    Silly hype. It's just a dry procedural rule change:

    'Under existing procedures, if a Speaker’s re-election is opposed there is a public vote of all MPs which can deter opponents from voting against the incumbent for fear of being blacklisted if the bid to dump them fails.

    Under Mr Hague’s plan, around a dozen MPs would be required to call out in the Commons that they opposed Mr Bercow staying in the job he has held since 2009. A secret ballot would then be held, allowing MPs to vote against Mr Bercow without fear of reprisals.'

    I don't see why the Lib Dems are getting themselves mixed up with something like this.

    Lindsay Hoyle's good performance at the budget may have swayed a few MPs against Bercow.

    Trying to get rid of Bercow is a high risk strategy, what happens if Labour prefer Bercow after the election simply to cause problems within the Tory party?
    Also if Bercow stays he will want revenge, having a vengeful Speaker is not going to work for the Tories if in opposition.

    Wasn't the idea that he would be freer to act with impunity as the Clerk would lack the knowledge to even internally question his actions?

    I have no idea how true that could be, but Bercow's own explanation - that he wanted to split the roles, the old guard would not let him, so he thought it a good idea to hire someone patently unsuited for one of the roles - does not stand up to much scrutiny, so I'm at a loss.

    If you record them you need a TV licence. Only services not "broadcast live" are not covered, such as iPlayer.

    I have often thought I would feel much more inclined to definitively call myself a lefty if some on the left did not pretend only Tories make statements implying disdain or hatred for other parts of or members of this country.

    All parties have sociopaths, and no party gets a majority of the votes and they don't need to get elected, so as long as they hate those who will never vote for them anyway they are deemed politically acceptable.

    To put that in context that is similar to the 52% that say in the same poll that the current CON-LD coalition will be the worst possible election result.

    In 2005, when Bercow was a Con the vote was Con 57%, Lab 20%, LD 20%, UKIP 3%
    In 2010 as speaker it was Bercow 44%, John Stevens 21%, Farage 17%, various others 18%

    Now if Bercow picked up much of the LD and Lab vote, then that suggests he didn't hold on to much of his Con vote.

    UKIP and Green are already standing against him and if Con and LD did too I couldn't see him winning

    From the Yougov megapoll the -> SNP switching was 44% of Lab 2010, 50% of LD and 20% of Con 2010 vote !

    That implies like 50%.

    Speedy/TSE Interestingly a Tory government is the least unpopular and the most wanted, I remain of the view it will be a Tory minority government backed by the LDs and DUP, Opinium on Sunday had it Tory 36% Labour 33%, that could well be how it ends up

    That's my point, the journalism around this election has been utterly uninformed, misleading and generally awful. I'm not even talking about the blatant partisanship on display either.

    Worse than debt/deficit mix ups.
