There's dozens more paragraphs of tweet bilge if you can face it.
It's just so brainless and tacky now, our politics. I'm sick of it. Can't we go back to how it was? Like, tomorrow is Sunday. Everybody's free. So there ought to be a serious lengthy interview on tv of a leading politician. All this social media shit is no substitute for that. It looks like more democracy but it means less.
But these things do exist, you’re just too “Guardian and BBC for me!” To realise
It’s called the long form podcast
Three hours with Joe Rogan examines a politician much more intensely than any 40 minutes with Brian Walden in the 1970s
There is no hiding in 3 hours. Even if the questions are generally soft (and they are not always, with Rogan, he’s very good at sliding in some tricky stuff amid the banter) your persona is revealed
The success of the long form podcast shows there is a real hunger for highly detailed and forensic politics (and detailed science, history, football, astrology, quantum sexodynamics, whatever). It’s one of the more encouraging signs of the times. People DO want seriousness
Liz Truss has correctly pointed out that this is a weakness in the UK media ecosystem. They have Joe Rogan and we have Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart.
"We need independent media. We need the Joe Rogans and Ben Shapiros of the UK."
Well, she's the closest thing we have to Rogan's random walk nuttiness, and the niche is wide open for whenever she wishes to have a go - if she thinks that there's an audience of millions in the UK who prefer fruit loops over fruit cocktails.
There's some appetite for it, Fortean Times still has a print circulation in 5 figures. She can put her studio in a blue pyramid.
Joe Rogan's habit is to do things anyway, whilst accepting that he has no knowledge whatsoever of the subject. An ideal partner for Truss:
While admitting that he has "zero understanding" of Canada's political system, Rogan opposed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, calling him "a fucking dictator", and called Canada "communist" and "fucked". Rogan also said that he liked Trudeau prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. ... On September 1, 2021, Rogan tested positive for the (Covid) virus. Soon after, he released an online video reporting on the status of his condition and stating that he had begun a regimen including monoclonal antibodies, prednisone, azithromycin, NAD drip, a vitamin drip, as well as ivermectin, an antiparasitic drug that medical experts say is not an effective treatment for viruses such as COVID-19. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Rogan
Rogan is incredibly clever and well informed. He’s the best paid and most listened podcaster in the world for a reason
Recall he sometimes does these 3 hour interviews several times a week, for months on end. Yet he makes them all appear effortless
The research behind the scenes must be intense and crazy
Is there a segment you would recommend as an example of a good interview?
God that’s difficult, there are so many
The ones with Musk are good - eg the famous one where Musk and Rogan got stoned
You got a sense of how remarkably smart Musk is, but also how tormented by his own Aspergery brain
One of my favourites is the one with anti woke comedian Andrew Doyle. That chemistry was excellent
They are by no means all good. Anything about wrestling or martial arts is deadly dull (for me). The vaccine shit is boring. Sometimes you sense Rogan really doesn’t care and it drags
But when he’s properly interested in a guest and the guest has a lot to say on a profound topic it’s peerless
The problem with Rogan is the same as with almost every interviewer in the modern era: that is, he's in the business of generating content that his listeners agree with.
And the Trump interview is a classic example of this. Trump says why he wants tariffs, and Rogan basically just accepts whatever Trump says as fact.
Now, I agree that we've gone all "gotcha" with interviews in the UK.
But there's at least one question that really should have been asked:
"President Trump, you say that your tariff policy can eliminate the trade deficit, end income tax and bring manufacturing back to the US. But aren't those goals somewhat contradictory?
To maximise revenues and replace income taxes would require the US to continue to import lots of things. While if we eliminate the trade deficit and bring manufacturing onshore, then how could we possibly raise enough money from tariffs to make a dent into the amount raised from income tax?"
"Mr Trump, you say the direction the country is going in is unsustainable, but if we go in the opposite direction, won't it also become unsustainable eventually?"
Maybe yes, but that doesn't mean that it's wrong to change direction.
I don't understand how that relates to my comment.
Because the 'contradiction' depends on the policy succeeding to an extreme extent.

