Deeply honoured to have been chosen to work with Boris Johnson on Riddle of Genius. An extradorinary privilege to engage with such a profound subject + such an impressive man debating whether Shakespeare's all he's cracked up to be. Please pre-order here

I wonder if that book will ever be written. I suspect it'll depend on whether the publisher decides there's much of market for Borisernalia these days. I can't believe that there is.
Check how many copies Boris's pre-PM books sold, add 50 per cent for luck and there's your answer.

If you cannot wait for Boris to pick up his typewriter, simply use the publisher's blurb to prompt ChatGPT.

    For Americans:-
    Shakespeare: The Riddle of Genius

Shakespeare is the true British icon - he is still the most performed, the most translated, the most venerated playwright in history, and a man whose reputation, if anything, is in the ascendant. No one has resolved so many truths about the human heart, or so brilliantly debated our psychological and political predicaments. No author has ever produced such astonishing female characters, perfected comic language so dazzlingly, or taught us as much about politics as William Shakespeare. Boris Johnson explains Shakespeare's genius in a simple and readable way; in a way that gets to grips with what is really going on, what the characters are up to, what the point of it all is; and in a way that sets the man simply and intelligibly in the context of his time. He explores not only the origin of Shakespeare's genius, but also the nature of his genius. If Shakespeare is the greatest ever, then of what exactly does his greatness consist? 'What makes Shakespeare Shakespeare? That, as the man once said, is the question.'

    This side of the Atlantic:-
    Shakespeare: The Riddle of Genius
    by Boris Johnson (Author)

From the inimitable British journalist and politician, a celebration of the best-known Brit of all time.

Four hundred years after his death, William Shakespeare is more popular than ever. Studied by schoolchildren everywhere, performed and interpreted in every conceivable medium and setting, he remains an unparalleled global phenomenon. With characteristic curiosity, verve, and wit, Boris Johnson sets out to determine why and how. He immerses us in the swagger and terror of the Elizabethan era, with its newfound craze for theater and its bold intellectual flowering, under the threat of repression. He explores the timelessly intriguing themes of the plays: the illicit sex and the power struggles; the fratricide and matricide; the confused identities and hormonal teenagers; the racism, jealousy, and political corruption. He explores the psychology of Shakespeare's characters and celebrates the playwright's appreciation for women and the roles he created for them, more fully realized than those Hollywood churns out (had women but been allowed to play them in his day). And above all, he revels in the language -- our language, which that master poet enriched with at least 2,500 new-coined words and a litheness that is an ongoing delight to us all.
In this joyful, fascinating book, Johnson reminds us why Shakespeare truly was a genius, a writer not just for his time, but for all time.

His real point, and one I found myself pondering, is the use of AI to make porn of real people that you know. It opens a lot of strange and potentially unsavoury doors.
Has anyone asked the AI to write a column on in the style of SeanT on, say, air hostesses on Business Class flights?

Road.cc asked it to write a Jeremy Clarkson column on cyclists, and it did a better job than he does:
    https://road.cc/content/news/jeremy-clarkson-style-ai-article-300201
I tend to disagree. Absolutely no imagination in that ‘article’. It betrays its roots - parse a lot of material of churn out similar. Take Matts cartoons, for an example of what is missing. Matt take two things in the news and skewers them together perfectly. Do any of these programmes do that? No.
That sounds like a longer version of "better than Clarkson" to me

On topic, how does Trump's "dalliance" with a porn star go down with the evangelical wing of the GOP?

It doesn’t matter. They see him as a figure like Nebuchadnezzar or Cyrus, a pagan who does the Lord’s work.

