Yvette Cooper, if she replaced Reeves as Chancellor, would certainly leap to the front of contenders to replace Starmer as PM. She would also certainly be a more credible PM than Ed Miliband, ideologically she is like Reeves very much in camp Starmer, right of Rayner and Ed Miliband but left of Streeting and not as populist right as Mahmood. As Foreign Secretary she was already an outsider, as Chancellor she would arguably be favourite, most PMs who have taken over the job when their party was in power since WW2 were Chancellor first and Cooper polls better with the public than Reeves or Starmer
Though that's partly a manifestation of the central mystery.
The people whose CVs best qualify them to be next PM (Cooper, Lammy, Reeves, Mahmood) are nowhere in this chatter.
Maybe they genuinely don't want the job. Though my theory is that anyone who does want to be Prime Minister in these circumstances ought to be disqualified due to mental infirmity.
Why would anyone want the Downing Street Chelsea job?
8 year contract, £8m salary, for 8 weeks work? I might be able to squeeze it in if they ask nicely.
In addition, for life, people will pay you 5 or 6 figures for giving a speech. Non exec directorship etc.
And she’ll be even more hacked off if the HMRC continue to drag out her case and things happen quickly post the May elections.
There’s no way she can put herself forward for the leadership until the HMRC report back .
It could be the case it’s dragging on as it seems she’s gathered more legal advice that suggests she did nothing wrong and doesn’t owe that extra stamp duty .
I don't know. Double jeopardy and all that. She doesn't have to resign twice over the same matter. I think she will run.
The Dream Team of Rayner as Leader and Miliband as CoE looks likely to me.
It's one thing to wake up and find there's been another firearms incident in the vicinity of Donald Trump. It's quite another to find pb in full on conspiracy mode. I'll make two points:
1) Trump is an incredibly dodgy character 2) He was previously shot and nearly killed
A lot of people seem to have some amnesia towards the second point. Anyway as much as I criticise the BBC I'll happily rely on Gary Donoghue's verdict for now. (He was actually there).
Kemi projected as Kingmaker again in a hung parliament, Farage would need to give her a Cabinet job therefore to ensure he becomes PM or at least do a confidence and supply deal with her
She'd be utterly mad to do it - the end of the Conservative Party for sure.
To be fair though I am not sure if Kemi would be that bothered, if she was Farage's Deputy PM but at the price of the end of the Conservative Party would she really be that concerned or just shrug her shoulders? I think she might just shrug.
Cleverly on the other hand would never go into government with Farage, of that I am convinced. So if the Conservative Party wishes to ensure it survives as an independent party after the next general election Cleverly may be the only option if Kemi cannot at least keep the Tories second on votes and seats to Reform in May
It would be both the end of the Conservative Party and the death knell of Reform as the none-of-the-above party and previous Old Labour but anti-immigration voters. Uniting the Right but losing those strange Reform voters that think they are Left.
In the best, "you only sing when you're winning," tradition I am considering going to Dursey Island for a week and leaving my phone at home so as to avoid the result of the next GE for as long as possible.

I wonder what august office of state awaits our diastematic doyenne?
Who wouldn’t vote to unseat local Labour to kick Reeves out? It’s like Kier is the enemy of his own party.
Or it could be inspired messaging from the Mail. Whichever. Our lack of surprise proves Starmer to have poor respect from voters for his integrity and loyalty.

Kemi wouldn't accept that, she would want to be Farage's Foreign Secretary or Home Secretary at least, even if Jenrick is already Reform's Shadow Chancellor.
I was also wondering, what have the Welsh done to upset @Dura_Ace ?
Then I remembered 20mph speed limits...
I am very much in favour of 20mph limits. The transgression is the whole point.

Home Secretary would be a good call. She could then take the fall for the inevitable and total failure of Big Nige's ethnic cleansing policy.

To be honest though those voters aren't really that many, most Reform voters are ex Tories.

You have to be careful when barrelling through at 100mph.

I'm more concerned about active interference in the electoral process, now that there's a lot more officials in place in key areas, some of whom will have explicitly run on the basis that they would not have certified Trump's 2020 loss.
The Supreme Court should be helping out soon about ballots arriving post election days (which does feel weird, though whether it is unconstitutional is a separate question).
Not sure how the competitive gerrymandering is going, but I can believe the assessment it is cancelling itself out.

As I understand it a person in the audience behind Trump was very genuinely killed. It would be a pretty risky play to fire a live weapon towards your principal as part of a faked assassination attempt.

