Well, he was good on the end of crosses.
When Islam Slimani played Centre Forward and Christian Fuchs played Left Fullback for Leicester we hoped for the headline "Christian crosses, Islam converts!"

    Sadly it never happened.

This is a side issue to Cyclefree’s well made point but the reason these men were not given prison sentences is abundantly clear: the prisons are full to bursting with people who the state views as a greater threat to public safety, or otherwise in greater need of imprisonment.

Possession of child abuse imagery is a heinous crime but, while the prisons are full, almost no one is going to go to prison for possession alone.
Huw Edwards lost his job but also got a suspended sentence due to his guilty plea and being a first time offender
I think that as somebody so high profile he should have been punished harder

Why miss such a golden opportunity to set an example?

If hanging them counts as a suspended sentence.

Strange - I really don't know why he generates such, well, dislike from a certain section of the public. He was a very good footballer who played well for his country.

He does well on tv - I can only imagine it must be his politics and the fact he isn't a Conservative which seems to irritate, well, Conservatives.

    On the subject.

I am minor helper in a charity that does a lot of work with young people.

We carefully follow all the rules of safeguarding. And, more importantly, the intent of the rules. We have yearly audits and ask for advice on how to improve. We have anonymous reporting for incidents - I helped set up a thing with QR codes so that anyone with a smart phone can go, in one click, to an anonymised form to report *anything*. That's in addition to paper message boxes, email, text number etc etc. All posted up and pointed out to the kids.

All the employees and helpers receive training on this.

And we strive to do more.

Hey, but what's 40 years of gun decking reports, when it's about being a Safe Pair of Hands, a Team Player......

Do you know what's really depressing?

That's not only a much more advanced system than in the CofE, but much more advanced and better run than the system used by OFSTED, who are supposed to be the arbiters of good practice in child protection.

We talk a lot about safeguarding in this country but we're really, really bad at it.
I don't think my charity is bad at it, or most of the ones I know of.

That's because we think that safeguarding children is part of the work of a children's charity.

And everyone has an attitude of "Don't let it slide" - mostly that's to do with safety (boats, water and kids....) but it applies to everything. Tighten all the bolts to the correct torque. Log any damage accurately - get it repaired.....

November is for testing the different options so that in December you can make sure you have only the best.
Any time after Halloween its acceptable to have Christmas things.

Which somewhat by definition includes all of November.
After bonfire night it’s vaguely acceptable, not Halloween.

I prefer Christmas to start from the 16th, after my birthday.
It’s a battle that’s already lost but I kinda like Dec 1st as the start of Christmas. That said we are moving to a world where the winter events merge seamlessly. Halloween into bonfire night, through poppy mass and into the big one. People like dressing up houses and nice lights. Do it if it makes you happy.
In the USA they need to mark Thanksgiving first, so Christmas starts a little later.
Well, kinda, but Thanksgiving seems to be exactly the same as Christmas, minus the guy in red, and without the earworms. A dress rehearsal, perhaps.

    It's quite different.

No presents, not really commercialised, more of an event and meal for family and friends. A lot of travel is involved, but it's unusual in a country with generally little holiday to have a four day holiday. Boxing Day is not a holiday in the USA.

It's a rather nice family event, and one my family kept for some years after our return from America, until our family dispersed.

I chose cash payout (but ELSP obv). Had I known how things would turn out, then I wouldn't have done but I still think was correct choice at the time. OTOH the forced HODL seems to have worked out in my favour as I'd have dumped immediately so long as he liquidates promptly (at least one sale seems to have happened, possibly two - but it's unclear how much he needs to sell).

Currently we are extended till Oct 2025 but at current rates of sale will be done before then, it's very unclear when before then though due to uncertainty about amount he needs to sell.

As the law is supposed to apply the same sentence to everyone, no less for higher status individuals but no more either
Except circumstances do mean that people get punished more than others for the same crimes sometimes, and yet is perfectly fair. A harsher sentence for Huw need not mean disproportionately harsh either.

MOTD analysis is not interesting. Its terrible. Its outdated. Its often totally wrong. Its like Sky cricket was before they had a massive overhaul. This chummy club that is all very pleasant but they are way too comfortable and really not up with things.

There is a limited shelf life for an ex-pro, unless they are willing to really keep up to date with the progression of any professional sport.

It's still a good highlights programme, with interesting analysis. Not that there have been many highlights for my team this season.
The problem is that highlights programmes are dime a dozen nowadays.

I can decide I want to get any games highlights put it into Google or YouTube or many other search engines and find a plethora of highlights packages - without waiting for obsolete linear programming.

So what's the point in the obsolete tech today? Is there any wonder people aren't bothered by it anymore?

Thanks for the article. The funny thing is, like the Post Office scandal, Private Eye have covered Welby/Smyth for years without anyone getting hot under the collar on the topic.

