Why would they even want a deal when they can just trade the volatility by placing bets just ahead of the latest wisdom, and I use the term advisedly, from Trump ?

A one point lead that will decay back to -10 points once Burnham has to choose between raising lots of unpopular taxes or cut welfare spending to pay for his agenda.

I seriously don't see how this leadership change will make any difference. Treating Burnham like the chosen one and raising expectations so high and acting like he's going to wave some magic wand and suddenly the weekly shop falls by £40 and filling up the tank drops by £20.

I really think Labour need to start lowering expectations or the polling crash when it turns out Burnham will do almost nothing different to Starmer is going to leave them in a worse place than they are now.
Like you Max are all itching for the financial and polling crash. Another lifetime of inch perfect Tory Governance awaits.

Watching both FIFA and the scalpers get taken down, is going to be absolutely hilarious.

Same to all the hotels and transport companies who thought they could screw the fans, but the fans just said no.

The quarter-finals and on will be sold out and full, but those 80 group stage games not so much.

Can't help feeling that Wharton is paying the price for playing for one of the less fashionable clubs. Henderson is so far past it that it just gets embarrassing. He'll be 36 in June for goodness sake.

I’ll judge Burnham (assuming it will be he) on what he does rather than the vibes.

I think Labour have managed to persuade themselves that with a change at the top the problems will all magically go away and their issues are purely down to messaging. While bad comms is definitely some of it, it’s far from the whole picture. They need a more attractive offering for voters. Whether Burnham can offer that, I can’t say yet.

Maybe when it starts I might find my normal excitement but at the moment I’m much more looking forward to the French Open and Wimbledon.

This world cup is shaping up to be a disaster, like everything else the Orange one touches. For fans to have matches spread over thousands of miles in 3 very large countries is just taking the piss. With ICE very likely to cause trouble in the US and the complete rip offs of being forced to buy ludicrously expensive train fares just to get to the stadium attendances are going to be desperately low, as will the atmosphere. Its sad. I've waited a significant chunk of my adult life to see Scotland qualify again and it is going to be crap. At the risk of stating the blindingly obvious FIFA are a total disgrace.

The idea of having the 3 country World Cup bid pre-dates Trump. They came up with in 2016. The rip off tickets / hotels prices as shown from the link are a mix of FIFA and local hoteliers both in US and Canada thinking they can absolute rip the piss.

Now perhaps a more engaged president might have realised this and tried to get together the other national and city leaders. But this is a case where it isn't really Trump front and centre who is the root cause of these problems.

A pint of beer cost about 10 pence in 1970 according to Google AI.

It cost 24p or 25p in 1978 in a Social Club when I was 18 and bizarrely working behind the bar for a few months. I think shorts were more expensive, perhaps 28p or 29p
79p for the cheapest pints in 2005 when I started uni in Cardiff, about £1 in London.

Seems like a lifetime ago now.
    Shots were 3 for £1 in 1990
Tbe price of alcoholic drinks sticks firmly in our brain as a glimpse of a better time. But has the price of a pint risen by notably more than inflation? I have no idea what a pint of milk cost in 1989. But I know that a pint of Boddies at the Comfortable Gill in Stockport was 88p.

And I remember my shock at my first £1+ pint. Colwyn Bay Rugby Club, 1990. I was 15.
When I went to Cambridge in 1992, the pubs were at 1.50 or so a pint, and the Union offered something pretty horrible for a quid.
Around 1990 a pint would cost about £1 in Yorkshire.

    As would fish and chips.

Which suggests that fish and chips has had higher inflation.
About 5 years time you'll need a mortgage to have fish and chips and a pint

The feeling isn't that it's ALL persona and comms and a leader change 100% sorts it. It's more just a recognition that Starmer's unpopularity is so deep and so wide that it was handing the next election to Farage. So the change is, going for the wonky lingo, a 'necessary but not sufficient' step towards heading that disaster off.

Yes that’s a huge disappointment. Last years French Open final was absolutely amazing . I’m looking forward to seeing Jack Draper back in action at Wimbledon .I’m really hoping he can get over his injury problems .

Wimbledon has always been my absolutely favourite tournament.

I think Burnham will be a very positive step, at least initially.

For the first day. I'll give you the first day.

    Then... apocalypse.

(It's odd how whereas we've herded ourselves into a PB mindset to some extent we vary so enormously)

Anyway, my prediction is that Burnham will be the death of Labour. He'll spiral the country into a doom loop with grinning Ed Milliband at the helm. Unfortunately, very unfortunately, I also now think we'll get a nasty dose of Farage.

This was reported from Florida a couple of days ago.

    https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/crime/article315443888.html
..The twins and their older brother Tal Alexander were convicted in March of multiple federal sex crimes, including sex trafficking. But a Miami Herald investigation found their pattern of drugging, raping, and videotaping their abuse of girls began decades earlier – when they were as young as 15 and still in high school.

Six women told the Herald they were raped or assaulted by one or more of the brothers between 2002 and 2004, while the three brothers were attending Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School near Aventura. One spoke to police, and despite her accusations, police did not interview all the boys, and the school appears to have taken no disciplinary action.

