It’s so funny how people of supposed intelligence have answered “why don’t we need a law to stop people being afraid of Hindus, Sikhs, Jews and Christians?” with “well, people are afraid of X”
Are you trying to Starmer me with an answer to a completely different question?
"When a Jewish News journalist pointed out that similarly large single sex prayer events are also held by Orthodox Jews in London, Badenoch’s representative replied that the Iftar event was “different”, without explaining how."
Well that's ok then!
Timothy must go?
If she fails to answer the question fully if put to her, she should consider her position too?
Kudos to the Jewish News journalist who skewers the hypocrisy in Nick Timothy's bleatings.
There's a notion out there Muslims are somehow given "special treatment" and other religions are ignored or disadvantaged. Certainly, in my part of the world, Hindu, Sikh, Orthodox and Christian religious events are observed,
Diwali and especially Onam (Keralan) are observed in East Ham as is the birthday of Guru Nanak when there is a Sikh parade down the High Street.
Why does nobody need to be ordered not to fear Hindus, Sikhs, Jews and Christians?
If you've been in areas of Leicester and Birmingham when Sikhs and Hindus clash, to football matches in Glasgow or when various Jewish factions clash, you'll understand there are wrong uns and excesses in all religions.
Islamaphobia is far more common than the others combined because our media is dominated by haters of Islam
1 0 Starmer though as Nick Timothy is fatally wounded.
She’s not going to sack Nick Timothy for expressing an obvious truth
But it's bollocks. People praying freely is not an "act of domination" unless one is some sort of weirdo banging on about an Open Iftar event and how unpatriotic that would be, and looking for clicks/ likes. We had one on here last evening. Can't remember which dreary poster it was though.
It's the complete truth, even you know it. The difference is that up until now no one has been brave enough to say it. Nick Timothy has decided to speak out. Well done him
Nick Timothy gets serious death threats for his pains, which rather proves his point
Oh behave. You as one of our foremost print journalists should know that unhinged threats come from all sides. And all should be condemned equally.
The last MP murdered, David Amess, was killed by an Islamist attacker. So it's not like Timothy is being all precious about his safety. He is bravely wading into dangerous territory
And the penultimate murdered MP was executed by an extreme right wing nutter. You can frame your narrative how you wish, but that doesn't stop it being misleading.
We clearly disagree mainly because you're stupid. I do not see how this can be usefully resolved, unless you become cleverer

There may he wrong uns in all religions, but most religions in Britain don't tend to murder in the name of their religions.
Currently it is mostly Islamic fundamentalism, sure. In my childhood it was mostly the Catholics and Protestants with the bombs and shootings. Maybe in my later years it will be someone else. It is fundamentalism that is the problem, whatever the flavour.
Religion often just provides a veneer over an underlying political conflict about power and identity rather than being the cause of it, so it can be an illusion to think that isolating fundamentalists and elevating 'moderate' voices is the key to avoiding trouble.
Fascist minded arseholes will turn any creed into murderous lunacy.
Look what the Imperial Japanese Army did with Buddhism. You might think that “respect all living things” would put a dent in the Saturday afternoon recreational completion. Beheading Chinese civilians, that is.
But no, it was all AOK.
Ahem - Shintoism.
Shinto was one part.
But it took the Buddhist Japanese Grand Masters declaring that Chinese people were lower than lice to keep the beheading competition… rolling.

Where Buddhism is concerned, I raise you the Buddhist Sinhalese fighting the predominantly Hindu Tamils in Sri Lanka during the 1980s and 1990s, and the Buddhist Burmese attacking the Muslim Rohingyas of Burma in more recent times.

That's a category error though. They weren't bombing and killing because of religion. It was good old fashioned nationalism. The Pope wasn't decreeing that people who were a bit dusobliging about Catholicism must be killed. You didn't get murders for apostasy. You didn't get fundamentalist Protestants blowing up arenas where pop concerts were taking place because the concept of women acting independently appalled their religious sensibilities. They weren't shouting "Jesus is brilliant" as they kneecapped their victims.

