Stop imagining he’ll get sent to prison. A prison sentence isn’t that likely for these offences and there would be appeals for ages even if he was given a prison sentence.
Is it automatic in the state of New York that someone appealing a sentence doesn't get sent to the slammer?

There were appeals in the Weinstein case but he was sent to jail after his conviction (albeit the charges were much more serious, obviously)

What was it they said of a Shane Warne:

'He thinks a balanced diet is a cheeseburger in each hand.'
Or the exchange between Shane Warne and Darryl Cullinan.

After a few overs I said 'Darryl, don't you dare miss me this opportunity. I want to get you out again. I've been waiting four years for this.'

And he turned around and said: 'looks like you spent it eating.'

    Nope.

The US won't last forever and will probably be outlived by the DPRK, but the most likely way for it to cease to exist in the next 1-2 years would be if civil war caused a breakup...and even if there is a civil war, a breakup would be an unlikely result.

    "Existential" sounds good, though...if you're 14.

Now I'm wondering whether Hutton has read the Turner Diaries.

None of those three things is at all likely to transpire.

Note that #2 is totally immaterial re: being nominated for President. For example, my own PB-avatar, Eugene Victor Debs, was nominated by the Socialist Party in 1920 while serving time for sedition (giving an anti-WW1 speech) in Atlanta federal penitentiary.

As for #3 IF DJT was truly unavailable, the only GOPer who is LESS likely to be nominated for POTUS than Nikki Haley, is . . . wait for it . . . Mike Pence!

Voters like Tories’ policies — but Labour still well ahead in poll

Pledges on national service and cutting tax for pensioners have gone down well, but Rishi Sunak is struggling to convince voters

The Tories are struggling to convert popular policy pledges into increased support, as Labour maintains its commanding lead over the Conservatives in the polls.

The latest YouGov survey of voting intention for The Times shows the Tories are still trailing Labour by 25 points, a week into the campaign.

This is despite significant backing for Conservative plans to provide a tax cut for pensioners, scrap so-called “Mickey Mouse” degrees, and to bring in national service for 18-year-olds.

Overall YouGov found that just 6 per cent of voters had a better view of the Conservative party as a result of what they had seen and heard during the campaign so far, while 18 per cent had a worse view.

In contrast Labour, which has made no significant policy announcements, did better. YouGov found that 12 per cent of voters said they had a better view of Labour than they had at the start of the campaign while 10 per cent had a worse view.

Overall the Conservatives are up one point on 21 per cent, Labour are down one point on 46 per cent while support for Reform UK has increased from 12 per cent to 15 per cent. The Liberal Democrats are down one point on 8 per cent.

The Tories’ low ratings came despite the poll finding that showed Rishi Sunak’s policy blitz had been largely popular with voters.

I do wonder whether the inevitable capital punishment for nonce taxi drivers announcement will blow the doors off the campaign. Everyone I speak to believes the National Service idea is ill thought through and impractical, but those polled love it. There's no accounting for taste.

If this just increases the polarisation, then the Never Trump wing of the Republican party will be finished. You're either with Trump or with the Democrats.

It was never a big wing. Those few never Trumpers who existed had already left (like ex Congressman Walsh below), or were already quietly going to abstain rather than vote Biden (probably Chris Christie, Mitt Romney etc).

Things have been so coarse and unpleasant it is near impossible to see anyone, for instance, crossing the floor at this point.

    My take:

    1. FINALLY. Finally Donald Trump has been held accountable for his actions. For his crimes.

    2. Trump will not be hurt politically by this verdict. It may actually help him. This verdict will not defeat him in November. WE must defeat him.

    3. Our justice system held.

The winning candidate in a Guatemalan election ran on the slogan 'Neither corrupt, nor a thief'. He may have exaggerated his political cleanliness.

Trump could borrow Chirac's 'Vote for the crook, not the fascist' slogan from a couple decades back (Trump calls his opponents both communists and fascists).

When you see most modern professional sports people they are on the just different beasts, particularly the ones that last the test of time. The strength and conditioning, the nutrition, etc etc etc.

The modern rugby guys are just absolute units. When they are on the pitch together you look and think oh such and such is quite big, then if you see them with normal people you go oh shit, they could eat them for breakfast.

This is nothing on the level of corruption that we are dealing with when it comes to Trump. One day it will come out.