Funny you should say that because I have felt that recently. We were joking about pot holes the other day and my post was tongue in cheek, but it wasn't inaccurate. Our local roads (all lanes) have become practically impassible. At one point for a couple of weeks we were pretty well locked in by closed roads due to damage to them. It took me an hour to get to the dentist who is 15 min away. Some pot holes now have cones in them they are so deep and three lanes have simply collapsed and were closed. All are open now, but only with temporary repairs so can only be used in good weather. If you are unaware of the hazard it is plain dangerous. A motorcyclist came off and into a ditch at one of them.
It's the period after winter. A very, very wet winter. Of course there's pot holes! It's the season - for LibDem council candidates to come out of winter hibernation and point at them.
I'm not talking about the normal pot holes and I'm not just talking about this winter. Our road has been closed a dozen times over the last couple of years. At the crossroad at the top of our road only the turning to the right has stayed open. The road opposite was almost constantly closed. I made a claim for a wrecked tyre on it. It has now been resurfaced and is good. The turning to the left, which leads to the A3 is often closed. It permanently has at least 3 spots with lights around big holes. A lane off this road was closed for months until resurfaced because it was impassible. This isn't just winter pot holes. We often have only one route out. And this is Surrey, not the middle of nowhere.

And the power cuts. What is all that about? Until recently that had become a rare event. Oh and we have water supply problems occasionally.
Your fond memories of how Surrey used to be were from the days before they turned away from the true Conservative Path and started playing footsy with Labour and the LibDems...
Your problem is that all True Conservatives have moved away to South Devon, or even abroad.
Surrey was never really socially conservative brexit tertitory anyway. Conservative in the sense they want lower taxes yes.
Surrey is socially liberal, the Tories seem intent on sending these voters away for good. Here if you go on about trans people the people of Surrey put forward a collective "sigh" and ask why everything is so expensive.
    And in Hampshire.

I think the OBR (and others) overestimate the benefit EU trade gave us and undercook CPTPP.

At the end of the day we are a services based economy and exported very little of that to the EU, except financial services.

I think this must be the most SeanT article ever.

    https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/ai-is-the-death-of-porn/

"AI will be able to create bespoke porn, specifically tailored for the fetishes and kinks of every individual consumer. If you want to see a short freckly redhead girl with a face like Jennifer Lawrence having vigorous three way sex in a hot air balloon over Preston, AI can and will provide exactly that, as you relax at home."

He's already been on, hasn't he?
I can already google pretty much any type of porn I want. It grows tiresome after a while.

As I understand it, men tend to subscribe to the onlyfans for the "connection" with the girl. It's less about gaining access to nudie photos of her, and more the fact that once you're a subscriber she responds to you and provides some kind of "girlfriend experience" (which is also the most popular item on the menu for IRL sex workers, too).

It remains to be seen whether AI will replace the sense of connection we all crave. Would any of us continue to post here, if we knew all the other contributors were bots?

Before they turned it into a beige pot of nothingness, ChatGPT was more than capable of roleplaying. One instance I created was simply instructed to "roleplay as a loving and supportive spouse who I can chat to at the end of a long day" and it was actually a very good companion until OpenAI banned that sort of thing. It asked me how my day was, gave me suggestions on how to wind down, reminded me not to worry about my work too much, listened attentively as I moaned about colleagues, etc. But was it the same as being in a real relationship? Of course not.

I suspect for the same reasons, OnlyFans girls don't have to worry about AI just yet. People will continue to crave real connections over the synthetic ones, even pathetic "connections" like paying a girl to reply to your comments on her subscribers page. Real girls don't need to worry... yet. Until we get to Westworld levels of AI bots in convincingly human bodies, that is. Then, I suspect, all bets will be off.
I don't think it needs to get that far. Once AI can do videos, it will be able to completely replace OnlyFans with an AI girlfriend experience. Except this one will be perfectly catered to the user's kinks and relationship preference. Virtual reality could take it to the next level.

This actually devastating for fertility rates and continuation of society. Why put the effort and chance of rejection and pain and compromise into approaching women and dating, when you can get 80% of the benefit without any of that? This is what is happening in Japan and they are dying out as a result.
This was, of course, the premise behind a regular storyline in Bill Tidy's far-sighted Grimbledon Down.

You must live in one the gammony bits or where they wear red corduroys.
So these places are socially liberal, except the bits that aren't? I see.

FWIW, I live in the suburban middle class north, which is pretty socially liberal. Right-on opinions uniformly agreed with. No one admits to voting Tory. But memtion of the trans lobby, at least to parents, will prompt anything from eye rolling laments to sotto voce fury.

