Dream ticket for Vance you mean! An arrogant rich California Democrat as their nominee with a far left woke Israel hater from New York as his running mate is guaranteed to turn middle America off.
Buttigieg or Shapiro or Beshear might worry Vance and the GOP, Newsom and AOC would not
Almost anyone could beat Vance, assuming fair election in 2028.
Perhaps if Trump's approval ratings continue to be in the toilet but Vance is clever and ruthless and grew up in poverty in Ohio, which was the ultimate swing state until 2020 and got himself to the 2nd most powerful job in the land by cunning and hard work.
Gavin Newsom's father meanwhile was attorney for Getty Oil and AOC's father was an architect and neither have shown any ability to connect with swing voters in the rustbelt, they have only been elected in safe Democrat states.
AOC has dropped her pronouns and has adopted Bernie Sanders priorities, in particular, cost of living.
A 2025 AtlasIntel poll found her to be one of only three major political leaders with a net positive image, with 46% of Americans viewing her positively compared to 44% negatively.
AOC recently toured Arizona and Nevada with Bernie Sanders, where they attracted record-breaking crowds (including 34,000 in Denver, Colorado).
A July 2025 poll of "Biden skippers"—voters in battleground states who sat out the 2024 election—found that 78% had a favorable view of Bernie Sanders, the highest of any Democratic-aligned figure.
I'm not suggesting her for President - too young, short, woman, brown - but as a VP complement to Newsom (tall, white, male, presidential). It's a ticket that reaches Bernie Sanders supporters. AOC is young enough to bide her time as VP for two terms if necessary.
It's a strong combination.
Those two are a Republican strategist’s dream ticket.
So much winning by RUssia. They also appear to be losing territory in a Ukrainina counter - territory it cost sthem many ts of thousand dead to acquire. If so, the whole Russian strategy in Ukraine of swapping bodies for land is collapsing.
I think Starmer's big idea is to sail HMS Prince of Wales on a week long cruise around Iceland.
If he’s the only GB gold medalist he’ll almost certainly be on the shortlist.
Betfair exchange has its market up. Probably not much liquidity, but I see George Russell is a short price. Are Mercedes expected to do well? I see a lot of people are not impressed with the new cars.
Yes the rumour is that Mercedes have a good car.
The new cars in general are not going brilliantly in testing, there’s a lot of energy management required from the hybrid powertrains, they’ll probably be slower than the old cars.
On last nights Restore Britain launch and prospects. Rupert is way too radical to win a GE but hes exactly radical enough to hoover up the genuine 'last chance salooners' from Reform (and Tories of that mind not convinced by Farage) who are sick of the 'we will just rerun Boris cabinet' approach. And he will hold Yarmouth at a canter. Reform at 29% are winning. Reform at, say, 24% start falling just short everywhere.
Yes I expect Kemi and SKS are rather more delighted Lowe has started his own party than Farage is
Lowe is quite likely to go non aggression with the Tories. Quite a few of them have supported some of his initiatives and he seems to genuinely like quite a few of them. He will try and burn Reform to the ground though for what they did to him. I can see Rosindell ending up double jumping to him although Lowe seems anti defection
Being a deeply unpleasant lunatic has never traditionally been a bar to political advancement in Britain but Rupert the Bore doesn't seem to have any countervailing positive qualities. His policies are a bit Mein Kampf-y and 'Deportation NATO' is like something this c-nt would have thought of.

Sounds like a pressure group for a local branch of the National Trust.
If Lowe manages to field 50 candidates I'd be surprised.

It's only mood music but some reckon the Mercedes engine might be top for power but Red Bull seem to have dialled in their electrical deployment/recharging (essential this year due to the 50/50 split). On tracks that have easy recharging may advantage the Mercedes, but where it's harder that could help Red Bull have the edge. However, Leclerc's and Hamilton's long runs looked good and the reliability of the Ferrari engine is fantastic, seemingly.

I think this is the worst of both worlds.
if you put someone controversial but who is also a good communicator on the ticket, they're going to be attacked and they need to be able to take up a whole news cycle hitting back. They can't do that if they're only VP nominee, they won't have enough control of the news and to the extent that they do it'll distract from the presidential candidate's agenda.
Running AOC would be a gamble but it's a gamble with a decent upside. To get the upside of the gamble, she needs to actually be the nominee.
You make a good point. That is a danger with AOC as VP. It would require a close working relationship between Newsom and AOC to agree strategy, priorities and lines to take. But it could be magic.
Newsom officially integrated AOC into his strategy to pass Proposition 50 so they have worked together.
He featured AOC in high-profile digital ads, including a version in Spanish, where she urged Californians to "not back down from a fight" against the Trump administration.
Private research from the super PAC Future Forward revealed that AOC's "direct-to-camera" ads were significantly more effective at persuading and mobilising voters than those featuring Newsom himself or even former President Barack Obama.
Both leaders are currently attending the 62nd Munich Security Conference together to reassure world allies that "Donald Trump is temporary". Newsom is focused on California’s role in climate action and formalising partnerships with Ukraine, while AOC is tasked with delivering a "working-class vision" to counter global populism.

