Off-topic, just seen that I got tagged as a lefty/Labour stooge a few days back. I've voted Lab at a GE once, out of six I've voted in. The same number of times I've voted Conservative in a GE. I will most likely make it 2/7 (for Lab, not Con!) at the next GE, but more a tactical than a conviction vote.
The mistake CR makes (possibly, I haven't fully untangled whether CR started it) is that I'm 'woke', not particularly left. Where 'woke' is used as a synonym for socially liberal.
Woke doesn't mean anything.
How is being a vegan woke?
Woke does mean something, just not the same to everyone. A bit like porn. How do you define porn? Different people get off on different things. Woke is different for different people.
In general things described as woke are not bad in themselves, but there can be unintended consequences.
For instance, you might decide that not enough women are involved in x industry. You might then start only recruiting women to make up the deficit. Is this fair? proportionate? You might be organising an event and insist on vegan only catering, to accommodate vegans, ignoring the fact that most people are not vegan and would prefer a choice.
You might even get hung up on whether a woman can have a penis.
Gonna stop you on the catering issue - I work in an office where about 25% of us are veggie or vegan. We had to stop ordering meat options because the meat eaters would eat the veggie / vegan options but we obviously couldn't eat the meaty options, so we were left hungry and we would have leftovers.
Woke is just "political correctness gone mad" which is just "loony lefties" again. Got to remember the original "loony left" usage was to attack local councils who were advocating for, shock horror, treating queer people like human beings and, gasp, catering to ethnic minorities in their communities. It's always been the same thing - if you argue for equitable treatment of people typically considered the out groups, people who benefit from the inequitable treatment complain and try and make you out as a weirdo.
So 75% don't get the option of meat? Sounds fair...
I agree woke is tenuous, and in reality 'don't be a dick' and 'be nice to people' covers most things. However there is a substance there somewhere. Moving from Christmas to Winterval to be more inclusive (who voted for that?). I think sometimes the issue is culture warriors fighting battles on behalf of others, typically others who don't care. Such as all the non-Christians our there who happily celebrate Christmas, including atheists, muslims, budhhists etc. There is also a tendency to want keep ratcheting a dial.
But hey, its not the biggest issue in the world right now.
Well no, because they tend to leave meat behind uneaten and eat all the veggie options anyway!
I mean, how much of the "Winterval" stuff actually exists out there, though? Like, when I send emails out to students I will typically say "winter break", but that's because that's what it is. I think most people try to "not be a dick" or "be nice to people" and then people with an axe to grind wind themselves up about it for no reason. It doesn't hurt you if I don't celebrate Christmas and don't wish anyone a "Merry Christmas" so why get vexed if I say "Happy Holidays" or, indeed, nothing at all?
Fuck off
We now have a de facto blasphemy law. Not only that, it is a brutal blasphemy law. Offend Islam and you die
There is a teacher from batley who will be in hiding the rest of his life because he dared to show pupils something that “offended” their Islamic religion. No teacher will now ever dare to do this again
That’s a blasphemy law the likes of which we haven’t seen since the 17th century. That is Wokeness, that is what it means, it means the end of the Enlightenment, and useful idiots like you who try to claim it is all a fuss about nothing can go jump in the sea. You stupid stupid cretin
He was cleared of all wrong doing and told to have his job back - that is literally the opposite of a blasphemy law and was not him being killed. Indeed, the law affirmed that teachers do have the right to do that under law - whether there are social consequences is outside of the law. Many teachers I had said things they had a legal right to (calling me a fairy probably didn't quite constitute hate speech) - doesn't mean I had to be nice to them and be happy about it.
With something like depicting the prophet of Mohammad, especially if you're teaching in a school with a lot of Muslim students, I do think it would be reasonable to consider how students would take that. I also think it would be reasonable to do the same for Christ, Moses, Abraham, Buddah etc for example. Were the people who protested against Monty Python's Life of Brian, or Jerry Springer the Opera, also woke? People care about their religion and complain when it gets mocked - I think it's reasonable to say that as a society we should allow space for that and we can discuss whether a teacher doing it in a classroom is one of those spaces.
Also, once again happy to be referred to as a stupid cretin rather than faint praise for how much I interest you - glad I can contain multitudes.

