I had expected that Trump would have ended the war by now, so I'm losing my confidence that it will end soon and the world economy return to something approaching normality.
OK as everyone is trying to take my job as the PB Panjandrum of Pessimism I’m going to have a bash at optimism. In the sun
Let’s say the war lasts two more weeks. By that time Israel and the USA have absolutely pulverised Iran into the dust, so it won’t be a threat for a generation. Trump declares victory
Yes there is a horrible oil price spike but as the war ends everything reopens quickly. Iran needs the money. Dubai is damaged but it will bounce back
There is a relief rally. Stocks surge. Pressure for regime change in Iran actually begins to succeed. Meanwhile without his Iranian friends to help, Putin has no choice but to seek a peace in Ukraine
The world, remarkably, takes a massive turn for the better
Why not?
I quite like it, but keep the camera rolling for a few more weeks......
The Israelis know that they can con the White House into doing stupid things, so they think of a few more ... greater security in Lebanon, lebensraum into Egypt or whatever. So they start firing missiles again, and the US is tricked into joining in again. Trump gains kudos for "doing a Vietnam (i.e. declaring a victory, and going home.) Unfortunately, he then recognises himself as a Triumphant War Leader, a veritable Wellington de nos jours, so feels compelled to invade Mexico, or Canada, or Greenland or similar, in order to Build a Wall or liberate some polar bears or whatever. Even if Iran is a "success" for Trump, it will only encourage him to go on to make things worse. Maybe it's for the best if it drags on for a few more months in order to 1) keep him busy, and 2) re-educate the American voters.
Trump (and the people around him) will go for Cuba.
Cuba eluded JFK. Being remembered for getting it under Uncle Sam's thumb will be just too tempting for Trump's ego.
Yes, you're probably right - especially as 1) Cuba is now an economic basket case without Nicaraguan support, and 2) there's a lot of Cuban exiles in Florida.
1 0 Starmer though as Nick Timothy is fatally wounded.

Let the lefties stand by while we allow ourselves to become an Islamic nation. Well said Nick Timothy and well done Kemi for backing him up
What utter nonsense. We are not becoming "an Islamic nation".
Timothy is just indulging in shit stirring bordering on Islamophobia.
I've been weakly Islamophobic ever since the Salman Rushdie thing kicked off in '89.
The fundamentalists are indeed scary beings. Also true of some of the nuttier fundamentalists in the US (Hegseth's pastor, for example).
You've never met a bigoted Presbytarian Unionist is Northern Ireland then?
The only couple of times I've visited, everyone I encountered was charming. (Though the first time was at the start of the troubles in Belfast, and there were distant explosions all night.)
I've been a couple of times. As you say, normally everyone's very pleasant indeed. However, just now and again......
Actually my worst experience was on the mainland, with a visitor from Ulster, At a social event I was asked what I thought of the situation in Ulster. I was a guest so said, I thought diplomatically, that it was difficult for someone in Essex to tell. Got a mouthful about how it was all the Catholics, should all be shot.
I'd go regularly to meet teams for seminars.
We would do protestants one day, catholics the next, not always in that order, but almost totally segregated.
It was interesting that a few with no religious or political side would all be with the Catholics. A few on private said they felt more welcomed.
We always had a great time with both, work and socially.
Charming friendly company.
At one time I regularly met with professional colleagues from Northern Ireland. As you say charming friendly company.
It was just now and again.
The most remarkable postscript was the incredible personal friendship of the Reverend Ian Paisley and Martin McGuiness

I cannot begin to fathom why Israel has blown up the Iranian gas field.
That is a last resort card you hold close to your chest. The US should have held them in check.

One wildcard would be a major terrorist attack. If that happens, there's no way there'll be any deescalation from Trump.

Don't worry. It will all be over by October when Israel holds their elections. You may as well go on holiday* as nothing will be resolved until then.