“Mr. Brusiloff drew his chair closer. “Let me tell you one vairy funny story about putting. It was one day I play at Nijni-Novgorod with the pro against Lenin and Trotsky, and Trotsky had a two-inch putt for the hole. But, just as he addresses the ball, someone in the crowd he tries to assassinate Lenin with a rewolwer—you know that is our great national sport, trying to assassinate Lenin with rewolwers—and the bang puts Trotsky off his stroke and he goes five yards past the hole, and then Lenin, who is rather shaken, you understand, he misses again himself, and we win the hole and match and I clean up three hundred and ninety-six thousand roubles, or fifteen shillings in your money. Some gameovitch!”

Well thanks to some considerable restraint from the many police at the event, they got the guy alive this time and he’ll be in court tomorrow.
Perhaps he hoped to be a martyr, or commit suicide by cop, but instead he’s looking at the rest of his life being spent in federal prison.

Yes, I cannot see the stamp duty mess precluding a run. There are no criminal charges and no-one understands it anyway, even if Rayner loses her case.
Angela Rayner remains favourite in the betting markets for next Prime Minister and next Labour leader.
Angela Rayner may have the right politics but she comes over as a bit thick to me.
Only Burnham can save Labour and we know he isn't currently eligible due to the Labour First mob putting control of the Party ahead of the good of the Party.
The likes of Luke Akehurst and at least 100 PLP members would rather Farage was PM than a soft left leader become PM.
I do not think Rayner is stupid but fear her lack of education might be held against her by PPE snobs in the broadcasters and broadsheets, cf Callaghan and Major to name but two.
Starmer studied law not PPE and Kemi did Computer Science at Sussex, Polanski went to Aberystwyth and studied drama and Farage didn't even go to university (even if he went to Dulwich, a major public school).
In fact of the main party leaders only Davey now studied PPE at Oxford (the LDs now arguably the natural party of the Remoaner civll service establishment)
Cousin of mine read maths at Aberystwyth. He was a bit odd, too. Is there something in the air there?
And Good Morning one and all.
I did a Masters there, Ydeothur studied there, King Charles III also went to Aberystwyth for a term to study Welsh. Indeed it is the only university in the UK attended by a UK monarch outside of Oxford or Cambridge (and once William becomes King St Andrews)
I did Class 37s to Aberystwyth on summer Saturdays.

According to Naomi Wolf, it is the Force. For it has a light side and a dark side.

Nothing. I spent 4 happy years hooning a Hawk around Ynys Mon.
Honestly, I don’t think Keir Starmer should lose his job over Peter Mandelson.
If Keir Starmer were to lose his job it should be because he has presided over a flatlining economy, higher inflation, failed energy policy, insane asylum policy, and the collapse of British housebuilding.
Standing for election, he promised to supercharge growth by banishing the blockers and getting Britain building.
What has actually happened? Housebuilding has collapsed. No serious blocker busting reform has been enacted. Last year just 5,547 new homes were started in London. That’s compared to Labour’s own (reduced) target of 88,000 per year.
This is an abject failure on an issue that Labour convinced many they would deliver fundamental change. And almost no one is talking about it.
The only change has been downwards. If our politics were serious, that is what Starmer would be booted out over.
The trouble with this analysis - even if one agrees that he shouldn't go for sacking a senior civil servant like this - is that Starmer would agree and conclude it is all Reeves' fault and she needs to be sacked next.

Trump is true evil and a stain on humanity .
It could have been catastrophic for the United States. Once you accept that murder is an acceptable part of the political process, where does it end? I do admire your honesty though. Some people seem determined to believe that people on the left aren't capable of violence, so it must be faked.

Under those circumstances the Tories would come under huge pressure to do some kind of deal (either coalition or confidence and supply) with Reform to 'prevent chaos' or 'recognise the will of the people'. There would be dire warnings of being punished by the electorate for forcing another general election. In other words the 2005 scenario.
The Tories should resist any such calls. It would be the 1923 General Election all over again and would send the Tories the same way as the Liberals. They should say that any of the potential governments would be a disaster and that they don't support any of them. Vote against a Reform King's Speech if needed. The question is whether Badenoch could whip all of her MPs to do that.

I haven't looked into this for a while, last time I did so I thought a plausible explanation was that no bullet had hit him directly but one had hit the teleprompter or some other shatterable hard object close to him and a shard from that had cut his ear ?

