Harris ain't that. I bet she's costing him in the polling

If I were President (I would not carry oh no small change), I'd want Pete

Stuck with what he's got (I cannot speak as to her quality myself), much as the Dems were stuck with him once he decided he wanted to rerun.

From what I've seen of Pete he seems very good.
Surely the Dems' MIGS could persuade her to take another really important job?
    What's a MIG?

I know many progressive folks seemed disappointed that Biden got the nomination the first time, and probably were disappointed that he ran again, but Harris surely will think she has a good chance of taking over part way through a second term at least and becoming the first female President, so it's presumably worth sticking around no matter what.

Sadly I don’t see a gay candidate winning the Presidency.

His problem isn’t that he’s gay, it’s that he’s been utterly terrible at the transport brief for the last three years. He’ll happily turn up to the opening of a city bus station, but won’t be seen for weeks when there’s a train crash or a bridge falls down.
I’ve seen him in interviews and thought he was good. Admittedly as for his actual success re his brief I couldn’t say .

Historically, VP candidates matter little (or less) to POTUS voters.

Typically may help carry their home states. OR not.

Re: 2024, the political pain of ditching Kamala Harris with (some) Black voters, would outweigh any advantages of a potential (esp. non-Black) replacement.

Note that last POTUS to change VPs was Franklin Roosevelt, who did it twice: 1940 (Garner out, Wallace in); and 1944 (Wallace out, Truman in).
If only Pete could come out as Black..
Transracialism remains socially unacceptable. For now at any rate.

(Cameron makes Sunak look like a bumbling amateur in this video. I am not pro conservative, but this is an expert politician at work. Very professional - this is the kind of material the tories need. 10 people of that calibre to stand a chance)

He’s on a different level - in rhetoric, confidence, maturity - from his front bench peers.
It really highlights the lack of talent and competence caused by BJs cull in 2019. The populists that replaced them had nothing ... there is just nothing except grievance and emotion. But governance needs more. Let's get this straight: Cameron and his lot brought brutal ideologically driven austerity on the country.... but that is still better than the horror inflicted on the country by the popcons and brexit. Dear me.
The absence of talent in the Tory ranks was started mainly by Cameron's absolute betrayal of trust in abandoning ship at exactly the moment it was essential he saw through the, entirely foreseeable, consequences of his own policies. The party has never recovered.
How long do you think Cameron and Osborne would have been allowed to remain in charge of Brexit negotiations by the ERG?
Cameron was PM, not the ERG. If they had had the numbers to oust him and did so, then it would their responsibility. Most Tory MPs were centrists.
I don't think you could have someone who led the losing side running negotiations for a policy he did not advocate.

Though one could say that having no plans in place if the referendum was lost was plain irresponsible and buggering off within 24 hours was plain dereliction of duty.
Perhaps he believed the Leave side who said it would be the easiest trade deal in history and no deal was Project Fear bollocks.

FWIW - I know for a fact that Gove and Johnson spent 21st of June to 23rd of June 2016 trying to ensure there wasn't a vote of confidence against Dave is Remain won.

There were enough of the ERG ready to trigger a confidence vote.
Which is to Gove and Johnson's credit.
They genuinely thought Remain were going to win.
    Who didn't to be fair?

It took him days to turn up at this bridge, and the big train crash last year it took him weeks to show up, when all his officials were saying that there was nothing to worry about as many locals were already being taken sick.

It's a fair point, though people do sometimes over correct. My go to example is the 2010 Leader debates. Personally I didn't think Brown did horribly, but his team apparently disagreed, as they spent so much time hammering home that presentation wasn't everything, that it made his own performance worse than it seemed.

Plus if he was better at slick presentation his people would never have argued it meant nothing, but of course if one lacks style you try to pretend as though that in itself means you have substance (and that having style precludes someone from having substance).

MIGs were, possibly still are, the Luton soccer teams fans football ‘firm’. AKA inadequate pricks who like a brawl. MIG = Men in Gear.

    Tommy Robinson was one.
I though the MiGs were what the Ukranians have been shooting down for the past couple of years.

