With a load of dead weight sacked from cabinet, the question is who replaces them. If its light fingered Lou and big Ange to big roles, I would have Peter Kyle back in a heart beat.

Haigh managed to give a massive unconditional pay rise to train drivers with absolutely no reforms and got in a big bust up with DP World that put at risk billions in investment and Big Ange was failing massively at getting any 'ouse building going.

I approve of dumping Lammy and Reeves. They were both over promoted.

I may not approve of their replacements

Lou is defo getting a position. She hasn't left Burnham's side for weeks/months by all accounts.

Fpt: The tragedy for Labour is to be two years gone and despite the huge majority they're starting again further to the left with no money and so far a few hackneyed back to the 80s phrases. I've never been a fan but they're plunging to levels of ineptitude that being to rival the Johnson/Truss eras.

Why do good, average and terrible all poll the same, and outscore "poor" ?

(You don't have to explain "great".)

Haigh should get a Party Chair type role but be kept out of any governmental role.

Rayner should be kept busy with something inconsequential. She will be on manoeuvres soon enough.

Yes, better for Burnham to start with low expectations and more easily exceed them then high expectations impossible to meet.

Reeves gone as Chancellor the least surprising news of this reshuffle

Only one person knocks it out of the park and that's our Kemi. And as Burnham doesn't have any interest in appointing her to her rightful place in the firmament, it's a No from us.

That is lazy generalisation. I don't think much of most of the "talent" in any of the leading parties. And the few people in current government who I think are decent are in very minor roles, don't really play the greasy pole game or aren't allowed out very often.

On the flip side I thought the Blair and Cameron government had plenty of talented people.

For funsies I have started re-reading 'Seasons in the Sun", Dominic Sandbrook's take on the 1974 - 1979 period. Interesting parallels - a country seen to be in decline, with huge economic problems, lacking confidence. And in Callaghan a new PM taking over after a couple of years from the old PM (Wilson, in this case). How will Burnham's reign turn out? No idea, but at least no more Starmer, and that, at least is something.

The nation is desperate for genuine change, and it won't be to everyone's advantage or taste, but we cannot go on like this.

As indeed they said in the 70's.

    |And for what? I mean, what possible advantage do you get by being in space? Lower rent? Easier maintenance? Lower latency? I’ll put that down as unlikely.

If you were planning, for instance, to suck up every piece of space detectable EM output in the Greater Beijing area, you might want a big blob of cache that you could query and pull down the sub elements you want rather than have to bring all of it back.

Can you say why it is, or will you let me define it for everyone?

So COE is important to you Big G, because Red Ed was the only Labour person coming into government with a plan - that was to implement the Conservative Party Net Zero Plans and policy.

As Kemi’s leading cheerleader on PB, you concede she must respond to change, and get the response right?

For example - does Kemi Badenoch now need to more clearly spell out how she will open up the North Sea, just as Farage has done? When Labour have no new drilling, then “opening up the North Sea to lower British energy bills” is pushing against an open door, with spin without even having much detail or policy. However what Labour will do now is token “opening up the North Sea” on just 2 licenses stuck in legal limbo, and they will call this the “sensible, pragmatic mixed approach for Britain.” Does this shoot dead the fox Kemi’s has set running? In response does Kemi now urgently need to explain exactly how she will go further - redefine that difference - so Labour does not appear on the same page she is - otherwise she will surrender the clear blue water she built up on this?

Its wait and see on policy and appointments. The couple of initial things he has done like cancelling the Blockbuster Id Card System, I said I thought was very sensible. Getting rid of Reeves was always going to happen, some of the others he has sacked were very poor in that they were out of their depth in the job they were given e.g. Peter Kyle.

No it doesn't. He hasn't appointed them to anything yet. I said if he does. Louise Haigh and Rayner were very poor on policy before they got sacked. Rayner is much better in attack dog type role, every party has them.

If he gives Rayner the health job for instance that will be very stupid. I personally would put Streeting back in there, he was doing ok in a really tough gig.

For the first time in ages Nigel Farage is on the ropes due to his close relationship with a convicted fraudster.

The attacks on Farage will be blunted if Burnham appoints a convicted fraudster to his cabinet..

Price-fixing in markets is rarely a good idea.

Now, given that the housing market has been a failed market for some time, freezing rents might make sense as an interim measure as a plan for a massive intervention in the market takes shape - such as council house-building ramping up to >100k a year. But 100k houses a year is going to cost big money.

But I am right here arn’t I? Politics is more battle of spin and perceptions than actual policy. Badenoch was benefiting from a help on energy bills from drilling of North Sea Labour wouldn’t do. She loses that now, unless she gets the response right. What do you suggest the response should be?

I have keep reminding myself Patrick Vallance is a minister. He is as invisible as Timpson. Before he joined the government he had lots of good ideas about better use of data among the public sector.

Edit:- Patrick Vallance resigns as science minister
    https://www.timeshighereducation.com/news/patrick-vallance-quits-science-minister

I am not sure what happened there. It was a very good appointment on the face of it by Starmer but he was totally invisible for the past 2 years. You might say he was getting on with the job, but all these announcements for AI, data centres, R&D, etc, it never seem he is part of.

Maybe the Guardian story is true they get rid of the Department for Science and Technology.

I’d be interested to see how rent freezes would work. If they were such a resounding success everyone would be doing it.

Presumably landlords costs wouldn’t be frozen ?

Still, kicking landlords is never going to go down badly with the voters.

As we are talking space anyone else noticed just how many satellites are visible in the night sky now? I usually pop out around 11-12 pm to take the air (recently its when it's finally cooling down) and its striking how many satellites I see. I guess Starlink is a lot?

Andy B tells reporters he's thinking about rent freezes.