I know Private Eye can get it wrong (MMR and autism a notable screw up), but surely if you were a high-up and you saw some of the stories wouldn’t you go: “hang on is there something in this? Shouldn’t we have someone kick the tyres on this before it all blows up in our face”

No, because there is an odd rule in public life that even though they all read Private Eye assiduously in order to find out what is going on, nothing Private Eye covers counts as being public knowledge until years later when the BBC, ITV, Mail, Guardian etc cover the stuff from Private Eye they have known about for years. Funny old world.
It can be very strange when a scandal kicks off, and a lot of the evidence behind it is things that were publicly reported possibly even in major publications at the time. So you'll get something like "A scandal erupted in 2020, when news stories emerged about comments made in 2014 which were reported in NewsPaper A".

Football focus had an overhaul, less about the football, more yuff focused, more about lifestyle, much more focus on stories relating to causes that BBC worldview see as super important etc....and they lost 1/3 of their viewers.

I bet they include in MOTD "show", live matches like FA Cup, Euros, etc....not just the Saturday night highlight shows. And even if it is just highlights, it definitely includes Euros / WC, which you can only watch on BBC or ITV (and ITV is f##king awful).

If all you want is 4-5 min package showing you major highlights of a match, Sky YouTube has them about 1hr after final whistle. TNT increasing put extended highlights and full re-runs for lots of sports on their YouTube channel.

I watch MOTD. The extended highlights are much better than what you get on YouTube and I like that if there is a mad game at the bottom you watch that first. Gets you out of the Man City/Liverpool/Arsenal bubble.

I do some quick chores during the "analysis".

What I mean is it is SHOULD be limited. Players are the most insightful and interesting those few years after they finished. They know all the players, they know the tactics, they know the game being played today. To keep abreast with this requires a lot of work.

Or he could point to the very many men in recent months found guilty of having photos of child abuse – many thousands of them, many of the worst kind – who got suspended sentences and walked free from court, in some cases because imprisonment might have put their jobs at risk. And they were also Very Sorry. Of course they were.

As the law is supposed to apply the same sentence to everyone, no less for higher status individuals but no more either
Except circumstances do mean that people get punished more than others for the same crimes sometimes, and yet is perfectly fair. A harsher sentence for Huw need not mean disproportionately harsh either.
Huw was guilty of possession, so he had to get less than the guy who was guilty of distribution, which is obviously more serious.

Kate Abdo (Scott) is the best presenter of footy at the moment.

The problem with the analysts there is this belief they have to be an ex-player. But in cricket, they have realised they should have the CricViz guys, rugby a YouTube bod is increasingly getting work on telly, because the pros have actually turned around and said wow, that bloke, that bloke insights are spot on / I never thought about it like that.

Original Tifo football analyst, Alister Stuart son, now gets paid a fortune as a tactical consultant. The replacements are still interesting albeit since NYT took over change of direction. StatsBomb founder recently got bought out and now podcasts.

Being a pundit is a good way to not have a limited shelflife, many get years or decades out of it as Linekar demonstrates. It's just there are limited slots available.
What I mean is it is SHOULD be limited. Players are the most insightful and interesting those few years after they finished. They know all the players, they know the tactics, they know the game being played today. To keep abreast with this requires a lot of work.

The problem is we still have people like Roy Keane as a pundit, basically shows up, goes f##kin kick em, that's what I would have done. They don't show any heart these days.....

Sky had the same problem with the cricketers, Botham and Holding, basically going well I would have bowled an over of bouncers at em....Ian, Ian, you aren't allowed to even bowl a traditional bouncer in T20....
I think you are on the money for limited overs cricket, but test cricket has changed rather less. The better analysts keep up with modern trends while those such as Botham etc tended to rely on being superstar players.
I totally disagree. BazBall waves.....Jarrod Kimber is constantly showing with data just how much test cricket has changed.

    Literally is video today,

How batting has changed (in test cricket)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ISJU_gBDOI

Sky decision to throw out all the oldies and get in people like Kumar Sangakkara in was a brilliant decision. Not only a great of the game, his insights are fantastic in no short part that still very much part of the elite coaching side of things. He regularly points out known flaws in players technique as he knows all about them, seen them play close up.

And to be fair we’ve imported Black Friday without the actual reason for having it, so maybe we should import Thanksgiving too? Would nicely fill the gap…
Nor, it would seem, any idea of which day it actually is, judging by the number of sales now on.

33 million viewed at least one Match of the Day Show a season and 150 million watched a Match of the Day social media or website clip
    https://www.bbc.com/mediacentre/2024/match-of-the-day-celebrates-60-years
150 million out of the UK's 68 million people watched the show did they?

Utterly meaningless numbers, even setting aside the fact the same 'brand' is slapped onto live England games they have the unique rights to as the highlights package.

