Just picked up a leaflet from the Greens. It says the latest polling projection for East Greenwich has Greens first and Labour second. 'Reform, Lib Dems and Conservatives are far behind and cannot win here', it concludes.
Am I right in my interpretation that what they are essentially saying is if you want to beat the Greens you have to vote Labour?
I think they may have a thing to two to learn from the Lib Dems about how to present this kind of information ...
I had a similar Green leaflet with dodgy reference to “latest poll”, with no details where the numbers come from, but presumably that big MRP, which gives you a projection but would have zero or close to zero responses from any specific ward.
s I have said before: first rule of Dodgy Bar Chart club - always put yourself second, never first
Exactly. They could (rightly) have pointed to recent byelection wins and present themselves as the insurgents who can finally topple Labour. No-one in Greenwich would give the remotest chance to Ref or Con - and LD have a mere handful of seats in the remoter parts of the borough.
🚨 NEW: Keir Starmer says Zack Polanski's repost criticising the officers who arrested the terror suspect is "disgraceful"
"If I was there, I’d be thinking... he’s going to blow me up and everybody around here. In those circumstances, I think you can quite see why what could have gone through their mind is, we need to do whatever we can to disable this guy… Now, when I then see Zack Polanski come out and retweet or support a criticism of that, I think it’s disgraceful… He’s not fit to lead any political party"
Why the flip is Keir Starmer giving terrorists ideas for new weapons? Knife bombs!
Charges laid in the case from 2 years ago of the woman who put her Land Rover into a school in Wimbledon, killing and injuring 7 children, in a change after a reevaluation.
It's not clear enough to say much more, and is sub judice.

Might be an idea to target the knife / suspected trigger then rather than kicking him in the head repeatedly, you're going to look a bit stupid spread across the street if his backpack does explode while you're going for another kick at his head.
According to a post from U.S. President Donald J. Trump, due to the European Union (EU) not complying with the stipulations of a previously agreed upon trade deal, he is imposing 25% tariffs on cars and trucks coming from the EU. Per the statement, if cars and trucks are produced in the U.S., tariffs will not be imposed.

Why wouldn't anti-green voters still vote Labour? Especially if you show them the greens are close to taking the seats?
Seems either way the anti-greens will still vote for the closest alternative. its really the reluctantly labour lefties they want to switch to the green side. Thus the greens are winning here charts.

They need to spout the "Only we can beat Reform" claptrap to dupe folk into voting for them tactically.

I'm a little underwhelmed by Skyr's response, the possible IUD is one line, but he had a knife and had to be rendered incapable of using it. Seems clear "reasonable force" isn't popular in government circles. It has occurred to me that police carry batons, one blow to the head with an asp would have done the job, or disarm him by smashing his fingers, wonder why they weren't used.
If we can please get back on topic, I lost a gilet yesterday on a game drive. I got over excited as we watched lions fighting buffalo and my gilet somehow bounced out of the Landcruiser and I didn’t notice. If anyone is in east Rwanda near Lake Rwanyakizinga, in the next few days, I’d be hugely grateful if they could have a look for it, by the weaver bird tree on the southern shore. It’s around there somewhere
Otherwise I fear I’ll have to buy a new one. Up til now I’ve always bought Hilfiger gilets but maybe it’s time to experiment. I like the light puffer packable ones. Any recommendations?

He was clutching a knife under him in the video. Hard to get to.
A baton strike to the back of the head could easily kill. It has in US policing.

