in candidates.
A friend of mine stood for the Tories in Edinburgh. His agent was out canvassing with him and said he really enjoyed being out with him. Asked why, he explained my friend was completely realistic and knew he had no chance whatsoever. Many of the other candidates genuinely believed they had a chance.

My MP is thankfully on #TeamBurnham
Supporting scum then.
Have you got some contractual arrangement that involves you calling Burnham 'scum' at least once every thread?
It sounds increasingly...deranged.
Considering many Liverpudlians insist on calling the Sun 'the Scum' (including on here), over Hillsborough, despite that newspaper's apologies, I cannot see why I should call someone who seems to call for public inquiries at the drop of a hat - except if it is the NHS - by that term.
Only scum would put the sanctity of the NHS over patients.
I'm surprised you'd disagree.
Edit: no contracts (ZHC or otherwise) involved in my posts. I'm strictly a poorly-paid freelance.

I should perhaps say at this point that Mrs J refers to herself as a 'witch', with a preface applicable to her industry. I can't say what, as it would lead people directly to her.
The fact she loves cats and has curly black hair is also a give-away. Although she hates brooms.

You may. Others don't. I've seen that phrase or something like it used by people who would rather not hear what the writer is saying. On this topic it's worth remembering that facts don't go away just because we don't talk about them.
It seems to me that the divisions between some Muslims and others has got worse. That is something which it is in all our interests to cure and we can't do that if we don't talk about what is happening and why and frankly.
Your point about Labour's vote is a good one. But being perceived as the party for Muslim immigrants - if this is the case - does not obviate it getting votes elsewhere. Labour seems to get votes from all sorts of groups but sometimes seem oblivious to the fact that some of these groups have incompatible interests and may repel others whose votes it wants - which may explain the incoherence of some of its policies.

Kendall, is deemed, by the MP's of the party you support, to be worthy of contention for the post of leader. Just how crap does that make the rest of them, in your opinion?

It is possible to disagree - even quite strongly - with someone's views without calling them derogatory and offensive names.
Certainly but where's the fun in that?
I think the Blair Witch appellation is quite witty personally. And a party that thinks Corbyn should be on the short list and Kendall should be despised is really not something that any of us need to treat seriously.
Maybe. I don't want to get all Harriet Harman-ish about this. The best response to childish name calling is usually to ignore or come up with a withering retort, which shuts people up.
Ms Kendall can fight her own battles. It does not say anything particularly nice about the people doing it, though I have met and had a very nice chat with BJO.
But men are quite good at bullying women in this way - and it needs to be called out for what it is. For all the talk about personal attacks on politicians, it is still usually women who bear the brunt - and it's a bit pathetic, frankly.

I should perhaps say at this point that Mrs J refers to herself as a 'witch', with a preface applicable to her industry. I can't say what, as it would lead people directly to her.
The fact she loves cats and has curly black hair is also a give-away. Although she hates brooms.
So does Granny Weatherwax. Doesn't prove anything.

I think you are taking comments on an anonymous blog a little too seriously but I don't disagree with the general sentiment. I have also met BJO and very much enjoyed his company.
That is because - given my role - anyone bullying me would live to regret it.
I have in any case embraced my Inner Witch. Everyone sensible knows that Witches were, in fact, Wise Women. And we need many more of them. To clear up - again - the mess the Boys have made. Of everything. (Sigh!)
I know - I am taking this a tad seriously. It's just come after the Tim Hunt affair, that's all. And not all women are as tough as me.
Still, I was once called at work "The Angel of Death". When I raised an eyebrow at this, the poor - now ex-employee - told me that he meant it "in the nicest possible way."

She may not be beautiful but Granny Weatherwax is one of the great female characters in fiction. Her use of "headology" rather than magic to get her way is simply magic and extremely funny.

41 New Lab MPs is 41 too many IMO.
Looking at that table, only 13 out of those 41 did not support David Miliband in 2010. Kendall's support is ideologically very narrow among MP's and that's logical as she is the most right wing candidate.

Foodfight on the horizon between Greece and the EU over treaty violations, I don't know which side will Cameron take but it won't help the IN campaign, though Labour would be mostly affected if it encourages left wing euroskepticism.

Yes - it was $79 a year, now $99. It was a marketing masterstroke - anything delivered free in 2 days. Yes, you do tend to order more, which is the point.
But it's much more than that - you can borrow kindle ebooks, they have offers for Prime folks only, and Prime has a huge video library you can watch for free on your Fire TV gadget, among other things.

With Amazon??? I once ordered an end table, they sent the wrong shade, returned and the right one shipped, and a credit on my account. Cost to me - 0.
They didn't even wait to receive the first one before shipping the right one.

Not sure that's true..else why the dead cat on the table?
Except I don't think there ever was a dead cat. I know journalists loved the idea and printed it endlessly, but was there seriously going to be a Tory campaign during which they never mentioned Ed knifing his brother?
I believe the media grid was scheduled days, weeks or months in advance. The idea that they just decided late one night to send out Michael Fallon doesn't seem to me to be credible, however I bow to all the others commentators who called the election result with such great accuracy...

This chart is a tremendous resource. The lack of newbies for Kendall is telling, imo.
The question is whether it's telling about the intake or telling about Kendall? I would have thought there's a natural tendency for the newer intact to prefer a leader who they've seen on TV before they were elected. Kendall did pick up a switcher from Burnham last time, which Cooper didn't.

I'm shocked, someone elected as a UKIP MEP last year, has now formed a European Parliament Alliance with the National Front and other far right extremists.