MotD was a staple pre-internet. Time has moved on now though.
Funny how every stat that you don't agree with on PB is fabricated or meaningless.

I'm always surprised about how many people still watch TV, and how influential News at 10 still is. Something PBers shouldn't forget when it comes to nascent political scandals, narratives.

Younger people (like me) have largely abandoned it, but we don't vote as much as the TV-watching oldies.
Not that funny, there's a whole plethora of bullshit stats out there. Lies, damned lies and statistics is a saying from over a century before I was even born - so if you find it "funny" it says more about you than me.

And with the advent of the internet the rise of spurious and meaningless data has reached levels Disraeli could never have imagined.
Could you provide some evidence to support that claim?

Without looking (just don’t have the free time, sorry) I’d bring up accessing new shots (ramp, reverse sweep etc) to attempt to change fields and where bowlers bowl. I’d argue that bowling remains very similar. The only revolution in bowling I can think of is reverse swing, and that originates in the late 80’s and early 90’s. We have seen funky fields come in too, and I think that’s partly instinct from players like Stokes but also analysis coming in.

Sounds rather typical for how Parliament works generally.

Either a private bill with limited debate or a three line whipped government bill with it - this being not whipped seems like a better option.

All you need is the final paragraph:

Here’s hoping that federal funding will be allocated to scientific research that will answer open questions on national security and extraterrestrials. We owe the answers on both fronts to the public.

    Quick skim doesn't seem to say any more than "There's no evidence, but wouldn't it be cool if we found some?" Though this sentence seemed a bit odd as well;

In that case, extraterrestrials might serve as better role models for a prosperous future than our elected officials.

Not a lot of anything in that statement (I have read his piece). He posits that discovering alien life would be a new copernican revolution and I cannot disagree. But that has nothing to do with claims that the US deep state has covered up such proof already.

They have a local delicacy, Petit Pâté de Pézenas, that was brought there by Clive of India, when he lived in Pézenas after finally leaving India

It's a sweet lamb pastry, apparently a refined version of Keema Naan

The town was recommended to me by an antique dealer on my mail route. I was taking him packets of euros; he's heading there for its antiques shops

I always ask when I take people foreign money. I'm so surprised I found someone going somewhere on my next walk

Late reply, but I've been to Pézenas several times - it's a fabulous little town; beautiful buildings and little squares, good for eating and drinking, a fine market and, like many French towns, superbly maintained. It makes much of the fact that Molière spent a lot of time there. Easy to get there from Montpellier, and close to some lovely bits of the Languedoc coast.

According to Rear Admiral Timofhy Gallaudet, who is going to testify at the UAPs hearing on Wednesday, the United States government has evidence of "a new nature of reality."

    Rather interesting.

He’s a crank who has filmed dust motes in his daughters bedroom and thinks they are tiny ufos.
Judging from this interview I would say he seems very far from a crank, and more like an exceptionally conscientious, American Boy Scout type.

Others hav3 a different view. I’ve seen things from more skeptical folk on Twtter about him.
Avi Loeb, who has just finished studying nearly 500,000 sky objects for NASA, has just posted a rather interesting statement on his website.

It's the statement he was going to give the Congress, as he wasn't called, and mentions "a new Copernican revolution in science.
It reads a little like a plea for more research grants. Which is fair enough, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Is there a tl;dr for those of us not blessed by Elon?

Yeah, I wanted to publish this before Welby resigned.

Waiting until tomorrow morning wasn't an option.
I'm going to read Miss Cycles header in a bit with a cup of Yorkshire and a mince pie :D
    Mince pie?

    In early November?

    The world's gone mad!

And to be fair we’ve imported Black Friday without the actual reason for having it, so maybe we should import Thanksgiving too? Would nicely fill the gap…
Nor, it would seem, any idea of which day it actually is, judging by the number of sales now on.
I rather like the idea that Black Friday is actually about two weeks long.
You watched the same dodgy VHS's as me, I see.

Maybe, maybe not. He is already VP whether he gets the big job in 2028 depends largely on the success of his boss' MAGA agenda by then. If great he will be elected, if not Trump will leave Vance to carry the can and voters' vengeance

All you need is the final paragraph:

Here’s hoping that federal funding will be allocated to scientific research that will answer open questions on national security and extraterrestrials. We owe the answers on both fronts to the public.

    Quick skim doesn't seem to say any more than "There's no evidence, but wouldn't it be cool if we found some?" Though this sentence seemed a bit odd as well;

In that case, extraterrestrials might serve as better role models for a prosperous future than our elected officials.
I think the main interest is implicit, and depends on what his study shows.

He seems to be implicitly comparing the soon-to-be-
published results of his sky survey, with a Copernican revolution in Science. Whether this is because he personally has made a groundbreaking discovery, or he's just trying to generate interest, I have no idea, but it's certainly interesting, as Tim Gaudallet's testimony is.