The women said the assaults were rampant, and occurred at teen hangouts devoid of parental supervision, at the homes of the Alexander brothers or their friends. Half of the women spoke to the FBI about what happened to them when they were younger.

The women were students at Krop, a large Miami-Dade public high school, or nearby Miami Country Day School, a private school. One was in eighth grade when a group of boys, including Tal, “dragged” her into a bedroom, she said. She believes she was drugged.

“It just seems like the adults completely f—--- abdicated their responsibility,” that woman told the Herald.

In the 2003 report, which notes that Krop’s principal was informed after a school resource officer called law enforcement, police did not interview the brothers, and the State Attorney’s Office declined to press charges...
Yes, there is a subset of men who are total shits. And if they think that there are no consequences for bad beheviour will act in ways that are almost incomprehensible.
These are the sort of men who joined Sturmbrigade Dirlewanger. If they had ever possessed any form of humanity, it had left them long ago. I remember having this discussion with @Leon_VotedForStarmer where we agreed we had both met murderers, and they were not necessarily terrible people. A murder might be committed in a moment of madness (premeditated murder is different of course).

But, sex criminals of this type? They are simply purely evil.
It's the most compelling argument for bringing back the death penalty. There's really nothing for society to gain by keeping these people alive.
The death penalty is always wrong. End of story.
Justice is like sausages. If you want to enjoy it you probably don't want to look too closely how it is made. Having been at the processing end for some years now I would never support the death penalty. Having said that I have come across some who I hope die in prison.

In all honesty I would say compassion. Law is at its worst when it is overly legalistic and loses sight of what it is trying to achieve. You need compassion for the victims and, surprisingly often, for the accused too. You want to have justice not legalistic nonsense.

Hope Not Hate say they found another twitter account of the Reform candidate. The thing is this is where they don't do themselves any favours, they are outraged at what clearly are jokey comments many of the sort of things that get posted in here every day e.g. people eating fish and chips right by the sea should be waterboarded and "If it's not tits and arse or rugby its politics."

The other social media activity seems more problematic. You don't need to start clutching your pearls because a Northern plumber takes about tits and arse.

It was poor behaviour and should be condemned.

However he was no worse than that utter moron Steve Bray who seems to be a hero to diehard remainers when he shouts at Tory MP’s.
And still fucking there. He went way over the line of acceptable protesting years ago, harassing politicians and interrupting journalists daily. A number of anti-vax nutters got criminal records for rather similar harassement.

Maybe when it starts I might find my normal excitement but at the moment I’m much more looking forward to the French Open and Wimbledon.

There seems no buzz about it. Usually shops have so much branded merchandise and supermarkets like Sainsbury’s are usually full of displays and promotional merchandise as well as ads on the TV.

This year I’ve seen nothing at all, anywhere.

I do feel for Starmer who must wonder how the hell he’s getting ousted as leader only 2 years in .

The level of hate directed towards him is just ridiculous. I’m even warming to Reeves .

I expect Labour MPs will rue the day they lost their minds and decided to ditch their leader . Burnham comes with impossible to meet expectations , I get why he might be a better communicator but no amount of spin can magic up loads of money .

Burnham's agenda can be summed up in two words.
    Levelling Up.
Lots on the right used to think that was a splendid idea.
    Maybe some still do?

    Levelling who up to who.

Few people want those poroer than themselves to be levelled up to.

Lots want to be levelled up to those richer than themselves.
    North to the South
    Blue collar to white collar
    State to private
    Non grads to grads
    Hands to brain
    Young to old
    Renters to owners
    Towns to cities
    Skint to loaded

    We'll see how he goes.
Most of that is either simplistic, misconceived, irrelevant, anachronistic or harmful.

Overall it looks like some leftist student idealism from the late 1980s.

The world has moved on from your youth.
No it hasn't. The same fundamental problem exists as when I was in nappies. Life prospects are determined mainly by birth circumstances. Possibly even more so now.
    Definitely more so.

You fail to recognise the problem. The party MPs are irredeemably split with no majority to do the necessary. The resultant mess is pretty much baked in whoever is in charge.

Finally my answer (I have been building garden obelisks today despite the freezing weather - I'm wearing warm trousers, woolly jumper, long woolly cardigan, warm ankle boots and wrist warmers on May 21, a month before the nights start drawing in) to today's important question from @kjh -

"How do you win a prize for a compost heap?"

You take some of the compost, put it in a jar, with your name and take it to the show before 9 am, where it will be put on show in the relevant part of the produce tent for the all important judging inspection. While that is going on, you get yourself a decent cup of tea and wander round looking at the various exhibits and the animals: lots of sheep of every conceivable variety (I very nearly kidnapped the one in the photograph below), goats and cattle. Plus a whole tent full of chickens and hens and ducks.

And then when the prizes are announced, you get a sticker and a book on composting plus a very nice notebook and pen which I am still using. A celebratory ice cream follows.

I have just bought a small greenhouse as well. There is no end to the excitement in my life.

Sorry for the delay in replying. Classic Car lunch then off to our holiday home in Southwold. Now in pub. Putting compost in a jar is a new one on me. I normally associate it with a wheelbarrow and spade.

