  • I wonder how many MPs have been elected on the back of votes of racists.

    Some obvious ones:

    1964 Conservative
Smethwick, Birmingham Perry Barr and Slough

    1970 Conservative
Clapham and without looking up the results Birmingham Yardley and Cannock

You can probably add any Conservative MP elected with a majority of under 100 in every election from 1964 onwards and probably many elected with majorities way above that.

Possibly Cheltenham in 1992 but the swing there was similar to that in Bath and the majority was quite comfortable.

Possibly Oldham East in 2010 but it would be impossible to say as I expect there was racist voting for all three main parties.

O/T You know how finicky the US neworks are - the wardrobe malfunction at the Superbowl some years back for example.

Today South Carolina played at Clemson. During the game a key Clemson player was ejected for targetting (driving his helmet oto another player's helmet, aka spearing). Replay after replay showed the call was highly questionable, but it was upheld on review.

For the next 2 or 3 minutes it was glorious to hear 88 thousand people shouting in unison - "Bullshit! Bullshit!." It almost drowned out the commentary.

That does sound good (though exceedingly off-topic!).

88,000 people is very impressive. Why is College Football so popular? Are College baseball, hockey etc. similarly popular?
Actually not that impressive. Most FBS college football stadiums are bigger than that - several over 100,000 people.

There are somewhere in the region of 28 NCAA college sports. Everything from Women's lacrosse thru golf, basketball, baseball and many others. Pretty much all of them lose serious money. Some basketball schools - Duke, North Carolina, Gonzaga etc - make money on their programs, but FBS college football programs bring in billions. and fund the rest. Think of the beheoth that is the NFL, and you have some idea of the size of college football.

Other than college football - and some basketball schools - college sports are pretty much ignored on TV, which is where the money comes from.

You're the kind of person who flings allegations of racism at anyone they disagree with.
But strangely enough, he's also the kind of person who comes out with corkers like this:

'@BenM are second generation immigrants, ie those born in the UK whose parents were born abroad, considered to be natives? Or are they immigrants? Or are they a bit of both?'

    Awkward.
My question then was very specific, with a good reason behind it.

BenM was incessantly referring to the report that said immigrants were a financial benefit to the uk. I wanted him to disagree with my question. He wisely didn't. You've foolishly brought it up.

The report he quoted counted kids of immigrants as immigrants themselves until their sixteenth birthday.

I never said that they should be considered as natives or immigrants.
Whether or not it was another scintillating attempt at a rhetorical bear trap, it was thuddingly insensitive at BEST. Perhaps race is just a subject you should steer clear of for a while?

Can I just say the film Paddington is possibly the greatest British film of all time.

    Better than Kes?
    Yes.

It is the heart warming story of a Brown coloured illegal immigrant in this country who keeps his head covered and changes the life of an English family.

    All ages loved it.

  • Sacré bleu, new phone and it seems to be spellchecking in French!
  • Based on Shadsy's Blog The Political Bookie, Ladbrokes' recent odds on UKIP's most likely wins suggest they are on course to capture around 5-8 seats next May, give or take a couple...

There seem to be two types of betting markets. Those that are better guides to the outcome than professional political pundits and those that have been skewed by wishful thinking by partisan supporters so that easy money can be made by the unbiased punter.

Under which heading do the UKIP seat markets fall? Are they skewed by naively optimistic Kippers, or do they provide better guidance than the political columnists who have little idea about the exten of UKIPs likely gains?

I think we can say Forgetful Ed's Conference speech had an obvious effect. Perhaps more to his personal numbers, but they are linked in to Labour's.

It is perhaps too soon to say whether the Griffin endorsement of UKIP will have an obvious effect. But I imagine Reckless and Carswell are feeling a little queasy tonight about their newest bezzy mate. I laugh at all those answering by not answering my question. I know that you all know the answer but are ashamed by it because of your common association with it.

I don't believe that any of you are racist, hence your shame, but you will share a political base with the racists as long as you stick with the party you currently support.

So are you saying that any Conservative supporter from at least 1964 onwards was sharing a political base with racists ?

Perhaps that's why the Conservative leadership is obsessing about immigration and puts more immigration restrictions on Africans and Asians than it does on Europeans.