He was at the bridge three days ago.
It took him days to turn up at this bridge, and the big train crash last year it took him weeks to show up, when all his officials were saying that there was nothing to worry about as many locals were already being taken sick.

For what it's worth (2-cents at best?) agree with you re: the East Palestine rail disaster (at least re: optics).

However, disagree with your take (at least so far) re: Baltimore bridge disaster; BUT still early days on that.

If I were President (I would not carry oh no small change), I'd want Pete

Historically, VP candidates matter little (or less) to POTUS voters.

Typically may help carry their home states. OR not.

Re: 2024, the political pain of ditching Kamala Harris with (some) Black voters, would outweigh any advantages of a potential (esp. non-Black) replacement.

Note that last POTUS to change VPs was Franklin Roosevelt, who did it twice: 1940 (Garner out, Wallace in); and 1944 (Wallace out, Truman in).
If only Pete could come out as Black..
Transracialism remains socially unacceptable. For now at any rate.
    Except for Sacha Baron Cohen.

Yes, for membership you have to have a rock solid conviction that America is not so far gone to the dogs as to reelect Donald Trump as president.

Is that you? I know you despise him but do you have the requisite faith in America?
I've laid Trump for the presidency (long time ago) if that counts. Also backed Biden when he was long, but cashed that out for a very marginal return (got cold feet on him, should have stuck to my conviction that if he wanted to stand he'd be the candidate and likely win against Trump).

I'm up unless Trump is the next POTUS. If he is, my losses will be least of my concerns.

I thought it would be a toss up as the polls were pretty much split down the middle, some shading Remain, some Leave in the final week.

Way back in 1984, was traveling in Europe, and was asked (more than once) who I thought was gonna win that year's US presidential election.

Reagan, I replied. While assuring them I was voting for Mondale.

Then why, they countered, were all the Americans THEY'd run into, also planning to vote against Reagan.

Because, I said, the average American is NOT travelling in Europe, that year or most years.

ALSO had interesting experience, that year, of cruising up the Danube in Hungary, the day that Reagan "joked" re: the Soviet Union, that "the bombings will begin shortly".

Which was less funny than a rubber crutch to us USers on board!

It's similar to the way people gush over that video of Cameron at the NATO summit. Some people are very easily impressed by superficially slick and fluent presentation.

They were probably twentysomethings who'd watched a film about an election and knew the right people and thought they were psychological warfare geniuses. "Our opponents are fighting on presentation, but we're not about presentation" is an idiotic line. It's right up there with accusing your opponents of disinformation.

One only has to read down to the second paragraph, to draw that conclusion:

The ship makes no sense, vertically or horizontally. It makes no sense on sea, or on land, or in outer space. It looks like a hodgepodge of domes and minarets, tubes and canopies, like Istanbul had it been designed by idiots. Vibrant, oversignifying colors are stacked upon other such colors, decks perched over still more decks; the only comfort is a row of lifeboats ringing its perimeter. There is no imposed order, no cogent thought, and, for those who do not harbor a totalitarian sense of gigantomania, no visual mercy.

$10 says he’s never been to Istanbul either.

My thinking being that election winners often become more unpopular as hopes hit reality and they can't deliver for all who voted for them. The new guy can have an advantage.

But I don't think there were that many hopes and dreams for Biden. He was elected to be not Trump and he's been not Trump. Anyone who voted for him for that reason has no cause to change their vote (had the GOP chosen Haley or pretty much anyone else but Trump, I think she/they could have converted votes). The Jan 2020 events and subsequent events must surely turn some reasonable GOPers who voted Trump in 2016 off Trump. So I really struggle to see how Trump wins assuming Biden makes it to the election (hell, even if Harris becomes the candidate, she's still not Trump).

Pleased to announce I just won the BA mini fist pump jackpot: an upgrade (but on a short haul flight, so whatever) but then finding myself in one of those flights for which the work ply was invented, as in “ply with champagne”. As we were coming in to land they were still doling it out, but in plastic cups for safety reasons.