The connection between long grass and a retired man being killed in a car abounds with possibilities.
I have an image of a particularly long post-prandial nap whilst illegally parked on a council verge, only for a day of the triffids-type scenario whereby the grass entirely overtook the car and the man suffocated.

I think (and this is probably a first in my experience) young Billy has a point.
In the short term, tariffs replace income tax as Americans continue to import almost everything from China.
In the longer term, the price increase from tariffs cause domestic competition to emerge thus onshoring manufacturing (and balancing the trade deficit).
It is nonsense on stilts, but there is a theoretical logic to it.
(And, finding myself on the same side of an argument as williamglenn, I shall now retire in shock and horror).

Yes, but closing the trade deficit doesn't mean zero imports.
If someone has a policy of promoting capital investment by disincentivising hiring new workers, you haven't exposed a fatal contradiction by pointing out that if they succeed then there will be no jobs left at all. Reductio ad absurdum works for mathematical proofs but not policymaking.
Not only do they not get it, they show no signs of ever getting it.
I have a 'sponsored' ad on my Facebook feed at the moment. It's from Hampshire & Isle of Wight constabulary advertising joining the force. It uses a young LGBT+ officer caked in tattoos who talks the whole video through about being "unapologetically herself" at work and being a member of the "LGBT+ community", alive to "hate incidents" and having an opportunity to give an unrelenting focus on solving them here.
This is is a County where lots of people have real concerns about antisocial behaviour, violent crime and burglaries, and would prefer the police to have an unrelenting focus on those and recruiting people who have a passion for preserving the peace, rather than promoting themselves and identity politics.

He was pulling out at a crossroads near Froyle and couldn't see the oncoming car as he was in a low-slung convertible and the verge grass was well over a metre high. Because No Mow May.
The other car coming down the carriageway was speeding and whacked into him at well over 60mph.

I think as of now I would position Joe Rogan as an "experience" not an interview show, sitting very loose to the disciplines of the journalist. I'll have a listen.
I think it's an interesting question as to who is a good interviewer, and what are the characteristics of a "good interview". IMO as there are good speaking and good listening required for a speech, so a good interviewer and a good guest are required for an interview.
As for who is a good interviewer - hmm. I find Freddie Gray too soft and pliant with his guests, and Emily Maitlis' image with me has suffered because they are not as on the ball as I would expect in the News Agents, and I have an impression they do not recognise their own boundaries of expertise.
I think the Leading strand of the Rest is Politics is good in exploring views, and giving interviewees time to express themselves, though Rory and Alistair are a little self-indulgent imo. They do their research well.
I always found Hard Talk to be a little too dedicated to being confrontational for the sake of it.
I think that Nick Robinson is good as an interviewer eg on Profile or Political Thinking. And good "format" interviews I like are Open Country and On Your Farm, but those are really conversations.
Reaching of names of my best ever interviewers, I think it is probably Anthony Clare, Mary Goldring and Peter Day - though the last 2 are perhaps more nearly analysts than interviewers.
One thing that I think would be useful to reflect on is which interviews - podcast or radio - use silence effectively. It always slightly frightens people who are making radio. I'd be interested to hear any interviews Rowan Williams has done; he asks excellent questions.
The new Doctor Who is going to wind people up even more than the last one lol
Given its now on extended hiatus the rage will pass
Awaiting Disney to pay out before they set the budget. Doubt they will leave it off air for long.
They also flashed up 'introducing Billie Piper' but not 'as the doctor' so a little RTD fake out to annoy everyone He should have a full reset and have the interim Billie Piper demi doctor seek out Chris Eccleston
Some of the Big Finish audio drama's would have made very good 'timelines'. But sadly, we're left with people vaguely running about and some iffy SFX.
And I say this as someone who has watched The Web Planet more than once.
They manage to get 2 of the worst 3 doctors together on screen utterly pointlessly too. Cameo for the sake of it with zero plot requirement or effect
I gave up on New-Who early in the Matt Smith era. I tried a Peter Capaldi episode and the writing was so bad I had to turn it off.
Capaldi's acting made it bearable just about but I only really enjoyed Eccleston and Smith. RTD is STILL running with his Last Of the Time Lords (except all the ones that show up and Susan and etc) bollocks.
David Tennant is the best actor, although all the New Who actors have been better than Classic Who. Of the writer/producers, RTD is too fond of deus ex machina endings, Moffatt loved overcomplicated arcs and paradoxes, Chibnall was Chibnall. Disney proved a false dawn.
Errr: it's Trump's stated aim, to replace income tax with tariffs.