Contrary to this idea that everything helps him electorally, this won't. Trump has a ceiling and the top of that is a lot less frothy than for Biden. He has less voters to swing and the idea that those voters are going to buy the persecution thing I think is false because they arent zealots.
  • kle4kle4 Posts: 96,071
The only change to the US electoral scene will be that Trump's name will be preceded by the words 'Convicted felon' on every left leaning news outlet, in print or broadcast.

You'd think no one in the USA would be unaware of that after 1 hour, but the non-political can amazingly surpise people.

    3. Conclusion: something's gotta break.

Watch Haley. She may seriously want to take over the ultra-obnoxious shitbag ticket:

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/us/politics/2024/05/29/nikki-haley-signs-shell-israel-visit-gaza-hama/

If Trump gets sent to prison and can't attend the GOP convention, surely Haley will make a move?
None of those three things is at all likely to transpire.

Note that #2 is totally immaterial re: being nominated for President. For example, my own PB-avatar, Eugene Victor Debs, was nominated by the Socialist Party in 1920 while serving time for sedition (giving an anti-WW1 speech) in Atlanta federal penitentiary.

As for #3 IF DJT was truly unavailable, the only GOPer who is LESS likely to be nominated for POTUS than Nikki Haley, is . . . wait for it . . . Mike Pence!
A lot can happen in six months, and if Trump is in jail during the convention there may be scope for a Republican to emerge unchallenged as a harder than hard We Love Trump figure...and then, who knows? Could be Haley, could be Cotton.

Trump is unlikely to cope well with prison if it's for more than a week or so, during which time he could possibly maintain the "I'm the greatest - my trial was rigged" self-delusion on some kind of kilter. Longer than that, he'll kook out to a higher level (which he might possibly do earlier too).

If this just increases the polarisation, then the Never Trump wing of the Republican party will be finished. You're either with Trump or with the Democrats.

Which cements the Trump and MAGA crowd hold over the GOP even firmer but also likely switches Independents back to the Democrats

A tremendous batsman but you can't hide an unfit fielder as wicket keeper. Pakistan are going to have to change this.
T20 is a game of very small edges. These days you really can't have passengers if you want to win. Rahkeem Cornwall is not in the WI T20 squad, I suspect for this very reason.

Not saying England will win T20, but all the players are good / excellent fielders, they can all bat even #11 Mark Wood can be incredibly destructive and over half the team can bowl at international level.
I remember staying in the same hotel in Leeds as the England cricket team. They were in the main incredibly tall, standing between Finn and Broad at breakfast I felt like a midget. But when you saw them side on to a man they pretty much disappeared. All of the were incredibly lean and obviously spent absurd amounts of time in the gym.

But look at his superhuman ability. He can send it down at 90mph with seemingly zero effort.

Mark Wood sending them down at 95-96 mph this evening is just nuts.

In his last election for Governor of Louisiana, Edwin Edwards campaigned with the memorable slogan

"Vote for the crook, it's the right thing to do"

Of course his opponent was junior Nazi and KKK wizard David Duke. So you can see why folks in the Pelican State were willing and able to put THAT bumper stickers on their cars.

You haven't looked at it more. I've followed this trial every day - the defense has some points they scored (some inconsistencies, the difficulties tying Trump directly to some actions), they have some points they could raise on appeal (the question of the second crime which had to be undertaken to make it a felony for example), but the case was not reliant on Cohen (though he was significant). Trump's lawyers have made very different arguments to those the media talking heads make - whether you buy the former's arguments or not, they were not making the case the media heads were.

And as for the DA's office being politically motivated, well, unfortunately that is the american legal system - it sucks, but that is their way.

As I mentioned, the most damning testimony came from people who like Trump. People who said they admire him. People who worked for him, and people who still work for him. They were not out to get him, they were compelled to testify and tell the truth.

It's fine to question any verdict, but there's a lot more to this case than Cohen, if that is what you are reading you are reading a lie.

'Inside the pub, a middle-aged woman said when asked about the general election: “I’d rather not talk about it. It’s too depressing.”

But a moment or two later she added: “When it was Boris we changed over to Conservative and now we’re back to Labour.

“I worry about America having two dopey candidates, but I’m not sure we’re doing much better.

“I think if Boris was still in I’d vote for Boris, obviously. He was dopey but he was our dopey.

“I don’t want Keir Starmer starting to put flat caps on and pretend he’s something he isn’t.”