I'm still somewhat confused about your insistence on looking to history rather than to data in front of us.
The current polling has Labour anywhere between 40-48% of the vote, and the Tories in the low 20% area. Even the byelections we have seen have been more in line with the mood at a given time then historical trends. To be honest, there may be an argument to be made that even some of these that the Tories held could be at risk now, rather than the opposite of saying that some won by Labour or LD could revert back to blue.
The only thing that exists is history. The present is fleeting, the future doesn't exist. The data in front of us is part of history. There is no future data.
To guess/predict what will happen in the future is to select from historical data (there is no other) what you think relevant, guess what factors will weigh in and how it will affect things between now and the future date (itself an unknown in the case of the next GE), allow for Black Swans and pile in.
So, for example, on the extremes of current polling + Baxtering, the Tories end up with 50 seats. Did I read that on the Wellingborough result they end up with four seats only?
OTOH, in Kingswood the swing was 16 %points. A considered and recent academic view is that Labour need a 12.7point swing to get a majority at all. On that single piece of data, given what can happen during a campaign and the weaknesses of Labour, NOM is perfectly possible.
Philosophy of time aside; what evidence is there that "historic precedent" is a better predictor than current polling? To me the evidence suggests if you want historic precedent look at the wipe out of the Tories in Canada, not look at all past UK elections, because 1) it's clear that now is not like all past UK elections and 2) the polling data we have and the election system we have is most similar to that of our Canadian friends. If the polling data was all over the place, I would concede to historical precedent - but it isn't.
The polls are within a relatively consistent set of figures that show the Tories either losing and Labour having a reasonable majority all the way to an extinction level event for the Conservatives where they could have fewer seats than the LDs or SNP. It is possible that the next Tory leader may not even be LOTO. And yet instead the environment here seems to be one of an inevitable reversion to some foundational political mean that just doesn't seem to exist.
Good and interesting points. (BTW there was no philosophy of time in what I said, which was mere common sense plus a moment's reflection. For time's philosophy, maybe start with Kant's insights in the first Critique, found in the transcendental aesthetic).
Now and when the GE comes, current (recent) polling is part of the history. The polling data is all over the place, as during the government's time polling data has at times consistently been favourable to the Tories. Stuff changes. Look at the 2017 GE.
Personally I want Labour to win. On the data I think a Tory win is vanishingly unlikely but a NOM (no-one gets 326 seats) is more likely than the betting markets indicate. Reasons: guesswork, how the Tories will campaign, Labour's well known weaknesses, Reform voters turn back to the Tories, the Kingswood result, traditional election bribery.

I'd suggest people compare the current polling to that before 1997. It's notable how much worse the Tories are polling now than before 1997, and that is even though we know the polling before 1997 was biased against the Tories. We haven't seen a poll score for the Tories above 30% for a considerable length of time, and even with many fewer polls that was not the case before 1997.
The Labour scores are lower now, but if we compare to the ICM polls before 1997, the difference is not big. Looking at the two big parties then I think a 1997-style result deserves to be considered a central scenario.
The difference now is in the other parties. The Lib Dems seem weaker, which should save many Tory seats, and if the strength of Reform in the polls is largely a mirage, that is an opportunity for the Tories to close the gap - though also a risk of the gap widening.
What it does not look like it's the polling in the run-up to the 1992 GE.
I've done a bit of playing around on electoral Calculus though, and it's really hard to drive Tory seats down into third place - it's certainly not remotely likely when they're more than 10pp ahead of the third party in the polls.

