I was just informed that two repatriation flights from the United States, with a large number of Illegal Criminals, were not allowed to land in Colombia. This order was given by Colombia's Socialist President Gustavo Petro, who is already very unpopular amongst his people. Petro's denial of these flights has jeopardized the National Security and Public Safety of the United States, so I have directed my Administration to immediately take the following urgent and decisive retaliatory measures:

-Emergency 25% tariffs on all goods coming into the United States. In one week, the 25% tariffs will be raised to 50%.

-A Travel Ban and immediate Visa Revocations on the Colombian Government Officials, and all Allies and Supporters.

-Visa Sanctions on all Party Members, Family Members, and Supporters of the Colombian Government.

-Enhanced Customs and Border Protection Inspections of all Colombian Nationals and Cargo on national security grounds.

-IEEPA Treasury, Banking and Financial Sanctions to be fully imposed.

These measures are just the beginning. We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the Criminals they forced into the United States!

Christ, he doesn't fuck around, does he?
That's why he got the votes.

It'd be like the Tories or Reform actually doing something, here.
Only the predominant source of net migration to the UK is regular (a large chunk of which helps to keep the listing health and social care sectors just about afloat,) and starting a trade war with the European Union to try to force the French to take the boat people back would be unlikely to end well.

    Why?

I'd argue it's fairly irrelevant unless you want to make something else out of it. Which, of course, you never would.

If natural via wet market, or lab-leak, the important thing is to ensure it never happens again. Brainlessly going on about one of the possibilities means that the other one get ignored. And it is not as though pandemics have ever started naturally before, is it?
Seriously? It's "fairly irrelevant" if this global pandemic was caused by dangerous science?

    Really unnecessary.

@JosiasJessop and I have our disagreements. I don't think he particularly likes me but he is civil and I hope I am the same back. Some of his posts I agree with. Why is that effective? Because it’s economical, it scans, it’s got rhythm and punch, and it feels fresh. And ALSO - importantly - it tells a truth, with a dash of hyperbole. We all love @JosiasJessop but he’s not one of the site’s intellectual titans, is he? Indeed he’d be the first to admit that, in his simple, affable, good natured provincial way. I don't lay into people BTL here. If I did, I can assure you I'd make @moonshine look like a rank amateur.

It makes PB and social media generally incredibly tedious.

Still I enjoy you using 7 (SEVEN) paragraphs to analyse 16 words. And you accuse me of being prolix ....
Moonshine certainly is a rank amateur, although his burn of JJ was a classic, when compared to Ishmael who could be bludgeon or rapier dependent on the ABV of his blood at the time.
A comment that says more about you than it does about me. ;)
Not really, and when people like myself, Gin, Kyf or any of the others who were on the receiving end of Ishmaels invective, which could be rather barbed, where were people like you exactly to object to it ? Keeping your heads down in case he had a go at you, no doubt.

    I rather miss Ishmael.

He may have been abusive but he had class with it.

Moonshines barb at you was uncalled for and unfair but was witty. Your response was just rude and unsophisticated.
No, Ishmael was a bully. He got deeply personal and made unfounded accusations against others, that drove several off the board.

The site is well shot of him.
Mate, I was on the receiving end from him far worse than most people he locked horns with. For no good reason either.

He made crude comments about my relationship with my wife more than once, our lovemaking activities are no one’s concern but ours, and accused me of wishing to orally attend to Leon more than once. 🤮

I have more reasons to dislike him than most.

However in his final incarnation he seemed to have calmed down and was capable of rapier like wit.
He was a repeatedly deeply unpleasant bully to me. I left the site for a a few months because of it.

He seems to have stopped posting as Mercator and not posted since, it seems, under any alias.
I keep in touch with him by email for certain reasons. He’s on good form and travelling a lot.

I can see why he could upset but he actually is a very genuinely nice, warm, intelligent individual in real life. It probably doesn’t feel like it but it’s as much the cut and thrust on here rather than any personal animosity.

    I’m not his mum btw.
The Internet can bring out the worst in people, perhaps including myself at times. There are few of the nuances you get when talking irl: the smiles, the slightly jokey laugh, the frown that shows you have gone a bit too far.

