No, this is not a Reform UK-y type of place. And do you know how many Gail's we have?

We don’t have Gail’s in North Britain but I presume you mean the product rather than Ms Sweeney? American Eagle jeans are shit and I’d assumed that Gail’s were a step above that.

The crucial part of that question is accessing porn...which a lot of the objections people have aren't the crux of the issue.
For people who are very online, I agree. But we are a minority.

And I mostly posted that poll because the percentage amused me. I know...
And I was told that the Online Safety Act was about to bring down the government Britons with strong right arms hit the streets in a frustrated frenzy of fapping.

Its almost as if Albanian taxi drivers and eccentric millionaires don't really know anything about the country
Nah, the reason public aren't rioting about the OSA is because they rioting about the secret Afghan story.
The free porn industry has been impoverishing many step moms. It may well be that more paid for porn (after all if you are going to give card details you might as well get the full version) puts a bit of money in their hands. Maybe even enough to afford clothing.

I don't believe that is how the industry works now. One company basically controls the whole western market from the free stuff to the paid for stuff. Performers don't get paid that much anymore for professional shoots / videos, but it is all a showcase to their OF where they get all the revenue and that is where the real money is for personalised stuff...and things like high end escorting.

It’s not like me to wade into a debate and declare myself the victor, but I think I win: because my father-in-law’s name was Happy Birthday, changed by deed poll

And you literally had to call him “Happy”. As in “how’s it going, Happy?”

Unfortunately, Happy wasn’t happy about me marrying his daughter, given that I was two years older than Happy

The Badger Lobby: 'It was caused by the pixies.'

    (I exaggerate only slightly.)
Killing badgers without TB is likely to allow badgers WITH TB to move into their patch.

Of the top 10 financial losses for farmers, TB came in 11th.

9 of the other 10 were down to bad husbandry practices.
There are very few badgers left without TB now. That's the issue.

As for 'bad husbandry,' what is worse husbandry than allowing badgers infected with a disease and transmitting it to livestock on somebody's land?

I'm beginning to grasp why this disaster has happened. Talking about tests being too expensive when they didn't work, people saying their preferred option despite the actual impossibility of it being vaccinating badgers, and now again the perturbation claim - which was right 25 years ago, but not now - shows just how sterile and unproductive the debate is. And without informed debate, nothing will happen.

(The irony of the Krebs report which first noted it, and was seized on by activists as a reason not to cull, was that it proved a causal link between TB in badgers and TB in cattle by doing so.)
The badgers got hit by a PR exercise by the hedgehogs. Less hedgehog-munching badgers = more badger-food hedgehogs
Badger PR peak was during the original Harry Hill show, featuring Tasmin Archer Badger, Gareth Southgate Badger, and the Badger Parade.

In our area there was a four year vaccination of badgers DEFRA trial in its third year (having spent over 500k) when DEFRA licensed a continued cull in 2019 (iirc). It looks like they didn’t want to know. They just wanted to curry favour with the NFU.

The cull looked very political and not particularly data driven. To me. It was about the NFU and the number of farmers that put vote conservative banners up in their fields.

I can identify a bandwagon of ecological destruction when I see it.

    baby name day!
Here are the names that are dying out
    – A mere 9 boys called Norman last year
    – Rodney = 8
    – Nigel = 5
    – Giles = 3
And not a single Piers was registered! (If it's 2 or fewer, it's not released for data reasons, so it's possible 2 were)

In contrast there were 161 boys called Zorawar
    Zakariyya = 63
    Theo-James = 22
    Paris = 14
    London = 7
    Lucifer = 7

No wonder there are no Piers’s. Naming your child after Piers Morgan should lead to immediate removal into care.
People naming their child Lucifer should go on a list.

    More antisemites.

Tel Aviv, right now: thousands protest Israel’s starvation of Gaza and relentless killing of its people, calling the government to end the brutal attacks and bring back the hostages.

The fact that Israel allows protests like this is one of the reasons we should be supporting Israel in this conflict.

I cannot follow that logic at all.

Does the fact the government allowed farmers to protest mean that the IHT changes were the right thing to do? The Iraq War? The Online Safety Bill?

No, this is not a Reform UK-y type of place. And do you know how many Gail's we have?

    (I don't know how many Gail's we have, but I think it's 5.)
I thought Gails were the Sydney Sweeney of bakeries these days for progressives?
What's wrong with Gail's? (I mean, I'm sure there are plenty of things wrong with Gail's,* but to what are you referring?)

    * I can't eat gluten. Like the SNP on votes on English matters, I excuse myself from taking a view.
The owner of Gails has views that many of the left don't like and also the general gentrification / squeezing out local businesses has led to some backlash.

    I never liked Gail’s but that’s not why I’m opposed’: Walthamstow’s revolt

last week this desirable corner of north-east London hit the news with a change.org petition to prevent the upmarket cafe and bakery chain Gail’s,

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/article/2024/aug/18/i-never-liked-gails-but-thats-not-why-im-opposed-walthamstows-revolt-and-the-awkward-paradox-for-middle-class-london
Gail's is just a bit basic isn't it. It's Clapham in bakery form.
    Perfect description of Gail's.
But the bread is so much better than supermarket loaves, and there's not exactly a surplus of independent bakeries in my corner of SW London. Why the hate?
Are we all not still making our own sourdough bread at home every day?
I don't make sourdough but I do use a bread machine to make our own bread and buy 16kg sacks of organic flour online to keep costs down - good quality fresh bread without additives, inexpensive, delicious and takes about a minute to prepare.
It's quite a stretch to say that sticking a bunch of ingredients into a machine constitutes "mak[ing y]our own bread".
My precise words were "I do use a bread machine to make our own bread" so I'm not sure I really see the misrepresentation here. Seems like rather extreme pedantry, even by your impressive standards.