I haven't looked into this for a while, last time I did so I thought a plausible explanation was that no bullet had hit him directly but one had hit the teleprompter or some other shatterable hard object close to him and a shard from that had cut his ear ?
It's one thing to wake up and find there's been another firearms incident in the vicinity of Donald Trump. It's quite another to find pb in full on conspiracy mode. I'll make two points:
1) Trump is an incredibly dodgy character

I’m not sure that any such explanation is required. There are plenty of account of extremely minor wounds from near misses by bullets, dating back to the earliest days of firearms.

A lot of people seem to have some amnesia towards the second point. Anyway as much as I criticise the BBC I'll happily rely on Gary Donoghue's verdict for now. (He was actually there).
I think most people here don’t care about point 2
True I don’t care and neither does most of the world . Sadly an innocent person lost his life . If Trump had been wiped out most people would hold street parties .
Trump is true evil and a stain on humanity .
It could have been catastrophic for the United States. Once you accept that murder is an acceptable part of the political process, where does it end?
Trump assassinated several Iranian leaders, no?
Agree with it or not they were people with plenty of blood on their hands.
I take your point though. Trump does seem to like the persona of a mafia don. But he should still be removed from power by the ballot box and the legal system/constitution.

Trump as candidate certainly didn't have the collusion of the Government Agencies that you would need to pull off a false flag attack. They would simply detect that it was bullshit and expose him. Even if it was arranged by subordinates without his knowledge, it would have been disastrous for his campaign. I'm not sure even as President he has the support where needed to pull it off. Who in the deep state wants to help Trump enough to do something like this? I would suggest nobody.
I know its completely normal to mock the PM, but the actor playing Starmer can't keep a straight face repeating the ridiciliousness of basically what Starmer has been claiming.

Yes, and my understanding is that head wounds in general, even if very minor, bleed like billy-o, so they look worse than they are.

It could have been catastrophic for the United States. Once you accept that murder is an acceptable part of the political process, where does it end? I do admire your honesty though. Some people seem determined to believe that people on the left aren't capable of violence, so it must be faked.
I don’t think anyone should resort to violence and attack politicians. The data from the US shows that currently that violence is more likely to come from the extreme right . And we shouldn’t avoid that Trump has been the catalyst for even more polarisation in the USA.
If Trump had been taken out yes I do get your point that it’s very bad but I won’t pretend that my first emotion wouldn’t be good riddance to him . I believe he is true evil , a man without a shred of humanity or compassion .

We will now see 10s of people do it. As soon as Kipchoge did it, it was clear it could be done.
Yep, Kipchoge’s exhibition run proved that two hours was possible - in perfect conditions and with pacemakers not allowed for a record.
It’s been said before, but it’s a frightening pace, 21km/h, 17s/100m, 420 times in a row! Most treadmills in gyms don’t go that fast.
We're so used to watching amazing feats of physical prowess through professional sports that even though we know 99% of people could not do even half of it, we underestimate just how astonishing many athletes are.
Marathon runners should be way more acclaimed than 100m stars.

nearly killed my butt, supposedly had bit of ear shot off which surprisingly regrew and healed perfectly.

I try not to be closed-minded about conspiracies but that's a bold claim.
Next you'll be saying the moon landings were real. A little bit of thought and it is pretty clear that the cheese the moon is made of would all have melted away with the heat from a rocket launch.
So you believe in the moon, huh?
The moon is flat, that's why you can only see one side from earth.
According to Naomi Wolf, it is the Force. For it has a light side and a dark side.

I remember going to the world cross country and the blokes went off and I thought I see they have gone off fast sprinting to get position, 15 minutes later, still the same pace.
There is a company who makes a giant treadmill for industry that can go upto pace of elite marathon runners and I presume as part of some viral marketing there are loads of clips of even club althetes trying to run on it for a matter of seconds and they can't keep the pace.
I know its completely normal to mock the PM, but the actor playing Starmer can't keep a straight face repeating the ridiciliousness of basically what Starmer has been claiming.
The American version of this programme is spectacularly unfunny. Not remotely tempted to try the UK one.

SNL used to be funny back in the day. It still has the odd funny sketch, but very poor these days. The new guy they have doing Trump is terrible at it. At least Baldwin could do a good Trump impression.

Somewhat against most expectations, SNLUK does actually appear to be funny in places.

I haven't watched a full episode. I fear it is probably the one sketch per show that is half decent is the one that gets shared on social media, the tv execs will say we are getting amazing cut through on social media, but the numbers actually watching the full episodes (and the quality of the sketches) is probably poor. They have got somebody who can do a decent rip off of Starmer helps.

