Reform: Tribunus plebis – politicalbetting.com

Nothing screams more than man and woman of the people than having an exclusively privately educated Shadow Cabinet but as David Cameron (and to a lesser extent Boris Johnson) proved being a posho is nor bar to winning general elections.

A fascinating 10 minute segment from Heather Cox Richardson (Yank historian, huge on Substack/Youtube) on why Trump's FCC Chair Brendan Carr is going for James Talarico, a Member of teh Texas House of Representatives, and bending the rules to keep his interviews off the air.

Trump's core remaining solid base is white nationalist Evangelicals. Talarico is an 8th generation Texan & a former seminary student, who is attacking them theologically on the basis that Christian Nationalism is a perversion of their faith, as it erases "Love your neighbour" from the Great Commandment * "Love God and love your neighbour".

I don't think it would be so effective here, because many of the Christian Right types eg who were out with Tommy, seem to be cultural, rather than credal, Christians. A lot of them just want a symbol to let them identify with an imaginary past.

They seem to have a problem with he explicit commands running through what they say are their Scriptures to care for the foreigner and the refugee. Or that in 2026 in the UK, the Good Samaritan would be a Good Muslim or a Good Sikh.

(The Evangelical Alliance UK have a very useful classification of Christian Nationalist views based on distinguishing "cultural" and "credal / confessing" Christians and Nationalists - that they call cn, Cn, cN or CN.)

If Nigel actually wanted to destroy the country and not just the Conservative Party, he couldn't have chosen a better bunch of reprobates. But we probably deserve it having voted for this crowd previously.

Someone on the Govt side needs to start talking about "The Conservative Party and The Other Conservative party".
  • What was interesting was Nigel's response when questioned on it yesterday;

It's clear that plenty of those in the hall loved it, but is it the sort of attitude that will survive a General Election campaign? I rather hope not, because this isn't the US of A, thank goodness.

Why? They are both people who have been utterly let down by the people who stitched the Birmingham Six up for a quick win.

The sad thing for me is (a) most police officers are not, and were not corrupt and (b) I would not be surprised if/when more police scandals emerge about current corruption (the Met waves).

If Streeting believes that Reform will go into the next (or any) election on a manifesto to amend the core principle of health provision being universal for UK citizens and others who have acquired the same rights, funded by taxation and free at the point of delivery he is deluded and knows little about the voters of Clacton and the 325 other seats Reform need to win.

Reform may be insane in a number of ways, but not that one.

If Starmer signs up for any action that includes Israel he will have lost my vote whilst he is leader and I suspect many other Labour voters.

Action with the US, NATO is one thing, to be an ally of Netanyahu is a RED Line too far.

Won’t it just be logistical support. Use of US airbases and reconnaissance missions. More supporting Israel and the US rather than direct action.

Like the U.K. did with Gaza.

I find it inconceivable the U.K. or other key allies in Europe and the region won’t be aware of what is happening.

Anyway you’re new here. You’ll find a few who will be delighted by any action Israel takes against anyone.
  • This supports my long held view about Reform - it's not a party for the underprivileged but for those who feel their privileges are under threat. The same with Brexit, it's all about being a big fish in a small pond.

It might be the thread that unites the upmarket and downmarket bits of Reform. And there's no cruller, or more universal, way of removing privileges than getting old.

There are a couple of other issues about UK evangelicalism that are relevant. The UK version has only a small % of the population identifying with its evangelicalism, so it is much less powerful. Also, that quite small group is extremely divided about doctrine, denomination, forms of worship and morality (evangelicals don't much like talking about this with outsiders) that it is extremely hard, despite valiant attempts, to define it in such a way as include an identifiable group with real boundaries but also some contents. Its love of splitting is legendary and never ending.

Interesting efforts are being made by the HTB movement and the wealthy Paul Marshall to organise and fund it better. Results so far are patchy.

Having said all this, on the whole (I am not one) they are very nice people. Mostly far too nice to have time for Trumpism, 'Jesus, Guns, Babies', or Farage. Or of course oiks like Robinson.

Will need more than a 100 seat majority to maintain control in Westminster. Lets face it beyond deport immigrants, Reform are a hotchpotch of different ideas and solutions, of course they don't stick together once they have to make real world decisions.

The cesspit of journalism that deserves the fate of the NOTW
The claims were reported by more than the Mail and he has admitted inappropriate behaviour.