This is a character I find interesting in NI politics at present - Rev Jamie Bambrick, of Hope Church Craigavon.
He is the Pastor of a Church of Ireland church (ie a Vicar), who comes across as arguing the a case closer to an informed credal (ie religion based) Christian Nationalism than anyone else I have heard in the UK. He seems much more authoritarian than eg Jamie Bambrick, and argues for a patterning of society along imposed-religion lines, which is unusual in the UK - most of the far/extreme right do not know what it means.
OK as everyone is trying to take my job as the PB Panjandrum of Pessimism I’m going to have a bash at optimism. In the sun

It's far from impossible.
If the Iranian government is willing to... play dead, because they're sick of being attacked, and if they can no longer threaten the Straits of Hormuz, then that works. Or if a new Iranian leader takes over who's willing to enter into a negotiated peace - Straits open, no nuclear, no funding for Israel's enemies, then that also works. It's also possible that there is a revolution in Iran.
However, there's also the issue that the Iranian government might reckon it can outlast Israel and the US. There's only so much damage you can do with bombs and missiles, unless you're willing to go nuclear. (See Ukraine; I remember someone who thought that electricity being cut off would cause the government to fall.)
According to the Ukrainians the Russians suffered over 1700 casualties yesterday for zero territorial gains. The vast bulk of these were killed by drones who massacred the advancing forces trying to take advantage of fog but were all too visible to the drones.
Over the last month or so there have been increasing signs that the war in Ukraine is turning Ukraine's way. They have actually gained a fair bit of territory. The persistent drone attacks on Moscow are utterly humiliating for Putin showing the inadequacy of the air defence systems. The lethality of drones seems to be increasing to the point that the numerical advantage in soldiers that the Russians have means less and less.
My bit of anti-pessimism for the day is that the war in Ukraine might be over sooner than we think and with a clear Ukrainian victory. The consequences of a defeated Russia are not straightforward and there are clear risks of chaos there but such a success will mean that the conventional risk to Western Europe will largely have disappeared allowing us much more time to separate ourselves from the US.
I hope this is right, though I fear that the combination of a boost to Russian oil income and a halt to US ammunition deliveries might swing things back in Russia's favour.
The Russian government was getting close to running out of money before the US attacked Iran. It's been such a monumental blunder.
Yes this moronic war really doesn’t help but I am trying to be positive.
I had expected that Trump would have ended the war by now, so I'm losing my confidence that it will end soon and the world economy return to something approaching normality.

There's a notion out there Muslims are somehow given "special treatment" and other religions are ignored or disadvantaged. Certainly, in my part of the world, Hindu, Sikh, Orthodox and Christian religious events are observed,
Diwali and especially Onam (Keralan) are observed in East Ham as is the birthday of Guru Nanak when there is a Sikh parade down the High Street.
Has Timothy shifted his position much over the last several years? I've noticed him from time to time, but he's not one I have followed.

Yeah but you're an outlier as the dogs you stir up beyond the letterbox don't have religions.
The fact the negative impact on the economy and rising prices as a result especially of fuel is seen as the main impact of the Iran strikes is no surprise. However the biggest political impact is likely to be for Trump with the GOP likely losing the midterms and Congress to the Democrats in November. Starmer did not commit UK forces to offensive strikes so will likely get away without too much damage, though he might want to expand North Sea drilling to restore our own oil supplies

Islamaphobia is far more common than the others combined because our media is dominated by haters of Islam

I think that's a shade sanguine as we don't know what the medium term impact of a prolonged closure of Hormuz is likely to be in terms of the oil price and our old friends supply and demand. IF we get to a prolonged period of shortage, that will cause a lot of problems and if $100 a barrel is the new price for oil, that has inflationary and growth consequences.
I suspect even if we agreed to re-start North Sea drilling tomorrow, it will be months if not longer before that has any impact.