Building control system on the verge of collapse....
"LABC chief executive Lorna Stimpson has written to HSE and government chiefs warning that “local authorities will cease to be able to undertake a building control function post April 6.”
This will mean ongoing construction projects will not be inspected while stop and compliance notices will not also be served....
One industry expert said: “Building control has been neglected and under-resourced for years but these changes look like they will tip the whole system into chaos.
“Experienced inspectors are retiring with no-one to take their place while the authorities have been sleep walking towards this deadline for ages without any thought as to how things will work in the real world.”
A large part of this is the Process State - Building Control the organisation has steadily detached and sailed away from controlling and inspecting construction.
So you have more paperwork than ever before, vast sums expended and more and more defective buildings slipping through.
The friend who is on the management committee of his new built block tells me that they have decided that his block can have new cladding - after the remedial structural work has been done. Since they discovered the building is structurally deficient, while investigating the cladding.
The next door block was evacuated and remains empty. Because they aren’t sure *how* structurally deficient it is. Concrete is fucked apparently. On top of getting the calculations for load wrong.
Both buildings were signed off and inhabited for a number of years before this was noticed.
@Malmesbury That was an insightful header you wrote about "process". Not directly linked but I have been working on a development with about 400 sqm of child play space. The play equipment is three metal poles with large areas of rubber around it on the ground. This is to comply with requirements for health and safety, as well as security requirements. A monument to safetyism and absurdity.

On the food. Clearly if people are going hungry then a mistake has been made, but I don't think that means you have to order zero meat options. Surely there's a middle ground where there is a choice for those who might want to eat meat, but not so much that non-meat eaters are lefty without - though I'm speaking here as one of those omnivores who tends to avoid meat in a buffet situation, not knowing where it is from, or how long it has been waiting there.
As to woke generally, there is a lot which is simply this generation's treating people with respect, but there is an element, perhaps a product of the way in which people get riled up online, of being uncompromising, impatient, and, ironically, rude about it.
It's as though people forget that it might well be a new idea for other people, that it often takes people a while to get used to new ideas, and a bit of open-hearted patience and the benefit of the doubt can go a long way.
Taking this back to the food example, if a 3:1 meat: no-meat order didn't work, why not try 1:1, or 1:3, before leaping straight away to no meat at all?
I don't understand why the meat thing is such an issue. When catering at a work do having only veggie / vegan options allows for a typically cheaper option that has (in my experience at least) less waste (and of course the impact of waste is different for meat products and non-meat products), and also means the actual vegetarians and vegans get enough food, rather than having to share the stuff they can eat with people who will also eat stuff (and leave behind stuff) we can't eat. It's not exclusionary - no one is unable to eat non-meat options. Meat is not an essential - there is no right to meat in every food option. It was also agreed by everyone, meat eaters and not.
Saves a lot of hassle also with religious restrictions (eg RCs on a Friday), and people who won't eat certain meats for reasons of risk. And, on the whole, there's less food poisoning risk than with meat and seafood if the conditions haven't been great (this can be a real worry in some workplaces).
The evidence of people having dreams that foretold Aberfan is quite compelling. Mad, but compelling
They were strangely vivid dreams about close friends or lovers, so people that I knew well. They felt different to more run of the mill dreams. Each became true within days to weeks.
The incidents were quite personal, but also prosaic. Meeting people that I hadn't seen for months for example. Not quite the same as deja but, but a related phenomenon I suppose.
Never had a prophetic dream. I don't believe in that old caper.
I was working from home on 7/7 and I was suddenly overcome by a feeling of dread. I went from my study to the lounge and turned on the TV and news was coming through about the Russell Square bus. I vaguely knew a woman from Ledbury who was killed in the tube at Lancaster Gate, but I had no real connection. It wasn't like I was being called to from the other side. It must have just been some bizarre coincidence.
I quite often dream I've come up with some startlingly brilliant invention.
When I wake up I either can't remember what it was or* the idea is utter shite.
(I have no illusions that the ones I can't remember were other than utter shite too.)

If it was agreed by everyone then there's no issue - but we have people on here saying that they've felt excluded by not having a meat option, so, maybe they're a group of people to consider.
They are allowing the deconstruction of the Enlightenment - to appease Islam and to satisfy some moronic desire for an equity which cannot happen and is not even achievable, all so they can feel “good”
Thankfully I can flee the UK as this madness burns slow then fast, corroding away everything of moral value
However, I pity my descendants who will have to try and salvage…. Something

The examples of Life of Brian or the book of Mormon or possibly Jerry Springer (not sure of the religious aspect there but don't know much about it) are interesting because. well, for example, none of the Pythons or any of those other fellas had to go into hiding for fear of their lives like, say, Salman Rushdie did. Or the fellas from Charlie Hebdo.
And was the teacher really 'mocking' Islam? AIRI he was doing something pretty innocuous.