You need to speak to some Sikhs, plenty of them fear Hindus.
'When a mighty tree falls, it is only natural that the earth around it does shake a little.'
Should the Sikhs’ Hinduphobia be banned?
Religionphobia should be legal. A religion is a philosophy, being islamophobic is no different to being conservativephobic.
Do we think most of the people banging on about Muslims polluting western society are just intellectually, morally and philosophically offended by the tenets of Islam and the Koran?
By the same token do those who criticise Israel, come what may, do so because they don’t like Jews ?
If it's 'come what may', yes that's a red flag. Their recent and current actions, sadly, give cause for anybody other than pro-Israel zealots to criticise and this, also sadly, gives cover for antisemites (of left and right) to 'express themselves'.

UK Military have not joined Israel and United States in the war on Iran.
Defensive actions by our own military to defend ourselves and allies is not the same as being at war, as US and Israel clearly are. Nor is allowing your own airfields to be used to hit Defensive Only targets, considered being at state offensive war.
Anyone trying to claim UK is a belligerent in this war is both inviting Iran to target and kill us, at same time justifying Iran firing at other gulf states who would by definition similarly be “at offensive war” - you would also be making the claim UK is involved in illegal acts in an illegal war - so we need to be very careful what we are implying.
UK is not the only Nation in Defensive Only mode in this conflict.
Airfields used for Defensive Only missions is easily policed, and, clearly, even at this stage a lot of defensive missions on drone mine and missile stockpiles are yet to be run.
How "Defensive Only" is Policed Easy to do. Not difficult. Policing these restrictions uses straightforward monitoring and verification: * Intelligence and Surveillance (ISR): Host nations use their own intelligence assets to monitor the types of aircraft, munitions, and flight plans of U.S. forces leaving their bases. * Air Traffic Control (ATC): Host country military personnel in control towers can track the flight paths and destinations of aircraft to ensure they are not heading for unauthorized targets. * Operational Liaison Officers: Joint operations centers often feature liaison officers from the host nation who monitor real-time operations and verify that they comply with the agreed restrictions.
Statement “Starmer/Britain joined this war’ is FALSE. So far.

I am morally and philosophically offended by the tenets of Islam. Submit or have your throat struck is a touch OTT for me
If you were a Christian then you should turn the other cheek.
Either that or aknowledge that there is a big difference between how a religion actually behaves compared to its original texts.
I imagine some lefty doctor was saying the same on Persian PB in the early 70s. I doubt he made it to the 80s
So you do not believe that Christians should follow the teachings or example of Jesus as laid out in the Gospels and New Testament?

There's a notion out there Muslims are somehow given "special treatment" and other religions are ignored or disadvantaged. Certainly, in my part of the world, Hindu, Sikh, Orthodox and Christian religious events are observed,
Diwali and especially Onam (Keralan) are observed in East Ham as is the birthday of Guru Nanak when there is a Sikh parade down the High Street.
Why does nobody need to be ordered not to fear Hindus, Sikhs, Jews and Christians?
You need to speak to some Sikhs, plenty of them fear Hindus.

So far.
Unless Starmer is restricting B52 bombing targets from Fairford then he is enabling them
This is the defensive offensive argument again
Meloni and Sanchez have expressly forbidden that which Starmer has not

It slightly closes down a lively debate but SFAICS the big common trait of those who act abominably is that they are people, with a secondary characteristic that they are mostly men. I don't think non-religion, non-religious philosophies, active atheism, religion or theism of any sort is going to be the real main driver, whatever the appearance. Stalin's atrocities don't really belong to atheistic Marxism. They belond to a more general inhumanity.
Humanism (including my sort) has a great deal of explaining to do. It is not at all obvious that we are as special as we like to imagine.