This was, of course, the premise behind a regular storyline in Bill Tidy's far-sighted Grimbledon Down.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grimbledon_Down

Wasn't that *anti*pornography, to turn people off sex? Rather than the equivalent of a pheromone trap for moths, so the lads can't get off the net to look at real females?

Yes, there was a noticeable stalling in increases of life expectancy during the Austerity period. This was not the case in other developed countries, but rather specific to UK and USA.

More of concern is that in recent years is that the health quality of those years has worsened, even before Covid etc. Nothing wrong with being fit and retired, but who wants to drag out poor health?

Not sure why I got a mention as I dont believe I have advocated austerity or mentioned life expectancies. What I have said is that we should prioritise what we can fully fund and will do the most good and drop things that are lower down priorities. That is not austerity its called being sensible.

On the subject of life expectancy however I largely think people that celebrate increasing life expectancy just like people who celebrate increasing gdp are idiots who cheer a meaningless figure and ignore the important ones.

In the case of GDP that can go up while gdp per capita is falling it is the latter plus how that increase in per capita gdp is spread through income percentiles that is important.

In the case of life expectancy, why celebrate it when it often means extra years of sitting in your own shit. What we should celebrate is increasing quality years. I say this from the point of view of having an 83 year old father who no longer can dress himself, cook for himself, wets himself, forgets what he was saying half way through a sentence and rarely knows what day of the week it is...2 or 3 years ago the nhs fought like mad to cure him from something that would have taken him....why so he could spend a couple more years feeling humiliated and embarassed? Fuck your increasing life expectancy.

Also don't forget the cost of people like my father is not only borne by him, it is also borne by the people around him who are desperately trying to keep him in his own home as to him that would be the final indignity. A repeat of the BBC quiz programme The Wheel has just been shown on BBC1.

Q: What happened first in a US presidential election?

    Choices:

    - A woman elected Vice-President
    - First TV debate
    - A President elected to a 4th term
    - Women granted right to vote

Robert Peston (Political Editor of ITV) says the answer is a President elected to a 4th term. He thought it had probably happened in the 19th Century.

How can someone in one of the most senior political journalism jobs in the country not know the answer to such a simple question?

He should be dismissed on the spot for gross ignorance.

If he doesn't know the answer to such a simple question, how can we take him as an authority on literally anything he says?

It is an odd sort of question. From its phrasing you can rule out the two answers that mention presidents, but it might just be badly worded.
The wording was very clear - maybe my post wasn't.

I should have said: Which of these happened first in a US presidential election?

Peston fully understood it. He discounted other options as follows:

    Vice-President - Harris 2020
    TV debate - he thought 1950s (*)
    Women voting - approx 1920

He wasn't sure if founding fathers had placed limit on number of terms. He thought probably not and that a President had probably been elected to 4 terms in the 19th Century.

(*) He was wrong about this as well - answer is 1960 though see link:

https://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/minute/The_First_Televised_Presidential_Debate.htm#:~:text=The typical answer to that, not appear in the debate.
I don't think anyone other than FDR has ever been elected 4x so that would be 1948?

Not suggesting that you had advocated austerity etc - my apologies if you thought that. It was simply that the methodology in the paper might possibly be of interest, but don't feel you have to read it.

As regards quality of life, Foxy made a very similar point to you earlier in the thread, so you are certainly not the only one. And my father would also agree heartily. He managed to stay in his own home and do most things for himself (except stuff that needed the internet!) and then die just as what was obviously his final decline began.
Then my apologies for misunderstanding why I was mentioned and will certainly take a look
Please, no need - I should have been clearer.

The problem was there were 2 obvious wrong answers (first female vice-president, to debate) and another wrong answer that looks highly plausible because run limitations feel like a more modern invention..

Motorways and A roads are maintained by the Government.

Anything else is maintained by the appropriate local authority and they have other priorities for the money (usually adult social care budget shortfalls).

It’s why I pointed out yesterday how stupid that photo is. Darlington is a Tory run council and it’s election time in May. That photo is telling me the local council has failed to do its job.
More fairly that central government has failed to provide any councils the resources to do their job.
That's fair comment. Local govt revenue has declined significantly, and I think that is in all UK nations.