And it's not just treating people with respect, is it? Nobody thinks we should be persecuting minority groups. But most people also think we shouldn't be giving them special treatment and privileges (like preference for jobs and/or grants, for example). And yet, that is what happens. I know we struggle to define woke, but I would say that's one of the definitions.

Interesting! Do you ever recall such a feeling at another time? (I.e. was this the only time you felt that way?)
I had an interesting variant on this - an encounter with Pan. Walking alone on Salisbury Plain, aged around 16, I suddenly felt a need to be as far away from where I was as possible. I jogged/fast walked the three miles back to my village and only really felt right when well inside the village. I didn't see anything or hear anything, just felt wrong. Such an occurence is often attributed to Pan (and hence Panic) but maybe I just spoked myself... I am born and raised on the Chalk of the Plain and normally feel totally at home, so it was an odd one to say the least.
Fascinating. Panic is definitely a thing - as in the true sense of Pan-ic - which you note
The most interesting people tend to be the total pragmatists and materialists who, nonetheless, have had totally inexplicable experiences
I look back on the event (more than 30 years ago now) and cannot really remember how it felt, other than a feeling of 'not right' and 'want to be out of here' right now. There was no-one around (although I could hear traffic noise from the A303 to the south). Its just odd. My rational brain says I spooked myself, but the irrational , Fortean loving, side, says maybe it was a real malign entity out there.

No that was the only occasion. I knew something dramatic and dreadful had occurred, but I had no idea what.
Do you see this as paranormal? Or just coincidence?
It sounds like something definitely happened
Coincidence. But an odd coincidence nonetheless. I have attempted to rationalise it, to no avail.

If you are aware - as, say, Leon is - that a lot of discrimination is subconscious and hard to dispel, because a certain amount of racism and other discrimination is simply a result of hard-wired wariness towards the other, then you have a choice to make.
Either you accept this discrimination as inevitable and just one of those things, or you have to choose to do something to counter the effect and even things up.

You've spectacularly got the wrong end of the stick.
In the case of the Life of Brian, the parallel would be if the Pope had issued a death sentence against John Cleese and Graham Chapman, then someone stabbed them, and the 'woke' brushed it under the carpet and suggested that they brought it on themselves.

Here's another odd thing about dreams: that you can completely shock yourself in one.
Given you are inventing the dream for yourself how can you be surprised by it? Try making yourself jump by shouting 'boo!' - it just doesn't work.
Yes
How can dreams create surprising narrative twists? Yet they do
I can sometimes reach lucid dreaming states (not uncommon) where I am vaguely aware I am dreaming, and at best - much rarer - I can order the dream to go in a nice way. Flying or sex usually
However even in those dreams suddenly the dream will lurch in an entirely different direction which I didn’t intend and did not desire or will
So what part of my brain is doing that? The Freudian distinction between conscious and subconscious seems useful for this reason alone
"Well dreams, they feel real while we're in them, right? It's only when we wake up that we realize how things are actually strange. Let me ask you a question, you, you never really remember the beginning of a dream do you? You always wind up right in the middle of what's going on."