I have read the Koran (in translation of course) and frankly it is pretty hard going without a good explanatory supporting text. The non-linear ordering of the Surahs, poetic and circumlutory language and obscure references make it quite hard to follow. Rather like the Bible it is good in parts, less so in others.

As a boring liberal Christian I don't care for it when people tell me what my religion is and then attack me for holding to things I don't hold. If you like to think that the Islamic bridesmaid at my very Christian daughter's very Christian wedding in her heart really wanted to slit our throats you are allowed to, but I think you are mistaken, and I think you are missing out on a huge treasure of spirituality, wisdom and culture., and I think you are being unfair and discourteous to some lovely people.

The Bible which I read in RS says we should stone a woman to death for adultery.
Slavery is fine and dandy in the New Testament too.
Christianity had, and continues to have, reformations

That one was updated, and rendered obsolete, in the Gospels in one of the most famous accounts of all ! You should have finished the book.
John 8: "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4nd said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
“No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
Only because politicians are not willing to have the painful discussions and announcements about the reality we live in.
Ideally Iran will be a long enough problem that some of our long standing issues become some obvious that they have to be addressed or at least hinted at or discussed

I didn't mention Muslims. I judged the Quran
If any books should be banned for inciting racial hatred..
Well thats the Old Testament/Torah in the bin too!
I taught an adult class of mainly Muslims for several years including an Imam. They wanted me to become Muslim, but I demurred. My throat remained unslit despite being outnumbered 20 to 1.

When I came back to work after my enforced absence last year, when I first delivered a parcel to Mr Mohammed on my route, he asked where I’d been for months. When I told him, he showed real compassion, and has regularly asked about my recovery over the intervening months

It is easy to fail to comprehend the subtle relationship between an ancient text, or set of texts, and a global community of literally billions. It gives rise to assertions like: 'Christians believe the Old Testamen so are obliged to believe that God might order you to commit genocide and punish you if you don't do it well enough.'
Which, in my experience, is not how our local Methodist ladies fellowship go about things. But I shall keep an open mind. Islam too goes about things in various subtle, often kindly, ways.

Sure, the Koran is accepted as the literal word of God, as indeed the Bible is by many Protestant sects.
But there is 1500 years of theological exegenesis of the Koran which has considerably altered how the Koran is interpreted, with extensive debate around this.
If you have a genuine interest in understanding the Koran, its theology and how it has influenced and been influenced by both continuing Christian and Jewish theology then I highly recommend "A History of God" by Karen Armstrong.

It's easy to blame "the public" but politicians of all stripes have failed to be honest about the public finances and the degree to which decisions like the COVID furlough scheme have left us with a mountain of debt and having to use tax revenues not to fund the NHS or defence but simply to pay off the interest.
We continue to run an unsustainable leaflet but two generations of dishonesty have left many believing we can both cut taxes and increase spending at the same time without consequences.
The problem is a prolonged period of static growth has left us struggling to reduce borrowing and unfortunately the dishonesty of the debate has closed off the more obvious options of raising basic rate tax and/or VAT in favour of more pernicious and less effective tax raising options just at the point when the need to spend more on social care and defence has come to the fore.
I should add this lack of honesty didn't begin on July 5th 2024 but has become inculcated in our political debate over the past 20-30 years.

Personally I have no problem with any religion or organisation ocasionally taking over public spaces for events. There is a big one this weekend on Victoria Park this weekend for Eid. The same park is also used for the Carribean Carnival, music festivals, Remembrance commemorations and mostly for cricket games.

Though having the MAGA endorsement doesn't always go well for candidates outside the USA. So let's hope we see a touch of that reverse Midas touch on Orban.

