2/3 of the electorate want to restore the death penalty. I'm not sure that reconciles with your view of where the centre of political gravity is.
The majority view is only important when it’s something someone supports.
2/3 is of course a completely made up statistic. The most recent survey, taken days after the sentencing of Axel Rudakabana, had it rising from 50-55% for “the most serious terrorism offences”.
Then ask the same group of people if they think Lucy Letby should have been killed by the state.
The YouGov tracker is currently 60% support and 31% oppose for cases of multiple murder.
So not only have you cherrypicked the highest score for any of the questions, for the pollster with the highest death penalty scores, but even that one at its recent peak is some way off 2/3.
Do you want to bring back the death penalty? If so, is there a particular reason you trust the state to get it right every time?
The USA have executed people later found to have been innocent . The death penalty lobby ignore this.
And people have been released from prison and then committed murder, sometimes on the same day.

The cut at the start is making me suspicious. But all foreign nationals?
In theory, compulsory registration applies in lots of European countries too.
Asking for a friend - but if you'd been invited to give a talk at a US conference, filled in the paperwork, had appropriate visa's etc, you'd need to additionally do this too? Or face jail-time? Because you missed a tweet?
Net -26 subscribers in 4 hours. With some of them it’s like the scene in Downfall where the Nazis hear that Hilter is dead and immediately shoot themselves
I see one has served divorce papers
(Still really rather liking the Model Y Performance I got Mrs Saurus as our family car the other week; fwiw reaction from neighbours/strangers in as much as any give a stuff has been to want a go. Although I made my mum ill with 0-60 which is odd when she was a biker in her yoof)
I complain about what I call the nuclear arms race of power outputs. Previously unheard of levels of power pit on family cars.
And then I test cars with less power and soft suspension. And want the power back again. I only have the AWD with the acceleration boost. That’s already utterly crazy. Have you driven a 3 performs? Crackers
Nah, I'm trying to wangle my way onto test driving a plaid of some sort. TBH if they brought out a new model with plaid like performance I'd just buy it. Paid off mortgage earlier in year, what else is there to buy? We're simple people with simple tastes.

Oh do give over. I know you’re trolling, but name me some examples of the “directly culpable” innocent deaths that are equally considered, deliberate and cold blooded as a state execution.
There is of course one country that positively revels in that sort of calculated killing of innocents despite officially having a moratorium on the death penalty, and that’s your mates in Moscow.

Those people not having been in prison for murder. So the implication is the state should just go the whole Saudi hog and hang anyone who might commit murder in the future, or have whole life sentences for anyone in that category.
at the President's Cabinet meeting: "One of the most important things you'll achieve in your presidency is re-ordering the world in a proper way. I despise Gove but if we are to have a House of Lords which includes ex-politicians he clearly meets the criteria for it. He was a significant figure in government for 13 years and for good or ill (principally ill, it has to be said) made major changes that will probably reverberate through politics for decades.
That is one very good argument for getting rid of the Lords, but until that happens I can't see how anyone can say he shouldn't be considered for a peerage.
Yesterday I returned two shirts to M&S as they didn't fit. They said they would normally refund, but as I didn't have the receipt they had to give me a credit note. Fair enough, my fault
When I got home, the receipt was right there on my desk... so I went back today, presented both receipt and credit note, and politely asked for my money back... but they wouldn't have it, I must say it annoyed me, I would definitely have refunded the customer if I worked at a big store like that.

