Hopefully I will be better soon, and I have lots of work to do

I’ll be interested to see what this does for community relations in some of our more diverse cities.

TWO FRONT WAR FOR ME - Both my neighbours are Muslim. Such is life!
Why ? Are they of Pakistani heritage ? The war is India v Pakistan not India v Islam.
How did modern Pakistan and India come about?
    Not really answered my question.

Will all Muslims naturally support Pakistan, they don’t in the case of Palestine.
Will the UK media take sides in this, as they have with Israel v Gaza?

The reaction to a bog standard social security agreement, that’s good news for British expats, Indian expats, business and both economies is mind boggling.

My firm has a few thousand people in the UK and a few thousand each in various other countries including India. At the moment of one of my team is sent to spend a couple of years in Germany, or Korea, or the Philippines or various other places they only pay NI once, here in Britain. But if they go to India they currently pay it here and in India. We send several dozen people on assignment to our Indian office every year, and they send a similar number here, and the double taxation is a very real cost. The same is true across hundreds of multinationals. Double taxation of posted workers is unfair, and economically stupid. It hits British workers going abroad just as much as vice versa.

The Tories are utterly hypocritical and shameless on this. At least Reform don’t pretend to want to encourage Indian business or entrepreneurs. But in one breath Kemi and Co are moaning that repealing the non dom rules mean poor old rich Indians will leave the country because they have to pay more tax, in the next they are claiming that having people pay tax only once on the same income is two tier tax. And then in the third breath they’re on their second handbrake turn and objecting to inheritance tax on the principle that you shouldn’t be taxed twice on the same income.

The Lib Dem’s will vote against it. Presumably they don’t want to encourage Indian businesses and Entrepreneurs too.

They’re just opposing for the sake of it.
Yes, there’s probably a bit of that. But at least it’s not a deal they were negotiating on pretty much the same terms only a few months ago in government.

The main principled objection to this would be about Modi and the rule of law, but that’s true of several states were negotiating FTAs with.

    Mountbatten’s utter stupidity.
Possibly, though I have a theory, which is probably bollocks, that Mountbatten KNEW full well about Mr Nehru's (alleged) affair with Edwina (Lady Mountbatten), and got his revenge by urging India to refer the Kashmir dispute to the nascent UN, thus, in a way, legitimizing Pakistan's claim to that territory.

Kashmir strikes me as more of a traditional irredentist conflict, like Donbass and Crimea, or Alsace-Lorraine, rather than a religious proxy war.
I used to work with a couple of Indian guys, proud British Hindus, who only ever got animated over this issue. I remember there was some spat in the Kargil Mountains. They weren’t happy. Their view was very much it’s our land not theirs. Their animosity was to Pakistan rather than Islam. My limited experience of people emotionally involved in this conflict mirrors your view.

However this was a while ago and the dynamic may have changed since then.

Ditto dodgy asylum seekers in 4 star hotels as honest people spend years trying to get the right to remain

Meanwhile tax payers are quietly enraged, and very high taxpayers simply leave

This is the frog boiling of an entire nation and it will end with a reform government and then something worse if we don’t change course

I find your constant ghoulish prophecies of "A Reform Government or something WORSE" quite irritating. What is wrong with a Reform Government? Reform are no more right wing than Major's Tory Government in the early 90's - in many respects the last decent one we had. They're certainly no righter wing than you, so please grow some moral courage and stop these daft 'more in sorrow than in anger' warnings.
What is wrong with a Reform government? Well, there are no obviously outstanding candidates for government so that the fact there is lots potentially wrong matters less than it might but it still matters.

    Here are three things:

    1) Inexperience. Listen to (say) Blair, Mark Carney or Cameron for five minutes and ask whether Reform will have front bench to speak for the UK in the corridors of power.
    2) From the 2024 effort - 2029 manifesto unknown - their economics is somewhere between meaningless and catastrophic. It is not possible to articulate what they mean about tax, spend, deficit, debt etc. Their figures don't add up. They are not alone in this, but of course their USP is that unlike all the others they are honest and for the people and will get stuff done.
    3) They have some unpleasant friends and their leader is in many ways an unsatisfactory team player.