Although the Triple Lock really needed an offramp built into it when it was introduced, it is also a bit of a "one weird trick they don't want you to know" to solve our problems- in other words, tosh.
Looking at the OBR's numbers, we're currently spending 5% of GDP on the state pension. WIth the Triple Lock in place, it probably takes until about 2050 to hit 6%. That sort of change isn't ruinous of itself. It's a problem if you want to cut taxes, but that's another issue entirely.
(The interesting thing is how much volatility affects the cost of the Triple Lock. The difference between the stable inflation of the nineties and the spiky inflation since 2010 is about 3% of GDP on the pension bill by 2070. Makes sense and all that- if prices spike and then wages spike later in response, it's double bubble for OAPs, but striking to see the effect.)

I have no issue with people having faith. I personally am an atheist. I do find aspects of the link in Islam to identity and mysogeny to be chaallenging in a western liberal context. A strongly patriarchal society does not sit easily in the world of eqquaal rights, equality and diversity etc. There is also no doubt that some Muslims do wish to see Islam take over the world. And at the moment a terrorist a attack is most likely to be inspired by a perverted creed of Islam, so people are naturally afraid.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared all Iranians working in the military and security attachés offices in Doha as persona non grata, ordering them to leave Qatar and return to Iran within the next 24 hours, following tonight’s Iranian ballistic missile attack against QatarEnergy’s Ras Laffan Industrial City.
Brains Trust: Can anyone recommend a good, fairly powerful, head torch - for late evening walking.
I've picked up a Silva Seek 450, which is great but not really powerful enough fro everything..
Recommendations welcome.
I still have an ancient Petzl Zoom, new head (LED), new handle, but Petzl do make some ridiculously bright head torches (Duo? Nao?). They aren't cheap, mind. @Eabhal is probably the man to ask.
I very rarely use one - even when walking off Scottish hills in January - unless the terrain is really rough. There's something to be said for navigating by the light of Venus...
The News Agents have had it with Kemi Badenoch. Her support for Nick Timothy is a very bizarre decision. As SKS says she's even being shown up by Tommy Robinson.

This will now happen across the Gulf. Going to be a lot of remissions back home not happening.
1 0 Starmer though as Nick Timothy is fatally wounded.
She’s not going to sack Nick Timothy for expressing an obvious truth
Let the lefties stand by while we allow ourselves to become an Islamic nation. Well said Nick Timothy and well done Kemi for backing him up
What utter nonsense. We are not becoming "an Islamic nation".
Timothy is just indulging in shit stirring bordering on Islamophobia.
I've been weakly Islamophobic ever since the Salman Rushdie thing kicked off in '89.
The fundamentalists are indeed scary beings. Also true of some of the nuttier fundamentalists in the US (Hegseth's pastor, for example).
You've never met a bigoted Presbytarian Unionist is Northern Ireland then?
The only couple of times I've visited, everyone I encountered was charming. (Though the first time was at the start of the troubles in Belfast, and there were distant explosions all night.)
I've been a couple of times. As you say, normally everyone's very pleasant indeed. However, just now and again......
Actually my worst experience was on the mainland, with a visitor from Ulster, At a social event I was asked what I thought of the situation in Ulster. I was a guest so said, I thought diplomatically, that it was difficult for someone in Essex to tell. Got a mouthful about how it was all the Catholics, should all be shot.
I'd go regularly to meet teams for seminars.
We would do protestants one day, catholics the next, not always in that order, but almost totally segregated.
It was interesting that a few with no religious or political side would all be with the Catholics. A few on private said they felt more welcomed.
We always had a great time with both, work and socially.
Charming friendly company.
At one time I regularly met with professional colleagues from Northern Ireland. As you say charming friendly company.
It was just now and again.
The most remarkable postscript was the incredible personal friendship of the Reverend Ian Paisley and Martin McGuiness
I am morally and philosophically offended by the tenets of Islam. Submit or have your throat struck is a touch OTT for me
Have you read the Koran? I read it in the 1980s and I didn't interpret what I read in the same way Ayatollah Khomeini did.
The Bible which I read in RS says we should stone a woman to death for adultery.
Not a Christian. Not religious. But there is some brilliant philosophy and guidance in the New Testament that anyone who wants to live a moral life will follow.