I can't tell you they are good. I can tell you they are cheap. Very cheap.
He's just hoping that a big animal eats it and then falls into a swamp. His gilet contains the long anticipated testimony of Sean. A biblical sort of work in its dullness and yet Jilly Copper like in its shallowness. Should his plan work out then it'll be the greatest wheeze since the Neanderthals started dragging their knucles.
This seems a good moment to report Mrs PtP's visit to Golders Green on Wednesday when she happened to have a work appointment there with the Jewish Chronicle. She didn't witness the attack but spoke to a number who did. They made it clear to her that it had little to do with anti-semitism and everything to do with a nutcase committing a horrible crime, because that's what some nutcases do. It isn't surprising that local leaders have taken the opportunity to press their claims in the aftermath but any suggestion that Golders Green or anywhere else in London is a no go zone are complete bollox. I have passed through myself several times in the past few days and there are no signs of the local Jews hiding in terror, covering their stars of David, removing their skull caps, or dressing any differently to the way they do normally. I was personally able to make my usual visit to Daniels and scoff a smoked salmon bagel without fear. In short, it is business as usual.
Mrs PtP is half Jewish. I am not Jewish, although I do have a roman nose. Neither of us has a dog in this fight. I used to think this was perhaps a lazy or unprincipled position but increasingly I see it as one to be proud of.
I hope it doesn't cause offence.
I agree that this attacker is more crazy than motivated by religion or politics, but I wonder how people would feel about it if an equally deranged, serial offender who had only been out of a mental home a few days was a white Englishman who randomly sought out Muslims in one of East London’s Islamic neighbourhoods. I reckon people would be laying the blame at Farage and Rupert Lowe’s door, and Sir Keir would be referencing ‘far right thuggery’
In that case it would be accurate - what the "currents of hate" in the sea of online discourse do, is carry people along them.
Which is why it is very dangerous to make interoperate statements and ones that are political untruths.
Years back, Shell was going to decommission a floating storage tank in the North Sea - the Brent Spar. It had been clean out and was going to be sunk. Greenpeace was very opposed to this. So they mounted a campaign that went over the top - even claiming that the Brent Spar was radioactive.
A guy with a few screws loose took this as the spur to plant a bomb near a Shell petrol station in Germany. Fortunately no one was hurt.
When asked, Greenpeace were very defensive about the rhetoric they'd used. It was curious to see how they couldn't understand that their intemperate language could be (mis)interpreted as a call to... action. "But the cause is right, so we were justified in..."
Words can kill.
This is obviously true.
But if we extended that standard into the criminal law you’d have to arrest half the boomers posting on Facebook (and 90% of those posting about cyclists).
There are already thousands of posts a day which are already illegal (clear incitement) and aren’t investigated by the police. And yet we still have a “hurty words” narrative.
That is because too often the Police are indeed going for the 'hurty words' rather than the real incitement. They do this because it is low hanging fruit, easy to get a clear up on and looks good on the stats. Most of the time you don't even have to bother with courts. Just a Police Caution. Far more difficult to prove real incitement by people who really are inciting.
This is what is wrong with the hate speech laws. They do exactly the opposite of what we want. The give the police lots of easy targets who are really doing bugger all beyond expressing an opinion the PTB do not like and allow them to ignore the more difficut but more dangerous behaviours.
That’s a good point.
I think we can extend that to the thousands of arrests of PA supporters (the large majority of which have not been charged). Imagine if that time and energy had been extended to those actually inciting violence, or keeping checks on the kind of individual likely to actually stab Jews in London.
Sorry been busy all afternooon but it is worth just saying I agree. Proscribing PA was a ludicrous over-reaction to some very expensive vandalism. Arresting those who disagree with that decision is dangerously close to the sort of Police state so many people fear. Both the Online Hate Crime Act and the proscription of PA are wrong both in principle and in practice, execution and longer term impacts.

It's going to be a big weekend with Trump posts I guess. He's spent all week bigging up the idea of Kings. He's not going to fall short in delivery. (Aka: Clown alert at maximum)
Yesterday in Hastings, in the wake of antisemitic attacks in Golders Green, I faced Nazi salutes.
Today the Prime Minister uses his office to attack the only Jewish party leader to score political points.
So now Polanskis saying he’s not allowed to be criticised because he’s Jewish !
He needs to stop whining and just accept he fxcked up with that re-tweet .
He doesn't accept he should be criticised for historically scamming people with boob hynosis - and the BBC showed he lied about immediately disavowing his actions - he isn't going to accept criticism of things he says more recently at the height of popularity.
If ever there's a time for him to brazen things out it is now, whilst he can get away with it.
(I don't even know what he did this time, but the point stands now is when he can afford such moments).
For those complaining about Friday counts - luxury! Bradford doesn't count some wards until Saturday.
Labour's agony prolonged.
Outrageous!
In their defence, counting when everyone has three votes is much more time consuming, with Kangaroo boards and all that faff when people split their votes.