They'd have to board them which takes a lot of resources and the whole thing could easily go to rat shit in the middle of the channel. Nobody in government wants to be watching that unfold on Sky News. It's a lot of risk with no benefit.
The other question is Would Labour simply let the egregious Khan walk into another Labour mayoral candidacy without any challenge at all?
There must be lots of london labour politicians who are thinking “I could do a better job than this dreary teetotal dwarf” and “why the fuck does he get four terms unchallenged?”

Elections are being cancelled in May because the councillors would only be in office for a year.
And yet we've just had a by-election to Bradford council, less than 3 months before all-out elections.
Tory hold, btw.
Reform wrote to the Returning officer demanding it (the Tory councillor died very shortly before the cut off for May, the Tories werent going to call it and waste 30 grand of taxpayer money) I suspect if anything this increased the size of the hold
The prime minister’s leadership rivals are likely to be better prepared for the next moment of danger and this list of potential successors is growing. Nandy is being mentioned in conversations among soft-left MPs as a potential carrier of their flame and her forthright interventions this week have done her little harm
Starmer talks the talk and intends sending a carrier fleet to the Artic North this year, another half a billion pounds to Ukraine, and ramping up UK defence but there is a rather important obstacle
Where is the money coming from ?
His increases are pitiful and spread out over 10 years, which is not consistent with his rhetoric
He also demonstrates his lack of common sense by launching a UK domestic attack on Reform and the Greens at an international conference, which shows he has become paranoid about them
He gives them more publicity in a way that he doesn't realise may not be to his benefit

Bed blocking probably is one of the problems- see those promoting the idea of Seb Cor for Mayor. But equally... what if hardly anyone wants the job?
Ken clearly did- the GLCA was his Rosebud. For Boris, it was a useful way to work passage back to the big time. It got Sadiq out of the madness of the Corbyn years.
But then look at their defeated rivals. Ken beat Steve Norris and Frank Dobson, Boris beat Ken, Sadiq beat Zac Goldsmith, Shaun Bailey and Susan Hall. I doubt that many Londoners are wistfully sighing "if only X had become Mayor..."
Apart from Andy Street, has the Mayoral system thrown up anyone interesting, anyone who isn't a wannabe or a retread politician? Something, either the powers or the process, isn't working.

Apparently Reform petitioned for a by-election. As is allowed for in the regulations. They've done it before, can't remember where, possibly Somerset.
Yes the Tories had decided not to call an unecessary extra election given the councillor will be in post for 2 months only and all out elections on new boundaries follow but Reform put their parts on because they thought they had a sniff and forced it by sending in 2 letters as required to the RO. The deceased Tory councillor passed away less than a week before the 6 month cut off.

Rupert Lowe is presumably doing his own thing for the same reason, that he doesn’t want to be associated with the more extreme end of Advance support.

Big 'we've fluffed all other possible candidates, she's what's left' vibe.
Ties in with Ed Miliband not wanting it.
He wants it, he absolutely wants it, I know somebody who used to work for him and they say he will run and win.
What the issue is that the last time Ed ran for Labour leadership it tore apart his family, so this time he's burying his ambitions publicly.
Both OGH and I heard independently when Ed ran in 2010 he had no plans to become leader, he decided to run so he could do well and get a decent Shadow Cabinet job without it looking like nepotism.

I think she's got appeal. She's very down-to-earth, Mumsnet friendly, but doesn't come over as completely dim. She'd be a better PM than Starmer, and if she's lost head to head polls with him, I suspect its unfamiliarity.

It is not just that no-one wants it, no-one, and no party, takes it seriously. Even now, the Conservatives see the Mayoralty as a consolation prize for Cleverly or a gold watch for Sebastian Coe. The Tories, and we see it on here, are defeatist – London is a Labour city, apparently forgetting Ken won as an independent against a Labour Cabinet minister, let alone two terms for Boris. Hence putting up no-hopers like Susan Hall and Shaun Bailey.

The after-the-colon names on the Star Trek movies are below (captain actors in CAPITALS)
SHATNER The motion picture The wrath of khan The search for spock The voyage home The final frontier The undiscovered country
STEWART Generations First contact Insurrections Nemesis
PINE Into darkness Beyond
Next time you do a "wrath of khan" reference, you may wish to see how many you can fit in 😎
So Sadiq Khan is floating the idea of a fourth term. For some, it all feels a bit like the motion picture dragging into another instalment, same protagonist, bigger claims, higher stakes.
His critics will say this is the wrath of Khan in slow motion, particularly out in the outer boroughs where policy changes have landed hardest. Supporters counter that there’s still a search for Spock quality to the job — something unfinished, a sense that the core mission isn’t complete.
The pitch, if it comes, will almost certainly be framed as a voyage home: steady the ship, sort transport, tackle housing, make the city feel navigable again. But four terms starts to sound like the final frontier of what a mayoral stint is supposed to be.
We’re arguably heading into the undiscovered country politically anyway. The capital’s mood has shifted. Costs are up, patience is thinner, and the electoral maths isn’t what it was. There’s a clear generations divide too, with younger voters and long-time homeowners often seeing entirely different cities when they look out the window.
If he does go again, it’ll require something like first contact with groups that feel alienated, along with a careful avoidance of outright insurrection from those already bristling. Every long tenure breeds its nemesis eventually, whether that’s crime figures, congestion, or simply fatigue.
Still, campaigns are always sold as renewal. As if the future begins again every cycle, even when the cast list hasn’t changed.
Whether London wants another sequel is a separate question. Some voters value continuity. Others are ready to recast. Either way, the debate is only just starting.
Nadhim is being pursued by insomniacs. End of days stuff. The day Farage introduced this idiot with a glitzy video package was the beginning of the end for them

Starmer uncorked and bolder on Munich is what many have been waiting for.