Third time I’ve had that sort of end-of-term vibe on a BA short haul flight. Is it a planned strategy to keep the frequent flyers loyal, or just flight attendants thinking “what the hell, let’s exhaust the stocks”?

Can I apply for membership? How much are the fees?
I have no Trump Toast illustration yet, just these

Soon to be joined by the current Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner, who remarkably is the new Conservative PCC Candidate for May 2nd 2024. They have gone mad.
    I don't see an issue.
Makes it easy to answer the debate question: please outline your experience in crime commissioning

It's similar to the way people gush over that video of Cameron at the NATO summit. Some people are very easily impressed by superficially slick and fluent presentation.

They were probably twentysomethings who'd watched a film about an election and knew the right people and thought they were psychological warfare geniuses. "Our opponents are fighting on presentation, but we're not about presentation" is an idiotic line. It's right up there with accusing your opponents of disinformation.
If so then the grown up politicians did what they suggested unfortunately.

I was on a cruise full of Americans a few years ago. They were mainly Never Trump Republicans and the concensus was that Mayor Pete's sexuality would not be the problem I suggested it would be. They reckoned those who had a problem would never have voted for him anyway as he was a Dem.
Interesting, I had a similar experience on an American cruise (in Europe) earlier this year. I have a theory that the hard-core MAGA crowd don't travel abroad much, so you're unlikely to meet them outside the US.
Did you read the almost-hilarious but extremely snobby and a tad too long account of a cruise trip in The Atlantic this week?

Well wasn't me as even when I lived in slough tried to avoid going to london full stop I think I ate in a london restaurant twice in 37 years. Besides the fat duck in bray was nearer

I must be very lucky. In 20 years of driving I must have done 35 in a 30 accidentally numerous times, but I've never been ticketed.

(This morning my insurance renewal came through. £228pa down from £423pa. So maybe I am just charmed.)

Or perhaps for the New Conservative Party dedicated to losing elections, given the ~51%:49% victory margin last time.

A decent pork chop is seared then put on a bed of proscuitio before crumbling stilton and finely chopped apple on it then wrap the proscuttio round and baked....dont need a restaurant to do that for you its quick and easy at home

I'm not really sure how to react, the author was clearly certain he would not enjoy the experience and so it turned out. Our experience, on smaller, UK cruise boats has been very different. But I am not going to evangelise about cruising - if you think you're going to hate it you probably should give it a miss. We quite enjoy it though.

Believe it or not, I actually went on a cruise, due mainly to my gf developing a phobia against flying just couldn't get her on a plane. We were both jeans and tee shirts sort of people...I still am and probably she still is....but because we were going on a cruise we did the whole formal thing for the required 3 nights, cocktail dress and suits for the informal and stuff to fit in. We selected to sit at a table for 8 rather than just us 2. There were definitely a few people we met we disliked. Most were just normal friendly people though. We never did it again but yes we had a good time and met some great people from many other walks of life

Sadly I don’t see a gay candidate winning the Presidency.

This is the canonical anti-cruise whinge:

I've never been on a cruise, but I imagine I could happily extract enjoyment from it, no matter how tacky the line. I'm happy to say snobby things for amusement, but I'm not at heart a snob.

The writer comes over as the only thing he is communicating is that he is actually a giant arsehole
The Americans haven’t learned subtle understated snobbery yet. Give them time.
Don't think its about snobbery....he would have hated you, he would have hate me. You are on the left I am on the right. Guy just have a chip on his shoulder about the sort of people go on cruises and comes across as "I made no effort to fit in, why will no one talk to me just because I go out of my way not to fit in"
    I’m in the middle, supposedly.
But yes, this was a New Yorker complaining that a cruise off Florida isn’t like New York.
I was strongly reminded of the stereotype of the English working class man who can’t understand why he can’t get a good fry up at
beach cafe, where ever he is.

“Don’t these bleed’n furinnners know how to cook food?!”
Tbf that is getting more often, where I am done a recce of all the nearby cafe's they all do english breakfasts but none of them have a fried slice which is the best bit
Fried slices are absolutely the best bit. I was lucky enough to have either fried bread or eggy bread at least 4 times a week during mid-childhood.