That's one reason I use smileys; but some/many people don't like them.

I'm intrigued that many of the people who get done for saying some awful things online seem perfectly ordinary irl. A bit like some football hooligans having good jobs...
No smiley on this needless shitty dig. ‘But if you think that burn was a 'classic', then you've obviously not progressed past year two in primary school.’

As for so called hooligans I have known a few and even worked for one, he was a finance manager in a medium sized engineering company supplying car parts.

They do it because they like a ruck, it’s an outlet for that side of them. And why not if they are not bothering people who are not interested in that.

I’m going to have a great thick slice of Thin Lizzy and say ‘if the boys want to fight you better let em’
I dunno. People complain when I use smileys; people complain when I don't. It's almost as though some people look for reasons to snipe at posters they don't like... ;)
Indeed, as you proved with that dig at me for no good reason. Yet you act all butthurt and play the victim when you receive a minor doing back. 🤷‍♂️

    I’m getting the word……..hypocrite.

Oh and your use of smileys is something I care nothing about and have never offered an opinion on.
".. that dig at me for no good reason."

Before that, you said: "although his burn of JJ was a classic" ...

So you acted all butthurt and played the victim when you received a minor doing back... :)

I left this site after you described all trans women as 'mutilated men', which would include my partner.

What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

Done with this place - but please get off your high horse, you dish it out as much as anyone else.
Ahem - you were gleefully posting abuse at me (including your despicable refusal to display any sort of empathy with female rape victims put at risk by men in rape crisis centres) while I was still here and again about me in my absence long after I left this site earlier last year and stating your hope that I would not return. So to be accurate I left first and in part because of you.

And today is the first I have ever heard anything about your partner. All transwomen remain of the male sex. Not all have surgery of course. The majority of trans identified males do not have surgery. And that all trans identified males (without a GRC) remain of the male sex is the official position of the Scottish government, as it expressly made clear during its arguments to the Supreme Court in November on the precise question of what the consequences of a GRC are. According to the Scottish government transwomen (without a GRC) are men - not women. I must have missed it being accused of transphobia by the usual suspects.

That this is the complete opposite of what the Scottish government has previously said in Holyrood and elsewhere and what many of their supporters believe and repeat at every turn is one of the many bizarre aspects of this issue. But maybe the SC judgment will clear this up. Or maybe not.

The funny thing is, I absolutely agree with you on pretty much everything else you post - including and especially male violence against women. Your post on Afghanistan earlier this month was the sort of thing I want to stand up and applaud. I couldn't agree more with everything else you write. All of it.

I just happen to believe trans women are women, something of which I have more experience of than you. That includes the amount of transphobia, discrimination, and other things I've encountered IRL. Trans people just want to live their lives without the hatred they are subjected to by the likes of people like you on a daily basis.

I'm far from an absolutist - for example, I'm against self-ID and trans women in sports. Which places me outside the 'radical' trans orthodoxy, for example. The irony is that seeing the amount of discrimination my partner faced, the sexism she was subjected to, the objectification, and worse - occasional violence she was subjected to - turned me from being a 'lads mags era bloke' into something of an ardent feminist. She is, was, and always will be, a better, kinder, more decent human being - and more of a woman than you will ever be.

I genuinely miss posting here, and have had a lot of fun over the years. But your comments were beyond rude and offensive. Imagine trying to debate homosexuality with someone who calls all gay people f*****s. That's what debating with you is like. Others who I've disagreed with - Carlotta for example - are at least civil, and i can respect that. You show no such compunction.

While I have disagreed with others here on the trans debate (for reasons that should be patently obvious, I have talked about having a "trans loved one" in my life many times over the debate) you are the only one whose comments have been completely beyond the pale. The misgendering and 'mutilated man' stuff. No thanks.

If PB is a pub, I don't want my local to be the kind of place where I pop in for a couple of pints to find people either slagging off my wife or, in your case, denying her right to even exist.

Your posts have repeatedly dripped with hatred and contempt of trans people, which includes someone I love dearly. Again, to use the pub analogy, don't expect me to be polite to you when you come in here repeatedly slagging off my Mrs.

Anyway, enjoy your website - it's all yours now.

