I am sure if somebody waves another massive cheque and there may be a some bending of those principles. It isn't cheap to fly your hat around the world in first class these days.
I was thinking more that ICE would arrest them at the airport on entry and take them straight to texas "detention" centre.

Well, I am generally uncomfortable about ICEs actions, but in the case of U2, they would be doing us all a favour.

While deposing the Ayatollahs would undoubtedly be a good thing, cowardly custard Trump will chicken out.

    TACO.
Take this from 4chan with a pinch of salt or possibly not.

Taking out the Ayatollahs is absolutely 100% the right thing to do, but there is not a snowball's chance in hell that tactical nukes should or would be used.

Iran are essentially the people behind Hamas and Hizbollah. If the Ayatollahs were nixed, those two would rather rapidly implode, a la Assad after Russia lost interest.
Countries like Syria and Lebanon would stand a strong chance of rebuilding if Iran were de-Mullahed. The Middle East's political thermostat would turn down significantly.

I don’t agree. I think that’s quite a glib statement to say there wont be Shia clerics and militia looking out for Shia populace across the region, after the full of clerics in Iran.

Iran will still exist as a Shia Nation standing up for Shia everywhere, even once current leadership is toppled, even if that’s at all possible to topple them, wont it? Any action just cannot prevent - Shia as militia standing up for Shia populace - what you claim here it can.

If Starmer signs up for any action that includes Israel he will have lost my vote whilst he is leader and I suspect many other Labour voters.

Action with the US, NATO is one thing, to be an ally of Netanyahu is a RED Line too far.

No doubt Tories and Reform would support him but for most on the left it will be a line that would see him out very quickly.
Let the Iranian people suffer under a murderous dictatorship then

To be fair Reform have only announced their top 4 roles in their 'Shadow Cabinet' plus Farage as leader. As Streeting says that does not even yet include their Health spokesman.

There is also not a single Harrovian, Etonian, Wykehamist or Westminster amongst them in terms of the top major public schools and nor did a single one attend Oxford. While they all attended private schools only Farage, Dulwich and Tice, Uppingham went to a major public school.

Braverman went to a school founded only in 1900 in Harrow by a Miss Gaylord, Heathfield. Yusuf to the Hampton day school and Jenrick to an ex state grammar school that only went private in the 1970s.

Only 2 went to Oxbridge too, Braverman and Jenrick being Cambridge alumni

Israeli or indeed any other use of Nukes, would turn the whole exercise into America's Suez in about 24 hours.
    How?
Well for one thing it would embolden Russia to threaten Ukraine with a nuclear strike. It would be a huge mistake to end the nuclear taboo.
That contradicts the idea that it would be America’s Suez which implies that the world would somehow coerce the US into a humiliating retreat.

I’m not sure what I think of this. If the US is really about to launch a regime change operation then we all have to hope against hope that 1. The regime changes, 2. The aftermath is ordered and not at all like Iraq post 2003, 3. The US don’t cynically use this to make money for the leadership at the expense of Iranian people.

I think Iraq-style civil war is far less likely. Iran is a religiously relatively uniform society. Some are devout, some aren’t, but there’s no big Sunni population to run rampant. My worry is what happens to ethnic minorities. It’s going to be like the post-Soviet era, because the Ayatollahs are like the Soviets. Or post-Ottoman. My guess would be a fairly fierce Persian nationalism takes hold. Fine for the West, and Israel. Not so great for the Kurds. But probably better than modern day Iran.

The Iranians do need to watch out for false friends here, though.

LONDON — Two of the world’s biggest trading blocs are cautiously eyeing closer ties to short-circuit Donald Trump’s tariffs.

The European Union and a 12-nation Indo-Pacific bloc are opening talks to explore proposals to form one of the largest global economic alliances, multiple people with knowledge of the talks told POLITICO.

It seems to be about making it seamless to integrate supply chains across the 40 member countries (which includes us of course). That is a total market of $33 trillion and 1.5 billion people.

