It was based on the simulation exercise operation square leg, which was criticised for not having enough aimed at the UK (120 warheads in 3 waves from memory), about 100 megatons total. That was when there were 30,000 active warheads per side, many in the megaton range. A full scale exchange today would see less land here and of lower yield but tbf half a dozen would cripple the UK

From what I've read, it's actually a shade optimistic as to what would happen. I've no illusion as to my life expectancy in London if the missiles start flying but the old phrase "the living will envy the dead" is apposite.
It was based on the simulation exercise operation square leg, which was criticised for not having enough aimed at the UK (120 warheads in 3 waves from memory), about 100 megatons total. That was when there were 30,000 active warheads per side, many in the megaton range. A full scale exchange today would see less land here and of lower yield but tbf half a dozen would cripple the UK
I'd also add, again from what I've read, modern nuclear weapons are less about radiation and fallout and more about heat and blast. They would detonate at height to maximise the thermal and destructive effects so if you can miss the heat and blast, you've a chance at longer term survival but the destruction would be unimaginable.
I see the Tories' great plan to deal with the restoration of Parliament is to..once again kick the can down the road.

Apropros of nothing, a modest proposal: The UK is currently run, electorally, by pensioners. As a result, the lot of the young gets more challenging. Student debt and high housing costs impoverish them. And partly (because this phenomenon has many causes) as a result, our birth rate is dropping dramatically. The UK is not alone in this but that does not mean it is not a problem.
I propose we address this by extending the franchise to everyone. Clearly sending toddlers to vote is daft, so I propose that parents be the custodians of their children's votes until the age of 16 or 18.
To those who say this is self-interested given my fecundity: well, a bit: but even if this were implemented tomorrow there would only be one more GE in which I would benefit.

I was musing today on the long term impact of the fall in birth rates - we are supposed to go past 70 million in the UK this year but what are the trends in 25, 50 or 100 years given current fertility rates? Will we, in say 2226, have a Britain with just 30 million people and large areas of former towns and cities abandoned? I won't be here to see it.

That was when there were 30,000 active warheads per side, many in the megaton range. A full scale exchange today would see less land here and of lower yield but tbf half a dozen would cripple the UK
I'd also add, again from what I've read, modern nuclear weapons are less about radiation and fallout and more about heat and blast. They would detonate at height to maximise the thermal and destructive effects so if you can miss the heat and blast, you've a chance at longer term survival but the destruction would be unimaginable.
Heat and blast are no different now to 1950 and yields are generally lower because the area of destruction does not rise in proportion to the incressed yield so it becomes a waste of fissile material. But yes air burst = wider area impacted by blast waves but no fallout. Ground blast = fallout upwind decaying by a factor of 10 in the square of 7 (10% after 48 hours, 1% after 2 weeks). Hence stsy inside for 2 weeks per protect and survive

I see the Tories' great plan to deal with the restoration of Parliament is to..once again kick the can down the road.
I get it, the cost announced recently is never in a million years going to be approved, but the problem is everyone just says that it is too much and taking decades to do it is too long (which is a major reason they need to approve the options which involve leaving the site for the duration), but even if you cut the estimated cost by 75% it is still going to be way more than any government will want to spend.
So 'pausing' to take yet another look at options solves absolutely nothing.
It is going to burn down in the next 10-15 years.
In which case which insurance company was stupid enough to insure it.
But yep the only answer is to move Parliament somewhere else, so just start thinking about where they are going (NEC is a stupid but sensible option given space is required).

We're probably looking at a brand new purpose-built complex (including accommodation and support services) somewhere in the country. I'm not too fussed where in all honesty - I'll leave that to others. I suppose we could create a Government Newtown somewhere with appropriate transport links.
We'd also have to move the Prime Minister and the Cabinet Office even if the Ministries can stay put.
The Palace of Westminster can become a museum and remain the tourist attraction it does so well.
Why can't they all work from home? It would save an absolute fortune. And it would allow redevelopment of the area by the Thames to make housing, therefore solving or at least ameliorating the housing crisis somewhat.