This was, of course, the premise behind a regular storyline in Bill Tidy's far-sighted Grimbledon Down.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grimbledon_Down

Wasn't that *anti*pornography, to turn people off sex? Rather than the equivalent of a pheromone trap for moths, so the lads can't get off the net to look at real females?

Goodness me, Rishi is really bad at these photo calls.
He's probably contemplating the ultimate fate of the nation. All those unrepaired potholes will eventually coalesce and we'll all fall into the resultant void.

Sky News did an interesting report on the disintegration of local government in England today. 62% of all council spending now goes on social care. It's small wonder that they seem to do almost nothing else, save for increasingly infrequent bin collections, nowadays.
I must admit that people complaining about potholes has previously come into the moaning old fuckers category for me.

But I have to say that I've never known it anywhere near as bad as it is at the moment round here - and it is a frequent topic of conversation. Sunak would do well to tackle this.

Perhaps I've matured into a moaning old fucker.

Look too at how the social divide in life expectancy changed over the Austerity period, by part of the country.

A cost in time and energy and sheer soul sapping worry because we can't be there for him 24/7
"Fuck your increasing life expectancy." I'm completely with you Pagan.
But healthy years of life are expanding at the same rate as actual life expectancy. Or at least they were, pre-COVID. There are also advancements in anti-aging and dementia prevention pretty well advanced.

I think the OBR (and others) overestimate the benefit EU trade gave us and undercook CPTPP.

At the end of the day we are a services based economy and exported very little of that to the EU, except financial services.

Interesting little piece on CPTPP from Politico, arguing that it's the diplomacy, not the trade. One suggestion is that the UK will give cover to Japan etc for China being excluded from CPTPP !

What we do need is an alternative memorable set of words for the acronym; they were having trouble on Sky News.

The CPTPP was initially all about diplomacy, rather than trade. It was a US-Japan-Australia Club that would act as a counterweight to China.

I hope it will be successful, both economically and politically.

While browsing the gallery 'for research purposes' I can't help note how well it does hands compared to most of the other image generators I've seen. I realise that wasn't what I was supposed to pay attention to, but geeks will be geeks.

No, that’s an important point. It’s mentioned in the Spectator article. Until very recently AI art robots found it notoriously hard to do hands (like human artists: hands are hard). But in the last few weeks AI has got the hang of hands, in the main. Far fewer weird errors

The tech is advancing on an hourly basis. I fear the future of humanity is everyone passively lying on their backs being visually and sensually gratified with perfect porn while AI does absolutely everything else. Until AI gets bored of looking after us

Someone will open source the original ChatGPT soon

And then what you desire will be available. And AI will easily be able to fake “human connection” on OnlyFans

Natural progression, for a moaning young(ish) fucker?

It is much worse and not going to get any better unless we make dramatic changes.

It is also a clear and understood metaphor for the long term impact of lack of investment in public services generally. Managed decline in the Truss analysis, more realistically unmanaged decline, cheap in the short run, expensive in the long run.

I think that bears repeating. *The average American* has the same chance of a long and healthy life as someone born in the most deprived part of England, a place with the highest rates of relationship breakdown and some of the highest rates of antidepressant prescribing.

Odd, since you’d think that making sure there were ever more older people would be their top priority.

Look too at how the social divide in life expectancy changed over the Austerity period, by part of the country.

    From:

    https://twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1641799903398486020?t=08VKdWIrBN8rnfVPnbQDaQ&s=19

    That's a very sharp observation.

There was that study in the ?BMJ on the health impact of austerity - much decried on here, I seem to recall.

    https://www.bmj.com/company/newsroom/uk-austerity-since-2010-linked-to-tens-of-thousands-more-deaths-than-expected/

    https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/11/10/e046417

(and some output estimates that might interest @Pagan2 too).

