Greenland needs to hold firm and dare Trump to take military action . Although the GOP have generally been a spineless bunch this issue is one that might see a change there . You’ll still have the Trump fellators that will go along with it but I’d hope there’d be enough to say enough is enough .
Trump wants to buy Greenland, he doesn't actually want to invade it (which polls show over 3/4 of Americans oppose), that is just a typical Trump ruse so offering Greenlanders some billions to become American looks reasonable.

What is the point of the Prime Minister?

He has no vision. He has no strategy. He has no plan. He has no principles, at least none with which to underpin anything remotely resembling a coherent agenda. He has no political integrity. He has no courage.

He has no idea of where he wants to lead his nation. Nor, it seems, does he have the slightest clue of what the true character and identity of that nation actually is.

At noon today, I sat and watched Prime Minister’s Questions. As he attempted to defend his latest U-turn, Keir Starmer came out with the following statement.

‘They [The Tories] had more positions in 14 years than the Kama Sutra. No wonder they’re knackered, and they left the country screwed.’

This is the point we’ve now reached. The occupant of the greatest office of state reduced to peddling 1970s-style smutty inuendo at the Despatch Box.

What’s the point in Keir Starmer? Even he doesn’t know any more.

On the chief constable of west mids, I bet he’s feeling seriously annoyed. As far as he is concerned, he will think he’s done what the powers that be wanted. No serious trouble and the Islamists in Birmingham didn’t get called out. Wonder if he has a few nuggets of information to share if he is sacked.

Another case of it was the coverup, but also that it is him needing to take responsibility for his organisation's actions not his own, and someone not doing a sanity check on the AI?

If he had admitted the issue, would he still have been in a mess?

The PM just has to hold out until 2027 and then things will be easier (I jest, the HoL is not his biggest problem)

The Observer's Whitehall Editor, Cat Neilan, recently cited my analysis for Hogan Lovells, projecting that the UK government could eliminate the risk of defeat in the House of Lords by 2027.

There are no limits on the Prime Minister's appointment powers, and the extent of No. 10's ambitions are unclear. Media and public scrutiny could influence how far things go, but both are currently quite subdued. The Lords’ ability to delay bills provides some leverage, potentially encouraging the government to act reasonably if cooler heads prevail.

    Key stats:
    * Since the General Election, the government has been defeated 55 times in 119 Lords divisions, consistent with the previous Conservative government’s experience.
    * However, defeats are set to reduce significantly from 2026.
    * The Hereditary Peers Bill, progressing through the Lords, will remove 88 peers by this session’s end (only 4 are Labour), reducing defeats by 15% and lowering the average majority against the government from 75 to 55.
    * The Government has also been steadily increasing the number of Labour peers. There has been a 36 net gain since the General Election (45 new Labour peers but some are replacing retirees etc)
    * If appointments continue at this pace in 2025-26, defeats could halve. By 2026-27, they may vanish entirely, reducing the ability of the Lords to ask the Government to 'think again'

    * https://nitter.poast.org/nmdacosta/status/1996378088754594241#m

The Lords have at least been overegging it, arguably.

There have been a couple where they have voted down Manifesto Commitments aiui (Employment Rights Bill, Lords Reform), and there has been some dancing on pinheads to support non-violation of the Salisbury Convention.

I'm nuancing this as I'm not totally over the detail, but I have seen a couple of suggestions that the Salisbury Convention be put into law, and precedures revised to make sure it is respected.

For anyone interested, Wheels for Wellbeing have started putting their material out in response to the Mobility Aid consultation.

This is going to get a proper working over since there are a lot of things to be addressed. Its 30-50 years since the last lot of legislation, so we have to make it fit for the next 30-50 years. We do not want more wheelchairs locked up in police vehicle pounds because the police are not clear what they are.

If anyone would like to be kept in touch off forum, please PM me.

Here's the page with the basic argument:

the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Jewish Leadership Council.

They call on West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, Simon Foster, to sack the West Midlands Police chief.

Both groups say they "welcome" Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood's expression of "no confidence" in Craig Guildford.

They say the report from His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) into the issue has "confirmed our long-held concerns" that the force "sought evidence that supported a predetermined conclusion", and failed to "engage with the local Jewish community".

They call on Foster to "exercise his authority" and dismiss Guildford "without delay".

Birmingham's imams should similarly call for the Chief Constable's dismissal on the grounds police had failed "to engage with the local Islamic community" and slandered Muslims by suggesting they were a rabid mob who'd attack football fans.
    Good luck with that.

Not beyond the bounds of possibility that he bans the other three teams from entering.
And Scotland still don't get out of the group.

West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster has commented following calls to sack the West Midlands Police Chief Constable Craig Guildford.

As a reminder, Foster is the only person that has the power to sack Guildford. Earlier the home secretary said she no longer has confidence in the chief constable

    In a statement, he says:

“I acknowledge, recognise and understand the significant strength of feeling that is shared by many people, including myself, in connection with this contentious issue.

