If you include Edward VIII then Edgar Atheling should be as neither was crowned.

Isabel Hardman on what today may really be about:
"Perhaps the PM is wrong to push ahead with the plans he’s announcing today, but at least for once he is showing a bit of media aggression. If he’s able to replicate this with other policies, it will be another reason to be cheerful for the Conservative party, regardless of the details of today’s announcement."

Detriot News Editorial: - sounds like they had too much Miliband/Balls style deficit denial.
http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130722/OPINION01/307220006/
"Detroit’s experience also teaches the value of confronting problems early instead of deferring them to the crisis point. Detroit has known for at least 25 years that it was headed toward a meltdown of its pension system.
But instead of adjusting benefits and increasing payments into the system, the city kept borrowing money from the funds and refused to make rational benefits reforms"
"Detroit also lost focus on its core mission, which should have been providing essential services to its residents. The city saw itself as a jobs provider, bloating its payroll and providing services in-house that could have been easily outsourced."
A government that focuses on serving its taxpayers first is less likely to lose its tax base. Detroit learned that the hard way. The key lessons Detroit’s situation can teach other governments is to borrow with extreme care and don’t make promises you can’t keep."

The productive citizens of Detroit left a while ago. The public sector employees and retirees are going to learn the hard way that they got what they voted for (51 years of one party lefty corruption and unions in charge). And, as ever in America, race is the unspoken issue bubbling away underneath Detroit’s astonishing collapse. It used to be a successful white working class city with the highest wages in the USA. It is now a black public sector sewer. The 1967 riots (triggered by blacks vs a very white and harsh police force) were devastating and caused the start of white flight, lefty hegemony and endless deficits. That is a statement of fact – blame I leave to others. I expect tim will find a way to blame Maggie or Dave.
Any future for Detroit (and I’m personally not really sure there is one) will somehow need to deal with the race issue as well as the financial ones – so an absolute stinker of a problem for someone to have a go at. How do you persuade colour blind businesses back into a simmering black war zone where even the police advise you not to come (check out Detroit’s crime stats, literacy rates, etc)?

BTW, people who have been demanding that Labour produce some policies, can you see the problem now? They won't announce policies unless they sound good to the media, and policies that sound good to the media are very likely to be bad in practice, or they'd already have been done. So if you want Labour to announce policies you're asking them to announce things that sound good but work badly, and to make matters worse since they're popular the current government will nick them, so you end up enacting the worst policies that Labour can dream up, immediately, and there's nothing the voters can do about it.0 -
Detroit could spark a domino effect. Chicago and LA have similar huge liabilities, according to news reports.
Its all the fault of white working people, according to the Guardian.
They have moved out instead of staying to be taxed, insulted, mugged, burgled and murdered.

Matt Yglesias's solution is to let in immigrants who wouldn't otherwise be allowed to work in the US, on the condition that they live in Detroit for a few years.Slackbladder said:

Any future for Detroit (and I’m personally not really sure there is one) will somehow need to deal with the race issue as well as the financial ones – so an absolute stinker of a problem for someone to have a go at. How do you persuade colour blind businesses back into a simmering black war zone where even the police advise you not to come (check out Detroit’s crime stats, literacy rates, etc)?
We're in global competition. Detroit couldn't even cope on a national level.

I give up,which ever party was in government they would be doing exactly the same.
BTW, people who have been demanding that Labour produce some policies, can you see the problem now? They won't announce policies unless they sound good to the media, and policies that sound good to the media are very likely to be bad in practice, or they'd already have been done. So if you want Labour to announce policies you're asking them to announce things that sound good but work badly, and to make matters worse since they're popular the current government will nick them, so you end up enacting the worst policies that Labour can dream up, immediately, and there's nothing the voters can do about it.

I can't imagine Chicago or LA would be following Detroit anytime soon. I was in Detroit briefly in 2006 and its one weird city with a small central zone of activity and a ring of poverty. The rest of Michigan is nice however and I would guess a lot of economic activity that used to take place in Detroit has simply moved elsewhere in Michigan.
Chicago on the other hand has plenty of economic activity going on inside of it and so will be able to support its liabilities for alot longer.

In a functioning economy where you have the ability for increased investment, then maybe this might work...but you already have huge levels of unemployment.. so clearly there is no demand for labour there already.
Just because there's a economy theory of it, doesn't mean it is right in all areas and all places.0 -

Disagree, put four ambitious, self-starting people together somewhere with property rights and rudimentary rule of law and they'll create an economy.Slackbladder said:

Has the POTUS ever read Orwell's 1984?
In October of 2012, President Barack Obama triumphantly declared he “refused to throw in the towel” and “let Detroit go bankrupt.”
In January 2009, the president signed an executive order to close the U.S. prison camp. But four years later, the prison remains open.0 -
