Illegal immigrants have now gained access to terminal and have breached security
Immigrants, or striking protestors?
Sky are reporting that the latter have invaded the Eurostar terminal.
Sky never wrong for long
Probably or possibly it's an utter mess looking at the TV pics. It was apparently "a no notice strike "which made the problem much worse over a short space of time.
Trains in transit have been stopped and will all return to place of departure ---SKY news.

Notice board here suggests strikers on the line.
Makes more sense than illegals. But less exciting for the usual suspects here.
Mates on the gates, let their striking brothers through security. 'MyFerryLink' was owned by Eurotunnel until 10 days ago, so there are obvious 'sympathies' between the two sets of employees.
Finding titles is the worst bit of writing an article.
That's why publications employ sub editors... the "Talent" can't think up headlines as well as write articles, poor dears. Oh, and they generally can't spell either!
Fortunately I've got a good title for the next post I'm working on.
So long as it isn't Europe: The Final Countdown for the UK's membership of the EU?
I'm happy
Can we have an Outer thread?
The EU: It Means Nothing To Me.
Of course
Presumably to be paired with a Europhile thread: EU to me are everything.
Looks like the strikers got round police diverted by immigrants:
Eurostar passengers were today facing chaos as all services were cancelled after protesters got into its terminal in France.
Journeys to Britain were aborted as wildcat strikes by French ferry workers spilled over from Calais.
The workers entered the Eurotunnel terminal hours after riot police were called in to try to hold back hundreds of UK-bound migrants who were trying to get to Dover during the chaotic strikes.

Yes indeed. Actually if you look at the pictures you can understand where the confusion is coming from though. Sky reported the incident as migrants but either way a mess.
Just wondering given your "usual suspect" comment. if you think it's right they should be there trying to enter illegally or even if it's wrong we should criticise the French for not stopping them breaking into lorries and attacking drivers?
If that's the case better then you also count me in to the " usual suspect " group I guess

Immigrants in channel tunnel hence Eurostar cancel all servies for today
Eurostar say cancel journey next two days if not important or find another route.
Latest reports also indicate cross channel Ferries service is suspended in Calais
bad news I am stuck waiting to board. No info here have to rely on pb for news.
Sorry to hear that. Find another route as all services are cancelled at the moment for today.
That came from Eurostar and was reported via Sky news.
Might not have much luck on the ferries either by the sounds of it.
They are still checking cars in to the terminal but no news here. Calais port is closed so no ferries,we only just missed the last train and are first for when they resume ,not sure if my insurance covers me,may have to cancel the whole trip.
Even though I don't buy this bs about centrists being what Labour needs in general, my instinct would be that Tessa is the best candidate for this simply because she'll remind people of the Olympics - and who wouldn't want to be reminded of the Olympics?
Quite so. A success story that a Labour candidate can legitimately claim to be associated with. It has a genuine novelty factor.
Remind me again, what did her bid say it would all cost?
blackburn63 Since when did not being very bright prevent someone winning an election, George W Bush being a case in point, Campbell has had a successful career as a footballer and represented his country and built a successful property business after as well as raising money for charity and the arts, how much have Khan, Zac and Jowell done in the real world?

Insanely off-topic, but I've just across these absolutely stunning fire insurance maps from the late 19th century - every single building drawn with an indication of what it was used for, method of construction, height, windows, etc. Here's the 1886 sheet for part of the area north of Fleet Street:

Oh that's really bad really sorry to hear that and just what you don't need.
If you are first train might be worth sitting it out though. Suffice to. Say the one you just missed probably never made it anyway and would have been turned back? Not that will make you feel any better
Not sure what to suggest.... It will take today to sort out so dig in and wait I would have thought and make sure you stock up on drinks and sarnies at the terminal before the lorry drivers get there

George Bush flew jet fighter planes.
Indeed, he had a better academic record than Al Gore, whose intelligence no-one seems to impugn.
Good to see some of the Tories on here see that Sol Campbell would be a complete and utter disaster as a candidate for them.
@HYUFD - being not very bright prevents Campbell from winning an election because:
(a. He's not self-aware. Politicians need to be self-aware. (b. He cannot connect, nor is inclined to understand his electorate. He's a man who entered for politics purely for his own self-interest. There is no way in hell he should even be considering a role where he has to think about the desires of others. (c. There are better candidates than who'll make him look like a fool. (d. He's a divisive character. (e. He'll blame everything not going his way on racism.
Zac Goldsmith, from what I understand is a fantastic constituency MP, and at the very least appears to care about making society a better place. I doubt Sol Campbell really cares about that, tbh.
Deputy mayor of Calais: situation in Calais is responsibility of the UK.
I'm trying to think of a possible way that statement could be correct. I really can't.
They are foreign citizens on foreign soil, FFS.
Take it as a compliment. He's saying it's our fault our country isn't as unattractive as France.
France is lovely though ! I mean it has the French, but the weather is far better there, and the population density is alot lower (So long as you are outside central Paris, and maybe Marseille). Full of chateaux and vineyards and decent roads.

The problem with France is that it is full of French people.

Would they like British troops to take over Calais again?
We should suggest that the perfect remedy is that they are all bussed down to the Spanish border and released.
We could send over a few Megabuses to help (at very reasonable rates). Although travelling by Megabus is only slightly worse than spending 12 hours in the back of trailer with 40 other unwashed 'friends'.

Surely most of those points also apply to Sadiq Khan.

I don't know too much about Khan, so I'll not argue against that point. The two candidates I'd like to see become Mayor or London, are either Jowell or Goldsmith.
Mr. Eagles, must confess, such vulgarly modern areas aren't my strong point.
But my main point still stands. If the French are incapable of self-governance and wish for us to resume our role of leadership in Calais, Normandy, Gascony and many other parts of France, we should be willing to assist our close friends.

I think they are stacking the HGVs on the M20,no news here, which is very bad. I suspect they will resume early evening,as the strike is due to end then, also thestrkers will need to home for some wine. London Eurostar station will be getting busy as well.

Obviously not Calais...
Yes, and you are right on the population density. The weather is highly variable here too, but, then again, be careful what you wish for: we might not be as green nor as pleasant without it.

It is getting ridiculous. It's a ticking time bomb for Cameron and will only get worse as further migrants work their way up from Italy.
The only way is to make it as unpleasant as possible for those that make it across -= internment in the north of Scotland - followed by swift return to the country of origin with finger prints and dna taken.
Pay Ryanair to run a return service - outsource at £50 a head.

The only credible way IMHO is to process illegal migrants offshore. Once they make it to EU soil, given the skewed way rights are interpreted, it's game over for effective migration controls IRL.

Tessa all the way. They are all much-of-a-muchness on most things, but she's the only one out of the three main contenders who agrees that Heathrow needs a third runway.