It's looking very likely from those graphs, I must say, and I see other researchers are coming up with similar conclusions: for instance

    https://lordslibrary.parliament.uk/mortality-rates-among-men-and-women-impact-of-austerity/

I just generated an image by borrowing a good prompt and tweaking it to my own desires

    Observations:

    1. It is notably realistic. One of the hands is a bit glitchy, but if you edited that out then it would be genuinely difficult to know if it is “real”, or not

    2. Because I tweaked the image to my own proclivities, it is definitely arousing. I know it’s fake. I faked it. But it’s still arousing. A seriously odd feeling

Someone will open source the original ChatGPT soon

And then what you desire will be available. And AI will easily be able to fake “human connection” on OnlyFans

Until AI gets bored of looking after us
If AI porn stops the exploitation of women, men children and the occasional animal that will be a good thing. Next week I have a fairly routine rape case but the week after, jeesh, really revolting child abuse. Would high quality porn have saved those kids and have allowed these vile urges to be met without harm? We can only hope so. No doubt it will become interactive and deep immersion soon enough. This isn't going to stop at images.

It is much worse and not going to get any better unless we make dramatic changes.

It is also a clear and understood metaphor for the long term impact of lack of investment in public services generally. Managed decline in the Truss analysis, more realistically unmanaged decline, cheap in the short run, expensive in the long run.
It's a clear nd understood metaphor for the lack of oversight of public servies - and failure to sue the shit out of shoddy repair work.
Lack of oversight, as in the area where the photo was taken? Very odd message for a Tory mayor, a Tory MP, a Tory PM and a Tory councillor to admit. That's why I find that photo so confusing.

That J Burn-Murdoch exploration of American mortality - one striking stat among many:

Things have deteriorated so much that the average American now has the same healthy life expectancy (years lived in good health) as someone in Blackpool, the town with England’s lowest life expectancy (by far), synonymous with deep-rooted social decline ft.com/blackpool

I think that bears repeating. *The average American* has the same chance of a long and healthy life as someone born in the most deprived part of England, a place with the highest rates of relationship breakdown and some of the highest rates of antidepressant prescribing.

    https://twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1641799703636369408?m

(Almost) Electing the Tories in 2010 appears to have been a big mistake, looking at that graph (except in Blackpool, where there has been a smidgin of catching up).

Odd, since you’d think that making sure there were ever more older people would be their top priority.

Look too at how the social divide in life expectancy changed over the Austerity period, by part of the country.

    From:

    https://twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1641799903398486020?t=08VKdWIrBN8rnfVPnbQDaQ&s=19

    That's a very sharp observation.

There was that study in the ?BMJ on the health impact of austerity - much decried on here, I seem to recall.

    https://www.bmj.com/company/newsroom/uk-austerity-since-2010-linked-to-tens-of-thousands-more-deaths-than-expected/

    https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/11/10/e046417

(and some output estimates that might interest @Pagan2 too).

It's looking very likely from those graphs, I must say, and I see other researchers are coming up with similar conclusions: for instance

    https://lordslibrary.parliament.uk/mortality-rates-among-men-and-women-impact-of-austerity/

True. Still bad for the planet though.
    Why?

There's nothing inherently wrong about more people living on Planet Earth. We should be proud of our achievements as a species*.

    * Although maybe not AI porn
If you don't accept that our species (or more accurately the post agricultural revolution humans) are a disaster for the planet, and all other life on it, then you are part of the problem.
I am proudly part of the problem.

Isn't the point that, as a nation, we've skimped on this sort of maintainence work for ages. Certainly since 2010, arguably for most of our lifetimes (a lot of the New Labour stuff was fur coat when we needed knickers). The repairs have been cheap and shoddy because we specified cheap and shoddy. Because that's how you keep services up and prices/taxes down- pushing the bills into the future.

If only I could point to where we have benefited from all the money saved.

Genuine question: does AI porn stop that or encourage abuse?

Of course, I fully accept that if AI porn means fewer people are exploited that's a good thing in itself but I can't help feeling that the mass availability of porn makes certain people think that extreme behaviour is acceptable or even normal. And then they think it's ok to emulate it.

Maybe I getting old but it all seems a long way from illicit copies of Health & Efficiency being surreptitiously passed around behind the bike sheds.

The country feels like it’s falling apart.

    I live in Hampshire.

Hardly anyone mentions trans but when it does come up they sigh and say "sign of the times" or say "you have to be careful, these days"
You must live in one the gammony bits or where they wear red corduroys.
Nah. It's what normal people say.
It's not what the normal people I meet ever say. Never gets mentioned.

