Ben Carson is closing in on Donald Trump in New Hampshire, according to a new poll out Wednesday, just hours before the candidates will face off against each other in the second Republican primary debate.

    Nate Silver's point is that, historically, polling in September has virtually no predictive value for the outcome of the nomination races. He also underscores the huge in-built advantages of the Establishment candidates (essentially Bush and Clinton in this cycle) over the long haul of the nomination process, although this advantage, while huge, is no guarantee. Just ask Hillary (2008)

    Blimey, just been reading about Carson. For a medical man, he is remarkably stupid. How he is able to just ignore scientific fact because of his 'faith' is, quite frankly, scary.

    Not someone I would ever want to see hold any power.

    But 538 (Nate Silver's blog site) ran a long article about why Trump was stupid to pick a fight with Fox news after the first debate because Trump would never win that fight........five days later Ailes threw in the towel, refused to back his presenters and Trump had another victory under his belt.

    That's not saying that Nate Silver's site is wrong with his analysis, just that the record with regard to Trump is not good.

    But for a man with a scientific background to be a denier of evolution is deeply scary - as is his linking of marriage equality with bestiality.

    I certainly think Carson is a good bet to take one of Iowa or NH but he does not have the money or name recognition or political experience to go all the way. Trump remains frontrunner for the GOP nomination but he also has a very colourful past which could come back to haunt him at any time

    Thanks for the reply! I've read the entry you're talking about and yes the evolution statement is a bit off-putting. I'm more concerned about his flip-flopping on issues though. Anyone who keeps apologising for things he believes in is useless.

    I will be watching the debate tonight, from the sounds of it Trump will attack Fiorina as a useless and corrupt CEO that destroyed the companies she worked for, while Fiorina will attack Trump as a sexist b@stard along with the CNN moderators.

    As for that WBUR New Hampshire poll, they have never done a poll before so we can't compare it with anything.

    OK, so I have now watched PMQs. JC did well for a first outing, and it wasn't just him reading out the questions he had been sent (mine didn't get picked - and it wasn't the one about Social Democracy and Democratic Socialism either!).

    Next up - conference. Maybe we will see some theatrical walk-outs or tearing up of party membership cards by the Blairite residue.

    As an aside, will the BBC bother to cover the Lib Dem conference this year? It ought not get much more coverage than the Greens get together.

    The policy seems to now be "If I don't like Cameron's renegotiation [he won't] then I need to campaign to stay in Europe so that I can go back to Europe if I win and renegotiate again to change what Cameron negotiated and negotiate a different deal." Tortuous, much?

    Jeremy Corbyn’s economic policies would “hurt” the poor and elderly and “imperil” Britain's economic recovery, the Bank of England governor has suggested.

    Mark Carney indicated that said that the plans put forward by the new Labour leader and John McDonnell would increase inflation and could in turn hit the economy.

    The comments, made during an appearance at the Treasury select committee, will further undermine Mr Corbyn’s economic credentials.

    I was gobsmacked at just how uncomfortable he looked in that bit. At times he looked genuinely quite unsettled by the whole thing.

    After yesterday's headlines, Im dumbfounded that he hadn't got some pre-prepared line on the monarchy. Something along the lines of: "I obviously hold personal views and I do find the concept of hereditary position rather archaic, however I appreciate a lot of people in the country feel differently. I don't want my personal views to get in the way of the big issues that I want to bring up as leader of the opposition, and I will out of respect for my role as leader of the opposition abide by the traditions of our current system." Ok, it's a bit blustery and maybe a bit disingenuous, but that would be an answer that would close things down a bit more.

    As it is, he looks shifty, evasive and reinforces all the negative perceptions.

    Yet again, this theory about a new SDP-style party is undone by the fact there quite clearly isn't the public demand for one - as shown by the fact that the most centrist party just got its worst result in 45 years at this year's general election, and the fact no-one was enthused enough to sign up for the SDP-style candidate in the Labour leadership contest even with votes onsale for just £3.

    Indeed Reachtel had a voting intention poll out in Australia today measuring reaction to Abbott's ousting and Turnbull only became leader on Monday, Corbyn was elected on Saturday