“His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary has written a letter to the Home Secretary to set out his ‘preliminary views’, in relation to the match assessment and categorisation carried out by West Midlands Police around the Maccabi Tel Aviv v’s Aston Villa fixture on 6 November 2025.

“I have been sent that letter having had no sight of, or briefing on, its contents before today. I must now give it careful and detailed consideration.

“The letter is not the final HMICFRS report. It describes how the Chief Inspector’s views may ‘develop or change’ as more information is gathered.

“I have listened to the Home Secretary’s statement in the House of Commons and the questions that followed.

“I await the Home Affairs Select Committee report.

"It is my statutory duty to hold the Chief Constable to account for the totality of policing in the West Midlands.

"In order to give all these issues full and proper consideration, I will be taking this matter to a meeting of my Accountability and Governance Board, held in public, on Tuesday 27 January 2026 and asking questions of the Chief Constable.

"In consideration of these matters, it is vital that all involved act in accordance with due process and the law at all times.”

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c394zlr8e12t

It's a lot easier for people (like the Home Sec here) to say 'sack someone now' if it happens to lie in someone else's gift to do so. As for the person who has to make the decision (like when it is the Home Sec's turn) the first thing they actually have to do is consider how this government and parliament has left them WRT the trivial matter of 'the rule of law' and how to painstakingly apply it to the facts of this case because if you get it wrong you will lose in court and be execrated for incompetence by the same people who shout at you now.

Forget resignations/sackings, I think crimes have likely been committed.
it's a complete nothing burger of hysteria, a load of politicians gonna be left looking foolish the next time the maccabi hooligans kick off
Its a nothing burger that a senior police officer lied to MPs using fake AI content to justify a decision...then lied about having ever used AI....its a view....
It's very much not a nothing burger.

    - The lying to a Parliamentary Select Committee and not just about what the police had done but lies about what the Dutch police had told his force, among many others.
    - The unprofessionalism - use of AI and figure to do proper checking and due diligence.
    - The manufacture of evidence: arguably a criminal offence.
    - The failure to take any action about criminal offences i.e. the threats by Islamist thugs to attack Maccabi fans, which may also have been racially aggravated crimes. Plus the reasons why they did so - namely the curious relationship with the mosque, whose CEO was on the interview panel (a fact which raises questions about the PCC's role in all this).
    - What some of the local MPs knew about the threats to visiting fans and when and what their relationship, if any, was with those making such threats.

    And so on.

I'm not sure whether you mean Motability there, or Mobility as a concept.

But it's a good thought - "hidden in plain sight" is everywhere. Many of the barriers that I now aim to complain about to my local Councillors I had been not noticing since I was at school, even primary school - which was the early 1970s,and at worst for me it was "get off the bike, wiggle, get back on". Then I started riding a cycle again around 2013 which highlighted some things, and had a mum who was a wheelchair user in her final 2 or 3 years.

I suddenly needed a wheelchair ramp as well at home, and I did not know much about those either.

If we think about it, every walking stick, Guide Dog, prosthetic leg and adapted shoe is a mobility aid. Some of them fit it with little adjustment needed, but others take a little more accommodation, and some (eg folding bikes, which are commonly used) are not perceived as mobility aids because they look like something standard.

That is all despite my mum being a Physio at a Special School for 3 decades, and my having gone to help there as part of my community service in my 6th form.

Walk time; have a good evening all.

Isn't it a bit from the Trump playbook ie making clear public gestures and statements, combined with enough of a tripwire on the ground? For 8 European countries to have coordinated their statement is clear.

I'm not sure how the troops work; if memory serves the basic Danish contingent are on the same base as some US personnel.

The Danes have a new "Arctic Security Budget" of about $5 billion over the next few years.

A token multinational force that the USA have to cross the Rubicon of actually shooting at or capturing raises the political risk of them acting, so I think this is sensible.

If they contest against other NATO troops we will be less able to brush it all under the carpet. Hopefully.

Trump is going to seize Greenland. European leaders need to get their backsides out of that Egyptian river and decide what they're going to do about that.
What they are going to do about it is absolutely fuck all.
I wish I didn't agree with you, but I do. If they were going to mount a credible defence of Greenland the logistics for it would be underway by now. But all that's happened is a token force of Danish troops deployed.

It really is quite disheartening. Europe deserves its reputation as a bloc too sacred to use force, even when their own territory is being invaded.
You don't need a credible defence - none exists. You just need to put enough troops on so there is a chance some aggro squaddie from Grimsby [insert European equivalents] actually takes a shot at them. That is possibly the only thing that might deter Trump.
And the threat is a simple one: if you invade Greenland, then the chances of Europeans ever buying American products is basically zero.
Unfortunately most Europeans wouldn't give a toss.