He resigned before he could be properly investigated,

‘ Inappropriate but consensual relations between Cox and female staff in the department he headed were an “open secret,” O’Keefe said. Although behaviour at the office was generally professional, O’Keefe said she had witnessed “inappropriate behaviour” by Cox at after-hours gatherings, office parties and events.

Junior staff risked being sidelined and excluded from the more prestigious and important projects if they questioned Cox’s behavior, O’Keefe said. “I myself feel complicit,” she said, adding that she now regrets not speaking up. “We were afraid to speak to Justin… I was often afraid.”

Cox, married at the time, made little effort to conceal his extra-marital relationships with staffers. “It was so brazen it didn’t make sense,” O’Keefe said. Jo Cox, Brendan’s wife, was elected an MP in 2015 but murdered in June 2016 by a right-wing extremist, an event which caused public outrage. Brendan until last week was a director of a charitable foundation formed in her memory to support values of tolerance.

O’Keefe said Cox was reported for a sexual assault on a fellow staff member in 2015. Save the Children suspended him and launched an investigation. The night before a hearing into his alleged misconduct, O’Keefe said, Cox resigned in an email, a copy of which she provided to IRIN. In it he wrote: “apologies to all of you for any times I’ve been unreasonable, overbearing or relentless, it was always with the best of intentions.”’

Will need more than a 100 seat majority to maintain control in Westminster. Lets face it beyond deport immigrants, Reform are a hotchpotch of different ideas and solutions, of course they don't stick together once they have to make real world decisions.
    Probably more than that.

I mean what is labours majority and SKS cannot get basic legislation making simple changes to WFA or benefits through them. He’s hamstrung.

If Starmer signs up for any action that includes Israel he will have lost my vote whilst he is leader and I suspect many other Labour voters.

Action with the US, NATO is one thing, to be an ally of Netanyahu is a RED Line too far.

No doubt Tories and Reform would support him but for most on the left it will be a line that would see him out very quickly.

The claims were reported by more than the Mail and he has admitted inappropriate behaviour.

He resigned before he could be properly investigated,

Although behaviour at the office was generally professional, O’Keefe said she had witnessed “inappropriate behaviour” by Cox at after-hours gatherings, office parties and events.

Junior staff risked being sidelined and excluded from the more prestigious and important projects if they questioned Cox’s behavior, O’Keefe said. “I myself feel complicit,” she said, adding that she now regrets not speaking up. “We were afraid to speak to Justin… I was often afraid.”

    What was interesting was Nigel's response when questioned on it yesterday;
    https://www.youtube.com/live/cuILCLp_p5U?t=4639

It's clear that plenty of those in the hall loved it, but is it the sort of attitude that will survive a General Election campaign? I rather hope not, because this isn't the US of A, thank goodness.

I think sadly it's becoming that way. I doubt there's anything Farage can say that will make a difference to his core vote.

Those that read the FT are likely to be similar establishment figures who think they'd benefit from a very right wing party run by other establishment figures like Farage.

Those that see him as a hero of the working class are getting their news from the internet, and I suspect have long since passed the point where they could be affected by anything a general election campaign throws up.

I recently set up a Facebook profile for a new business, so am following nobody. Instead it just throws random stuff at me - and it's not hard to see why people fall for it. There was fuss in the papers recently about the Reform flyer not having the Reform address on it. Yet, on social media you get 100s of mocked up flyers shared every day mostly with ridiculous pro-Reform nonsense, or fake ones pretending to be about or from the Green party. The time when a PPB or a single poster launch could actually make a difference, or change people's minds, are long gone.

It is a fact universally acknowledged, a politician with a Health Portfolio will be in want for policies they could answer on, when asked questions about them.

But equally true, the more Reform talk about their NHS policies, the quicker they return to 0% in opinion polls.

Fifty second day of continuous frost here, though it may go a degree or two above freezing next weekend, it is an unusually cold winter in Tallinn (currently -10 with a windchill of -20) but today the Sun was dazzling on the snow after the Ash Wednesday service and we now have nearly 11 hours of daylight, as opposed to barely six in December, so it is definitely late winter now. My friends and family in Aberdeenshire have hardly seen the Sun since before Christmas, so I think I have the better of it.

