I see the Tories' great plan to deal with the restoration of Parliament is to..once again kick the can down the road.

I get it, the cost announced recently is never in a million years going to be approved, but the problem is everyone just says that it is too much and taking decades to do it is too long (which is a major reason they need to approve the options which involve leaving the site for the duration), but even if you cut the estimated cost by 75% it is still going to be way more than any government will want to spend.

So 'pausing' to take yet another look at options solves absolutely nothing.

It is going to burn down in the next 10-15 years.

In which case which insurance company was stupid enough to insure it.

But yep the only answer is to move Parliament somewhere else, so just start thinking about where they are going (NEC is a stupid but sensible option given space is required).
The Tory Leader is very good at telling us all what shouldn't happen.

Invariably she has no plan as to what should happen.
I suspect we've spent more time working out and debating where to move Parliament than Parliament actually has...
Not so, but every time it comes up they act as though nothing has ever been looked at previously, so they can pretend that looking at it some more makes sense!
Parliament is an ugly neo-gothic monstrosity that should be demolished. Sell the site off for yuppy apartments and start again on a derelict industrial site in the north.

Ok, in fairness neo-nazi is a heck of an accusation to make and one Restore will feel is very damaging, but maybe show yourself to have staying power as a 'party' before you start getting into legal battles.

What he means is that Reform aren’t Nazi enough. He considers them complicit with the “race extinction” of whites.

In other words he’s an a loon and an actual Nazi.

Trump’s having a busy day. Sticking the knife into “woke” Starmer on Diego Garcia. While seemingly giving the sign off for the Persian War.

Whatever the rights and wrongs, I hear echoing in my head the confident statement of an American colleague that he voted Trump because he’s stopped taking the USA into Middle Eastern wars.

Typical, I’m off to Egypt on Sunday
While deposing the Ayatollahs would undoubtedly be a good thing, cowardly custard Trump will chicken out.

    TACO.
Take this from 4chan with a pinch of salt or possibly not.

Taking out the Ayatollahs is absolutely 100% the right thing to do, but there is not a snowball's chance in hell that tactical nukes should or would be used.
    Pickelhauben Season again on PB!

Pull round the armchairs. Get out the popcorn.

Let’s enjoy ourselves by ignoring such utterly pointless killing, maiming, and violence.

Unless you care to make a case it’s actually necessary, and totally unavoidable.
If you want to see utterly pointless killing, maiming and violence have a look at what the Ayatollahs have been doing.

Ridding the world of them absolutely has a point.
Weren’t you the anti Arab warmonger telling us the casualty figures put out by Hamas Health Ministry were massively fiddled upwards for propaganda? Do you feel utterly humiliated having said that now?
    No and no.
    Okay.

But ONLY way forward is not to have hated enemies by cutting out all the bullying, land grabbing and freedom trampling, and believe there is not a single situation or violent confrontation that cannot be resolved through dialogue.
Arab states = 22 nations, 13,000,000 sq. km. area
Israel = only 20,000 sq. km. area
    Israel was granted land

    It was a grave error

Israel should appreciate what it was given and abide by international law.

By breaking international law it deserves condemnation. No amount of arrogance should put it or any other Country above the law.

Sadly for too long too many have turned a blind eye.

Israeli is led by a barbaric mass murderer wanted for corruption that the majority of its own citizens don't want.

The UN must tell Israel that regime change, the handing over of the war criminal to The Hague and fair and free elections and the giving back of all illegally occupied land is the only resolution.

The US, UK and all other States should abide by this.

Until then Israel should be ostracised from Sporting, Cultural and other diplomatic events in the same way Putin and Russia are. There is no difference between Russia and Israel. Illegal occupation.
    There is a difference.

One is overwhelmingly supported by the West, the other is not. That helps but will change.

Russian corvette Stoikiy has docked at Bandar Abbas, Iran, Russia’s defence ministry said.

A joint naval exercise between the Iranian and Russian navies is due to take place tomorrow in the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean. (Iran International)

Russian naval vessels are mostly on their own. I'm sure there's a plan to celebrate any achievements they may stumble into, but they've never managed anything, so its a bit moot.
I am curious what happens if an American attack sinks a Russian cruiser
Have you seen the film Threads?