Federal Income tax in the US brings in $5 trillion per year.
It's not an unreasonable question to ask how you could possibly replace it with tariffs, when total US imports of tariffable products are $3.5 trillion.

Joe Rogan's podcast does quite well over here and is usually in the top dozen or so, although there are various charts and it is not always clear what they are ranking.
Omnipresent are The Rest is Politics, The Rest is History, The Rest is Entertainment and The Rest is Football, all produced by Goalhanger. The BBC should find out who runs Goalhanger and sign him up.
I can report that despite Sir Keir Traitor’s bleatings, e-gates have not been opened for Brits in the EU. He’s gonna have a lot of disappointed British voters fuming at him on holibobs this summer. What an idiot
I can however report that I am now in my…. HUNDREDTH COUNTRY. A lifetime goal achieved
100 countries!!
Yes ok it’s Luxembourg. So also possibly the most boring country on earth. But that’s kind of fitting
Go everywhere, young man!
But he said we were all excited by his prime negotiation win. This can't be right
It’s such desperately crap basic retail politics. If you can’t deliver, don’t promise. Instead he promised and he hasn’t delivered
He will hack off another million holidaying British voters this summer, for no reason at all other than that he is terrible at comms
The structure of the deal is a mistake.
Should have been
- 3 years fishing rights - If, after that, e gates are implemented for less than x% of journeys, or less than x billion in orders from common European defence fund, then no extension.
The Spectator is running a piece saying we might be excluded from the Defense Fund anyway, by the French
So what did Starmer actually get for giving away TWELVE YEARS of fishing rights (when the French were terrified we’d play hardball)? He got absolutely nothing. He got empty promises that mean absolutely nothing (as we now see). He’s a fucking shrieking poo-faced moron and dangerously incompetent. Everything he touches turns to dreck
I hate to break it to you but your hero Boris Johnson effectively negotiated a permanent fisheries agreement. While it could in principle lapse in 2026 so do other parts of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement, carefully chosen by the EU to be an unacceptably high cost for the UK, including energy trading.
Then why did the EU insist we agree to extend it by 12 years when 5 years until the next re-negotiation would have done fine?
EU wants the fishing deal; UK wants to pretend it's temporary. In that respect Starmer has conceded more than Johnson, although if Starmer does win concessions on other things it will be at minimal cost given the fishing arrangement in practice will continue anyway.
It strikes me Starmer may have done Farage a favour if it is he who is PM after 2029. Farage can castigate his predecessor without having to blow up the agreement.
‘A historic betrayal’: Murkowski slams Trump administration revoking protections for Afghan immigrants
https://www.politico.com/news/2025/05/30/lisa-murkowski-trump-afghan-tps-00377222 ... “This decision endangers thousands of lives, including Afghans who stood by the United States,” Murkowski and Shaheen — the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee — wrote. “This decision represents a historic betrayal of promises made and undermines the values we fought for far more than 20 years in Afghanistan.” The letter — which was sent May 23 and released Friday — comes amid reports that the State Department is shuttering the office that coordinated Afghan resettlement for those who helped with the war effort, part of an agency-wide reorganization aligning with the Trump administration’s moves to reduce foreign aid and assistance and refocus on “America First” priorities...
I'm also puzzled what this has to do with "protecting the border".