I’m not sure of this. It’s been 7 years since the first sub 2h marathon, albeit not a legal race, so no WR. After 4 min mile we now have a mile WR of 3.41 ( I think), so there was clearly a lot more improvement to go. There isn’t the same scope with the marathon. No one is going to run 1.45 for instance. But I am sure there will be more under 2h, just not loads more.

I think the gap between normies and elites has become so enormous with all the modern science backed training. You are already taking the top 1 of 1 of 1%, but now controlling everything about their lives for 10+ years all to optimise performance. Even sports you don't associate necessarily with supreme strength e.g. cricket, the likes of Stokes are absolute units. That is why even drunk Stokes had little problem putting two attackers down. The rubgy guys are no longer beer swigging fatties, they just absolute gym monsters. Even supposed not that "strong" people like Freddie Steward, I saw him in person a few months ago, he is an absolute giant unit who no normie would want to try and stop when running at full pelt (yet on the pitch other players put him down quite easily).
We have had a Reform election leaflet delivered, for the forthcoming County Council elections. Very little of it is actually about what Reform 'will' do for Essex, apart possibly from stopping asylum seekers being house in hotels...... they aren't any more AIUI. And one whole side is intended to be displayed in a window and says 'Support Reform" and in smaller type "Get Starmer out"
I'm not aware of any opportunity to vote for Sir Keir in Essex, let alone Braintree!

Back in the 90s when I was at uni I played first team rugby. I also watched Bath. I genuinely believed if they were short I could have played. Not been good, but wouldn’t have looked stupid. It was the era before giant front rows, and I wasn’t far off Graham Daws stature, for instance.
Now a days I watch Bath and the size, power, and pace is worlds away. Some change in 30 years.

I know somebody who works with a couple of Gallagher Premiership teams and he says their gym programmes are insane. I have my suspisions about how some might achieve that especially early on in careers.

I think he has to go.
.
Indeed 59% of Reform voters in a survey taken after last year's local elections voted for Boris and the Conservatives in 2019 and just 7% voted for Corbyn and Labour in 2019, even fewer than the 9% who voted for the Brexit Party in 2019 (p19)

How much can Trump milk this for ?

The Supreme Court should be helping out soon about ballots arriving post election days (which does feel weird, though whether it is unconstitutional is a separate question).
Not sure how the competitive gerrymandering is going, but I can believe the assessment it is cancelling itself out.

Congratulations Sebastian Sawe and Tigst Assefa.
Not sure I could run half a marathon in two hours.

I take your point though. Trump does seem to like the persona of a mafia don. But he should still be removed from power by the ballot box and the legal system/constitution.
NEW: Starmer’s fightback
-PM pushing for new policy options including accelerating clean energy plans and new offer to young people
-Why one cabinet minister thinks 1,500 lost seats in May would trigger a “collective nervous breakdown”
-The MPs being eyed to stand aside for Andy Burnham

You know Asia is truly short of crude oil when Japanese television covers the arrival of a single oil tanker from America as a major news story

It’s been said before, but it’s a frightening pace, 21km/h, 17s/100m, 420 times in a row! Most treadmills in gyms don’t go that fast.

I know its completely normal to mock the PM, but the actor playing Starmer can't keep a straight face repeating the ridiciliousness of basically what Starmer has been claiming.
If Trump had been taken out yes I do get your point that it’s very bad but I won’t pretend that my first emotion wouldn’t be good riddance to him . I believe he is true evil , a man without a shred of humanity or compassion .

Marathon runners should be way more acclaimed than 100m stars.
There is a company who makes a giant treadmill for industry that can go upto pace of elite marathon runners and I presume as part of some viral marketing there are loads of clips of even club althetes trying to run on it for a matter of seconds and they can't keep the pace.
Some photographers at events shoot video now, and pick frames.
"Right. *I* have to be careful what *I* shoot at?"

I'm not aware of any opportunity to vote for Sir Keir in Essex, let alone Braintree!

Spoiler alert: there’s not much of it left!
Now a days I watch Bath and the size, power, and pace is worlds away. Some change in 30 years.
I sort of see the point, if you’re going to have an expensive, meaningless symbol of Britishness, it might as well have a UJ on it.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/other-sport/eilish-mccolgans-10k-record-invalid-after-run-course-found-to-be-150m-short-3885824 Eilish set what she thought was a British record for the 10k road race, but when the ratification team from UK Athletics measured the course afterwards it was 150m short.
It would be very embarrasing indeed if two world records got binned because someone can’t measure the course properly.
NFL of course where they take an incredibly lack view of PEDs, its absolute freak show of human performance.