The argument against the death penalty that it is statistically inevitable that innocent people will be killed applies to all sorts of other aspects of public policy. The people stabbed to death in a Reading park by a failed asylum seeker would be alive today if the state had deported him, for example.
If Reform win control of the councils they’re predicted to then it’s a different ball game for them.
They will have records to defend. It won’t just be about people online with pink hair, nose rings and they/them pronouns screaming fascist, like Rik from The Young Ones. They will have a record of either delivery or non delivery going into 2029. It will be fascinating to see if they can hold together as groups on these councils or not and the MSM will be all over them.
Indeed, good point. From previous history of the various interactions of Faragist parties/business opportunities they tend to fight like cats in a sack and constantly make embarrassing/mad or fascistic comments. Whatever happens Lab and the Tories are going to have a poor night for differing reasons - Lab are in government, but not offering any truly radical ideas, the real change that the public seems to want. They are rather meh in the public's eyes. The Tories are just all over the place, and Badenough is proving to be a hot mess at leadership, no unique voice or vision of what the party offers. On top of all that the public has not forgiven the party yet. The Lib Dems and Greens are likely to have a good night too.

Asking for a friend - but if you'd been invited to give a talk at a US conference, filled in the paperwork, had appropriate visa's etc, you'd need to additionally do this too? Or face jail-time? Because you missed a tweet?
if you got the right skin colour, religion and genitalia you should be fine

It's the same with immigration in the US:
Should illegal immigrants be deported?
Yes
Should illegal immigrants who have not been convicted of a crime and who file tax returns be deported?
No
I'd be wondering why illegal immigrants are in a position to file tax returns...
Bizarrely and you might be very surprised but many illegal immigrants choose to pay federal taxes.
Reuters reports that, after a meeting with Russian Envoy Dmitriev, Trump’s Envoy Witkoff told Trump that the fastest way to broker a ceasefire would be to give Russia 4 regions: Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk & Donetsk.
Ukraine still holds:

In total, more than 1 million people still live in the Ukrainian-controlled parts of these regions.
Before the invasion, the ethnic compositions of these regions was as follows:
- Kherson: 82% UA - 14% RU - Zaporizhzhia: 71% UA - 24.5% RU - Luhansk: 58% UA - 39% RU - Donetsk: 57% UA - 38% RU
In private discussions hours before China announced new retaliatory tariffs, the Trump administration warned Chinese officials against such a move, according to a source familiar with the discussions.
The Chinese were also told – once again – that Chinese President Xi Jinping should request a call with US President Donald Trump.
Instead, US officials woke up to news of increased Chinese tariffs and no request for a leader level call. Xi also made comments that only dug him in further. https://x.com/rwang07/status/1910692647519346832
The experience of using German military equipment in Ukraine turned out to be disappointing and "sobering up", according to a report by the deputy military attaché of Germany. The report, not intended for the public but presented at the Bundeswehr school in Delitzsch, was obtained by German media - NDR, WDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung. It examines in detail the use of military equipment supplied to Ukraine from Germany.
Here are the characteristics of some of the weapons that Berlin supplied to Kyiv: - Self-propelled howitzer PzH 2000 - "very high technical vulnerability", which "calls into question its suitability". - Tank Leopard 2A6 - very expensive to repair, and it is impossible to repair it at the front, largely due to attacking drones. - Tank Leopard 1A5 turned out to be "reliable", but due to weak armor it is often used only as an artillery mount. - The IRIS-T air defense system is effective, but its ammunition is very expensive. - The American Patriot missile defense system, which the Bundeswehr uses itself and supplied to Ukraine, is "excellent" but "unusable" because its carrier vehicle is too old and the manufacturer no longer supplies spare parts.
The report indicates that older models that are no longer used in the Bundeswehr or are considered obsolete have proven themselves much better. Among them are the Gepard anti-aircraft mount and the Marder infantry fighting vehicle. .. https://x.com/EuromaidanPR/status/1910652913648574788

I have good connections in China. I get a lot of business from there.*
If what they are saying to me is true, not only are they not backing down, but they are determined to smash Trump for his behaviour which Xi takes as a personal insult.
If it weren't for the fact that the world economy will suffer as a result, as of course will my business, it would be very amusing to watch two fat superannuated fascists knock lumps off each other.
Trump however doesn't seem to realise just how vulnerable he is. If China sells all US bonds, the resulting turmoil will be such he will probably end up being assassinated.
And that is what my sources think Xi's planning...
*Yes, I dislike and distrust the government of China. It may, in its own small way, one day help to create a better world.