I agree they may well not be right wing, except on migration (if that counts as right wing). They are social democrats really, like everyone else. Their voters will leave them no choice about that.
That is all true, but it is also true of Conservatives and some of it, to an extent Labour too.
Of course. I think you understate the reality. In particular Labour (for whom I would reluctantly vote if there were an election tomorrow) are displaying a degree of inexperience in timing, decisions, communication and narrative skills which are astonishing; following the election they had a huge audience who love their country willing them to do well, both those who voted for them and others, because it felt like a liberation from chaos. The polls and last week's voting figures tell the next bit of the sad story.

I think it might have been Barty who called out your 4* hotel lie last week, citing Copthorne who were undergoing difficult trading prior to COVID and latterly asylum. Whoever it was specified the requirements for a hotel to be 4* and explained that all the 4*edness had been stripped out of Copthorne locations for our asylum seeking friends.

Yet you are still allowed to post nonsense unchallenged. What next? Quoting Andrew Tate's X account as source material. Oh wait, apologies, that was Nigel Farage.
Good luck in going to the voters while saying “it WAS a four star hotel when we took it over and gave it to asylum seekers, but we closed the gym and they only get laundry done twice a week, and free heath care, and immediate dental work, and you’re paying for it all, and you can’t use the hotel. So it’s really only like a weird 3 star with a private hospital. That you are paying for. So that these men can wander around your town freaking you out. Vote for more of this!”
I don't think people pointing out that you are full of shit are trying to persuade voters of anything. They are just trying to point out to you that you are full of shit.

Why is it so difficult for you to grasp this simple point?

How did modern Pakistan and India come about?
    Mountbatten’s utter stupidity.
Partition was inevitable after 1942 and the Quit India campaign. The Congress leaders were under house arrest giving Jinnah a free hand to agitate for a muslim state.

How Mountbatten actually implemented partition was pretty rubbish, but by then events had overtaken any control that he could exert.

I have seen the actual coffee table that the division was decided around. It's in the Viceroys Lodge in Simla.

Presumably they don’t want to encourage Indian businesses and Entrepreneurs too.

    https://news.sky.com/story/politics-latest-local-elections-labour-reform-starmer-farage-tories-lib-dems-greens-12593360
The Lib Dems don’t like it because it’s a post-Brexit trade deal and they think we should focus on the EU. They are wrong on this one, it’s a decent deal - better than I expected.

They wouldn't know a principle of one sat on their face. Utterly without shame. People can sense the dishonesty; it doesn't matter how much the prat in a pond horses around for the cameras.
Nope, not going to rise to the trolling. I am a member, almost all the members, councillors and MPs I know are decent thoughtful people wanting to do a good job (not all, but almost all), who worry regularly about what the right policies and political positions are, who generally lack the vast self confidence of those in the main parties, but nonetheless mean well.
You literally tried to Revoke the biggest vote in British history, and this is AFTER you all campaigned to get it reversed without ever enacting it in a "people's vote" - like the people didn/t vote the first time??

In weird ways, your party is the most disgusting of all. I hope it dies out
So do I, although I would put them above Britain First to be fair.

Meanwhile tax payers are quietly enraged, and very high taxpayers simply leave

This is the frog boiling of an entire nation and it will end with a reform government and then something worse if we don’t change course

Person A: "asylum seekers are being held in four star hotels"
Person B: "actually, no, when the governmemt leases them for asylum seekers, some of the facilities on which stars are awarded are shut down so technically it is no longer a four star hotel".

Why is it so difficult to see that while person B is not wrong on that point of detail, he is very much losing the argument.
I admire your persistence; I have given up

    Not really answered my question.

Will all Muslims naturally support Pakistan, they don’t in the case of Palestine.

This is why I think the rest of the world are going to try and ignore this conflict. It's a complicated border dispute with no real moral argument one way or the other.

There was that little window (a couple of hours?) where it looked like Amazon were going to put the tariffs as an explicit line on peoples' bills, and some got excited. It only lasted a couple of hours before he fell back into line.

I think the inevitable consequence of the India trade agreement is a new airport in Mirpur

As proposed by MPs, many of whom vehemently oppose a third runway at Heathrow to ‘save the planet’ 😂

    Not really answered my question.