On the other hand, if the Palestinians are mass deported to form a worldwide diaspora, why would they not also agitate for a return to their ancestral lands? After all, Jews kept that dream for Millenia, so they should of all people understand.

Quite the community note on The Good Law's pinned tweet.

    https://x.com/GoodLawProject

Conceptually, is there a difference? "Go away, get your papers in order, then we'll come back in November/December to decide" is not that different from "Okay we'll meet again later to see if you can proceed", and considerably different from "No"

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced the construction of a massive $200 million, 90,000-square-foot Ballroom at the White House.

I saw the other day that they are also ripping up the grass at the rose garden and replacing with stone and a wooden deck for dancing. Adding to the gilding he’s had done of the Oval Office he’s truly turning the White House into Mar a lago north. We would probs be doing them a favour if we burnt it down again.

A secretive Whitehall “spy” unit has been used by the Government to target social media posts criticising migrant hotels and “two-tier policing”.

The Telegraph can reveal that officials working for Peter Kyle, the Technology Secretary, have flagged videos with “concerning narratives” to social media giants including TikTok, warning that they were “exacerbating tensions” on the streets.

Emails recovered by a US congressional committee show that civil servants have complained to tech firms about content mentioning asylum seekers, immigration and two-tier policing.

The dossier has emerged as ministers battle claims that the UK is censoring social media with the Online Safety Act, including from allies of Donald Trump, the US president.

The crucial part of that question is accessing porn...which a lot of the objections people have aren't the crux of the issue.

Trump now has his press secretary telling the Nobel committee that it is well past the time he should receive the peace prize.

    It is just pathetic.

Um - given that he became President (again) in January and awards are announced in October - they've not had an opportunity to turn him down yet.
They should bring forward the announcement. I mean it's not like anyone else is going to get it is it?
Might as well go the whole hog and give him the Physics Prize as well. Just because.

Dine and dash. More shoplifting that absolutely isn't happening:

Allowing people to consume expensive meals before they've paid for them is one of those great examples of civilisation in action.
Which will come to end shortly by sound of things. You order, you pay, your food comes a few minutes or whatever later.

It'll become like hiring a car - you hand over your credit card details before you've perused the menu

Yep. Only a matter of time.

Maybe shops will be the same? Face recognition on entrance, linked to credit details. There's no way the industry wont find ways to stop the industrial shoplifting in the end.
Or they lock and explosive collar on you when you enter and it only gets disarmed once you pay. Otherwise you leave and it blows up. Saves time and money for the justice system as a side bonus.

Minus 5, plus two. That "others" is messing me up.
Most likely it's a slight increase in SNP, Plaid, etc. Maybe even Corbyn's new party.

It's the CMO they need to get rid of, I expect a period of upwards failing for him as the board won't be able to u-turn on this so easily. Don't be surprised if he gets a promotion in this shakeup before they end up needing a clearout.

A bit of churn and a bit of "NOTA".

Just as Reform took votes from Labour, Your Party will pick up from all sorts of places. Voters are far more idiosyncratic than they are generally given credit for.

The area has more LibDem councillors than Green ones. I think it goes Lab, LibDem, Con, Green. The local LibDems have selected a candidate already.

At the general election, it was...

    Labour 48%
    Conservative 17%
    Green 14%
    Liberal Democrats 13%
    Reform UK 6%
    Rejoin EU 1%

No, this is not a Reform UK-y type of place. And do you know how many Gail's we have?

Not really, they're a NOTA party. There will be low information voters who are frustrated with the current government and know that they're left wing rather than right wing so will just tick that box.

For the umpteenth time, just because one vote share goes up and another goes down does not mean there has been a transfer of voters between the two. It's a regular and bizarre error made by PBers.

So just literature, chemistry and....? to go.
The Fields medal is going to be tricky as you have to be under 40, but I'm sure Trump's team will find a way.
All they have to do is proof that 79 < 40 and they are good to go.

I've seen plenty of accountants do that - so it can't be that difficult.

And anyway it is making your own bread. It is cooking. How is it any different from mixing ingredients and putting them in an oven. Admittedly making a loaf from a recipe and putting it in a bread maker is easy (although I have seen and had a few failures), but so are many other cooking recipes and you can be very creative with a bread maker. I use it to do simple bread (I made one tonight straight out of a recipe book) but also experiment with recipes. I also use it just to make dough so as to make naans, pizzas, stollen, french bread, ciabatta, rolls, so I am just taking the boring bit out of the creation eg mixing the dough with still a lot more stuff to do to get to the final product

Am I not cooking if I make a Spag Bol with dried pasta or if I didn't grow the Seville oranges I used in the marmalade I make.

It is all cooking. Just some more difficult than others. And a bread maker is a fantastic machine which makes the best bread, or an excellent dough, which is fortunate as it happens to be one of my favourite foods.

    TV drama recommendation

    Reacher, Season 3, Prime

By far the best so far. Season 1 was fun but v forgettable. Season 2 was woke and awful. Season 3 starts a bit lame but gets better - and then better - and by the end is an absolutely orgiastic fun fest of appalling violence, made even more enjoyable by some truly hideous villains. You cheer as they die

    A blast
