For years, the Tories peddled the myth that all immigration is positive because migrants work and contribute to society. Quite simply, it was a lie and they knew it – yet they covered it up.
The Tories will never be forgiven for what they have done to our country. They have failed on border security, failed on welfare and failed to deliver for working people. They broke Britain and it will take Reform to fix it.
Under a Reform-led government, we will ban all foreign nationals from receiving benefits. If you want to live in this country, you must work, contribute to society and adhere to our culture. We cannot allow foreigners to benefit off the backs of hard-working Britons while the rest of the country suffers.
Reform will introduce an immediate freeze on all immigration: illegal migrants will be deported and legal migration will pause. When it resumes, we will ensure the UK welcomes only the best and brightest – the world’s top doctors, lawyers and entrepreneurs – in small numbers.
So even if a foreign national resident of the UK had worked for years then got sick they would not receive any help at all. Why don’t Reform just go all in and force foreign nationals to wear an identifier so Brits know who the alleged scrounges are ! . And what does adhere to Brit culture mean , are foreigners allowed to celebrate something from their ancestral country or will the culture police be there to round them up for re-education !
Actually, that happens. If you move here legally - from Canada, say - you have to take out insurance against any claim you might make on the NHS. Which doesn't seem unreasonable. I'd be interested how universally applied that is, though.
Fascinating to me why people in the uk think this at all controversial. Go and work in Asia or the Middle East and see what happens to your visa if you say you can’t work anymore because you suddenly realised you have adult ADHD.
In quite a few European countries, various benefits can only be accessed by paying into the system, first. Kinda insurance style.
I am aware that “Singapore on Thames” became a running joke among a certain type after 2016. But honestly Lee Kuan Yew figured out almost every aspect of how to run a modern state years ago. Welfare, healthcare, housing, immigration, religious tolerance, productivity, infrastructure, foreign relations, defence, criminal justice. Some aspects were certainly not everyone’s cup of tea but honestly we should just transpose his book to the governance of the uk and be done with it.

I'm not sure what it means tbh. Singapore isn't some Thatcherite ideal. It has much in common with China.
Singapore is, of course, a country which deliberately imports lots of low-skilled labor and is also highly regulated.
Very low fertility rate too, but with a very high tertiary education rate.
What they need is their kids trained as plumbers and nail bar technicians.

We were told here yesterday that the rescued Afghans now had a 'debt of honour' to the UK.
Looks like they're trying to pay it by grifting even more money.
Being on that email really was the golden ticket for some.
On further golden ticket news:
One Afghan in a family of four will cost taxpayers about £1.25 million over three years if they are put into MoD transitional accommodation, including a hotel.
It costs half that amount if social housing is found for them instead, according to government figures
So £200k per year for social housing for a family of four Afghans ???
Where's this social housing ? Mayfair, Belgravia or South Kensington ?

This is why the scandal will only get worse. The ramifications are obviously horrific if you can EXTRAPOLATE, rather than relying on some dreadful YouGov poll

Is it really!! Goodness! :-)
Go and read his book and see what you think. I suggest you know not what you’re talking about if you use this as a reason to say his solutions are of no relevance.
There will be things to learn from Pore as there is from many places. But you said we should take the template in full. That's plain daft.
There’s vanishingly little in their management of the country that would not also work very well here. Though sometimes it would need a local twist. It was also a hard slog, it took 20-30 years to really embed his vision. Everyone here loses attention when a tv greengrocer goes to work with no pants on.
I know the place quite well. It's authoritarian. Chock full of social control. I'm surprised that somebody (you) who considered our Covid response to be tantamount to a police state would be gazing longingly at it.
Their Covid response was the reason I left. I am not homosexual but I have friends who are that left due to the official social intolerance, even though unofficially the social control hasn’t been there in a long time.
As I say, they don’t get everything right. But almost all areas of policy they smash it. Just copy the bits which very obviously work.
I know China very well. I worked for those commie bastards for years and have seen under the dirty fingernails right across the inland provinces in a way that casual visitors to Shanghai do not. Singapore is nothing like it.

I'm pretty sure that the Quran instructs that we convert or pay extra taxes towards Jihad against ourselves
It's pure peace
That's a bit of a clunky punchline.
I really didn't mean to joke. This is the Quran we're talking about. If I've got anything wrong in the gist of of what I'm saying, then I hope a Muslim scholar will correct me
But I'm pretty sure that the Quran says that infidels must be converted, heavily taxed, or killed pbuh

Mounjaro is fucking weird. You simply stop eating. Halfway through, your brain goes, Nope, enough, stop
Some bloke in the Speccie this week has written a piece saying it also stops you drinking.
It does, to an extent. The extent being - if you drink too much, you feel fucking awful (and I never used to get hangovers)
I'm still trying to find the sweet spot. I can still (ins'allah) really enjoy one or two G&Ts, and indeed some red wine after that. But if I go over a whole bottle of red (which used to be a doddle, for me) UGH
The ideal seems to be about 1 G&T and 2-3 glasses of red. But I'm still experimenting

