politicalbetting.com » Blog Archive » Ahead of tonight’s GOP debate Ben Carson moves to within 4 points of Trump in New Hampshire
Ben Carson is closing in on Donald Trump in New Hampshire, according to a new poll out Wednesday, just hours before the candidates will face off against each other in the second Republican primary debate.
Nate Silver's point is that, historically, polling in September has virtually no predictive value for the outcome of the nomination races. He also underscores the huge in-built advantages of the Establishment candidates (essentially Bush and Clinton in this cycle) over the long haul of the nomination process, although this advantage, while huge, is no guarantee. Just ask Hillary (2008)
Blimey, just been reading about Carson. For a medical man, he is remarkably stupid. How he is able to just ignore scientific fact because of his 'faith' is, quite frankly, scary.
Not someone I would ever want to see hold any power.
Fox News very influential on race. They like Carson but when push comes to shove will probably get behind Bush. The more leftish channels Bloomberg and NBC like Kasich.
But 538 (Nate Silver's blog site) ran a long article about why Trump was stupid to pick a fight with Fox news after the first debate because Trump would never win that fight........five days later Ailes threw in the towel, refused to back his presenters and Trump had another victory under his belt.
That's not saying that Nate Silver's site is wrong with his analysis, just that the record with regard to Trump is not good.
"Speaking to the BBC's political editor Laura Kuenssberg later on Wednesday, Mr Corbyn insisted he would not campaign for the UK to leave the European Union, while vowing to fight any moves towards a more free-market relationship."

What have you read which leads you to this? Any useful links please?
(a perfectly genuine question - I quite liked what little I knew about him but haven't read around the candidate at all)

Only his Wiki entry (which, of course, may not be entirely without bias)
But for a man with a scientific background to be a denier of evolution is deeply scary - as is his linking of marriage equality with bestiality.

Greetings Pete, but can you please clarify whether you are really an ex-pat or an immigrant?

I certainly think Carson is a good bet to take one of Iowa or NH but he does not have the money or name recognition or political experience to go all the way. Trump remains frontrunner for the GOP nomination but he also has a very colourful past which could come back to haunt him at any time

Thanks for the reply! I've read the entry you're talking about and yes the evolution statement is a bit off-putting. I'm more concerned about his flip-flopping on issues though. Anyone who keeps apologising for things he believes in is useless.
I will be watching the debate tonight, from the sounds of it Trump will attack Fiorina as a useless and corrupt CEO that destroyed the companies she worked for, while Fiorina will attack Trump as a sexist b@stard along with the CNN moderators.
As for that WBUR New Hampshire poll, they have never done a poll before so we can't compare it with anything.

Uh, Corbyn should keep himself away from the Tsipras rhetoric of "we have no alternative we have to stay and hope for the best", no one ,however a party fanatic, will ever support that.
"Speaking to the BBC's political editor Laura Kuenssberg later on Wednesday, Mr Corbyn insisted he would not campaign for the UK to leave the European Union, while vowing to fight any moves towards a more free-market relationship."
Corbin did steady the ship slightly with his PMQs approach today (though it will wear thin if he carries on in the same vein). However, the ship continues to spring more and more leaks every day...
OK, so I have now watched PMQs. JC did well for a first outing, and it wasn't just him reading out the questions he had been sent (mine didn't get picked - and it wasn't the one about Social Democracy and Democratic Socialism either!).
Next up - conference. Maybe we will see some theatrical walk-outs or tearing up of party membership cards by the Blairite residue.
As an aside, will the BBC bother to cover the Lib Dem conference this year? It ought not get much more coverage than the Greens get together.
"Speaking to the BBC's political editor Laura Kuenssberg later on Wednesday, Mr Corbyn insisted he would not campaign for the UK to leave the European Union, while vowing to fight any moves towards a more free-market relationship."
There is no reason to believe there will ever be a social Europe like Corbyn hopes for.
The policy seems to now be "If I don't like Cameron's renegotiation [he won't] then I need to campaign to stay in Europe so that I can go back to Europe if I win and renegotiate again to change what Cameron negotiated and negotiate a different deal." Tortuous, much?
If Corbyn achieved anything ... PMQ's was deadly boring, Corbyn droned on trying to play man of the people.
FWIW Corbyn is a condemned man, out of his own mouth and by his actions. He is on political death row. What he achieved today was a stay of execution/.
1. Jezza is a charmless git (interview with Laura K). 2. To be fair to the Beeb, they included the DUP question/statement. 3. It struck me that, given how politicians in office (even in opposition) age dramatically (GO excepted), what on earth will Jezza look like in a year's time?
Jeremy Corbyn’s economic policies would “hurt” the poor and elderly and “imperil” Britain's economic recovery, the Bank of England governor has suggested.
Mark Carney indicated that said that the plans put forward by the new Labour leader and John McDonnell would increase inflation and could in turn hit the economy.
The comments, made during an appearance at the Treasury select committee, will further undermine Mr Corbyn’s economic credentials.
That was a very uncomfortable interview that Corbyn did, the awkwardness oozed out especially of the privy council.
It just points out the utterly undemocratic nature of the United Kingdom. If being a democrat prevents you from any office of state, the country needs reformed.
The Oath of Allegiance and membership of the Privy Council need abolished,
The Scottish secretary will use a keynote speech marking the first anniversary of the referendum to launch a scathing attack on the first minister’s enthusiasm for another vote on independence.
Mr Mundell, who will be speaking at the University of Edinburgh, will mock assurances that the poll was a once-in-a-lifetime event and state: “The sovereign will of the Scottish people is set aside as though it counted for nothing and the first minister openly acknowledges that she’ll try to hold a second referendum just as soon as she thinks she has a chance of winning it.
“It is as though the votes of two million Scots can just be set aside as an unfortunate but peripheral setback on the road to independence.”
Trouble for Corbyn is that instead of looking lovably avuncular in that interview, he looks shifty, doddery, mildly disloyal - and, worst of all, plain stupid.
@theobertram: There were parts of that interview where all you could hear is the rain. And even the rain felt awkward.