Actually come to think of it I’m home alone for the rest of the week. So I think I might do fry ups for breakfast.

I must be very lucky. In 20 years of driving I must have done 35 in a 30 accidentally numerous times, but I've never been ticketed.

(This morning my insurance renewal came through. £228pa down from £423pa. So maybe I am just charmed.)

Years ago, when I moved for a year to a Midlands town, it went from 350 to 1400. Apparently fake personal injury scams were the cause. Something the government should get sorted.

One hopes for at least a modicum of grey matter and environmental awareness, and a lack of hypocrisy, in prospective PCCs.

And that's without getting into road safety debates, where there may be different views.

Nottingham has been using averaging speed cameras since the 1990s (the Association of British Drivers made a huge fuss back then, even before 1998 when I moved to London), and is pretty notorious for cracking down on speeders on radial routes - especially on urban dual carriageways.

I think all of those sites have had averaging or fixed cameras for more than 10 years, and perhaps 20 years, before she was caught, with prominent signs.

At last, a subject on which I can speak with some authority.

You're quite right - a good fried slice goes a long way but the other two things I look for when judging a cafe is how they cook mushrooms and second, the quality of the sausage not just in terms of how it's cooked but whether it's a decent banger or something cheap and horrible. You can ruin a good sausage by bad cooking but it's impossible to make a bad sausage really good.

Cafes owned and run by Turks, Greeks or Portuguese often do a very good Full English and while you can pay a bit more for quality there's plenty of good places which can still be value. My hint is NOT to order the Set options - choose what you want and tell them. My "normal" is two fried eggs, fried slice, mushrooms and sausage.

I have my favourites - in London, Becks in Red Lion Street offers kidneys as part of the breakfast options and they are a real treat. There's a couple of places in East London where the bubble is exceptional. Pellicci's in Bethnal Green Road is a East London institution. I was in Woolwich yesterday and tried the Arsenal Gate Cafe - unpretentious, good value and while not top notch, well cooked and very tasty albeit not the best quality ingredients.

I was certainly not implying that the social side is a reason to cruise, I merely was pointing out by not making a point of being an arsehole and insisting on standing out from what others were dressing like we found socialisation easy and a pleasant addition to the holiday

Mrs Stodge and I have done a fair number of cruises. Our current favourite lines are Princess and Holland America though we've yet to try Celebrity. Our last was on Anthem of the Seas which was built in 2015 and looks dated. The main issue was the constant upselling by the crew - the requests for money made it feel like home though it was done by people better dressed than our usual quality of panhandler on the District Line.

The cruise we were on unfortunately ran into a force 11 storm in the bay of biscay and as we were at a table for 8 and the only two that showed up due to others feeling sea sick we accidentaly found we had 4 lobsters each....we werent complaining

The abortion laws in the US are appalling.

I hope Trump doesn't win. Better hope Trump doesn't win. Not only will women be worse off, we will have a much much bigger and more direct russia problem on our borders.

Perhaps but it's still to their credit.

Reining in your own side isn't easy, and they could easily have still rode it to push for the crown themselves.

Pete Buttigieg minus the elephant in the room would trounce Trump,.

Sadly I don’t see a gay candidate winning the Presidency.

Did you read the almost-hilarious but extremely snobby and a tad too long account of a cruise trip in The Atlantic this week?

    https://t.co/TXxKH4IEVF

I hadn't seen it but have just read it now.

We have been on many cruises including expedition to Antarctica and on each and every one they were chosen for the places to visit and not for the social side, winning and dining

    And Arsenal now 1 up
I was certainly not implying that the social side is a reason to cruise, I merely was pointing out by not making a point of being an arsehole and insisting on standing out from what others were dressing like we found socialisation easy and a pleasant addition to the holiday
I know you weren't and it is important for many who cruise, but in our case it was all about places and peoples

Actually on our last cruise from Southampton to Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New England and New York over 28 days we were accompanied by gay friends of ours and they really enjoyed all the social side