Peter Griffiths, Mp for Smethwick 1964 & later Portsmouth N. Conservative
Why do you mention Peter? I knew him when I was based in the area. Nice chap.

Note Boris Johnson's immediate repudiation of the BNP endorsement.

"I utterly and unreservedly condemn the BNP and have no desire whatsoever to receive a single second-preference vote from a BNP supporter," he said. "I hope as many Londoners as possible turn out on May 1 to prevent the election of a BNP candidate."

How long, if at all, Farage repudiates the endorsement?

Indeed. The Griffin Tweet was issued yesterday evening.

Nope. I learned it from The Times.

Funny you mention grooming in the North West, none of you lot linked to the big grooming story in the North West this week.

I'm not sure exactly what you're referring to by mentioning 1964, Mandela's incarceration possibly?

Whatever it is, I expect that 1964 Tories time-travelled to today would all be Kippers. 2014 Tories obviously aren't.
There was a general election in 1964 which included a rather infamous Conservative campaign.

A female Tory Minister made a spoof Commons speech on animal welfare in order to say an obscene word after a dare at a dinner with Navy officer friends.

Communities Minister Penny Mordaunt said ‘c**k’ six times, ‘lay’ or ‘laid’ five times and mentioned the names of at least six officers during a debate on poultry welfare.

Her speech, recorded in full in Parliament’s Hansard official report and broadcast on television, received a formal reply from a fellow Minister, who believed her interest in the

Speaker John Bercow was also duped, making copious notes as Naval Reservist Ms Mordaunt addressed the House.

I'm not aiming any vitriol. However, you do seem to play with the issue of race quite a lot, and it is one issue that when you go stomping in with your size 12s, you can end up saying something stupid.

You haven't aimed any harsh criticism at me? That's one of the definitions of vitriol that I know..

And do you have any other quickly accessible, maybe bookmarked, examples of my playing with the issue of race?

I've been accused of being a racist on here in the past, and just this evening one who accuses people who I disagree with of racism.

I've admitted in the past my difficulties in dealing with the complexities surrounding immigration. While I'm instinctively against an open door policy, most of the friends I made during my seven years living in London wouldn't have been there were it not for the lax immigration rules we had.

Am I racist, or a lover of immigration? Or both?

You're obviously the one who should make the final call on that.

It's got nothing to do with whether or not someone has a sense of humour, it's the fact that it was bringing the Commons into disrepute, (if that's possible given the low esteem it's already held in).
When she got her ministerial position, Penny Mordaunt didn't even know that she was responsible for the Fire Service. She actually asked the FBU on twitter why they were tweeting congratulations to her, and saying they looked forward to working with her.

Speaking of watching TV series - whenever I get a US TV series dvd made in the last decade, the sound is always Dolby Digital 5.1. Whenever I get a UK TV series on dvd, it's always Dolby two channel stereo.

Also pretty much all HD TV shows here have Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. It's part of the HD spec so why do UK dvds (which presumably were shot in HD orignally) not have the full sound?

Which party are white racists most likely to vote for in the election next year?

    Why don't you ask some?
I know that you know that I know that you know the answer to my question.

You not answering it doesn't change that fact.
    It's a stupid question.
It's a stupid question to those not worried about associating with obvious racists.

What, in case I offend the kippers?

Aim your vitriol at the "immigrants are great" report writers who classified the children of immigrants as non-native until their sixteenth birthday, not me.

I asked a simple question and didn't give any hint of my view on it. I don't think I've noticed you attack the insensitivity (at best) of those who highlight every Muslim indiscretion that appears in the Daily Mail.
"In our analysis, therefore, we consider immigrants’ children under the age of 16 as immigrants regardless of birth country but classify as natives everyone who is at least 16 and UK born, regardless of parents’ birthplace."

    http://www.cream-migration.org/files/FiscalEJ.pdf
Well, both my parents are immigrants.

I would be rather interested to see the percentage of 1964 Tories who are now Kippers. I may have been a bit bold in claiming that they'd all be such.

How many 'individuals' have called Muslims "ragheads"? I do remember hearing that term being used when I first went to flat race meetings at Newbury when I was about twelve, and thinking it was quite funny since the Sheikhs did seem to be wearing tea towels for hats.

It appears the best part of the Mail on Sunday front page splash is that it is based on a story reported on Thursday...

