Keir we go! Wes we can, Streeting resigns – politicalbetting.com
It’s being reported that multiple Labour MPs believe Al Carns is preparing a leadership bid if Keir Starmer quits. Good move. He is an ex Royal Marine. From a working class background in Aberdeen and is relatable and communicates in a way that not many Labour MPs are able to. https://t.co/Ou3xtzIhxC pic.twitter.com/DkxUlwri2P

Wes Streeting takes an early lead on the inside rail. He’s looking lean, efficient, and keeping a very close eye on the private sector hedges. He’s jumping with a clinical precision that suggests he’s been practicing his delivery for months.
Just a length behind him, Angela Rayner is making up ground on the outside. She’s got a massive stride, showing plenty of fire and absolutely no fear of the bigger obstacles. She’s taking the "Council House Leap" with total confidence, ignoring the critics in the grandstand.
Andy Burnham is sitting comfortably in the middle of the pack. He’s the "King of the North" today, looking like he’s got plenty of stamina for the long haul. He seems to be running his own race, perhaps eyeing a different finish line than the rest of them.
Al Carns is the dark horse here, maintaining a steady, disciplined pace. He’s navigating the mud with the tactical awareness of a veteran, keeping his head down and avoiding the early skirmishes.
Actually quite a good resignation letter (discounting the self serving NHS puffery).

Wes Streeting resigns, and effectively invites a timetable that would allow Andy Burnham to stand too. Says the contest needs to be about "ideas" and "broad".
HASN'T GOT THE NUMBERS.

Good for Streeting. However, he's done for, as is Starmer.

It's basically "I've achieved results, you haven't".
A bold approach.

In fact, I still think so.
(You can decide for yourselves whether a gangster movie is an appropriate metaphor for the current Labour Party struggles.)
Farage is claiming he had agreed the purchase of this house before the donation....GB News and Cameo clearly pay incredibly well.
I've never called him a bottler.
But yes he's an oily weasel, a rat, a little shit. Not because of this apparent challenge but because he is and always has been.
Thankfully most people I know, far from my politics, seem to agree.
I guess he’d spin the last as it makes him sound the most honourable. Although, as I noted yesterday, if he wins but isn’t seen to beat the full field then you can imagine continued muttering from those around Mr Burnham. So maybe he’s been essentially trapped into this call.
Over to Starmer I guess - I expect he’s going to have to pick or at least indicate a leaving date. Sense suggests early next year (and my interests). Although I’d laugh my @rse off if he tries to get away with staying on until 2028.
I'm starting to think Wes hasn't got a clue what he's doing and done.
I'm starting to think Wes hasn't got a clue what he's doing and done.
No one knows who he is
No one knows what he believes in
Most people don't give a damn that he was in the Army
He might be ready to step up after the GE defeat if he still had a seat. But not now.
But will it cut through? Farage often seems to get a pass on things that would kill off other politicians.
So we're in a holding pattern. If the leadership team becomes clear and they plan to tear up fiscal rules in an uncontrolled way, expect bond yield to widen further. If the reverse occurs then they may recover.
Good to see you
I am struggling with my mobility and my wife is quite ill awaiting an endyscope for suspected celiac but hopefully she will recover once confirmed and she goes on a gluten free diet
At 82 and 86 we are just grateful for our blessings and family
What a time we are living through
Told Streeting's team have confirmed he has now moved behind a longer timetable. That means all the challengers and a very large proportion of the PLP are now in the same place. I'm told the bulk of the cabinet will now move in behind this position as well. Minister tells me "Game over".
Burnham back into the fray then
Mystic GIN strikes again 😂
1. Wes submits his challenge. Keith says he will fight. Others quit the cabinet to also challenge.
2. Wes doesn't yet challenge. Is James Purnell Jr
3. Other cabinet ministers tell Keith that its over and resign. Lectern deployed later, a process over the next few months
3 has a few sub variants:
a) Burnham gets someone to retire, is passed by the NHS, wins the byelection
b) Burnham gets someone to retire, is passed by the NEC, loses the by-election
c) Burnham gets someone to retire, is blocked by the NEC
d) Burnham can't find a seat. Announces he has always loved Aberdeen, comes up here
If a by-election is held in GM, all the polls show he would win.
Come on someone. Collapse the state to *something*
And, yes, what times indeed. I took a complete break, heading off around the world and as far from politics as I could get!
xx
That's what I meant really.
Edit, that is what he says in his letter: " It is now clear that you will not lead the Labour Party into the next general election and that Labour MPs and Labour Unions want the debate about what comes next to be a battle of ideas, not of personalities or petty factionalism. It needs to be broad, and it needs the best possible field of candidates. I support that approach and I hope that you will facilitate this."
Without further resignations this simply doesn't happen.
Wes is supremely self confident and probably wants a full, long contest hoping that his campaigning and debating ability will give him opportunities to land blows on his rivals. Realistically that’s his only chance - to defeat his opponents in close combat and demonstrate to party members that, even if they don’t like his politics, Wes is a proven winner and campaigner. It’s the only realistic path to the top that he has.
The momemtum is with the rebels and Starmer is in real difficulty
I've actually now bought a place in the Scottish Highlands.
But back to this politics ...

This letter reads awfully like the beginnings of an Andy Burnham deal...

Bring back the Tories for Lady Sarah!
I am sure a highland home will be just wonderful
Maybe I should have said Burnham-Streeting?
@SamCoatesSky
So @GNev2 has been discussed inside Labour as a possible Andy Burnham replacement - but I'm told it is unclear if he's been approached - so just to ask on here - @GNev2 - any comment?
Catherine West now on Radio 4 saying Keir Starmer could win a leadership election and not ruling out voting for him

This is known.
I suspect Al Carns will equally supprise on the downside. The overwhelming evidence is that if you have a functional brain or spine, you are unlike to also be a Labour MP.
There is no way GM is voting for GNev. The list of people he alienates is almost endless.