2. Afghans consistently come top or near-top of rapes-by-nationality across Europe
"Yes, according to UK Ministry of Justice data (2021-2023) via FOI, Afghans in the UK have the highest per capita sexual offence conviction rate at 59 per 10,000, compared to the British rate of ~3 per 10,000. Eritrea follows at 54. Sources: Centre for Migration Control,"

I don't think it's Trump, but a close associate, donor(s) or family member may be on the list in some fashion. Not enough to bring down the government but enough to do the MAGA movement a lot of damage but I think that the Trump team may be realising that the damage being done now is worse than just coming clean and drawing a line under it.
My guess is that right now they are cleaning it as much as they can and they're trying to lower expectations so when they do finally release it in a few weeks they can say "see, told you there was nothing to worry about". The MAGA crowd may be gullible enough to buy it too.
If there was something in the Epstein files that implicated Trump then surely the Dems would have released that when they had the chance . For that reason I’m not buying any sources saying something is about to get reported .
It might not be Trump but someone close to him or his business empire that he knew about and did nothing after the first Epstein conviction for running an underage prostitution ring.
Or it might be linked with senior democrats - remember that Trump was a New York Democrat for many years.
I have a strong suspicion that Epstein made sure that he got people involved from all sides, as protection.
True about Epstein but it seems unlikely Trump is alienating his base in order to protect a senior Democrat.

It's a citystate in asia pacific with half the population of London.
Its always "Singapore on Thames" isn't it? Never "Singapore on Tyne" or "Singapore on Trent"
I'm not sure what it means tbh. Singapore isn't some Thatcherite ideal. It has much in common with China.
Singapore is, of course, a country which deliberately imports lots of low-skilled labor and is also highly regulated.

Remember it was a last minute volte-face on releasing the Epstein files, so presumably something important buried deep in the footnotes where a bright intern found it just days ago.
That suggests it is not Trump, as he'd be the first name they'd have looked for, and not anyone else famous as they'd have been the second to 76th names looked for.
I'd like to believe the rumours Epstein was working for the CIA, KGB or Mossad, one of those anyway, or possibly two, but I can't make it work. (Shades of Cap'n Bob Maxwell!)

Yes every time something annoys me, I have to remind myself that none of it really matters given the technology tsunami that’s about to crash over our heads. The time might not be far away when we look back fondly on the summer of 2025 as an innocent time of quasi pasty-gate.

Singapore also makes a metric shit-tonne of money from ships using the Strait of Malacca.

X is rife with a theory that the Home Office and other departments are now completely penetrated by Muslim activist workers who, naturally, help to determine UKG policy in a way that favours evermore Muslim migration to the UK. And fair enough if that is what they believe and desire, and they are legally hired
I have no idea if this is true, However, it would explain some of the utterly inexplicable decisions made by the UKG in recent years. I cannot think of another explanation besides They are all mad, or They are all paid by China
I am nonetheless open to alternative interpretations, because this one is quite depressing and decidedly ominous

AIUI they gave only denied the existence of the *Epstein client list*
That’s a very narrow definition
I can quite see he wouldn’t have a document marked “list of clients for aspiring DA to prosecute”
I mean that if one goes down, they all go down.

You think a shadowy cabal of Muslims arranged Brexit in order to replace European FOM workers with Islamic immigrants? It's possible. Do you think Cameron was one of them? Or Boris? Or you railing against a second referendum on pb?
Of course it could instead be MOD civil servants and politicians got a super-injunction a year or so after the spreadsheet was leaked so we would not realise they are a bunch of over-educated twats with no common sense. CYA and all that.

IMO, no. This is an area that AI / ML is already eating for lunch. And there has been a glut of data science graduates, because a few years ago it was thought to be a great opportunity because big data, everybody wants to moneyball their business, so loads of unis created masters in it.

Also, what possible MoD transitional housing costs £400,000 plus pounds per.
I increasingly think that we have two parallel financial systems in this country,
There's the one I, everyone I know and my employer is in.
And then there's the one the government is in.
But if you don’t have 8 full time staff monitoring the spend, it might get mis-spent.
Remember, "this story will be forgotten by tomorrow" - @Eabhal, yesterday
Hey - I just wondered if it would explode, as you suggested, or fade away to nothing like most of the stuff you get excited by. It's telling that the one thing that really cut through was the removal of a freebie - the winter fuel payment.
I measure this stuff by how it peaks and remains on the top 10 BBC News most read articles, that being the most pervasive media. It's been bubbling between 6th and 9th all day (currently 8th). And that Gold Standard YouGov polling suggests the public have - at the very least - mixed views on the whole thing anyway.
Can anyone remember if we got a BBC News push notification on it? That also tends to steer public awareness and opinion.