Plus the show now has several real problems. Classic Who was based off the serials of the time: 26 eps per year scattered across six or seven stories, each at teatime on Saturday. The 2005 reboot was based on Buffy: one 45 minute adventure per week. But now it's all streaming and binging and old-school telly is dying on its arse. What format should the show take in 2027? Assuming it even returns? And who should the showrunner be? Sally Wainwright? J. Michael Straczynski (who has just moved to the UK)? Who would want it?
Several fatal car accidents, including one near me in Hampshire because the council used it as an excuse not to cut the grass and a retired man in a car was then killed.
They were then sued.
That would be a stupid council. The 'meme' is admirable.

Off topic, but important for anyone who wants to understand recent American politics:
It isn’t so much that this was said in an article — as where the article was published:
"The intellectual framework of pluralism seems sturdier than that of D.E.I., which focuses on certain aspects of identity in a way that arguably runs afoul of America’s civil rights laws."
Well, yes.

(The article, “The Pluralism Pivot”, by Emma Green, describes how DEI is losing out to “Pluralism”, even on college campuses. The Pluralism she describes sounds much like the liberalism of the 1960’s and 1970’s.)
Inter Milan were very lucky to beat Barcelona and have been found out .
Don't take this away from PSG
Nobody would have beaten them tonight
I’m not but Barcelona would have put up a better show . Inter Milan were pedestrian. Ironic that PSG win the Champions League after their star trio departed .
Errr: it's Trump's stated aim, to replace income tax with tariffs.

Federal Income tax in the US brings in $5 trillion per year.
It's not an unreasonable question to ask how you could possibly replace it with tariffs, when total US imports of tariffable products are $3.5 trillion.

We need Walden to interrogate Starmer on the source of his right-wing inclinations.
"Pwime Minister, it has been alleged that your Irish advisor Morgan McSweeney is whispering things in your ear..."
I'd pay to see it. SKS would be good, I think, going by his Desert Island Discs interview, but do we have a Walden? Surely we do. We're not that far gone.
That Desert Island Discs is your equivalent of HYUFD's "Boris wins back x-amount of voters according to that one poll"
Did you catch it? You should for balance. It's only fair. Eg I listened to all of Enoch's "rivers" speech the other day with my red wine and nuts before dinner.
Like Sir Keir and his Father working in a factory, my Dad listened to it, so I know what it's like
Ah so you haven't. I'll see if I can link it on some future thread one day.
All Desert Island Discs are on Spotify, so I have it at my fingertips should I ever feel like listening. I caught him on a podcast I really like called Football Cliches; guests have to name their obscure and quirky, leftfield likes and dislikes of football - Sir Keir's likes were "football, celebrations and goals"
As for Powell, like him or loathe him, every politico should watch his interview/war with David Frost, a veritable battle. It used to be on YouTube, alas no more. But I have the DVD... although no DVD player... I can't very well put it on for the boys in the car... young Enoch and Nigel are still at the Peppa Pig stage
Nothing worse than straining to be quirky. A lot of what gets described as authentic is actually shallow self-indulgence. Eg Boris, Galloway, Rees Mogg, all this sort of "ooo look at me being myself" sort of nonsense.
You are right there. But Sir Keir really missed the point of the show, and he was in very friendly company; they were willing him to be entertaining, alas he just couldn’t do it
He just isn't entertaining. This is the long and short of it. My point is that's authentic, because I'm sure he isn't in private either. So we're not getting some fake manufacturered "persona" we're getting the person. The country should be grown up enough to accept that, I think. Appreciate it even. But what do I know. Perhaps I'm just old fashioned. Perhaps I'm out of sync with the modern world. It wouldn't be too surprising if I am. I'm 64.
Tenant is dreadful but thats a personal dislike.
He's a good actor, but I recognised that he's a bit marmite. And his Shakespeare efforts weren't great.
Several fatal car accidents, including one near me in Hampshire because the council used it as an excuse not to cut the grass and a retired man in a car was then killed.
They were then sued.
I have not really noticed it, other than on recreation grounds.
Here, they always cut one mower width along the edge of the verge and left the rest.
Do you have a link to a report of one of the incidents?
NEW: Attorney General approved Lucy Connolly's prosecution and is facing calls to quit.
Under the Public Order Act 1986, the stirring up racial hatred offence requires the Attorney General to consent to any prosecutions. The requirement was designed to act as a safeguard for free speech.
After the unrest, the AG said that sentences for online posts were “a stark warning that you cannot hide behind your keyboard”.
Badenoch and Chris Philip call for Lord Hermer to be sacked.
Assuming that the statement about the approval being required is correct, why should he resign?

