Does anyone know the average salaries and likely career prospects of junior doctors?
~£35k for juniors. Once they've done their training they're at ~£50k, once they've specialised anywhere from £80k-£150k. From graduation to specialism takes about 8-10 years.
Not feeling too sorry for them I have to say.
A doctor friend, when asked what he makes in a year, inevitably responds "My base salary is x". A careful choice of words.
What proportion of doctors only earn the base? Relatively few, I would think.
Yes, relatively few but that is because they work shifts, cover weekends, spend time on call etc. None of which enhances your quality of living.
Of course - it would just be nice to have the discussion with the real numbers.

The BBC website had a nice graphic this morning. Basically, they advance through the pay scale to £60k plus without breaking sweat.
Become a Consultant, and it's wheelbarrow full of cash time.
"Without breaking sweat" - you should see the state of my gf after a set of night shifts. And I get paid more for messing about in excel.
The fact is that they've had massive real terms cuts in salaries since 2008 (like lots of other people in their early careers), even more so when you consider the cost of rent. Then there's the extra debt they take on compared with other grads, and their patients whining about them striking...

They knew the deal when they signed up. Shift work doesn't come as a shock; they weren't expecting a 9-5 desk job when they applied to Med School.
Biden says to Sunak: "First of all, I want to welcome you back to California. He's a Stanford man, and he still has a home here in California. That's why I'm being very nice to you, maybe you can invite me to your home in California."
What the utter fuck - doesn't the Commons get a vote on whether we piss the defence increases away on new nuclear subs?
They are a valuable investment for our own national security and to control China and Russia with the US, Australia, Japan, South Korea and our NATO allies

I used the expression to highlight that progression through the pay grades is the natural order of things, rather than an arduous process.
And anyone starting Med School 5 or 6 years ago did so on the basis of pay rates then, not in 2008.
As you indicate, other career options were available, but perhaps offering reduced opportunities for their parents to boast to the neighbours.
Well I suppose it's only fair. Given that in recent years Labour, the Tories and the LibDems have made spectacularly bad leadership choices, it would be churlish if the SNP were to buck the trend.

At least Conservative MPs can remove a leader by VONC if the members elect a dud though. Labour, LD and SNP MPs and MSPs can't remove a leader unless their members agree however or at least until the voters as a whole give them a big thumbs down
It's a gamble because if they cannot deliver they might suffer the consequences of that (though that has not panned out thus far), but the political justification for the move always made sense.
That’s interesting - it implies 2019 Tory voters so, in other words, their absolute best case scenario. Some decent movement for them with a yucky policy. Maybe Lineker helped its reach…..
He definitely won’t have a back catalogue criticising the scale of Blair/Boris Force One will he? That would be hypocritical.
I recall when the hacks first got to see the “x rows of seats in a tanker” conversion. They went straight from complaining it was a luxury personal transport on the taxpayer, to complaining it wasn’t posh enough for them. Without missing a beat.

I for one will not be satisfied until our politicians travel everywhere barefoot in sackcloth and ashes, or at least engaging in self flagellation if using anything grander (but only if they do not enjoy that).
You’re right. It might be the 321. Point still stands.
Do we need Father Ted in?
Remember when Professor Peston didn't know how a mirror worked?
The Australian plane is an adapted A330 I think, so it is a bit bigger, but it isn't exactly an A380.
Yup. Looking at it they did exactly what we did and converted the tanker/lift A330, keeping the refuelling role when needed. We happen to also have a 321 which Sunak may have brought this time. But it would be too much to hope a journalist would use google or ask someone present when he can demonstrate his lack of research instead.
Yes the Illegal Immigration Bill which passed tonight is unpopular with most Londoners but popular in the Redwall and in Leave voting areas. Labour already won the former even in 2019, it is the latter however where the key swing seats are that will decide the next general election and Sunak set a trap for Starmer by forcing him to oppose the Bill

You can see Sunak leaving the 321 in the news footage earlier today.

Travel?! Politicians?! Nah. They must simultaneously never travel AND take abuse for being out of touch in a Whitehall bubble.

The VIP part is ok, the standard class pretty basic:

It's a hellscape, no question.
I’ve long thought the worst bit about going to hell will be that the journey is on Ryanair.

The problem is combining that with the grape peeling servants and infinite booze that is a requirement for the Third Estate. Apparently.

Only half way. Then you wait at Luton for 10,000 years for EasyJet.
Someone needs to tell Peston size isn't everything (but his wife has probably been telling him that for years)
Kudos to Rishi for going so far in a Cessna
As the good Prof himself puts it,
Just to be clear, this is not a distance/perpective thing, for those of you having fun with that notion. The PM has gone down at least two sizes since Voyager

The huge plane on the left is the Australian PM’s. The little one on the right is the UK PM’s

Tories got an 80 seat majority on 43.6% of the total vote.
Before favourable boundary changes.
The country don't need to give "over half" support.