30 years ago when Mrs Foxy and I lived in NZ I had a work permit but she didn't, so she worked illegally cash in hand. We didn't know how the NZ authorities communicated with each other so didn't pay tax in case it flagged us up to the authorities.
When you move into the underground economy these things accumulate.

So presumably the British public would be happy to hang Lucy Letby, one of the most prolific of recent convicted child murderers. Or would they?

Didnt he repeatedly promise to end the war in 1 day?

Oh, I agree. The Chinese have their own ways to negotiate and "face" is a significant factor. They aren't willing to kiss ass like Starmer.

Europe should align with China who now seems a much more reliable trade partner . I never thought I’d be saying that !
Zia Yusuf talked a very good talk about Reform in local Government - said they were already doing a lot of serious work involving FOI requests to suss out wasteful spending etc. That was before Rupert Lowe though, which has significantly knocked my confidence both in Reform and Yusuf.

He is completely surrounded by people who will only tell him what a great job he is doing
They are sleepwalking to disaster, which is a shame, but also exactly what they deserve
If you don't tell Trump what a good job he is doing - you don't have a job the following day as multiple people have discovered over the past 2 months.
But the idea that you can attack China and China won't retaliate is the stupidest thing I've seen in a very long time..

Europe should certainly not align with China. We'd leave ourselves horribly exposed when they decide to forcibly reunify Taiwan with the mainland. Europe's big enough to stand on its own, and work with other countries as and when it is useful to do so.
There's a much better chance of the Americans getting over the Trump disaster than there is of China becoming democratic over the next decade.

Willy will be along shortly to tell us that this is all part of the plan
“It’s a beautiful word, pivot. Reminds me of being on the golf course. They say I probably leave the most beautiful divots of any player. It’s the same with pivots.”
I really don’t think Trump has a clue what he’s got into.
He is completely surrounded by people who will only tell him what a great job he is doing
They are sleepwalking to disaster, which is a shame, but also exactly what they deserve
He's surrounded by people who had a plan to use tariffs to go after China and force the rest of the World to go to 0%, but didn't anticipate that other countries would respond differently to how they expected.
It doesn't alter the big picture though - the USA is the dominant source of investment liquidity and they are no longer interested in maintaining the safety of globalised trade: getting stuff will become harder and more dangerous for the rest of us. We will need to have more robust infrastructure and invest more in defence whether we like it or not.
It is good to see Cyclefree expanding her "Victory Orchard". That shows the kind of long term thinking we need, given the long term thinking of many of our enemies.
(Perhaps she could tell us the varieties she is planting, and which are doing the best.)

Yet Europe is also increasing defence spending for the first time in decades to contain Putin and Trump's economic war with China while getting closer to Russia has started to split Beijing from Moscow. See Xi's call for the EU to join them in higher tariffs on goods from the US
Starmer has to stop being a chicken shit simping for reform voters and instead start working for the people who voted for him: rejoiners. 🤷♂️ it is pretty bloody easy. Trump loathing rejoinerd are 2/3 of the electorate. Start doing politics to that reality. 🙄🙄🙄
2/3 certainly don't want to rejoin the EU with the Euro etc beyond LD and Green voters, at most a UK majority would be for rejoining EFTA now
"Britain is developing its own Minority Report-style crime prediction tool, according to investigators from privacy campaign group Statewatch. The project, commissioned by the Prime Minister’s Office under Rishi Sunak, collates demographic, health, and crime data to “review offender characteristics that increase the risk of committing homicide”.
Campaigners have called the project “chilling and dystopian”, while the Guardian worried that “the data used would build bias into the predictions against minority-ethnic and poor people”. But this use of “bias” in turn exposes the conflicting political constraints on policing in modern Britain: a predicament which points to the role our post-liberal governing technocracy perhaps hopes Big Data will play, in helping them avoid confronting such conflicts directly."
57% of British voters, support nationalising British steel. 37% of Labour voters, 36% of Reform voters, 33% of LDs and 28% of Conservative voters strongly support nationalising it

2/3 of the electorate want to restore the death penalty. I'm not sure that reconciles with your view of where the centre of political gravity is.
Yougov don't agree with your 2/3 figure. It's actually a bit contradictory.