East Asia has got it sorted. Except they need more babies
This is my point about Reform UK and the language of 'saving Britain'. The tories can't be the ones that 'save britain', not at least for a few years, because they have been the ones running it in to the ground for the last 14 years.
I think the tide is slowly turning against the 'woke' though. My Corbyn supporting friend confessed to me that he was no longer sympathetic, he thought the "woke" just provoke the "anti-woke" and it goes around in circles like this, which I think is an increasingly common viewpoint, even amongst the commentators on this website. What no one will admit is that this is a reflection of the effectiveness of the "anti-woke".
Still trying to visualise why being offered a single free lunch of pizza margharita or dhal curry and rice infallibly ends in the collapse of Western civilisation.
To put it mildly I think it is fair to say he shouldn't be doing it!
By the way I don't know whether you saw the post I made a few days ago regarding you picking up the Labour candidate story in Rochdale before everyone else. It was a good spot.
On topic, sort of as I am only going to comment on the LD wins:
Tiverton - LD hold Somerton - LD hold Chesham - Depends on how they do during the campaign. In the balance Shropshire - Tory gain unless the LDs are having a really really good night.
Both Tiverton & Honiton and Somerton & Frome are being split apart. I feel like Tiverton & Minehead will be a Tory hold, Honiton & Sidmouth is hardly to call, maybe 50/50. Glastonbury & Somerton feels like a Lib Dem win as there's a big chunk of the old Wells constituency in there and Frome & East Somerset might be a Tory win unless Labour or Lib Dems decide to give on on the contest.
I agree re Glastonbury & Somerton, but think that the Conservatives will hold Tiverton & Minehead and Honiton & Sidmouth.
As in about 99% of cases of mob “justice” someone said he did something, which he hadn’t, which got the religious fascists fired up.
I find the spectacle of alleged progressives trying to “whatabout” the Right Kind of religious nutjobbery quite comic.
What’s the difference between this and the threats/violence against abortion clinics in the US? I can’t quite put my finger on it….
Better late than never but it should have been done years ago
Controls on holiday lets may or may not be a good idea but is it a Conservative policy or desperate, cones hotline-level brainstorming?
ETA how did we get here? The country's screwed every which way, nothing works, nothing can be built, everything costs too much and yet our political masters come up with holiday lets while Labour's big announcement is it will ban fox hunting (again).
Something
Another Brexiteer fleeing the country, you are the disgusting one.
Get out while you can. Serious advice
I’m loving it here, I was born here, I’ll never leave.
The deep poignancy of this remark is that you are in….. Manchester

This bit certainly makes it sound like the latter:
"The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities said councils would have the power to require planning permission for properties to be turned into short-term lets, if they deemed this necessary. Only new short-term lets would require planning permission, with existing ones automatically reclassified. "
I've nothing against some form of limited controls - requiring registration would be an obvious step, as would giving councils the power to restrict the operations of abusive or problematic landlords.
But this would appear to be giving councils the power to use the already-overwhelmed planning permission system to make things difficult for new landlords, whilst giving them no power over existing ones.
Better late than never but it should have been done years ago
One of the irritating things about this is that it was about 10 years ago that the government liberalised the rules allowing you to rent out your property as an airbnb for 90 days a year without planning permission - thus shifting the burden on to Council's to prove someone was renting out their flat for more than 90 days (not easy - how do you start to amass the evidence about this from an uncooperative owner?)
Still trying to visualise why being offered a single free lunch of pizza margharita or dhal curry and rice infallibly ends in the collapse of Western civilisation.
It doe#nt, but why should the preference of one group ‘vegans’ outweigh the preference of another ‘meat eaters’?

Same thing seems to apply here - properties let out for fewer than 90 days will still be exempt.
Ah well. What are the chances of it being implemented before the GE, anyway?
I think Rishi’s acting is pretty good here, and he will come over better than Sir Keir in the debates… but close your eyes and it’s Will from the Inbetweeners
We know how distracting mobile phones are in the classroom.
OT the first race at Taunton tomorrow is sponsored by a prep school. That's how you know you are at a posh school. Liz Truss's school never sponsored horse races or sent kids to Oxford or, oh, hold on.