That starts off with a war between the USSR and America in Iran.
It might be an idea to show it again across all channels at the same time.

I recall being made to watch it at school.

Possibly the most chilling film ever.
There’s a plan to make a new version.

Sadly they want to focus on ‘ hope even in the most challenging of times’

Reece Dinsdale, one of the stars of the original, has said hope is the last thing it should be about. He’s right.

    It’s bleak

I’d also recommend ‘The War Game’, released by the BfI
Threads is one of the greatest films of all time. My wife and I watched it recently and could barely speak for hours afterwards.
I hardly dare admit this, but when I watched it first the first time a couple of years ago I found the last half hour a bit crap. It seemed melodramatically bleak: too much howling wind, too dark, too much grey-scale lighting.

Up to that point, yes terrifying and haunting.
I thought it worked well all the way through. The point they were making I think is that there is no ability to build back after nuclear war. You are stuck living in one of the famine years of the middle ages, with added trauma and radiation poisoning. There is no hope. I thought the last third of the film conveyed that pretty well. Obviously the whole thing was made on a tiny budget, but I can't think of a film or TV show where that mattered less.

Anne Sellors has a marvellous entry on IMDb for threads.

She appeared, uncredited, as ‘woman who urinates on herself’
I believe thats her sole credit as well?
She pisses herself when the first nuke goes off at the airbase near Sheffield and drops her shopping.
Finningley. Now known as Doncaster Sheffield Airport (currently mothballed).

I wonder if the Russians have updated their targeting? Otherwise I'm definitely cooked.

I suppose a massive concrete runway /classified/ feet thick is probably a target whether or not there are any planes on it.

Russia doesnt have the warheads to target as widely as it did in the 80s in an all out scenario. And the bombs are generally lower yield (not that proximity to a 250kt is great news).
I'd not want to be too near the naval ports, trident base, Westminster, RAF Northolt, Fylingdales, the major airports, the major container ports or GCHQ. Or the US bases.

His political biases obviously impact his conclusions a lot, but this Wings piece about SNP regional list candidates for Holyrood is interesting for how many, 45/71, are contesting constituency seats. It would be interesting to know if that is more than previously, or unusual amongst the other parties.

I hardly dare admit this, but when I watched it for the first time a couple of years ago I found the last half hour a bit crap. It seemed melodramatically bleak: too much howling wind, too dark, too much grey-scale lighting.

Up to that point, yes terrifying and haunting.
Yes, the aftermath bit was not as good. Nuclear winter..... not convinced
  • If the Iranian regime had the nukes to destroy Israel, would the potential collateral damage to Gaza and the West Bank make them even pause?

To be fair Reform have only announced their top 4 roles in their 'Shadow Cabinet' plus Farage as leader. As Streeting says that does not even yet include their Health spokesman.

There is also not a single Harrovian, Etonian, Wykehamist or Westminster amongst them in terms of the top major public schools and nor did a single one attend Oxford. While they all attended private schools only Farage, Dulwich and Tice, Uppingham went to a major public school.

Braverman went to a school founded only in 1900 in Harrow by a Miss Gaylord, Heathfield. Yusuf to the Hampton day school and Jenrick to an ex state grammar school that only went private in the 1970s.

Only 2 went to Oxbridge too, Braverman and Jenrick being Cambridge alumni

So you're saying they're basically oiks?
Actually, if none of them went to Oxford they might get my vote.
Well they are hardly Cameron and Boris, Eton and Oxford, or even Blair, Fettes and Oxford, or Rishi, Winchester and Oxford or Clegg, Westminster and Cambridge are they.

They may be a bit posher than state sixth form college educated Kemi but they are not even posher education wise than Starmer, privately educated ex grammar like Jenrick with a postgrad Oxford degree.

Indeed even Davey, private school and Oxford is at least as posh as them

The US, UK and all other States should abide by this.

Is it? Wasn't the "year without a summer" in the early 19th century caused by a volcanic eruption that put rather less dust in the atmosphere than a full nuclear exchange between superpowers would, and led to widespread crop failures and food shortages? With a similar but more severe event hypothesized for 536, the "worst year to be alive"?