It's the same with immigration in the US:
Should illegal immigrants be deported?
Yes
Should illegal immigrants who have not been convicted of a crime and who file tax returns be deported?
No
I'd be wondering why illegal immigrants are in a position to file tax returns...
Many people file US tax returns, not all of them are even US residents (legal or otherwise).
Starmer has to stop being a chicken shit simping for reform voters and instead start working for the people who voted for him: rejoiners. 🤷♂️ it is pretty bloody easy. Trump loathing rejoiners are 2/3 of the electorate. Start doing politics to that reality. 🙄🙄🙄
People have been released by the police without being charged who have gone on tocommit crimes, too.
If only they'd been executed upon arrest, the world would be a safer place.
So that’s who JD Vance aspires to be… Judge Dredd… it all make sense now..

Um hold on, I though the consistent complaint from Unherd was that our governing technocracy was "hyper-liberal", not "post-liberal": the two phrases mean different things?
Starmer has to stop being a chicken shit simping for reform voters and instead start working for the people who voted for him: rejoiners. 🤷♂️ it is pretty bloody easy. Trump loathing rejoiners are 2/3 of the electorate. Start doing politics to that reality. 🙄🙄🙄
2/3 of the electorate want to restore the death penalty. I'm not sure that reconciles with your view of where the centre of political gravity is.
Yougov don't agree with your 2/3 figure. It's actually a bit contradictory.
"Britons don’t tend to support the death penalty… until you name the worst crimes
Our survey shows that four in 10 (40%) Britons support the death penalty, with half (50%) opposed and 10% unsure.
...
However, when asked about the death penalty for specific crimes, Britons are more likely than not to support for death penalty for the murder of a child, murders committed as part of a terrorist act and cases of multiple murder. They do not, however, support the death penalty being applied to all cases of murder."
It's the same with immigration in the US:
Should illegal immigrants be deported?
Yes
Should illegal immigrants who have not been convicted of a crime and who file tax returns be deported?
No
If I were in your shoes, I'd be reviewing my options on where to live tbh.

The correct take on this story is that it's a non story, which achieved prominence only because the Guardisn failed to fact check the basis of the pressure group's somewhat outlandish claims.
The limited research project was specifically not intended to feed directly into policing policy in the first place.

Reparations. In return for the US supporting the surrender of territory to Russia.
"Repay" isn't the right word, as that aid wasn't a loan.
New terms of the minerals deal: ▪️Ukraine must repay the US billions in military and financial aid it received after Russia’s major invasion three years ago; ▪️Ukraine must pay half of its profits from natural resource development to a fund controlled by the US; ▪️The US demands that all profits from the fund be taken away until Ukraine returns all aid it received during the war + 4% per annum; ▪️No word on security guarantees for Ukraine... https://x.com/front_ukrainian/status/1910726498400477425
Why would you spend a fortune to attend college in the US, with the risk if random deportation ?
Over 650 (and rising) known cases so far. Most have nothing to do with advocacy. The admin seems to be engaged in a breakneck effort to kick out every foreign student who has had even the most minor interaction with the police possible, including for TRAFFIC CITATIONS and JAYWALKING tickets https://x.com/ReichlinMelnick/status/1910684238283747623
Reported numbers still rising.
one of the most awful examples is a woman who was arrested for breaking the nose of a guy who was trying to rape her. the cops said she was obviously the victim, she was never charged, but because she has the arrest on her record she’s being deported https://x.com/ArmandDoma/status/1910746878167441695

Have we picked up on this fact and allowed our universities to take foreign students again are or we the idiots I think we are.
Gove was and is a very powerful journalist. His peccadillos are well known but not generally reported. He "has" plenty on other journalists and former political colleagues. He is also "close" to his proprietor, Murdoch. "Thanks for the peerage, Rishi, it came out of the blue". This is not the way our Parliamentarians should get their jobs.