The Russian government was getting close to running out of money before the US attacked Iran. It's been such a monumental blunder.
Well, it's swings and roundabouts for the Russian government. They've just got a vital foreign currency lifeline. On the other hand, Iran is a key ally and supplier of drones and other military equipment.
The worst of all worlds for the Russian government is that Iran falls, and the Straits of Hormuz reopen - especially if there's a new pliant Iranian/Persian regimie. (Albeit, damaged production equipment is likely to take time to be replaced, and so Iranian oil won't be on the world market for a long while regardless.)
Blogger Ilya Remeslo grew even bolder and went on to write about Putin’s children. And that didn’t seem enough to him, so he added that the Russian dictator actually needs to see a psychoanalyst.
I'm surprised that people are relatively positive about Iran not getting the bomb. I feel the opposite is more likely. Iran can surely see how MAD has deterred the US from inflicting real pain on Russia, and kept North Korea ticking over. I would be amazed if Iran does not get the bomb in the long-term as a consequence of the current conflict. I also expect many other countries to do likewise.
Experts on Iran seem to think as you do as far as I can see.
Their need to get the bomb just got a whole lot bigger.
It's not complicated is it? Nobody has done a damn thing about North Korea who routinely threaten the US. The US has systems meant to defeat a limited strike precisely because they worry about the North Korea regime collapsing and firing off a few nukes as a last-gasp measure, so this is not some idle threat, the US has spent many billions of dollars on preparing for such an attack. But those nukes have meant that the regime itself faces limited pressure from other states.
On the other hand Venezuela and Iran have been attacked by the US, and Canada, Greenland/Denmark, Cuba, Mexico and more have been threatened. It's seems fairly obvious that if you want to stop attacks and threats from the US then possessing a nuclear weapon would help. We've now got multiple countries openly talking about the need to aquire nuclear weapons, mainly due to Russia but the US threat doesn't look any less worrying, and there are almost certainly other states discussing the issue privately.
It would be genuinely amazing if this period of instability and threats doesn't lead to many new nuclear weapons states.

I think Kemi dropped the ball.

There may he wrong uns in all religions, but most religions in Britain don't tend to murder in the name of their religions.
Now, CAF may or may not be corrupt as Senegal claim, but to my mind they should have been disqualified the instant they stormed off the field in a protest*, and if the rules don't require that then they should be changed to ensure it is - you cannot have players protesting referee decisions (wrong though many are) by storming off, then allowing it because are really mad or something. And even if there were other matters going on which reasonably made Senegal angry - which there clearly was, looks like a shitshow - the solution is not to flippantly protest and walk off. Do that and you lose the game, period.
* the story suggests that the referee allowed it to continue could be very significant to any appeal

Wait! Does it? Does evasion point to the fact he didn’t?
I thought the evasion was all pointing to the fact he had spoken to him before appointment, to be honest. That - speaking to Mandy himself and getting answer he had met with Epstein after the conviction - surely is where the damage and danger is to Starmer.
I think Kemi dropped the ball.
Stsrmer has put on record in the house that Mandelson lied to him personally. If she gets him to admit he did not speak to him its misleading the house time.
Thats the point of it i think
It’s an odd way for her to do it, answering the question herself, with her belief it was the opposite of what the truth is, opposite to where the danger to Starmer is.
Nah. She dropped the ball.
His obvious answered should be, which one of the hundreds of conversations I've had with Peter on hundreds of issues over 20 years does she specifically want me to comments on.
You want to tie Starmer that close to Mandelson and somehow that helps him
No Tory has never had an acquaintance with a paedo?
Mandelson has been a major Labour political figure for 30 years
Your point is?
If you can't see the connection to your suggestion then you are oblivious to what you are writing
The expression you protest too much
Starmer had a nightmare today
Questions smoking out how rubbish Labour are on cost of living would have been a more triumphant PMQs for Kemi IMHO.
I still think, learning from history, 6 questions on Mandelson was wasted approach. in the history books on Mandelson leaving government for mortgage fraud, all the pressure put on Tony Blair for whopping error of judgement, all the fun Lord Richmond and the media had ripping Blair’s credibility to shreds… but then look at the final result in 2001 GE. 🤷♀️
Kemi’s Tory’s need to put on votes at PMQs, and the way to do that is how Labour do nothing or next to nothing on the cost of living. Look at the Daily Express today, look what they gave Kemi to attack with Labour policies taking 40K from households during cost of living crisis is awful.
Is the fear here, Kemi goes on Mandelson again and again because she can’t mention Cost of Living ever again because the error she has made backing Trump’s war? ☹️
Why are you liking this post Brixian?
Labour been in two years, and have appalling record on cost of living, is why it’s losing one and a half thousand councillors in a few weeks time in an extra special stuffing.
Do you think UK tax rates are too low, and there’s plenty of leeway for more tax and spend?
Im agreeing with you two fold
LOTO was a disaster today
Labour first budget was a disaster. It was a disaster mainly because of McSweeney and his ming case.
Until 4 weeks ago it looked like good progress could have been made in September to start to correct it.
Unless there is a huge and quick c change on ME that is not now possible
Thats why Starmer will continue to pin Act of War Act of Aggression on Badenoch and Farage
Had they have PM we'd have been in middle of a far greater disaster now.
I am no where near as tribal as some right wing posters on here. I admit mistakes if I believe they are unforgivable
Starmer is actively allowing the US to bomb Iran from Fairford, unlike Meloni [Italy] and Sanchez [Spain ] who have distanced themselves from the conflict and refused their air bases to be used or any military involvement
It is not just semantics but plain dishonesty to paint Starmer as standing up to the US
And as far as being tribal, we can all be partisan but your language and weird obsession is just that, weird
Starmer struggled much more again when its Mandelson week. You can draw your own conclusions about why and what that means may be coming out, but it seems to be THE achilles heel
No body is interested in Mandelson
He answered He apologised
A shame Badenoch thinks that is the only issue people are interested in
No one is.