Subsequently, information that these reporters were ‘under investigation’ by the NCSC was then passed on by a law firm, acting on Simons’s instructions, to journalists at national newspapers. Holden has stated publicly that in February 2024, he received an email from Pippa Crerar of the Guardian, informing him that the paper had seen information that he was being investigated by the security services and that the Guardian intended to run the story. Holden stood firm and told Crerar that the claim was defamatory and warned that he would sue if it were published. The story then evaporated, and Holden heard nothing whatever from the NCSC. One can only speculate how the security services regarded these attempts to draw them into political disputes.

It may appeal to his core but they need a broader appeal

Pointless trying to appeal to people viscerally opposed to them, middle class centrists for example and diehard FBPE remain, but there are others who would consider them who would, I suggest, be less inclined to vote for them

As for whining about mocked up Green stuff or Reform stuff on social media. You get it for all parties. I’ve seen genuine ones for all and mock ups for all. It’s tedious and I block any but it is a bit rich to blame one party when they all pretty much do it. The least worst offenders are the Lib Dem’s I’d say.

Could the Iranian missiles reach Washington? Have they got any suitable missile carrying ships at sea?

In any event I hope we keep well clear of whatever Trump's planning.
No, but they could hit Saudi and they could hit other allies in the region.

Reassuringly, and I’m sure it’s unrelated, Russia has been conducting military excercises in the Strait of Hormuz with Iran.

If it goes belly up so be it. I’ve had a nice life by and large

I, on the other hand, am, nowadays, slightly surprised when I wake up in the morning!
My joy at making it through another night is tempered by all the aches and pains. That and the toilet trips during the night !

It is a fact universally acknowledged, a politician with a Health Portfolio will be in want for policies they could answer on, when asked questions about them.

But equally true, the more Reform talk about their NHS policies, the quicker they return to 0% in opinion polls.

Reform want to win the election. No UK election can be won by a party renouncing the core principles of health care for UK citizens, universal, funded by taxation and free at the point of delivery.

It therefore follows that Reform's manifesto will not commit to significant change in these regards.

Not a great advert for private schooling, frankly

Striking thought though - the last leader who had a fully state funded education to win a majority at a general election was John Major.

Starmer - bursary for 6th form after Reigate went private
    May - no majority
    Cameron and Massive - Eton
    Blair - Fettes.

Farage's lot seem rather like the Authorised Push Payment fraudsters chasing me at the moment. They pretend to have policy but it's only to look legitimate, to get you to vote for them. They don't believe in any of it.

Even recent scandals in the Met have roots back to the '70s.

Taking out the Ayatollahs is absolutely 100% the right thing to do, but there is not a snowball's chance in hell that tactical nukes should or would be used.

But I assumed that would be the fault of the Mullahs for not backing down and forcing Bibi to Nuke them 😉
There's no need to nuke them, conventional weapons should be used instead, agreed?
If they are going to take any action, I’d agree.

    I’d agree. They haven’t even got a spokesman/woman let alone a policy.

I’d love to see NHS reform but it’s a national religion. Reform of the NHS is off the agenda.
We won't finally know Reform policy on anything until they publish a 2029 Manifesto. Until then it is knockabout around Reform will abolish NHS etc.

Prediction: while their manifesto will contain a few deliverable retail offers, it will actually be fairly Ming Vase like: renege on all exotic previous offerings, provide enough ethno-nationalism to get the votes but not be suggestive of 1930s Germany, renounce removing citizenship or curtailing ILR, support NATO, make few if any promises on tax reductions, sustain the broadly social democrat high spend/high tax deal in place since Attlee, reform welfare, try to close the borders a bit more, close a few universities, fund apprentices, put children up chimneys.

Talarico is an 8th generation Texan & a former seminary student, who is attacking them theologically on the basis that Christian Nationalism is a perversion of their faith, as it erases "Love your neighbour" from the Great Commandment * "Love God and love your neighbour".

    https://youtu.be/y26XxXhTIQg?t=2660

    * Matthew 22:35-9
One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 l The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

Talarico just loves taking on MAGA with scripture.

Yes - I mainly agree. I've followed HTB for years and years.

Marshall is too closely integrated between his faith and his particular politics imo, and is pivotal enough that he could snap or derail the whole thing after half a century of creative contributions to the wider church.

He's a massive contrast to eg Ken Costa or Trisha Neal.

Iran are essentially the people behind Hamas and Hizbollah. If the Ayatollahs were nixed, those two would rather rapidly implode, a la Assad after Russia lost interest.