How stupid is Trump and his advisors?
You don’t insult China and think they will come back - they will accept any pain inflicted and plan retaliation (the tariff rates aren’t Trump’s issue here, remember who owns Government bonds).
What is Ukraine getting from. This deal. Given that it’s less than zero why would they accept when the EU is willing to continue to support them.
The irony here is that Trump has screwed up the price of oil - so one of the few things propping up the Russian economy (selling oil cheap to customers willing to sup with the devil) is no currently not possible

Europe should align with China who now seems a much more reliable trade partner . I never thought I’d be saying that !
It's possible, however we have new experience of the fragile democracy in the USA, and it is very unlikely to return to stays quo ante. That puts us in a new place, and Mr Trump has demonstrated it for all to see.
One deep problem I note even amongst Trump critics (eg Michael Popok on the Meidas Touch Legal AF Channel) is an underlying naivete eg a persisting belief in the USA as "the best democracy in the world" and "the best country in the world".
Well no, it isn't. It's an 18C mess in many respects, which has shown itself to be open to manipulation and over throw. And where the Executive have over a period of decades been able to expand their scope with no effective push back - eg expanded use of "War" powers by Presidents going back to probably Clinton, Bush or even Reagan to launch wars without effective oversight.
We (that is, the club of developed democracies that we have discussed but initially for us mainly Europe / former NATO area) need a new positioning which can stand despite the USA and despite China. The two items are to deal with Putin's war without Trump/USA looting Ukraine, and to counter USA dependence and the broader Russian threat to Europe.

When I got home, the receipt was right there on my desk... so I went back today, presented both receipt and credit note, and politely asked for my money back... but they wouldn't have it, I must say it annoyed me, I would definitely have refunded the customer if I worked at a big store like that.
BREAKING:
Reuters reports that, after a meeting with Russian Envoy Dmitriev, Trump’s Envoy Witkoff told Trump that the fastest way to broker a ceasefire would be to give Russia 4 regions: Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk & Donetsk.
Ukraine still holds:
- 42% of Kherson (ca. 300 000 people)
- 40% of Donetsk (ca. 200 000 ppl)
- 30% of Zaporizhzhia (ca. 600 000 ppl)
- 2% of Luhansk (ca. 1000 ppl)
In total, more than 1 million people still live in the Ukrainian-controlled parts of these regions.
Before the invasion, the ethnic compositions of these regions was as follows:
- Kherson: 82% UA - 14% RU
- Zaporizhzhia: 71% UA - 24.5% RU

The experience of using German military equipment in Ukraine turned out to be disappointing and "sobering up", according to a report by the deputy military attaché of Germany. The report, not intended for the public but presented at the Bundeswehr school in Delitzsch, was obtained by German media - NDR, WDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung. It examines in detail the use of military equipment supplied to Ukraine from Germany.
Here are the characteristics of some of the weapons that Berlin supplied to Kyiv:
- Self-propelled howitzer PzH 2000 - "very high technical vulnerability", which "calls into question its suitability".
Among them are the Gepard anti-aircraft mount and the Marder infantry fighting vehicle. ..

For decades Putin’s Kremlin has fantasised about two things - destroying NATO and ending the primacy of the US dollar. After only 10 weeks back in office Trump is well on the way to delivering both these things. And congressional Republicans, who used to guarantee them, are too cowardly to stop him.