Well that's ok then!
Timothy must go?
If she fails to answer the question fully if put to her, she should consider her position too?
Kudos to the Jewish News journalist who skewers the hypocrisy in Nick Timothy's bleatings.
Why does nobody need to be ordered not to fear Hindus, Sikhs, Jews and Christians?
You need to speak to some Sikhs, plenty of them fear Hindus.

Blogger Ilya Remeslo grew even bolder and went on to write about Putin’s children. And that didn’t seem enough to him, so he added that the Russian dictator actually needs to see a psychoanalyst.
And in other news.....Russian blogger Ilya Remeslo will be tripping and falling off an icy balcony....about this time next week.

Here's a screenshot form a video showing dangerous threats on the tube in Peckham:
The fact there is no tube in Peckham should have been the giveaway here.
Only the Windrush Line on London Overground.

He noted it. Also (being a nerd) that Red Poles = Central Line.
But that particular tweeter has 50k followers and is putting out dozens of tweets a day; it's extreme politics for money-making. That is an indicator of the scale of this stuff. https://x.com/KieraDiss
Yes I noticed the Central Line - passes through Ilford North!

Religionphobia should be legal. A religion is a philosophy, being islamophobic is no different to being conservativephobic.

Starmer is now so weak he’s shelving his own immigration reforms.
I offered Conservative support for reforms to ILR in the national interest. The PM hasn't replied….
If Keir Starmer doesn’t have the backbone to stand up to Angela Rayner, I'm happy to lend him one.
Dear Kemi
You're irrelevant
Thats why he's not answered
It's all in your imagination dear.
Have you sacked Nick Timothy yet?
Gutless coward if not.
If she's irrelevant, it means there are so many rebel Labour MPs that even Tory votes can't save the PM.
Not necessarily the case, it may just be a calculation that a 90 vote rebellion is best avoided even if they could theoretically get 120 Tory MPs in to make up the numbers, as a matter of party management.
Of course, they may be unmanageable, but that's a longer term problem.

Does she just go to hoc once a week and then do everything else on twitter.
Starmer trying to blame the war on Badenoch and Farage might help him get through PMQs, but it's surely an untenable line while US bombers take off from RAF bases in Britain to conduct bombing raids in Iran.

Indeed! Wriggle, wriggle, wriggle from Starrmer...
I thought he sounded desperate at PMQ's today... I think he knows the political tide is rapidly rising over his head...

I am not Hopkins's greatest fan, he often comes across as a Richard Burton pastiche, although he is particularly brilliant (and this will be controversial) in the Fastest Indian.
I was never really in the Bonham- Carter fan club until her fairly recent portrayal of Noele Gordon, her performance put into context how versatile she is.
Balfe and Laird are well on their way to being massive Hollywood stars.

Any relation to S. K. Tremayne?
Depends how far back you go...
S.K. could be seen as a potentially androgynous name. Maybe S.K. is Rose's daughter.