From what I've read, it's actually a shade optimistic as to what would happen. I've no illusion as to my life expectancy in London if the missiles start flying but the old phrase "the living will envy the dead" is apposite.
It was based on the simulation exercise operation square leg, which was criticised for not having enough aimed at the UK (120 warheads in 3 waves from memory), about 100 megatons total.
That was when there were 30,000 active warheads per side, many in the megaton range.
A full scale exchange today would see less land here and of lower yield but tbf half a dozen would cripple the UK

It's not as though budgets will be huge, post apocalypse.

I couldn't believe some of the numbers that were being bandied about recently for the Westminster repairs. Just mental.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvgp2pzqr84o

Decamp the lot to a modern building and be done with it.
Even with the absurd top end estimations it is much much cheaper to decamp for 15-20 years so it can be done properly, there really is no reason at all that should not be done.
Decamp permanently and get them out of London.

Create a Canberra somewhere that can serve as a seat of government without all the distractions of a major city.
It's rare I agree with you but having seen some of the costings for the repairs to the Palace of Westminster, I think you're right.

We're probably looking at a brand new purpose-built complex (including accommodation and support services) somewhere in the country. I'm not too fussed where in all honesty - I'll leave that to others. I suppose we could create a Government Newtown somewhere with appropriate transport links.

We'd also have to move the Prime Minister and the Cabinet Office even if the Ministries can stay put.

The Palace of Westminster can become a museum and remain the tourist attraction it does so well.

Have you seen the film Threads?

That starts off with a war between the USSR and America in Iran.

Threads is one of the greatest films of all time. My wife and I watched it recently and could barely speak for hours afterwards.
It is very very good. Although the 'science' of nuclear winter is questionable
Its the amount of dust that is questioned now for a full exchange, whether modrrn cities really would be engulfed in firestorms. Theres plenty of research available to read online. Its certsinly not a settled science

It is very very good. Although the 'science' of nuclear winter is questionable
Its the amount of dust that is questioned now for a full exchange, whether modrrn cities really would be engulfed in firestorms. Theres plenty of research available to read online. Its certsinly not a settled science
Sounds like we need some empirical results.

Was it not the sulphur dioxide that caused the volcanic cooling rather than the dust (albeit there were many cubic km of that)?
Yeah. Theres a theory that a big enough evenf like Younger Dryas can cause devastating cooling via sulphur dioxide albedo reflecting sunlight away followed later by rapid devastating warming via greenhouse effect

I'd also add, again from what I've read, modern nuclear weapons are less about radiation and fallout and more about heat and blast. They would detonate at height to maximise the thermal and destructive effects so if you can miss the heat and blast, you've a chance at longer term survival but the destruction would be unimaginable.

Indeed even Davey, private school and Oxford is at least as posh as them
Sounds like we need to clear out the lot of them!
Well given the last comprehensive educated PM was Liz Truss I don't think that went much better!
I know, she was a real disaster for us comprehensive school folks. Nobody in their right mind would allow us to run anything larger than a school fete after the whole Truss debacle.

Apropros of nothing, a modest proposal:
The UK is currently run, electorally, by pensioners. As a result, the lot of the young gets more challenging. Student debt and high housing costs impoverish them. And partly (because this phenomenon has many causes) as a result, our birth rate is dropping dramatically. The UK is not alone in this but that does not mean it is not a problem.

I propose we address this by extending the franchise to everyone. Clearly sending toddlers to vote is daft, so I propose that parents be the custodians of their children's votes until the age of 16 or 18.

To those who say this is self-interested given my fecundity: well, a bit: but even if this were implemented tomorrow there would only be one more GE in which I would benefit.

To those who say this sounds like the plot from an old Neville Shute book: well, that's a fair point.

You're not wrong but short of disenfranchising everyone over 65 (which would include many on here as well as the bulk of the Conservative and Reform electorates), the inability of politicians of all parties to be honest at any level about the socio economic challenges brought about by the demographic shift towards an ageing population has got us where we are.

I was musing today on the long term impact of the fall in birth rates - we are supposed to go past 70 million in the UK this year but what are the trends in 25, 50 or 100 years given current fertility rates? Will we, in say 2226, have a Britain with just 30 million people and large areas of former towns and cities abandoned? I won't be here to see it.
My proposal doesn't disenfranchise the over 65s - just addresses the disenfranchisement of the U18s - who may not be old enough to form a judgement that we trust but whose interests we ought to reflect better than we do.