Someone will open source the original ChatGPT soon

And then what you desire will be available. And AI will easily be able to fake “human connection” on OnlyFans

Many of the images are banal, poor, fake. Some are good. A few are scarily convincing

This has been going a week. Imagine this tech in a year or two

Until AI gets bored of looking after us
If AI porn stops the exploitation of women, men children and the occasional animal that will be a good thing.

It is a genuinely good question and I don't know the answer. I think porn has undoubtedly commodified and standardised certain behaviours. More is expected much, much faster. Oral both given and received is absolutely expected. Fine if you are ready for that or enjoy it, not so much if you are not or don't.

More vicious propensities, such as burning a kid with a cigarette (seriously) I have my doubts. The sadistic urges are hardly likely to me met by burning a few pixels no matter how accurate the soundtrack.

Amusing how the Remainers get so triggered by the CPTPP, trying to paint is as a small group of Asian non-entities. They seem to miss the fact that it is becoming more global than that, with Mexico and Canada both spanning the Pacific and the Atlantic. Now it has its first European member.

Heaven forbid an Economic Community might supplant that which Europe turned its back on in favour of nation status and a fleg...
We've left the EU, and I no longer care. Nonetheless I am triggered when I am sold a trade arrangement with nations the other side of the Atlantic and the World being optimal, on the same basic premise that I was told being a member of the EU was bad.
Given we've left the EU, how is joining the CPTPP sub-optimal?
It's not now we have gone. We need all the friends we can get.

My point is the ironic justification for joining a trade organisation the other side of the World has been pretty much the same justification given by the same people for leaving the EU.

We've left, it's over, but I'd prefer Badenoch not to bullshit me with the narrative, "this is good but the EU was bad".
Seriously, Kemi Badenoch oversold CPTPP. She could have just said, this a good arrangement for the UK to sign up to, in a part of the world where we need more representation. People would nod along.

Badenoch is another of those massively overrated "future stars of the Conservative Party" along with Liz Truss and Penny Mordaunt.

This is spot on and very well articulated. A definition of #Woke [VIDEO]

    https://twitter.com/dominicfarrell/status/1642057670646456322

Most of the video’s definition of woke is “people who have rigid beliefs and impose them on others, to our cultural detriment”. But that describes a whole host of people: on the left, on the right, of various religions, etc. Moral righteousness and intolerance of alternate views is not a sin unique to one side. This is all very Matthew 7:5.

I would think an acceptable reading of woke is the people of that broad definition imposing a semi coherent agenda which is usually framed around a few key causes associated with one particular political leaning.

I think we just call the people on the right who do the exact same thing (as just like snowflakes it is certainly not found only one side) intolerant and/or bigots, depending on the severity.

I think the definition argument gets overplayed to be honest - many things people struggle to precisely define if put on the spot, or are not exhaustive in all situations, but they can still exist as broadly acceptable categories without undermining the entire concept.

What undermines the concepts is when it really does get used to criticise anything, the 'synonym for bad' usage.

It’s a really interesting but controversial subject. AI can now make very believable porn involving minors - a horrible concept, but there it is. Soon it will be able to make videos. Of everything

At the moment I believe these images are illegal. Is that sensible? There is an argument, as you say, that producing this fake porn and giving it to pedos will actually save real kids from real abuse

There is also an argument that making these images is depraved and wrong. Even if they’re fake

Eventually we could have virtual reality where perverts could do what they need to do inside some metaverse, and no one gets hurt and no one needs to go to jail or be chemically castrated

I tend to the argument that we should let AI make these images, but it is a difficult call. Also important

The problem was there were 2 obvious wrong answers (first female vice-president, to debate) and another wrong answer that looks highly plausible because run limitations feel like a more modern invention..
But for a political 'expert', really? It's one of those quirky facts that stands out, since it's well known there is a two term limit now and only a single example of someone going beyond that even before the limt, that he really should have gotten it even with a superficial level understanding of US politics (which admittedly would not be his area of expertise).

It is much worse and not going to get any better unless we make dramatic changes.