We’ve pretty much, as the west been doing that while the mullahs slaughter their own people,.
Israel pushing for this because the vicious way the Iranian dictators put down the uprising? Are you bonkers?
    No, but Binyamin Netanyahu is.

Bonkers, but not stupid. He knows that's an acceptable excuse while the real reason - to eliminate the main threat to Israel - isn't.
Do you think this will “eliminate the main threat to Israel?”

    Does anyone actually think that?
    Yes.

Iran are essentially the people behind Hamas and Hizbollah. If the Ayatollahs were nixed, those two would rather rapidly implode, a la Assad after Russia lost interest.
    1) I don’t agree. 2) I think that’s quite a glib statement to say there wont be Shia clerics and militia looking out for Shia populace across the region, after the full of clerics in Iran.

    3) Iran will still exist as a Shia Nation 4) standing up for Shia everywhere, even once current leadership is toppled, even if that’s at all possible to topple them, wont it? Any action just cannot prevent what you claim here it can.
    1) That's your problem.

    2) It's not about clerics, it's about money and weapons. You think they will get those from a few dim mullahs?

    3) Probably, although not certainly.

    4) Since the Gazans are Sunnis not Shias, that point falls anyway. It has more force regarding Lebanon, but not much more where both make up about a third of the population.

Iraq post 2003 would still be an improvement on the status quo, so if that's the worst that can happen hopefully it starts ASAP.

Of course they deliberately addict children, they want to deliberately addict everyone so we spend all our time and money online and in the Metaverse (don't laugh, Zuckers believes in it), I don't know why that would even be a question that needs asking or one they would dispute with a straight face.

Deliberately harming is a different matter, more complicated, and where questions perhaps can shed some genuine light about whether they don't think harm is happening, that some people call what is happening harm but it is not that simple, or they think some amount of harm is worth the benefits.

Sadly for too long too many have turned a blind eye.

Israeli is led by a barbaric mass murderer wanted for corruption that the majority of its own citizens don't want.

The UN must tell Israel that regime change, the handing over of the war criminal to The Hague and fair and free elections and the giving back of all illegally occupied land is the only resolution.

The US, UK and all other States should abide by this.

Until then Israel should be ostracised from Sporting, Cultural and other diplomatic events in the same way Putin and Russia are. There is no difference between Russia and Israel. Illegal occupation.

I see the Tories' great plan to deal with the restoration of Parliament is to..once again kick the can down the road.

I get it, the cost announced recently is never in a million years going to be approved, but the problem is everyone just says that it is too much and taking decades to do it is too long (which is a major reason they need to approve the options which involve leaving the site for the duration), but even if you cut the estimated cost by 75% it is still going to be way more than any government will want to spend.

So 'pausing' to take yet another look at options solves absolutely nothing.

It is going to burn down in the next 10-15 years.

Let the Iranian people suffer under a murderous dictatorship then
Um... like they have been doing every year since we overthrew Mossadegh in 1953. As vile as the rule of the Mullahs is, it is not noticably more vile and murderous than the rule of the Saudis in Arabia, so what exactly is the hurry? Your moral high horse looks pretty hypocritical in the cold light of reality.

Possibly the most chilling film ever.
There’s a plan to make a new version.

Sadly they want to focus on ‘ hope even in the most challenging of times’

    It’s bleak

I’d also recommend ‘The War Game’, released by the BfI

Apropros of nothing, a modest proposal:
The UK is currently run, electorally, by pensioners. As a result, the lot of the young gets more challenging. Student debt and high housing costs impoverish them. And partly (because this phenomenon has many causes) as a result, our birth rate is dropping dramatically. The UK is not alone in this but that does not mean it is not a problem.

I propose we address this by extending the franchise to everyone. Clearly sending toddlers to vote is daft, so I propose that parents be the custodians of their children's votes until the age of 16 or 18.

To those who say this is self-interested given my fecundity: well, a bit: but even if this were implemented tomorrow there would only be one more GE in which I would benefit.

To those who say this sounds like the plot from an old Neville Shute book: well, that's a fair point.