Watch as they all do this. The last virologists pretending it came from the market will quietly pretend they were “skeptical” all along

I know that this subject obsesses you. Can you understand how most of us are so deeply bored of Covid that we don't care either way? It happened. It was shit. Move on. You think we can keep digging away at this and find named culprits? Individuals who can be brought to justice for Covid?

We have enough of today's problems to deal with than to worry about all that. Even your AI obsession is more relevant than Covid.
The real controversy is our response to COVID, which Leon never goes near of course..🤨😏
This is bollocks, I have been quite forceful in saying the later lockdowns were a disaster, and they were

And masking has been terrible for many societies, eg Japan, Korea - I explicitly said that on my recent visit to Japan and Korea

But the ORIGIN of Covid ALSO matters

FFS this site gets massively exercised by the Post Office subpostmasters scandal. And that was, indeed, a scandal. But Covid dwarves it by seventy eight orders of magnitude. MILLIONS died because of out-of-control science in badly run labs

Bad as she is Paula Vennels is not quite in that league
"But the ORIGIN of Covid ALSO matters"

    I mean, lol. Stupefying
Often I come to the site and feel intellectually enriched. And other times, JossiasJessop is here.
    Really unnecessary.

@JosiasJessop and I have our disagreements. I don't think he particularly likes me but he is civil and I hope I am the same back. Some of his posts I agree with. No-one is right all the time and no-one agrees with others all the time. Abuse does nothing for this site, frankly. Rather detracts from it.
    Oh give over

We lay into each other all the time. We’d all die of pious boredom otherwise. @moonshine put the boot in with skill. His insult is deft, not randomly nasty, it’s the OPPOSITE of pointless abuse

    Parse it

“Often I come to the site and feel intellectually enriched. And other times, @JossiasJessop is here”

He IS self aware, even if he’s really not very bright

It would be like me saying

“Often I come to the site looking for pithy and concise headers. And other times, @Cyclefree is the writer”

Which you've said ad nauseam over the years.

I wasn’t even addressing you or being rude about you or to you. Your dig was needless and personally abusive. It’s hardly ‘butthurt’, whatever that means, to point it out and point out your hypocrisy. You seem to make a habit of baiting and attacking people then playing the victim. This is what I said.

‘ Moonshine certainly is a rank amateur, although his burn of JJ was a classic, when compared to Ishmael who could be bludgeon or rapier dependent on the ABV of his blood at the time.’

It's going to come as a surprise to Drosten that he's seen the light as he still thinks a natural origin is the most likely.

You say 'For years he's been adamant...'

And yet he doesn't seem to have changed his position since February 2022:

He IS self aware, even if he’s really not very bright

It would be like me saying

“Often I come to the site looking for pithy and concise headers. And other times, @Cyclefree is the writer”

Which you've said ad nauseam over the years.

And I said in return was that it was hardly a classic. But I daresay you can see why LOLing at the 'burn' of someone else is not exactly 'not addressing' them. Or indeed, it could be perceived as being rude.

As for baiting, that could be seen as being the intent of your original post...
As I was not addressing you and didn’t even tag you it clearly wasn’t. There was no LOL either.

Your response was disproportionate. Trying to get you to see it. You can’t. You seem to get into a lot of these scrapes where others don’t. Tells me where the problem is, I suspect you’re on the spectrum. Done here on this.
So who was the 'JJ' you were referring to? Another JJ who had suffered an (apparent) burn? No?

The idea that you were not referring to me, and that I had no right to respond, is silly.

Thank you for your contribution. It was valued. :)
  • Someone on the previous thread made the jibe that the average farming income is £22k. They did not mention that that is for a 70 hour week with NO paid holidays - you have to pay someone to cover if you go away. By the standards of being on call as per Local Goverment it is a 168 hours on call business. Even when I was in NZ I was covering for some business in the UK, such as the VAT balance sheets as I remember and balancing the Higher Level Stewardship, Upper Entry Level Stewardship, Sustainable Farming Incentive for a whole fell.

You don't have the option of doing what you want - I could build 20 houses and my IHT issues are solved as would be my successors. Oh, but you can't do that, people would want to live in them and they would spoil the view.