The clear evidence is a growing majority want closer ties economically and practically but not a full blown return.

He can now pitch that without fear of Reform, knowing the EU still destroys the Tory schism and can outflank LD and Green with pragmaticism over piped dreams.
It can be of he grasps it his legacy and a great boost for British Business too.
Take on the dinosaurs Farage, Lowe, Badenoch...
Closer closer closer ties.

Can’t image any of his stuff getting past today’s TV executives and commissioners. Perhaps he’d find a home on Netflix.
The satire of The Day Today and Brass Eye is as relevant now as it was 30 years ago. Probably more so.
How has it come to pass that we’re now more afraid of biting satire than we were. Which is not to say he didn’t ruffle feathers at the time - which was the entire point.
The Brass Eye episode on drugs, is one of the funniest pieces of satire ever to appear on television.
The odds on her being the Democrat candidate is 11.5 (9%) on Betfair. Second favourite behind Newsom.
I think the dream ticket for the Dems is Newsom with AOC as his VP. Newsom provides the look (white, male, tall, presidential) and a strategy that can widen the appeal beyond the core. AOC provides the fire and energy that will get out the core vote. Width and depth.
I think AOC would be a good VP candidate although she may choose to bide her time so that she can run either in 2032/2036 when she would be (I think) 45-50.
AOC + Newsom would be a disaster - reinforces the coastal state narrative
I think State of origen is a bit exagerrated in importance. How much did having Walz on the ticket help Harris in the Midwest?
Trump is New York to the core yet wins in Alabama, and does anyone realistically think Buttigeig could flip Indiana or Beshar flip Kentucky?
So much winning by RUssia. They also appear to be losing territory in a Ukrainina counter - territory it cost sthem many ts of thousand dead to acquire. If so, the whole Russian strategy in Ukraine of swapping bodies for land is collapsing.

The Day Today and BrassEye had moments of genuine genius. The IRA leader who had to inhale helium between sentences 'to subtract credibility from what he was saying' And the entire interview that leads to war between Australia and Hong Kong
So much winning by RUssia. They also appear to be losing territory in a Ukrainina counter - territory it cost sthem many ts of thousand dead to acquire. If so, the whole Russian strategy in Ukraine of swapping bodies for land is collapsing.
There was a period in Q4 of last year when it appeared that Ukraine was finally being overwhelmed and their resistance was starting to crumble but, for whatever reason, the balance now seems to have swung back the other way and it is Russia that is struggling. Given that the US has provided almost nothing over this period (other than some intelligence) it appears to me from the outside that the driving forces for this are remarkable leaps in Ukraine drone technology and the loss of Starlink for the Russians. supported by a much more determined European response.
Rubio's comment that no one is winning is probably fair but if you had to pick a winner right now it wouldn't be Russia.

Starmer to claim 'lamps would go out across Europe' under Reform UK or Greens
If he’s channelling Edward Grey he’s digging deep!
I wonder if Starmer knows his speech writer is warning of a third world war.
I sometimes wonder if this was what his court appearances were like. Someone gave him a script that he didn't really read or understand but he could deliver with that slightly weird combination of earnestness and bafflement that he specialises in.

AOC makes Kamala Harris come across as coherent and well-spoken. Can anyone explain what she’s trying to say here?

Err, that's it.
The new cars in general are not going brilliantly in testing, there’s a lot of energy management required from the hybrid powertrains, they’ll probably be slower than the old cars.
If Lowe manages to field 50 candidates I'd be surprised.
There must be lots of london labour politicians who are thinking “I could do a better job than this dreary teetotal dwarf” and “why the fuck does he get four terms unchallenged?”
He’s bed blocking younger labour Londoners
And yet we've just had a by-election to Bradford council, less than 3 months before all-out elections.
Tory hold, btw.

I suspect if anything this increased the size of the hold

Steve Swinford:

Habib not bothered about any position within Restore and confirms hed wanted Lowe to lead Advance
Could work. Last time Prince of Wales visited the area it survived while the Hood blew up and sunk.
The deceased Tory councillor passed away less than a week before the 6 month cut off.
Rupert Lowe is presumably doing his own thing for the same reason, that he doesn’t want to be associated with the more extreme end of Advance support.

She's always had Shadow and Ministerial roles possibly a little below her ceiling, not sure why.

Can the electoral commission have a rule that no more parties beginning with 'R' can be formed?