Trump likes measures he can raise and lower on a whim, but surely businesses retreat to caution in such situations? If they start to put down hundreds of millions to increase US manufacturing then he lowers the rates again they're screwed so best to pause if you can, until a less dusruptive President is in office?

That is true. Single member wards only please!
Better still, combine two all-out wards together, and elect six councillors using d'Hondt!
Many thanks everyone for your comments on the header article
Regarding some of the points raised:
There is a lot of uncertainty how big the Reform vote in Scotland will be, will their voters chicken out as we get closer to polling day, or are those votes locked in? A lot of pollsters are currently saying there are a lot of undecideds out there. Many of these people may not end up voting at all, and its clear the public are not as fussed about voting this time. We seem to be heading for a low turnout election. One or two articles appearing now in the media about how unbothered the general public are about the election (perhaps as who will be the largest party is a foregone conclusion, similar to Labour in 2001?)
There are a large number of seats in west central Scotland which are relatively safe SNP, we could see Reform and Labour eat a chunk out of the SNP majority in a lot of these, but its a longer shot to win, ie. Kilmarnock and Irvine Valley where the SNP were ahead by nearly 12k votes in 2021.
There aren't many marginals in Central Scotland (now Central Scotland and Lothians West region), however given its previous industrial heritage Reform could do very well there, particularly on the list.
There is one coastal seat in particular I forgot to include which Reform may have an outside chance in, which I will try and include in the next article. Generally speaking although Reform are taking chunks out of the Tory vote, they may end up polling very strongly in former Labour seats in the industrial central belt which have a high population of white working class. As mentioned upthread, their only Scottish success to date has been in Whitburn, which is in the new Bathgate constituency.

Harsh from Starmer. Leading a political party is a pretty low bar nowadays...
What an extraordinary win. From zero votes to almost half the votes (and with a decent turnout for a local)
There’s been lots of speculation that Reform will underperform expectations on May 7. The opposite could also occur
Unless the Reform is the same person who used to be the Malvern Hills Indy.
Even if he is it means a LOT of people in Malvern are not put off by the Reform branding. And Malvern Hills (which I know well) is not classic Reform territory
Of the - relatively few, compared to current expectations - Reform councillors newly elected last year, already 74 have resigned, defected, or been expelled or suspended from their party. With over 1,000 new Reform councillors due to be elected this time around, most of whom have little idea of what they have signed up for and many of whom won’t actually be expecting to be elected, the chaos about to be inflicted upon many of our councils over the coming year we can only imagine. The upside for PB’ers is that there is likely to be a lot more local by-elections over coming months than we’ve been used to prior. Meanwhile we can only pat Leon on the head for his naive belief that electing some of these extremist numpties to represent us is going to lead to any sort of improvement in the lives of British voters.
Same in my area when UKIP were a thing. Checked the current list. Most are small/micro business people with only 2 having previous experience. One is a long standing Tory that has jumped but would have been elected under the Tory banner anyway. Suspect the time commitment will force most to resign quickly.

I was very surprised that charges were not pressed at the time.
Wasn't this the one where the driver claimed undiagnosed epileptic seizure. Which is apparently unverifiable (proof or disproof).
So I think there was some concern from the legal point of view that letting that stand as a get out clause would create a simple get-out-of-responsibility card for anyone to use.

When will these politicians learn . Stay away from Twitter or at least engage your brain before re-tweeting .

Streeting's leadership ambitions need an election ASAP.
Rayner and Burnham need one a bit later, but not too much later.
If the election happens in 2027, the field opens up a lot.
