Paracetamol saved my life after having that first insane covid jab!
I thought there was an argument that fever is adaptive, and therefore you should let a fever burn hot. So an argument against taking paracetamol against fever, at least for adults.
Your body gets hot because that rise in temperature might be enough to kill the virus/bacteria that have infected it.
Unfortunately, the rate of evolution for viruses and bacteria is several orders of magnitude faster than for humans. This means that increasing your temperature is unlikely to kill the invaders, because those that were so easily dispatched did not get a chance to reproduce. Humans, though, still do it even though it hasn't worked for 50,000 years because the evolutionary disadvantage is so slight.
It's a very complex subject, but the fact that it's widespread across the animal kingdom suggests it's evolutionary selected. Probably several mechanisms involved, not simply a raised temp killing pathogens.
Starmer gambles on ‘levelling up’-style initiative to tackle Reform threat
Deprived areas of the UK will be given tens of millions of pounds each from a new fund that Keir Starmer hopes will help Labour tackle the threat posed by Reform UK.
The prime minister will launch the regeneration initiative on Thursday, gambling that an updated version of “levelling up” will address anger about Britain’s broken communities.
He will say the money will help “get rid of the boarded-up shops, shuttered youth clubs and crumbling parks that have become symbols of a system that stopped listening”.
I really wish the British media would focus on the Russian shithousery than Charlie Kirk and Jimmy Kimmel.
In that context, it’s worth noting that Kirk called Zelensky (not Putin) a “petulant child” who was “responsible for a million deaths”.
In Kirk’s defence, while admitting it’s likely to be the worst thing he’s on record as saying, that was on the day of the first disasterous meeting between the two leaders in the White House, and he was joining in with a Twitter pile-on.
I’ll keep defending Charlie Kirk on here, because he was at his heart a good man who didn’t deserve to suffer his fate, and that if we were all to be judged by our worst online comments then the world would not be a better place.
He certainly didn’t deserve what happened to him. I make no judgment about whether he was good or bad as a person.
The more you see of him, the more you see that he was a good person, genuinely engaged in the youth movement and willing to talk to anyone.
sure, if you can skip the whole racist dog whistle stuff
The videos from the Labour leadership election show Starmer being very evasive as to who financed his campaign. The other candidates published donors names on the website before the vote, but Sir Keir didn’t, hiding behind ‘process’… quelle surprise

Well and not wasted. There has been a lot of attention of the wastage during COVID on PPE etc, but I know of some scandalous uses "levelling up" money was spent that goes beyond the nonsense of stone chessboards without any chess pieces.

Starmer and labour promise the earth with all these announcements which means nothing without tangible evidence of progress which is years away if at all
Concerning B Johnson. I still hold him as the most likely next Tory PM. By some time in the next parliament, migration will be a solved problem. And the Boriswave will fall down the pecking order of concerns. Cakegate will be history into legend into myth by then.
Reform’s fiscal contradictions might well then do for them. Not that Boris has a good record on this. But Labour’s will be 10x worse by then and they won’t be trusted. And the yellow peril will be as unserious as ever. I can only sigh with disappointment at the public utterances of their leadership and new gen MPs.
It’s far from obvious where the tories find the new figure that can appeals across the spectrum and bring them back to government from what might be a low double digit base of MPs. Much excitement here on fresh skins like Katie Lam. Hmmm. I don’t think you need look beyond the guy that’s already done it, and has a burning desire to do it again.
He’d start with some notable Reform defections from those that have lost faith in Farage / Tice. Probably in the red wall. And build from there.
This scenario will be scoffed at I’m sure. But most underestimate the naked ambition of the man. And those that scoff loudest would have been those that said the same of Trump 4 years ago too.
What on earth did you prompt ChatGPT with, for it to come up with that nonsense?
I remember in times gone by in this forum when I used to take a strident view on Russia, that the West need to punch them firmly if they got out of line, that their much vaunted military wasnt that great and that Putin was a chancer with a weak hand to play.
I was variously described as a warmonger, that Russia was this almighty powerful outfit and so on.