    No and no.
    Okay.

But ONLY way forward is not to have hated enemies by cutting out all the bullying, land grabbing and freedom trampling, and believe there is not a single situation or violent confrontation that cannot be resolved through dialogue.

Israel should appreciate what it was given and abide by international law.

By breaking international law it deserves condemnation. No amount of arrogance should put it or any other Country above the law.

Russian corvette Stoikiy has docked at Bandar Abbas, Iran, Russia’s defence ministry said.

A joint naval exercise between the Iranian and Russian navies is due to take place tomorrow in the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean. (Iran International)

Russian naval vessels are mostly on their own. I'm sure there's a plan to celebrate any achievements they may stumble into, but they've never managed anything, so its a bit moot.
I am curious what happens if an American attack sinks a Russian cruiser
Have you seen the film Threads?

That starts off with a war between the USSR and America in Iran.
It might be an idea to show it again across all channels at the same time.

I recall being made to watch it at school.

Possibly the most chilling film ever.
There’s a plan to make a new version.

Threads is one of the greatest films of all time. My wife and I watched it recently and could barely speak for hours afterwards.

In which case which insurance company was stupid enough to insure it.

But yep the only answer is to move Parliament somewhere else, so just start thinking about where they are going (NEC is a stupid but sensible option given space is required).
The Tory Leader is very good at telling us all what shouldn't happen.

Invariably she has no plan as to what should happen.
They should come up with a phrase for that. something that conveys the lack of actual policies whilst just criticising the government. Then the country would see what an empty vessel she is if she is too scared to actually propose what she would do. Maybe something like The Ming Vase Strategy. Can’t imagine a party would get elected without anyone seriously asking what they would actually do.

Anne Sellors has a marvellous entry on IMDb for threads.

She appeared, uncredited, as ‘woman who urinates on herself’
I believe thats her sole credit as well?
She pisses herself when the first nuke goes off at the airbase near Sheffield and drops her shopping.
Finningley. Now known as Doncaster Sheffield Airport (currently mothballed).

I wonder if the Russians have updated their targeting? Otherwise I'm definitely cooked.

I suppose a massive concrete runway /classified/ feet thick is probably a target whether or not there are any planes on it.

So you're saying they're basically oiks?
Actually, if none of them went to Oxford they might get my vote.

You're not wrong but short of disenfranchising everyone over 65 (which would include many on here as well as the bulk of the Conservative and Reform electorates), the inability of politicians of all parties to be honest at any level about the socio economic challenges brought about by the demographic shift towards an ageing population has got us where we are.

I was musing today on the long term impact of the fall in birth rates - we are supposed to go past 70 million in the UK this year but what are the trends in 25, 50 or 100 years given current fertility rates? Will we, in say 2226, have a Britain with just 30 million people and large areas of former towns and cities abandoned? I won't be here to see it.

One is overwhelmingly supported by the West, the other is not. That helps but will change.

Sadly they want to focus on ‘ hope even in the most challenging of times’

Reece Dinsdale, one of the stars of the original, has said hope is the last thing it should be about. He’s right.

    It’s bleak

I’d also recommend ‘The War Game’, released by the BfI
Threads is one of the greatest films of all time. My wife and I watched it recently and could barely speak for hours afterwards.
I hardly dare admit this, but when I watched it for the first time a couple of years ago I found the last half hour a bit crap. It seemed melodramatically bleak: too much howling wind, too dark, too much grey-scale lighting.

Up to that point, yes terrifying and haunting.

"They are saying to let it go and stop calling us every five minutes, you snowflakes".

Ok, in fairness neo-nazi is a heck of an accusation to make and one Restore will feel is very damaging, but maybe show yourself to have staying power as a 'party' before you start getting into legal battles.

I would be overjoyed if the Iranian government were to be toppled and to be replaced by a liberal democracy of some kind. I think the Iranian people will be pretty happy about that too. However, I must admit I share the concern that weakening or ending the nuclear taboo would be a bad thing.