And if you're expecting Europeans to be willing to pay more taxes / accept lower benefits then you're going to be disappointed.

"He really f*cking means it you guys, stop acting like this is funny or not serious"
The European Union Treaty article 42(7) provides:

If a Member State is the victim of armed aggression on its territory, the other Member States shall have towards it an obligation of aid and assistance by all the means in their power, in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. This shall not prejudice the specific character of the security and defence policy of certain Member States.

Greenland is a member state of the EU since February last year. Any military attack on it will thus trigger this obligation. What the EU need to do is show that they are not willing to let the US march into Greenland. I would suggest elements of Eurocorps really ought to be deployed there now. Of course, they would not be able to resist a full throated US attack but they would make it clear what is involved, namely a declaration of war on the EU.
If we/they were serious there would already be a poison pill on Greenland.

This is why I'm so sceptical of pushes to increase defence spending. There is zero appetite to use it, so what's the point. We won't even seize Russian shadow fleet vessels fiddling with our cables.
Frankly there should already be a response to the threats.

Kick the Americans out of an American base in Europe that they value. Not the most important one, but something sufficiently important to show intent.
Is there an American base in Europe that they value? Like the bases are mainly there to protect Europe from Russia which isn't a goal Trump is interested in, and the Americans have been trying to wind down the resources they spend on Europe since at least the Obama administration.

The continued failure of the European political classes to realise that things have fundamentally changed is extraordinary.

You either stand up to Trump and tell him to fuck off. Or you do what he says. There is no 'negotiation'.
What, so he's not 'transactional' or a 'dealmaker'?
    No he's a c**t
Talking of which, and I have a multiple choice question for you all. Donald Trump has demanded that the DOJ investigate and prosecute:

    a) Officer Jonathan Ross?

    Or

    b) Renee Nicole Good's wife?

I am reminded of that infamous line in R. Dean Taylor's Indiana Wants Me.

    Yes it does!

Aren't we all, in some sense, preceded by sperm?

Starmer is shit. It’s not about being better than the Tories. We ll know they were shit. Being slightly less shit but still shit is not a positive.

Greenland. Can we tell Trump to fuck right off yet?

This isn't necessarily Starmer being shit.

It make sense to have a close ally on the inside explaining this to him, and the consequences, whilst other European countries buddy up with Denmark. That's not just talk. The UK does have a strong diplomatic network and influence with Trump, as demonstrated with recent deals.

If he had no-one telling him this, other than his sycophantic MAGA crew then he might not join the dots, think everyone is against him, and then do something really stupid.

BREAKING: The UK is sending a single military officer to Greenland at the request of Denmark to participate in a multi-nation exercise

    Is it @Dura_Ace ?
My reserve commitment has long since expired.

It'll be a punishment detail for some staff officer who has incurred the wrath of a General by spilling the tea or something. Greenland in January is a hardly a fun posting.
Either that, or he's some super soldier who can take out entire companies single handed.

    But more likely this.

Remember all that terrible fraud in Minnesota that MAGA influencers and @Sandpit keep going on about? The guy who prosecuted those cases, assistant US attorney Joe Thompson, has resigned because of this (the failure to investigate Ross and the witch-hunt of Good's widow). Going after the widow of someone shot by ICE is more important to Trump than going after fraud.

Reporting says the instructions to try and dig for dirt on the widow came from "top officials" at the Department of Justice. I've not seen an explicit connection made to Trump, but Trump, Noem etc. have all been singing from the same hymn sheet.

So technically you are right and I am wrong. This has absolutely nothing to do with Donald Trump. He is a mere bystander...

My brewing buddy got a book of chicken recipes for Christmas called "How To Eat Cock"

I was amused, but a bit disappointed by it; there was, for example, no chapter of appetisers called "Cock Teasers"

    I should rewrite it

"Reuters has reported that Donald Trump appears to have decided on a military strike against Iran, with action potentially coming within the next 24 hours.

Two European officials told the news agency that US military intervention appeared likely, with one saying it could take place within the next day.

An Israeli official also said it appeared Trump had decided to intervene, although the scope and timing of any strike had yet to be made clear.

Ah, I can still remember when Donald Trump promised a more isolationist foreign policy.
About that peace prize.... do you think he has given up?
The World Cup is one of the few things the rest of the world has on the US right now.
Too late, he's already won the FIFA peace prize.

Oh you mean boycott the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. That could become quite an important solidarity protest.

It turns out that for over 50 years (e.g. back into 1920s) the DIS had a tradition of allowing the editor of Janes Fighting Ships to have access to naval intelligence. As noted "I am not very happy that the present arrangements would entirely satisfy the Security Commission"!

...It turned out that Captain Moore had completely unrestricted access to DIS naval intelligence products, despite "holding no security clearance at all"!

As was rightly noted - "in the event of a leakage, our position would be quite indefensible".