Yes the law was on his side. There was just the matter of islamist thugs threatening to kill him. I'm not surprised you and all the other lefties on here won't take that seriously. Just as you won't take the awful rise in antisemitism seriously. In the past when asked where I am on the political spectrum I would tend to say left rather than right. But I've had enough now. I'm officially part of the non-aligned movement.
It has proved possible for left wing gender critical feminists to disagree with trans activists. But islamism? Nope, the left remains completely useless.
Tory MPs glued to their mobile phones on day ministers tell school kids to get off theirs

That scenario would be perfect for me. I would be able to eat the meaty sandwiches that would otherwise be going to waste, without being responsible for the demand for meat.
Next up: Murder to be made illegal? Cars to drive only one-way on one-way streets? Chocolate to be made of chocolate?
Good evening
My son who has three children 12,10 and 2 was discussing this yesterday and he is an IT professional
His two older children have mobile phones but he does control their use
However, he believes and supports Brianna Ghey's mother in seeking specific and restricted mobiles for children under 16 and absolutely believes they should not be used at school

The Badenoch show rumbles on with grim fascination in the Commons. She now says "full of lies" refers to three claims made by Henry Staunton, recent Post Office Chair.
1. That she didn't apologise to him for finding out about his sacking from a journalist. This should be easy to check: Is there an s apology in the transcript of the conversation that she is about to be made public? 2. That she told him "someone has to take the rap". The absence of of such a statement in the transcript doesn't necessarily mean she didn't say it. 3. That he was told to slow down compensation claims. She has no way of knowing whether anyone said this to him or not.
On her claim that he was sacked for misconduct, this appears to be allegations of bullying rather than an actual finding of misconduct. We should find out if she mentioned any of this in the transcript She had a long list of other complaints about him but these weren't misconduct.
It doesn't appear she's in a stronger legal position after her statement than before.
The polls are only going one way and I would venture to suggest Starmer's decision to scrap the 28 billion (£140 billion over 5 years) has been accepted as a wise decision and may indicate not everyone has a devotion to net zero
I see no way back for the conservatives and would prefer a May election but I just cannot see anything other than an Oct/ November one

You are probably right although I did see a snippet over the weekend that Rishi might favour cutting and running over endless leadership challenges over the summer, go out with some dignity. I think 2 May is his best option but don’t think he will do it.

Key principles of the Enlightenment included liberty, tolerance, fraternity, reason, equality, respect for others - all also things generally supported by those accused of being 'woke'.

It does sound a bit hit the law/hit the facts/hit the table, and Kemi B has moved on to stage 3.
Though given that she won't resign voluntarily, and Rishi is in far too weak a position to sack her unwillingly, it doesn't matter all that much.

The sudden concern re the lack of dentists .
It isn't a ban. It is non-binding "guidance". I've yet to be in a school which allowed use of mobile phones.

yes you can hardly call the lack of dentists a teething problem given the tories have years to do something .They are finished , its just a question of what emerges from it - can Reform take enough vote to be a contender . I hope so but not sure - maybe Labour will become a sensible non-woke party again but I doubt it with their professional student type MP list
Sir “Kid Starver & Genocide” has attracted all the votes of the hidden army of Jewish ex-Israeli military who are just waiting for the signal to rise up and kill all the curry shop owners?
Or have I got the racist conspiracy theories tangled up again, and it’s pizza shop owners?
Good to see we have finally settled on neat trigrammes - three letter codes. I’m slightly OC on such matters and LD and UKIP used to annoy me.
Just like 3 letter railway station codes. I will let others figure out if there is a match between political parties and stations with the same 3 letters.
On that theme, I was amused to see that Woolwich (Liz Line) is WWC. Clearly not an area big on diversity. Or poshness.
It would be good to see it all over with, but I still think Rishi will hang on until the last minute!
No, because to do so would mean an election campaign that spanned the Christmas holidays - and the fury of the electorate. Autumn most likely I think.
Are we going astronomical autumn?
The winter solstice is December 21 this year.
I guess so, my point was that it won’t be the last minute - which is in late Jan!!
The mobile ban in schools which is already possible as schools have that discretion and suddenly the caring for those locals who can’t get on the housing ladder in tourist areas .
The sudden concern re the lack of dentists .
yes you can hardly call the lack of dentists a teething problem given the tories have years to do something .They are finished , its just a question of what emerges from it - can Reform take enough vote to be a contender . I hope so but not sure - maybe Labour will become a sensible non-woke party again but I doubt it with their professional student type MP list

Yes but for the blue team, spanning the holidays is a feature, not a bug, because it negates the other parties' advantage in the ground game by clearing activists from the street. January 2025 is the Tories' best chance.