If he became PM again after managing to unite backers and opponents of his against him after his last disastrous spell in charge, it would be hard to argue he didn’t have some kind of special sauce!
In case any of you were wondering where I’ve been I’ve been Raptured! Happened last night. It’s lovely up here and I look forward to seeing 2 of you in person here in due course.
I'm wondering if I want to spend eternity with a bunch of lawyers... 🙂
Strangely, a common theme of movies about heaven and the afterlife is that its a bit of a bureaucracy, with added lawyers. See for example "A Matter of Life and Death" or even "Betelgeuse".
I am sure that @DougSeal will be happy there with angels chucking mackerel at him all day, while he reclines on a cloud.

This Burnham saga is beginning to grate on me . He failed miserably two times challenging for the leadership and seems to now think he can walk on water and is Labours saviour .
Unless someone stands aside to provide him with a by-election chance then this paper talk is just nonsense .
Burnham is not nonsense as much as you would want him to be, but a real threat to Starmer from within the labour membership and if Lucy Powell wins than a real and dangerous division is extremely likely
He is a champion of the north and has considerable support within the movement
Yeah, like you know all about relative support within "the movement.".

Unless we reinstate exit checks, not much we can do about this. Always possible to fly via a third country.
We could decline to let him back in on the grounds that his asylum claim is evidently fraudulent?
I have some question how a recent arrival on a boat with nothing can afford 2 months vacation to Afghanistan along with a load of other European city breaks.....
Andy Burnham has said MPs have privately called on him to challenge Sir Keir Starmer to become prime minister.
In the Telegraph the Manchester mayor, who is not currently an MP, said he was not "plotting to get back" to Westminster but in the interview he did not rule out running again for the leadership.
"I stood twice to be leader of the Labour Party. And I think that tells you, doesn't it?"
The mayor also told the Telegraph, external that Number 10 had created a "climate of fear" among some MPs.

But how do we know he went to Afghanistan? Unless we're going to ban people who went on the ferry to France.
Isn’t the story that he posted on social media about his holiday back to Kabul?
What would be the proposed rule? Can't go back for how many years after asylum granted. Five? Ten? Until regime change?
It's infuriating, I agree. But hard to legislate against.
We do have a separate problem with people taking benefits, subletting their council flat, and living high on the hog in their home countries. But that's an enforcement issue, again. The legal scope for rescinding is slight.

I assume his asylum application included a fear of persecution if he returned. Given he returned willingly for an extended period, it’s clear that was a lie.
Am I the only person for whom paracetamol feels like it has never significantly lowered the level of any pain? I take it almost because I'm supposed to...
It never does anything for me on its own, I prefer to go to a chemist and get co-codamol (paracetamol + codeine) which works a lot better.
I do find it darkly hilarious that paracetamol is available everywhere and widely recommended even though it's quite a dangerous drug if taken above the recommended dose, but add a little codeine and it's now behind the counter, 10x more expensive and the staff have to give you a spiel about not abusing it.

Probably because @Leon is on the ozempic and isn't drinking so much any more.
Isn't it interesting how things that used to be regarded as cheerful are now regarded as a nuisance? For example in the 80s and 90s young people used to walk around with ghetto blasters on public transport and most people had a fairly happy attitude towards the music they were playing, but now it's a bad thing if people play music publicly.

I am not sure they did.
Also, the problem is orders of magnitude worse now that everybody has devices. You have somebody playing social media videos, then somebody takes a call but can't hear the person they are talking to because of the video playing, so they talk loudly, then somebody else turns up their music because they can't hear it now because of the video and the person on the phone, and rise and repeat, until everybody is shouting at their phones or playing media on full blast.

If I understand the historical document "Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home" correctly, the playing of loud music by a ghetto blaster on a bus is greeted by a Vulcan nerve pinch, unconsciousness and applause from the rest of the bus.
Looks like paracetamol use in pregnancy correlates with ADHD, autism and intellectual disability; sibling analysis - which I guess is the closest thing to double blinding a pregnancy trial suggests this is because of the underlying factors involved in taking paracetamol. As an aside, drug use during pregnancy seems under researched generally

I suspect if you go back throughout history, as people age 3-4 decades, especially men, they have always started regarding things they found cheerful earlier on, a nuisance as they get older.

The BBC stories on anti social behaviour in Southampton and asylum seeker taxis this week really showcase broken Britain and why Reform are doing well. We really have lost our common sense to bureaucracy and process. That is not just expensive but socially very damaging too.