Personall, I think he is just a thicko. A well meaning thicko who thinks he is doing "the right thing" like thicko lefties usually do.
Ewww The Times are reporting Jeremy Corbyn and Diane Abbott were lovers in the late 70s
Bit of a ladies man isn't he!
They must be blind - or desperate.
His 3rd wife is quite a stunner (awaits brickbats!) and dresses smartly. He must have something going for him!
Well, on a serious note, yes he must have. The most stunning women often have the most unlikely and rather odd/plain looking partners. Mind you, a sense of humour, charm, kindness and oodles of sex appeal go a long way.

I was gobsmacked at just how uncomfortable he looked in that bit. At times he looked genuinely quite unsettled by the whole thing.
After yesterday's headlines, Im dumbfounded that he hadn't got some pre-prepared line on the monarchy. Something along the lines of: "I obviously hold personal views and I do find the concept of hereditary position rather archaic, however I appreciate a lot of people in the country feel differently. I don't want my personal views to get in the way of the big issues that I want to bring up as leader of the opposition, and I will out of respect for my role as leader of the opposition abide by the traditions of our current system." Ok, it's a bit blustery and maybe a bit disingenuous, but that would be an answer that would close things down a bit more.
As it is, he looks shifty, evasive and reinforces all the negative perceptions.

So that's 2 of the 3 hard lefties in the cabinet.... menage?
Elsewhere Polly is once again off and retweeting anything to support someone who she surely had no belief in at all - what is it about guardianistas and their moral compass?
Whose the repugnant red Tory tycoon threatening the increasingly impressive JC who is a shoo-in to stay to 2020 I would not suggest surely.

Yet again, this theory about a new SDP-style party is undone by the fact there quite clearly isn't the public demand for one - as shown by the fact that the most centrist party just got its worst result in 45 years at this year's general election, and the fact no-one was enthused enough to sign up for the SDP-style candidate in the Labour leadership contest even with votes onsale for just £3.
Why would the Times commission a poll but NOT include a proper voting intention question?!?
YouGov. Would you trust it? I wouldn't.
Even if nothing else, polls would still be useful to monitor trends and see if any particular event causes a strong reaction.
Indeed Reachtel had a voting intention poll out in Australia today measuring reaction to Abbott's ousting and Turnbull only became leader on Monday, Corbyn was elected on Saturday
Jeremy Corbyn faces questions over his failure to intervene in a damaging party dispute involving Diane Abbott after it emerged that the two are former lovers.
Details of their past relationship were revealed yesterday after Mr Corbyn was criticised for failing to step in when his shadow international development secretary verbally attacked a female MP who questioned his commitment to sexual equality.

I will in no way make any smutty innuendos about this in any upcoming thread headers.