    Dear God...

Sounds like a good idea to me. Aside from helping the poorest it saves the exchequer quite a bit in future housing benefit.

If you restrict the price of anything long enough you will create a shortage. Doesn’t matter if it’s toilet rolls in Venezuela or rental properties in Nuneaton.

Not a great start for Burnham on PB. Not exactly knocking it out of the park on Britain's foremost political blog.

I approve of all his sacking

    Key now is COE
    “Key now is COE.”

Kemi will do fine and even better if she ignores your rants
But I am right here arn’t I? Politics is more battle of spin and perceptions than actual policy. Badenoch was benefiting from a help on energy bills from drilling of North Sea Labour wouldn’t do. She loses that now, unless she gets the response right. What do you suggest the response should be?
She will get the response right by supporting Burnham where she agrees and taking him on where she doesn’t

On this she will support him whilst he will have problems from some behind him and the greens

Rent controls will reduce the available rental capacity as landlords leave the sector.

That will make his pledge to reduce homelessness harder.

Liz Kendal out as Science and Technology Secretary

No one will notice her departure.
I have keep reminding myself Patrick Vallance is a minister. He is as invisible as Timpson. Before he joined the government he had lots of good ideas about better use of data among the public sector.

Edit:- Patrick Vallance resigns as science minister

I am not sure what happened there. It was a very good appointment on the face of it by Starmer but he was totally invisible for the past 2 years. You might say he was getting on with the job, but all these announcements for AI, data centres, R&D, etc, it never seem he is part of.

Maybe the Guardian story is true they get rid of the Department for Science and Technology.
We had that Chris Whitty on Bath last week to receive an honorary degree. Nice chap.

Sadly no-one actually said 'next slide please' during the ceremony...

So that is all of Starmer's "big" outside signing gone. Again, really weird, there is absolutely no doubt Timpson really believes in his cause, the whole Timpson family are extremely good people, he has built a very successful but ethical business and it seems like he got eaten by the blob or something.

Jesus, is Burnham's really blaming it all on Fatcher? 😂

Well that is the left's thesis.

interesting that Callaghan and Healey were approaching monetarism too as a way out of the 1970's doldrums. No doubt they would not have been as single minded about it, and they may have looked to the working class areas that were destroyed a bit more, but it was coming.

Burnham is reportedly going to announce cost of living measures and how they will be paid for tomorrow.

But important to note that the OBR will not have verified how much revenue will be raised by any tax increases - they normally take weeks to do this - they certainly won't be doing it overnight.

So is he going to announce eg rises in CGT and claim they will pay for his giveaways - even though not verified by OBR.

Burnham needs to put Kinnock back in his box.

The optics of linking himself to that era of Labour politics will not help Burnham establish himself as the future.

Though Kinnock got 34% in 1992 which would probably be enough for Burnham to be re elected while the right is divided between Tories and Reform

No it would be a disaster and just end up with fewer homes available to rent as more landlords leave the sector. It is a similar policy to that which Mamdani and Sturgeon pursued.

Bus fare caps also being considered

Burnham's high-profile pledge to end rough sleeping is interesting, as it's not a pledge that is an obvious vote winner - i.e. it's not on most people's list of priorities.

It rather suggests that a 'moral mission' will be part of Burnham's agenda - doing what's right, not just what's most popular.

To me it suggests his vacuity instead; ending rough sleeping isn't possible; its a combination of economic issues, mental health issues, and a very small number of people who embrace the lifestyle (or in some cases, can't function any other way).
Crisis suggests that ending rough sleeping is possible and not even that difficult: https://www.crisis.org.uk/ending-homelessness/the-plan-to-end-homelessness/solutions/chapter-8-ending-rough-sleeping/
Not even GCSE level source analysis is required to understand that a charity set up to conquer homelessness has a bit of a vested interest in saying that it is possible....
Eh? Every charity surely has a vested interest in ensuring that whatever social or economic problem that they are trying to resolve is never actually so achieved?
Of course. They want to manage problems not solve them. Preferably taking a load of cash from the govt while doing so.
    The California approach.

Not a good sign, if Burnham is going to be all in on Big NGO from the start.

I saw his suggestion on international aid through a similar lens, where will the money actually be going?

"His statement did not give a specific reason for resigning, but it is understood he feels he has done as much as he can in the role."

That was also the role given to Vallance, but again it seems like trying to unlock the levers of government too hard to drive change.

An extra 100K houses a year would barely make any difference.

You need to ramp up to 500K extra. And more.

Freezing rents would stop even more property construction.

Argentine newspaper praises ‘polite and respectful’ players in remarkable claims

National publication writes that La Albiceleste ‘lost with heads held high’ despite ungainly scenes after World Cup final defeat by Spain

Argentina’s press has praised its national team’s behaviour during and after Sunday’s World Cup final defeat by Spain, despite international condemnation.

Clarín, Argentina’s leading newspaper, described La Albiceleste as having been “polite and respectful, despite a few unfortunate isolated incidents in the last match”.

“On the field and off, the Argentine team displayed a range of values that are hard to find these days,” Silvia Fesquet, Clarín’s editor, gushed, adding that the players “did not speak ill of their rivals or try to justify their mistakes by blaming others”.

Clarín’s rival, La Nación, also praised the Argentine players’ dignity in defeat.

“The team obtained the most difficult thing: the affection and recognition of the people, even without being champions,” ran the headline of La Nación’s main report on the final.

It was the classic - the system refused to budge on any of his proposed changes. When he went to No.10 to get political backing to overcome this, they didn't give him any.

    No they are not.

If for no other reason than the government has stuff in the pipeline already to add to them e.g. a new national database of all landlords which landlords will have to register with and pay a fee for.