Threads is one of the greatest films of all time. My wife and I watched it recently and could barely speak for hours afterwards.
It is very very good. Although the 'science' of nuclear winter is questionable
I'd also add, again from what I've read, modern nuclear weapons are less about radiation and fallout and more about heat and blast. They would detonate at height to maximise the thermal and destructive effects so if you can miss the heat and blast, you've a chance at longer term survival but the destruction would be unimaginable.
Heat and blast are no different now to 1950 and yields are generally lower because the area of destruction does not rise in proportion to the incressed yield so it becomes a waste of fissile material. But yes air burst = wider area impacted by blast waves but no fallout. Ground blast = fallout upwind decaying by a factor of 10 in the square of 7 (10% after 48 hours, 1% after 2 weeks). Hence stsy inside for 2 weeks per protect and survive

Why can't they all work from home? It would save an absolute fortune. And it would allow redevelopment of the area by the Thames to make housing, therefore solving or at least ameliorating the housing crisis somewhat.
It's very hard to do the weekly chorus of "Bah! Bah! Mah!" or "Hurrah! Hurrah!" and the paper-shaking line-dance when you WFH.

That alone is worth a few 10s of billions of taxpayer money? Surely we can all agree on that?

    ... Surely?

Trump tells Starmer to pull the Chagos deal

What a plonker he is. We should play silly buggers in return. Say, ok, we'll forget the leaseback part and if the US military want to stay there he can talk to Mauritius.
Starmer is doing the deal (he claims) to secure the base. Giving it up entirely to annoy Trump would be TDS on steroids
Why should we put ourselves out politically and financially to secure a US base over there when the US president keeps fucking us about on it?
It's not Starmers deal any way, it's a Tory deal dumped in his in tray.

He should tell Trump, he either rubber stamps it or we sell it to China for 500bn

For anyone interested in the British attitude to nuclear war and civil defense in the USSR days i recommend War Plan UK by Duncan Campbell if you can find a copy
It has notes in from one of the exercises which demonstrates how inadequate our civil defece planning was. And it was better then than now.......

I hadn't heard of that. I'll have to find a copy. While I was doing a lazy scouting about for it came across this - which is... quite something.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frmwacJFtzk

Care of the Homeless (1965)- Nuclear War Planning in Bath - UK BFI
The notes in It are taken from Operation Square Leg (from a regional civil administrator in the West Country i think) which was also used as part of the planning for Threads. Threads does capture nicely the inadequacy of Civil Defence in the UK
Those scenes of the council officials in the basement trying to coordinate things were... quite brutal. Unlike the rest of the film which was joy and light.

We tried that in summer 2020, and it made the likes of Jacob Rees-Mogg sad. Remember the socially-distanced voting lines?

(Yes, the Palace of Westminster is a magical place, and I totally get the emotional attachment MPs have for it, and moving out for 20 years is basically an entire parliamentary career. But the place is a blooming death trap.)

    What's he got to lose

A senile delinquent in the White House.

    A willing buyer

    200bn one off deal

200bn on UK PLC books for 2026/2027

We'll throw in Pritti, IDS and Kearns as part of the deal.

Would transform the UK in 2 years.

Indeed even Davey, private school and Oxford is at least as posh as them
Sounds like we need to clear out the lot of them!
Well given the last comprehensive educated PM was Liz Truss I don't think that went much better!
I know, she was a real disaster for us comprehensive school folks. Nobody in their right mind would allow us to run anything larger than a school fete after the whole Truss debacle.
Wouldn't trust us to run a bath.

But since the bath is full of coal, the point is moot.

    Garbage.

Its UK territory. Tell Mauritius to f**k off and that if they want to claim it, they'd have to fight us (and the USA) for it.

Well, I am generally uncomfortable about ICEs actions, but in the case of U2, they would be doing us all a favour.

I was at Guildford Cathedral today.

I think they must be trying to get @rcs1000 to sponsor them. They were advertising an evening of Radiohead.
Isn't that something youd keep quiet about ?
I don't think there's anything very embarrassing about being at Guildford Cathedral. It may not be Lichfield or Lincoln but it's a decent building in a fine location.