Good pun, intentional or otherwise
well the lack of dentists means the only appointment left is usually the dreaded 2.30 one

Understand your view but I fear Rishi has some misbegotten plan to give us all a ‘Christmas present’!

You are probably right although I did see a snippet over the weekend that Rishi might favour cutting and running over endless leadership challenges over the summer, go out with some dignity. I think 2 May is his best option but don’t think he will do it.
Hope you are recovering well, BTW.
Thank you and two weeks on from my pacemaker with another 6 before my next check but in the meantime must take care with my activities and absolutely no lifting or moving my left arm above my head
On the politics this feels like 1979 and 1997 and for the sake of the country it needs a GE asap

I’ll let the PB cliche go… but it also enrages the electorate, which probably eclipses the ground game factor

My local station's 3 letter code is also its actual name. There aren't many of those.
The split between Lab/LD/Green and Con/Ref is 62-34 with Deltapoll and 61-34 with Redfield & Wilton. Both polls would, if repeated, on General Election day, produce record breaking landslides for Labour, comparable to 1931 rather than either 1945 or 1997 and that's even before any tactical voting.
Elsewhere, an attempt to whip up a frenzy over a Liberal Democrat council election in candidate who is fighting a Ward which Labour won with 73% of the vote last time. Ridiculous given a much more disturbing incident concerning an LD Councillor in North Yorkshire who has rightly been suspended and will probably be expelled for anti-semitic comments.
The question now is whether Hunt will cave to Daily Mail pressure and try to instigate "big" tax cuts next month. The last attempt to try to bring in big tax cuts foundered and with (as we are told) demands on defence spending and local council spending as well as debt interest management, those thinking beyond the GE might well be asking Sunak and Hunt how the country can afford to cut taxes at this time.
Inevitably, some will say the country cannot afford not to cut taxes - that's a view but assuming the Laffer Curve will somehow sort everything out seems unwise given we have under employment and the aforementioned pressures on spending. It's not so much for Labour to say if they would support any tax cuts but for the Conservatives to say how they would pay for them and how they would support other calls on spending in the next Parliament if re-elected.

Something
That was an insightful header you wrote about "process".
Not directly linked but I have been working on a development with about 400 sqm of child play space. The play equipment is three metal poles with large areas of rubber around it on the ground. This is to comply with requirements for health and safety, as well as security requirements.
A monument to safetyism and absurdity.
Go on, have a go

East Asia has got it sorted. Except they need more babies

Either you accept this discrimination as inevitable and just one of those things, or you have to choose to do something to counter the effect and even things up.

In the case of the Life of Brian, the parallel would be if the Pope had issued a death sentence against John Cleese and Graham Chapman, then someone stabbed them, and the 'woke' brushed it under the carpet and suggested that they brought it on themselves.
(Although a trifle (ahem) flooded atm. I'd have needed Jesus-like capabilities to take my normal running route. Or to sit at the picnic bench...
By the way I don't know whether you saw the post I made a few days ago regarding you picking up the Labour candidate story in Rochdale before everyone else. It was a good spot.
Looks like the govt wants to make holidays in the UK more expensive. FFS, stop banning stuff and build more homes!
New controls on holiday lets to be introduced

I find the spectacle of alleged progressives trying to “whatabout” the Right Kind of religious nutjobbery quite comic.
What’s the difference between this and the threats/violence against abortion clinics in the US? I can’t quite put my finger on it….
ETA how did we get here? The country's screwed every which way, nothing works, nothing can be built, everything costs too much and yet our political masters come up with holiday lets while Labour's big announcement is it will ban fox hunting (again).
Ah well. What are the chances of it being implemented before the GE, anyway?
We know how distracting mobile phones are in the classroom.
Today we help schools put an end to this.

It has proved possible for left wing gender critical feminists to disagree with trans activists. But islamism? Nope, the left remains completely useless.

That you can't see that simply shows how unenlightened you are.