Will all Muslims naturally support Pakistan, they don’t in the case of Palestine.

As far as I am concerned, Kashmir (give or take some Hindu-majority border areas) should really have gone to Pakistan in 1947. But that's just me.
I think it pretty certain that Kashmir would vote to join Pakistan, which is why India won't hold one.

And that's not a new problem, and it's not unique to the right. (As I've mentioned before, my formative practical politics was against a Liberal councillor in south Hampshire who pulled different versions of the same levers.)

What is different now is that more people get their "news" from individually calibrated algorithms, and those algorithms are optimised on engagement, which tends to mean inducing anger. It's not a new problem, but it's much worse than it used to be.

It's not dishonest. The issue you are picking up on changes the substance of what is being said so little it is almost irrelevant.
    As a conparison:
Person A: I'm going to Manchester to watch football. Manchester United are my favourite team I'm really looking forward to watching them play at their home ground.
Person B: Manchester United play their home matches at Old Trafford, which is outside the city of Manchester. You are being dishonest.

You see how person B is technically correct and yet the detail he is picking up on is fundamentally unimportant to the point person A is making? We engage in massive nitpickery online, but noone in the real world would accuse person A of lying.

Person A: "asylum seekers are being held in four star hotels"
Person B: "actually, no, when the governmemt leases them for asylum seekers, some of the facilities on which stars are awarded are shut down so technically it is no longer a four star hotel".

Why is it so difficult to see that while person B is not wrong on that point of detail, he is very much losing the argument.

You also seen to have completely missed my very simple point.

Nobody is trying to persuade Leon that asylum seekers are great.

They are engaged in the utterly futile endeavor of trying to get him to occasionally post something that isn't dishonest.

True, but I don't think that's the best analogy.

To stay in Manchester, I'd say it's a bit like being invited to the Manchester City stadium and being taken to Maine Road. Yes, it used to be the stadium, Maine Road itself is still in the same place, but it's really not the same thing any more.

But that's no good in terms of practical politics, because explaining=losing. What should happen is that long-term bullshitters get shunned...

If Countries want to trade with the US, they need to send baubles to the Mad King.
Like I said, send him gold. He likes gold.

TWO FRONT WAR FOR ME - Both my neighbours are Muslim. Such is life!
Why ? Are they of Pakistani heritage ? The war is India v Pakistan not India v Islam.
How did modern Pakistan and India come about?
    Mountbatten’s utter stupidity.
Highly debatable. The idea for a Pakistan had well established itself before Mountbatten was appointed.

Do you know who was a big fan of creating a Pakistan? Churchill.
I thought Churchill was an Islamophobe?

But Leon is lying. This isn’t nitpicking. Asylum seekers are not housed in 4-star hotels. They are sometimes housed in what used to be 4-star hotels.

It’s like saying that Leon had sex with a 14-year old prostitute. He responds that she was of age, and the first person then says, “But she used to be 14.” It’s the same logic.

Happy days for the lads from India and Pakistan rocking up in small boats. They can say that they are fleeing a war zone.

Well everybody dealt with the war in Gaza calmly and politely, so presumably this'll be the same. ☹️

OK let's take literally my last post, about the Lib Dems

"You literally tried to Revoke the biggest vote in British history, and this is AFTER you all campaigned to get it reversed without ever enacting it in a "people's vote" - like the people didn't vote the first time??"

    What is the dishonesty there?
You fail to clearly define what you mean, so it's hard to say.

But if you did manage to make a post that wasn't dishonest - congratulations! Maybe Mexicanpete's ticking off is working!

Because you pretend to not understand how a Parliamentary democracy works. The Lib Dems did not stand in the 2015 General Election promising a referendum on Brexit. Their MPs were elected in the full knowledge that they opposed leaving the EU. During the various Parliamentary votes on Brexit the Lib Dem MPs were doing precisely what they were elected to do. They then put revoke into their 2019 manifesto to submit it for judgement by the electorate. To use your random capitals, THAT'S HOW OUR SYSTEM IS SUPPOSED TO WORK.