Unlike the Conservative and Lib Dem scores that 16% is pretty evenly spread too. Ayr, Stirling, East Renfrewshire and some others should switch to SNP with CON 2nd next time tbh.
I'd be interested in knowing whether there was any truth to that rumour that the early postal votes showed disaster looming. I asked at the time and was told no, but wasn't entirely convinced I was being told the truth.
As for my impressions at the time, obviously they were wrong. The "Tories seem to have given up on Broxtowe" comment was based on three apparent straws in the wind - a friend close to the Tories in Loughborough was told that they were confident partly because they'd been reinforced with people who had been intended for Broxtowe, as that was now seen as beyond reach; a Swiss journalist interviewed AS (for publication after the election), who said philosophically that everyone expected her to lose, but who could tell, really; and there was a real gap in Tory leaflet delivery. I don't think I ever said AS had given up (not in her nature), but the Tory effort seemed to be faltering.
Against that, our canvass data was puzzlingly poor compared with the national polls - in fact it looked marginally worse than 2010 (though I'm quite certain there was a sharp further move in the last couple of days). I had an interest in encouraging any Tory move away, so I didn't volunteer that information (I've never claimed to tell the *whole* truth here), but in any case the national polls were so consistent that I just discounted them. I should have known better, and I apologise to anyone misled in their punting.

Presumably that's because no-one is actually supposed to know that.
By the way, i'm killing time at Heathrow - China flight two hours late - and have discovered Terminal 2's excellent "Gorgeous Kitchen" - only the second really good airport restaurant I've ever encountered (the other was in Vienna, where the Hotel Sacher have a branch restraurant in the UK waiting area!).
Can Greece just leave the Euro quickly and quietly !

It would have been useful to know Labour were faltering in Broxtowe because from that information it would have been possible to deduce that the party wasn't going to win Amber Valley, Erewash, Sherwood, etc.
I'd be interested in knowing whether there was any truth to that rumour that the early postal votes showed disaster looming. I asked at the time and was told no, but wasn't entirely convinced I was being told the truth.
Presumably that's because no-one is actually supposed to know that.
The postal guff also stated that Labour was "holding up" quite well in Scotland...

Was this the correct amount of influence for polling to have?
Already lost. Yet the Conservatives had decided to make this the last point of Cameron's rally the eve of the election. This decision was made more than seven days previous.
They knew this seat was in play, and they could only know that with good intelligence. The seat went from an 853 majority to a 2,774 majority.
It sounds increasingly...deranged.
I think the Blair Witch appellation is quite witty personally. And a party that thinks Corbyn should be on the short list and Kendall should be despised is really not something that any of us need to treat seriously.
Only scum would put the sanctity of the NHS over patients.
I'm surprised you'd disagree.
Edit: no contracts (ZHC or otherwise) involved in my posts. I'm strictly a poorly-paid freelance.
Also; how many return? And at leat at this point, we know who's likely to pose a threat. It's intelligence on the cheap.

Call a Woman a Witch or a Bimbo or a Great She-Elephant: anything other than engage with her brain and what she says, eh?!
Are you supporting Burnham's position on the public inquiry into it?
EDIT: If Labour is the "party of Muslim immigrants" it is on 2 per cent. It's not. Actually, it would be hard to believe sometimes here that Labour's vote went up compared to 2010.
Who knows how many return? Who knows how many are amongst those migrants washed up on Italy's shores? IS control towns on the Mediterranean, 400 miles from Italy.
As Gerry Adams once said: They have to be lucky once. We have to be lucky all the time.
Next time the 17-year old that no-one knew had anything in his heart may head for the local shopping centre to blow himself up.

The fact she loves cats and has curly black hair is also a give-away. Although she hates brooms.
I think you are taking comments on an anonymous blog a little too seriously but I don't disagree with the general sentiment. I have also met BJO and very much enjoyed his company.

2 day free delivery. Can't beat that with a stick. Costco have same day delivery - like most furniture retailers - but charge for delivery.
I can't fault that on a Sunday evening. I can only hope the response proves accurate when it comes to the fitting.
Kendall's support is ideologically very narrow among MP's and that's logical as she is the most right wing candidate.

"Syriza sources have told the Telegraph that Greece may seek an injunction from the European Court of Justice to stop the creditors and the EU institutions acting in a way that breaches Greek treaty rights. This would be an unprecedented move, greatly complicating the picture."
But it's much more than that - you can borrow kindle ebooks, they have offers for Prime folks only, and Prime has a huge video library you can watch for free on your Fire TV gadget, among other things.
For me money well spent.
They didn't even wait to receive the first one before shipping the right one.
I believe the media grid was scheduled days, weeks or months in advance. The idea that they just decided late one night to send out Michael Fallon doesn't seem to me to be credible, however I bow to all the others commentators who called the election result with such great accuracy...
My question to James Morris is:
Did he have the feeling something was going wrong during the campaign and if so when ?
And with that goodnight.
Q: - What was the nick name for Ed Miliband when he was out of the office?
“Whether or not the consumer has a duty to return the rejected goods, the trader must bear any reasonable costs of returning them, other than any costs incurred by the consumer in returning the goods in person to the place where the consumer took physical possession of them.”
Pretty exciting huh?
Harman, Benn, Mandy, Yvette, Ed B, Mad Al and on and on they robotically churn the line = how Tom Bradby didn't scream or at least just challenge one of them on the auto-repeat I don't know.
Labour couldn't run a bath right now.

The necessary proofs of usability for construction products or proofs of suitability for designs that are used to construct ventilation systems are based on the regulations set out in Section 17 ff. of the Specimen Construction Order in conjunction with the Building Regulation Lists, as amended. The Building Regulation Lists specify the equivalence of European classifications with national requirements pertaining to fire resistance.