I prefer Hopkins in stuff like 84 Charing Cross Road. I can't stand him as American Ivy League Royalty like in Meet Joe Black. Apparently he does an excellent impersonation of Tommy Cooper.

Certainly not, but we need to be very careful in these matters to not inhibit those who are, because of those who have less cerebral complaints. As with any matters involving speech and expression there are risks to doing something, as well as risks in doing nothing.

Do you know what the most deadly terrorist attack ever in Europe was? It killed 329 people. It wasn’t the IRA or ETA. It wasn’t Islamic State or a Palestinian group. It was the blowing up of Air India flight 182 in June 1985. 329 people were killed.
Who blew the plane up? Sikh extremists. As you say, every one of those religions has included extremists who killed. 99.9% of Sikhs are nothing like those terrorists. 99.9% of Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists are nothing like the terrorists who have killed in the name of those religions.

How is your wife's shoot going? My Hollywood friends are all quite depressed about the state of the industry in LA
They are just finishing some external shots in Devon and Cornwall and it will be done by Saturday (fingers crossed). It seems to have gone very well - have to be a bit circumspect, but she's very pleased with Anthony Hopkins and Helena Bonham Carter's performances and she says that the two central actresses Caitriona Balfe and Emma Laird have been a revelation.
It looks very lush - the team behind the Downtown movies know what they are doing. Hopkins thinks it one of the best things he's done in ages. He loved Rose Tremain's writing.
Caitriona Balfe was mesmeric as the mother in Belfast.
Leaving it late (for an actress) to become A-List, but she's got the talent for it.
"When a Jewish News journalist pointed out that similarly large single sex prayer events are also held by Orthodox Jews in London, Badenoch’s representative replied that the Iftar event was “different”, without explaining how."
Well that's ok then!
Timothy must go?
If she fails to answer the question fully if put to her, she should consider her position too?
Kudos to the Jewish News journalist who skewers the hypocrisy in Nick Timothy's bleatings.
Why does nobody need to be ordered not to fear Hindus, Sikhs, Jews and Christians?
If you've been in areas of Leicester and Birmingham when Sikhs and Hindus clash, to football matches in Glasgow or when various Jewish factions clash, you'll understand there are wrong uns and excesses in all religions.
Islamaphobia is far more common than the others combined because our media is dominated by haters of Islam
There may he wrong uns in all religions, but most religions in Britain don't tend to murder in the name of their religions.
Currently it is mostly Islamic fundamentalism, sure. In my childhood it was mostly the Catholics and Protestants with the bombs and shootings. Maybe in my later years it will be someone else. It is fundamentalism that is the problem, whatever the flavour.

You need to speak to some Sikhs, plenty of them fear Hindus.
'When a mighty tree falls, it is only natural that the earth around it does shake a little.'
Should the Sikhs’ Hinduphobia be banned?
Religionphobia should be legal. A religion is a philosophy, being islamophobic is no different to being conservativephobic.
Do we think most of the people banging on about Muslims polluting western society are just intellectually, morally and philosophically offended by the tenets of Islam and the Koran?
By the same token do those who criticise Israel, come what may, do so because they don’t like Jews ?
Quite probably, but those of us with even a brain the size of a pea (and I am speaking for myself) have the ability to differentiate between the hideous work of Netanyahu, Ben G'vir and Smotrich, and Jewish people going about their business in Fortune Green.

Many do. Certainly not all, but even before the events of the past few years I think we underestimate such things.

Religion often just provides a veneer over an underlying political conflict about power and identity rather than being the cause of it, so it can be an illusion to think that isolating fundamentalists and elevating 'moderate' voices is the key to avoiding trouble.

Here he is reacting to Rupert Lowe:

Oh and evening PB.
.@MayorofLondon @SadiqKhan tells me and @repubblica his reaction to @NJ_Timothy’s words on Muslims’ praying as “act of domination”: “Until a few years ago I expected this sort of comments from the far right and @TRobinsonNewEra. Now these comments are mainstream both in @reformparty_uk and the @Conservatives. These guys are poundshop president @realDonaldTrump”
Islamaphobia is far more common than the others combined because our media is dominated by haters of Islam
I suspect even if we agreed to re-start North Sea drilling tomorrow, it will be months if not longer before that has any impact.