Rogan is rather tabloid. It's not quite what I meant. But yes, it's lengthy alright and he's quite personable.
Is saying “f*** you” to Zelenskyy an example of how personable he is?
He’s anti-vax, and he’s promoted HIV denialism. He is not serious.

Angry people making an angry statement about the utter fucked-up-ness of the UK (and who can blame them). I seriously doubt these would translate into YES votes in any Sindyref2 (which I now think will never happen)
All this EDI stuff needs to end. Purge it all.
Hampstead and Isle of Wight constabulary do not want you to work for them, so it doesn’t matter what you thought of their recruitment ad.

The commentary about police culture, and "being herself", is important given the history of bullying and abuse in the police force. That's part of the same cultural issue as police thinking of themselves as being above the law, misuse of PNC information for finding out where a woman they fancy lives, and the rest.
The commentary about Hate Incidents, I am - like you - not convinced by.
Several fatal car accidents, including one near me in Hampshire because the council used it as an excuse not to cut the grass and a retired man in a car was then killed.
They were then sued.
The connection between long grass and a retired man being killed in a car abounds with possibilities.
I have an image of a particularly long post-prandial nap whilst illegally parked on a council verge, only for a day of the triffids-type scenario whereby the grass entirely overtook the car and the man suffocated.
Am I roughly right?
He was pulling out at a crossroads near Froyle and couldn't see the oncoming car as he was in a low-slung convertible and the verge grass was well over a metre high. Because No Mow May.
The other car coming down the carriageway was speeding and whacked into him at well over 60mph.
He was killed instantly.
That's the Golden Pot crossroads?
Fair comment in the very circs with a convertible (perhaps not a wise route to take if a local in that type of vehicle?), however it has been notorious for a very long time.
I'd want the section of the B3349 for half a mile in each direction treated as part of the village with a 40mph limit. The extra time for one mile at 40 not 60 is 30 seconds, so hardly a serious delay.
Glancing at the history, Hampshire LHA do not seem to be very attentive, so sympathy for that.

Hen & Chicken, near Froyle on the A31, but yes - close. And there was a nasty accident at the Golden Pot only last week.
It's now a road I try and avoid approaching from the side.
I don't the point. Trump just wasn't interested in his first term - why would he be interested now?
It's not the presentation, it's the President.
Typo - I don't see the point.
I think he is interested, but obviously has a specific style of taking in info - this is a clever way of ensuring he 'reads' the brief. I can see other benefits too - the best way of learning is teaching, so those preparing the 'TV show' will also become better informed.

The curious thing is that, if that possible outcome is correct, 37% of the vote (SNP+Green) is within 1 of giving an overall majority in Holyrood again. Which, in a partly proportional system, seems remarkable.

"Mr President, Russia is winning, the Ukrainians are fascists, and the Europeans are fuckers."

This is a widely held view on my side of the political fence.

The letter — which was sent May 23 and released Friday — comes amid reports that the State Department is shuttering the office that coordinated Afghan resettlement for those who helped with the war effort, part of an agency-wide reorganization aligning with the Trump administration’s moves to reduce foreign aid and assistance and refocus on “America First” priorities...