Congratulations on your prize. How the heck do they judge it?

Those charged with protecting children preferred a quiet life, and looked the other way.

    Same old, same old.
They do appear to be quite selective. Some cases they try to take away your children for misgendering one of their classmates, but in others seem to have little trouble ignoring or batting away very legitimate concerns of abuse.
No child has ever been taken away for misgendering a classmate. Don’t be silly.

The Sky story is horrific. At least some justice has now arrived.
Such stories are not confined to the UK.

    Yup.

I can remember, just, collecting the Esso coins from 1970.

I’m sure Sainsbury’s had a range of coins in the 2010’s for cup comps too.
I wonder if kids have just moved on?
I think sports cards / stickers are still doing really well, but I don't think its the kids buying them. A bit like lego its become this adult male of a certain type hobby.
FIFA sold the rights for post 2030 to Topps for a lot of money.

I remember collecting Topps Star Wars cards (with added bubble gum) in 1978/9.

And don't get me started on those who failed to intervene.

Apart from people with neck sleeves and teardrop tattoos.
What's the maximum penalty for people who insist on trying to get into the train carriage whilst everyone's exiting it?

Tbe price of alcoholic drinks sticks firmly in our brain as a glimpse of a better time. But has the price of a pint risen by notably more than inflation? I have no idea what a pint of milk cost in 1989. But I know that a pint of Boddies at the Comfortable Gill in Stockport was 88p.

And I remember my shock at my first £1+ pint. Colwyn Bay Rugby Club, 1990. I was 15.
When I went to Cambridge in 1992, the pubs were at 1.50 or so a pint, and the Union offered something pretty horrible for a quid.
Cannon Lager for 37p a can in the mid 90s..

    State to private
    Non grads to grads
    Hands to brain
    Young to old
    Renters to owners
    Towns to cities
    Skint to loaded

    We'll see how he goes.
Most of that is either simplistic, misconceived, irrelevant, anachronistic or harmful.

Overall it looks like some leftist student idealism from the late 1980s.

The world has moved on from your youth.
No it hasn't. The same fundamental problem exists as when I was in nappies. Life prospects are determined mainly by birth circumstances. Possibly even more so now.
Certainly and that's something people born in the western world should be very grateful for.

What I want is levelling up of opportunity.

Which includes recognising that opportunities might come and go at different times during a person's life. Especially so in a changing world.

And that requires people to be able to take those opportunities if they wish so and not overly restricted by previous decisions.

Which is why your 'non grads to grads' comment is anachronistic. When you and I were young going to university was usually a good idea for the opportunities it offered up and, sometimes more importantly, it didn't handicap you later as student debt now does to the young.

In the future opportunities might come and new learning / training might be required a person is 25 or 35 or 45. Having loaded up with debt by 21 those possibilities are restricted.

Likewise I think people should have the opportunity to make as much or as little as they want from life. So those who want to climb the wealth ladder can do so while those who are happier with a lower paid but easier life can also find what they want. But with that comes a requirement not to resent those who have become loaded.

And if you want one practical policy which would fit with your levelling up vision then ban solar farms in the North.

Cover the Cotswolds and Chilterns, or Hype Park and Hampstead Heath, with them but the North has got its countryside back after two centuries of industrial pollution. Its time for other places to take their turn in supplying the country's energy.

Google refused to answer this question: "Is Karen Bass a bass, a tenor, an alto, or a soprano?" Perhaps someone who spends time in Southern Calfornia can. (Personally, I hope the answer is "soprano", because of that TV series.)

Trump: He’d like me to go. I’m going to try. I said, this is not good timing for me. I have a thing called Iran and other things. He’s a person I’ve known for a long time.

Of course he’ll be at his son’s wedding.

Equality of opportunity isn't a bad idea, though people often wildly overestimate what the government can do to promote it. But ideas like making private education available to gifted children from poorer families through the assisted places scheme, which Labour scrapped, or abolishing VAT on school fees, which Labour imposed, or reducing payroll taxes and the minimum wage to enable youngsters to get their first job, both of which Labour has increased, or scrapping useless degrees in crummy universities, which Labour promoted, burdening students with tens of thousands in pointless debt, all suggest themselvses.

There's also the crazy idea of making housing available in wealthy areas to allow young adults to move away from sink estates and collapsing towns, which all parties have catastrophically failed to do, and the construction of which would provide tens of thousands of blue collar jobs.

So there's plenty that can be done, but only an idiot would trust Labour to do any of it.

FWIW: Your discussion of beer costs inspired me to check what I had paid for a six pack of 14 ounce bottles, recently. It was on sale, so I paid just 12 dollars. Have no idea how that compares to prices in the UK.

Details: Deschutes Black Butte Porter, 5.5 percent alcohol by volume. I think it goes well with brats and sauerkraut (and similar dishes), but I am not expert on such things. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deschutes_Brewery

Untapped tells me a US friend has tried this and enjoyed it. Looks to be tricky to get in the UK tho'.

A bit cheaper than here probably. Would be at about the minimum pricing threshold in Scotland. (£1.63 for 500ml at 5% ABV)