Tik Tok* and the like appear to provide a platform to share these anti-social behaviour stories and provide encouragement. Family member who works at a provincial rail station comments that post-covid the behaviour, fare dodging, and general nihilist behaviour has increased. They are thinking of moving back out of the UK again if it doesn't get better.
But how would a process state deal with this? Perhaps if they lower the voting age to 16, they could simultaneously match it to the age of criminal responsibility. Might make a few of them think twice.
* Which version of Tik Tok will we get in the UK going forward. The Chinese version or the MAGA version?

Association but not necessarily correlation.
Basically someone who is taking paracetamol daily for 4 weeks is probably ill.

The reality of this story is a bit different. For reasons inexplicable to me, their planned development at Bridge (a few miles away from my vineyard) kept getting planning permission blocked. Not the only winery to have suffered aggressive nimbyism.
The “slowdown in sales” is partially true. Chapel Down planned it to accommodate significant expansion, but the rate of growth has slowed a bit as the market digests massive increases in volume over the last few years. So slower growth rather than contraction.

Paracetemol certainly works for me. Does the trick while you wait for the MR team or helicopter to arrive.
Codeine is much better but grim side-effects and the risk you get addicted. I got off it as quickly as I could, though that led to me being over-protective of my injury and extending the physiotherapy.

I was amused how the news was saying he was “on manoeuvres”, this is a dirty great ticker tape parade with bands, dancing girls and circus elephants, not manoeuvres.
They played his pitch from 10 years ago and it I sounded like one of those naff montages the BBC do whenever Wales are playing in a Six Nations match where it’s all fake portentous and emotional. As much as I dislike Starmer I think the vanity and emptiness of Nurnham is potentially much worse for the country.

“Acetaminophen is the safest pain reliever option for pregnant women as needed throughout their entire pregnancy,” the company said in a statement. “Without it, women face dangerous choices: suffer through conditions like fever that are potentially harmful to both mom and baby or use riskier alternatives. High fevers and pain are widely recognized as potential risks to a pregnancy if left untreated.”

So what gives? Change of mind? Fake tweets?
Starmer is in big trouble
I wouldn't have expected that from Boulton
Deprived areas of the UK will be given tens of millions of pounds each from a new fund that Keir Starmer hopes will help Labour tackle the threat posed by Reform UK.
The prime minister will launch the regeneration initiative on Thursday, gambling that an updated version of “levelling up” will address anger about Britain’s broken communities.
He will say the money will help “get rid of the boarded-up shops, shuttered youth clubs and crumbling parks that have become symbols of a system that stopped listening”.

The media got distracted very quickly from the lack of process over Mandelson.

Hopefully you all get it now.

This #10 aren't very nice to their own team seems to be a recurring story.
It's infuriating, I agree. But hard to legislate against.
We do have a separate problem with people taking benefits, subletting their council flat, and living high on the hog in their home countries. But that's an enforcement issue, again. The legal scope for rescinding is slight.
I do find it darkly hilarious that paracetamol is available everywhere and widely recommended even though it's quite a dangerous drug if taken above the recommended dose, but add a little codeine and it's now behind the counter, 10x more expensive and the staff have to give you a spiel about not abusing it.
The company announced on Wednesday that it would no longer build a massive winery east of Canterbury, citing a succession of delays in obtaining planning permission

Farage and Reform won't fix any of it, and will probably make it worse, but unless Labour get radical and focused straight away we shall be in the hands of Farage and his billionaire friends soon.
But how would a process state deal with this? Perhaps if they lower the voting age to 16, they could simultaneously match it to the age of criminal responsibility. Might make a few of them think twice.
* Which version of Tik Tok will we get in the UK going forward. The Chinese version or the MAGA version?

All the best lawyers.
She'll probably end up being appointed to the Supreme Court.
Basically someone who is taking paracetamol daily for 4 weeks is probably ill.
(That said there is increasing scientific interest in the inflammatory cascade and the image that has on a whole range of issues)
The “slowdown in sales” is partially true. Chapel Down planned it to accommodate significant expansion, but the rate of growth has slowed a bit as the market digests massive increases in volume over the last few years. So slower growth rather than contraction.
I remember IngSoc was the claimed ideology, but I don't recall The Party having much in the way of ideology or economic programme. Indeed it took very little interest in the proles.

Codeine is much better but grim side-effects and the risk you get addicted. I got off it as quickly as I could, though that led to me being over-protective of my injury and extending the physiotherapy.