Two parallel views of economic reality more like.
One where the government says it hasn't raised taxes on working people despite hugely increasing them on farmers, small business owners, employees, entrepreneurs, etc. etc. And where it says it's a pro-growth government despite snuffing out our fragile economic recovery and drowning businesses in red tape. And where it lies that there was a £22 billion black hole that they didn't know about, even though the figures were published and open for anyone to inspect. And where it pretends that Rachel Reeves, the lightest of lightweights, is up to perhaps the most difficult job in the country.
And, despite their dismal approval ratings, a surprising number of people still buy into their blatant lying gaslighting.

Also, what possible MoD transitional housing costs £400,000 plus pounds per.
I increasingly think that we have two parallel financial systems in this country,
There's the one I, everyone I know and my employer is in.
And then there's the one the government is in.
And a surprising number of people still buy into their blatant lying gaslighting.
I'd maybe say there are two economies. The statistical economy, and the lived economy.

This is why the scandal will only get worse. The ramifications are obviously horrific if you can EXTRAPOLATE, rather than relying on some dreadful YouGov poll
None of this would be happening if we had not joined the coalition of the willing and invaded Afghanistan.
Bin Laden would still be alive in the Afghan mountains though
I think there are other timelines where he ended up being killed or captured without occupying Afghanistan for twenty years.
There are timelines where he played topless volleyball on Mars. I'm not sure how far that gets us.

Except that's all wrong. The taxes have gone up on people inheriting land (not farmers, as not all own the land they farm, particularly in Scotland), large business owners (not small business owners, who in many cases have seen their taxes cut as a result of the increased employment allowance), and there have been no direct tax increases on employees.
There's no doubt that some of the changes they have made are likely to have a negative effect on employment, as discussed at length on here, but it's a bit rich of you to talk about "blatant lying gaslighting".
I suppose the logic now is that Maxwell will need to be pardoned next week as she is the victim of a hoax.
Except we know that Epstein had a plane that made repeated trips, and therefore there are flight logs. Its simply impossible for the Epstein files to not exist.
Though if Trump was involved, and if the girls are still alive, why haven't we seen more come forward?
I don't think it's Trump, but a close associate, donor(s) or family member may be on the list in some fashion. Not enough to bring down the government but enough to do the MAGA movement a lot of damage but I think that the Trump team may be realising that the damage being done now is worse than just coming clean and drawing a line under it.
My guess is that right now they are cleaning it as much as they can and they're trying to lower expectations so when they do finally release it in a few weeks they can say "see, told you there was nothing to worry about". The MAGA crowd may be gullible enough to buy it too.

Isn't the business rates rise exclusively for buildings worth £500k in rent per year? So again, it's hardly small businesses that are getting hit by that.
I think a progressive system of tax for business is quite a good thing. Will help to make those in the north of England more competitive, fend off some natural monopolies etc etc.
Edit: it's actually a cut for lower value premises from 2026-27. Why didn't Labour sell it as a small business budget? Relative to large employers of minimum wage staff, small business has done really well out of it.

IMO, no. This is an area that AI / ML is already eating for lunch. And there has been a glut of data science graduates, because a few years ago it was thought to be a great opportunity because big data, everybody wants to moneyball their business, so loads of unis created masters in it.

I think a progressive system of tax for business is quite a good thing. Will help to make those in the north of England more competitive, fend off some natural monopolies etc etc.
The UK already has a huge problem with massive imbalance in terms of business sizings compared to the likes of Germany. We have loads and loads of micro businesses and then the giant multi-national corps. The changes have made it much more expensive to be a business that employs 10s or 100s of people. Where say Amazon already use loads of gig economy workers who "self contractors" and are automating away loads of permanent jobs in the warehouses.
As for business rates, no it isn't mega corps again,
Retailers currently benefiting from the relief will see their business rates bills increase in April on average from £3,751 a year to £9,003, and restaurants will see a rise of £5,563 to £13,351 a year, according to Colliers.
The average pub will also see its rates bill go up from £4,017 to £9,642 a year, Colliers found, while nightclubs – already under significant pressure – will see their annual bills rise from £7,479 to £18,245.

I get that but I don't think you can claim that the budget has particularly hammered small businesses. It's the big employers of minimum wage staff in large buildings (e.g. Tesco, airports etc) that have been whacked the hardest.
There's obviously room for a much bigger reform which sees the tax burden steadily increase with the size of the business. Whether you do that by property value, employment or profits is the question.