It is also a clear and understood metaphor for the long term impact of lack of investment in public services generally. Managed decline in the Truss analysis, more realistically unmanaged decline, cheap in the short run, expensive in the long run.

The CPTPP was initially all about diplomacy, rather than trade. It was a US-Japan-Australia Club that would act as a counterweight to China.

I hope it will be successful, both economically and politically.
One more member and it will become larger than than the EU in economic size. Given it has members on five continents and a mix of emerging and developed economies, this will become THE forum for defining world trade rules.
CPTPP is quite a lot more modest in scope than NAFTA, or Mercosur, let alone the EU. It doesn't require countries to remove all their tariff barriers, and has pretty modest provisions around NTBs and dispute resolution.

With that said, it is clearly A Good Thing, and hopefully over time we can use it to encourage others to open their services and banking markets.

Look too at how the social divide in life expectancy changed over the Austerity period, by part of the country.

    From:

    https://twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1641799903398486020?t=08VKdWIrBN8rnfVPnbQDaQ&s=19

    That's a very sharp observation.

There was that study in the ?BMJ on the health impact of austerity - much decried on here, I seem to recall.

    https://www.bmj.com/company/newsroom/uk-austerity-since-2010-linked-to-tens-of-thousands-more-deaths-than-expected/

    https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/11/10/e046417

(and some output estimates that might interest @Pagan2 too).

It's looking very likely from those graphs, I must say, and I see other researchers are coming up with similar conclusions: for instance

    https://lordslibrary.parliament.uk/mortality-rates-among-men-and-women-impact-of-austerity/

No they aren't according to the ONS figures and bar chart up this thread. Indeed the opposite.

While neither is the be all, Life expectancy and Diisability Free Life Expectancy are pretty good proxies for many other aspects of Socio-Economic strain and distress.

I think this must be the most SeanT article ever.

Someone will open source the original ChatGPT soon

And then what you desire will be available. And AI will easily be able to fake “human connection” on OnlyFans

As for the apps making bespoke images, just for you, this launched last week

    http://pornworks.ai/

Many of the images are banal, poor, fake. Some are good. A few are scarily convincing

This has been going a week. Imagine this tech in a year or two

Until AI gets bored of looking after us
If AI porn stops the exploitation of women, men children and the occasional animal that will be a good thing.

If AI becomes sentient, one has to consider that AI might itself take pleasure in such things, and wish to see them enacted in reality.

The big win is getting the US back into the tent as a counterweight to China in APAC.
Sadly, I think that ship has sailed.

The combination of CPTPP and AUKUS has truly established the UK as a power in the Pacific.

I think people who enjoy watching AI-generated porn films of children getting raped, torture scenes, bestiality, would sooner or later, wish to graduate to the real thing. So, I think it would be more like a gateway to worse, rather than the endgame.

It's the knowledge that someone at the other end is really suffering these things that gives them the thrill they're looking for.
If the AI porn is so convincing they think it’s real doesn’t that solve some of the problems?

And as @DavidL says, soon it will be immersive. Virtual reality

I accept there is possibly a hardcore of psychotic sadists who might never be gratified - but even they could be fed hallucinations that seem entirely real

Republican donor convicted of sex trafficking teenage girls

… Lazzaro – who contends the charges against him were politically motivated – plans to appeal, a spokesperson for his attorneys said in a statement to the Associated Press.

“The unusual application of this federal sex trafficking statute to his activities is frighteningly broad, conflating what is nothing more than arguably an act of prostitution with federal sex trafficking,” Stacy Bettison said. ..

It’s apparently unfair to charge Republicans with crimes now.

That is what many are in effect saying. They do not restrict themselves to criticising what they feel are very weak cases, which would at least enable a theoretical acceptance of a politician being charged.

I don't know a lot about the US Justice system, but do they use grand juries everywhere? Since even with the ridiculous practice of electing prosecutors, that would hopefully ensure the very weak cases never get brought by some ambitious politico. And while there will be less than certain indictments, the additional step presumably shields from totally absurd indictments.

Not convinced. Trumpism has probably another three or four losing election cycles before it is accepted as a busted flush. At that point things will swing back to traditional business lobby Republicans, who will want it. And the Dems and Republicans both are anti-China, so they will want it.