    ...in the Daily Mail.

@gabyhinsliff: Excitingly, that Penny Mordaunt splash in the MoS is apparently recycled from a two-day old diary story in, um, the Mail.

@gabyhinsliff: But it offers the opportunity to put the words "OBSCENE" and 'lewd' alongside a giant photo of a female MP. So, you know. NEWS.

OK - I'm confused - why would there be so many fewer HD channels than SD channels? Pretty much every channel here now broadcasts in both SD and HD.

It's not like HD is new. I've had an HD TV for over 8 years.

here is no equivalent to Freeview here - the FCC and broadcasters make the standards.

I believe there is one school of thought that says racism is whatever an observer thinks is racist.

Which is why some professional 'anti-racists' see racism everywhere.

But I would say that 'ragheads' is clearly a derogatory term.

I wouldn't presume to make that judgement. What I would say is that you (like many of your cohort) like to use racism as a 'killer argument' against your opponents. That was also the basis of our last disagreement. I don't find that racist but neither do I find it an advancement of the anti-racist cause, because it cheapens real racism.

You have a poor memory. Our last disagreement was due to my pointing out that someone was a "9-11 truther".

I still haven't accused anyone here of racism. I asked which party was most likely to attract racists. I can still understand your shame at the obvious answer.

Saw Imitation Game this evening, Cumberbatch excellent, as were the supporting cast and a fascinating story well told of an eccentric but brilliant character
  • A female Tory Minister made a spoof Commons speech on animal welfare in order to say an obscene word after a dare at a dinner with Navy officer friends.

Communities Minister Penny Mordaunt said ‘c**k’ six times, ‘lay’ or ‘laid’ five times and mentioned the names of at least six officers during a debate on poultry welfare.

Her speech, recorded in full in Parliament’s Hansard official report and broadcast on television, received a formal reply from a fellow Minister, who believed her interest in the
    subject was genuine.

Speaker John Bercow was also duped, making copious notes as Naval Reservist Ms Mordaunt addressed the House.

    Nope, because I don't care.

It's been bloody obvious to everyone who has known me that I'm Italian and not insulting their intelligence is, I find, the preferable way to start the relationship.

And unless someone is advocating sterilisation of immigrants, it is bloody obvious that immigrants will be starting families, except to those who think that babies are delivered by storks.

And it is jolly useful to have a measure of children born of, say, Polish stock as we Catholics have to provide school places for them.

Yes, the popularity of College Football is mind-blowing - until you think about it a little more carefully and take in the sheer size of the States. Firstly some pretty big cities don't actually have NFL teams, and so if you're a fan, college is the highest level you can logistically watch - most notably Los Angeles and UCLA, but also Austin and the Texas Longhorns - Austin being roughly double the population of Liverpool. Alabama (population 4.83m) has no teams at all in any of the major professional leagues. Secondly, even those teams who share a catchment area with an NFL team aren't too put out as each team only plays 8 guaranteed home games a season (or 7 now for some due to the London games), meaning that there's always going to be greater demand, unlike perhaps baseball where MLB teams play a ludicrous 162 game season, or basketball which has an 82 game regular season plus their own elongated play-offs. Add in the fact that it has the appeal of supporting your local team, whose players will always be 'yours' even when they graduate to the NFL and you've got something that's huge business.

  • Given that 1964 was 32 years before I could vote I think I can be forgiven for my ignorance of it.

I would be rather interested to see the percentage of 1964 Tories who are now Kippers. I may have been a bit bold in claiming that they'd all be such.

I imagine that most of the 1964 Tories are now dead.

How many 'individuals' have called Muslims "ragheads"? I do remember hearing that term being used when I first went to flat race meetings at Newbury when I was about twelve, and thinking it was quite funny since the Sheikhs did seem to be wearing tea towels for hats.

Derogatory racial sterotyping is often 'quite funny' if done well.

That doesn't mean you should do it.

I just use the 'ragheads' example as a contrast to those people here who obsess about one UKIP nobody calling another UKIP nobody 'Ting Tong'

For the record I think 'Ting Tong' is also derogatory and that Little Britain was a vastly overrated, deeply nasty 'comedy'.

Whether the UKIP nobodies viewed it in those terms I wouldn't know. But I would hope they do now.