Can you move sideways into teaching via one of the non-pgce routes at your current school or trust?
Totally off-topic but I have discovered the most life-changing application. It's called Wispr Flow and it's AI-driven voice recognition.
So you install it on your PC, press a button, and talk - it cleans up all the text and just puts it in whatever app you're using. Saves tons of time.
And yes, I did use it for that comment.
What's new? Your old man was using a Dictaphone in 1963 (probably). Voice recognition dictation software has been around for decades, surely.
The fundamental difference is that it isn't just voice dictation. It also removes the 'errs', adds punctuation, and even adds things like bullet points. So basically, your random stream of consciousness text ends up looking like well-formatted, well-reasoned, etc.

Also, what possible MoD transitional housing costs £400,000 plus pounds per.
I increasingly think that we have two parallel financial systems in this country,
There's the one I, everyone I know and my employer is in.
And then there's the one the government is in.
And a surprising number of people still buy into their blatant lying gaslighting.
By small you mean micro businesses and even then it isn't 100% true, business rates have gone up significantly, minimum wage, new workers rights, all cost a business. I don't class businesses with 10s of people as "large".
Or there's room to cut spending and stop putting up taxes. We need £100bn worth of cuts to the government budget and everyone needs to feel the pain.
Not happening with a Labour government at the mercy of leftwing backbenchers
X is rife with a theory that the Home Office and other departments are now completely penetrated by Muslim activist workers who, naturally, help to determine UKG policy in a way that favours evermore Muslim migration to the UK. And fair enough if that is what they believe and desire, and they are legally hired
I have no idea if this is true, However, it would explain some of the utterly inexplicable decisions made by the UKG in recent years. I cannot think of another explanation besides They are all mad, or They are all paid by China
I am nonetheless open to alternative interpretations, because this one is quite depressing and decidedly ominous
have you considered the alternative interpretation is that you're so fucking dumb you internalise all the guff you read on social media and end up repeating it ad nauseam on here
Sorry, forgetting that all other parties can be criticised but critiquing the Lib Dem’s here is a no no.
All,good

Give people with more than two kids more money
Heres another 10 billion for the WASPE leeches
All funded by a wealth tax
Not economic growth as we don’t want an housebuilding by us, or reservoirs.
@Taz lol. Think you need to check your link. You have jumped to a conclusion as to why I am confused. Bit defensive there. No issues with you criticizing the LDs. Just you weren't. Suggest you take a look at your link.

Testicles descended? Yup
No longer a virgin? Yup
You mean you actually had sex??? Yup
Not with a dog like @IanB2 ? Nope
Moved away from Mummy? Yep
You buy your own shirts, and you can move around for hours without going home to Mum for hugs? Yup

There's the one I, everyone I know and my employer is in.

My genuine feeling is that we are heading for multiple epochal crises, esp surrounding race/politics and technology. These will culminate in the next 5-10 years, possibly sooner
As Elon says in one of his latest livestreams "we are lucky to be alive in the most interesting moment in human history". I really really believe this
Now, this is gonna happen, like it or not. So what do I do? Go and buy some tiny cave in New Zealand? To avoid it? Fuck that shit. This is fascinating! I've spent my life seeking risk and excitement, why avoid it now when it is REALLY risky but REALLY exciting??
No, I'm here for the denouement. And London is probably one of the best places on earth to witness this, for multiple reasons. I've been gifted front row seats, and I am getting paid to give my opinion on the spectacle, to boot
All I am doing is making sure my seats are really soft and comfy, with a good drinks supply and decent but Mounjaro-friendly snacks. Then: Eyes down. Here we go
Though if Trump was involved, and if the girls are still alive, why haven't we seen more come forward?
Quite often I walk past Google DeepMind in King's X and I just think "fuck". It is one mile and a beautiful canal stroll from my flat. I love that. It is happening right here (and a couple of other places around the world)
Two datapoints:
1. The UK is now the rape capital of Europe
"UK Tops Europe in 2024 With 114 Rapes per 100,000, Surpassing Sweden’s 96 Amid Rising Sexual Violence"

My guess is that right now they are cleaning it as much as they can and they're trying to lower expectations so when they do finally release it in a few weeks they can say "see, told you there was nothing to worry about". The MAGA crowd may be gullible enough to buy it too.

From the BBC.
We are a laughing stock.

That’s a very narrow definition
I can quite see he wouldn’t have a document marked “list of clients for aspiring DA to prosecute”
A room full of explosives and everyone holding a candle….
Of course it could instead be MOD civil servants and politicians got a super-injunction a year or so after the spreadsheet was leaked so we would not realise they are a bunch of over-educated twats with no common sense. CYA and all that.
If it didn't affect him in some way, the files would be released, whatever else they might harbour.

People with time at the OU or UHI were much more interesting candidates than the 3000 who had all done the same Masters (albeit in different institutions) and had learned the same tools and skills their lecturers had learned 20 years ago when they took their masters.

What Maxwell and Epstein were doing working together I will leave you to ponder.