Yes but black voters don't turn out en masse unless for one of their own like Obama (and even with Trump gains most will still vote for Biden again).

US elections are actually determined now by white suburban graduates normally, they voted for Trump in 2016 narrowly, for Biden in 2020 narrowly and this could tip them back to Biden

How would you feel about your vote for Starmer if in mid July it came out that The Guardian had bought up the rights to a story that showed he had ****** a ***** *** with a ***** ***** *****? The American voters might have had cause to reconsider their vote for Trump if on top of grabbing women by the pussy, it came out he had a (very short) sexy romp with a porn star? In a close election, how many of his religious Right supporters might just have gone "Eeeeew...."? Admittedly, they wouln't have voted for Clinton, but in a tight race, some more abstentions might have cost him Electoral College votes.

We can never know. Although we can do polling.

Labour 23 points ahead in a Lord Ashcroft poll published in tomorrow’s Daily Mail.

Still expecting a closer result on election day?
I think I was on majority 70 in the competition. Am beginning to waver that that might undercall it.
It's been mentioned several times on here, but the implications if the nowcasters are right haven't been seriously thought through. Everyone seems to agree with that point. But then move on and don't actually think it through.
As if it's too ludicrous to even contemplate a Labour majority of 300+.
Maybe it is highly unlikely. But right now it isn't impossible.

    Queens man convicted

    https://queenseagle.com/all/2024/5/30/queens-man-convicted
Former Jamaica Estates resident Donald Trump was convicted by a Manhattan jury on Thursday of 34 counts of falsifying business records in an effort to cover up a sex scandal he feared would ruin his chances of winning the 2016 presidential election.

The jury’s verdict, which came after only two days of deliberations, makes Trump the first president from Queens – or anywhere in the United States, for that matter – to become a felon…

When Leon says “the more you look at it”, he actually means the more you read right wing Twitter.
Which given that reacts to standard court procedure (like whether the defence or prosecution sums up first) with accusations of bias and unconstitutionality, can hardly be relied upon shall we charitably say.

Look, left wing american takes are going to gloss over any exculpatory stuff and see things in the most negative of light for Trump, sure, but so many of the contrary takes are done on the assumption that no one has raised any issues or looked at any facts, like the one in recent days that no details of the alleged crime were provided. No, they really were, and the defense argued it was not proven is all.

Most of the fresh takes are done as though there was not like a year of pre-trial stuff going on around witnesses, evidence, and points of law. The latter bits could always end up being appealed, that happens all the time, but 'OH MY GOD I JUST LOOKED AT THE CHARGE AND ITS A THIN CHARGE' or whatever is just trolling.

Given that Trump's legal strategy in all cases has been delay delay delay, it's going to be funny watching him trying to expedite the appeal. Although maybe he will actually think that he can make hay with the victim narrative, get elected, and then pardon himself.

It's still a NY State conviction.
    So he couldn't pardon himself.

I haven’t looked at ANY of it in detail. So I’m approaching if like the average American (also, FWIW, I despise Trump and think he’s a disaster for the West at THE moment when we need hard right American leadership)

What I casually see is an unsavoury politically motivated New York attorney whose whole shtick is “getting trump” for which reason she was elected. It’s a great advert for not electing legal figures. It’s a get-out for Trump. And it’s possibly a casus belli for US Civil War

    Nighty night
The NY AG didn't convict him. A jury of 12 regular Americans did so. Unanimously. On 33 counts.
I would take issue with "regular". The jurors were all from New York County (Manhattan), which has the highest per capita income of any county in the US and which voted 86% Democrat. So really pretty atypical actually.

    Tory policy of the day...

Fly-tippers to get points on driving licence, Tories promise

The Conservatives have unveiled plans to dock points from fly-tippers' driving licenses and evict disruptive tenants from social housing.

Repeat fly-tippers currently face up to five years in prison and an unlimited fine, but new plans could also see low-level offenders face driving penalties. Mr Sunak has also promised a new law to evict repeat offenders from social housing after three verified instances of anti-social behaviour - including such as noise disturbances, vandalism, and other forms of harassment.

They were all thoroughly vetted in open court. They are atypical in that both Never Trump and Always Trump were weeded out.

An interesting aspect of Trump's conviction as a felon is how many of his co-accused in other trials now run to the Prosecutor to cut a deal. Especially in Georgia and noteably the Arizona fake electors, where Trump is currently Unindicted Co-conspiritor #1. That status could easily change before the election.