Slavery is fine and dandy in the New Testament too.
Mauretania was the last country to abolish slavery, as recently as 1981.

Are you trying to Starmer me with an answer to a completely different question?
But it took the Buddhist Japanese Grand Masters declaring that Chinese people were lower than lice to keep the beheading competition… rolling.
“If you don’t endorse every point of view as equally valid, we will make you drink weak tea. Or else we will nuke the planet.”
A lamentable, scrutiny-phobic PMQs. Starmer's belief in his own moral superiority while behaving disgracefully never ceases to amaze
Either that or aknowledge that there is a big difference between how a religion actually behaves compared to its original texts.
Breaking: The IDF confirms it has struck the Iranian naval fleet in the Caspian Sea. The fleet had been used during the war in Ukraine to transfer equipment from Iran to Russia.
“Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we lived, or why we died. No, all that matters is that two offered weak tea and acceptance to many. That's what's important! Vague niceness pleases you, Crom... so grant me one request. Grant me lots of platitudes! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!"
Starmer did not.
Policing these restrictions uses straightforward monitoring and verification:
* Intelligence and Surveillance (ISR): Host nations use their own intelligence assets to monitor the types of aircraft, munitions, and flight plans of U.S. forces leaving their bases.
So far.
If any books should be banned for inciting racial hatred..
I'm an atheist. I don't care how righteous christians might be, or not
But the bible says turn the other cheek, the Quran says strike the infidel's throat
I can easily judge the better of those
This is the defensive offensive argument again
Meloni and Sanchez have expressly forbidden that which Starmer has not
Humanism (including my sort) has a great deal of explaining to do. It is not at all obvious that we are as special as we like to imagine.

Only the medieval Quran is accepted

Ideally Iran will be a long enough problem that some of our long standing issues become some obvious that they have to be addressed or at least hinted at or discussed
They wanted me to become Muslim, but I demurred.
My throat remained unslit despite being outnumbered 20 to 1.
We asked 100 people if you spoke directly with Peter Mandelson prior to appointing him after you found out his best mate was a nonce
You said
“Muslims Praying”
We got on fine before this, but he’s now on my list of favourite places to deliver to. But I still believe that what he believes in is fundamentally flawed
We never need to discuss it, unless he tries to convert me. I doubt that he will
Which, in my experience, is not how our local Methodist ladies fellowship go about things. But I shall keep an open mind. Islam too goes about things in various subtle, often kindly, ways.
Cutting planning red tape will take the UK from laggard to leader in connectivity
I’m encouraged that the government is consulting on changes to the planning laws to make building sites easier.
Let’s get to it.

What exactly did they think would happen? That Iran would capitulate? That it would open the Strait of Hormuz under pressure?
The very foundation of this campaign appears to rest on a profound misunderstanding and a severe underestimation of Iran.
Iran does not behave this way.

Moderate Islam does not exist
If I can’t criticise Islam without attacking Muslims, then Islam needs taming

More US interference in an election .
JD Vance is going to Hungary to support Orban .
Just imagine the Deputy PM of another country went to the USA to support a Dem against Trump .
Personally I have no problem with any religion or organisation ocasionally taking over public spaces for events. There is a big one this weekend on Victoria Park this weekend for Eid. The same park is also used for the Carribean Carnival, music festivals, Remembrance commemorations and mostly for cricket games.
What is wrong with that?
I suspect were Russia to took over Ukraine an Orban lead Hungary would surrender quicker than France did in 1940.
BREAKING: Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared Iran’s Military Attaché, Security Attaché, and all attaché office staff persona non grata, ordering them to leave the country within 24 hours.
(Source: https://obr.uk/frs/fiscal-risks-and-sustainability-july-2025/#chapter-2)
