Keir Starmer is determined to fight on. The iron has entered Andy Burnham’s soul. And Wes Streeting will not let this battle pass him by. We are in for an extraordinary few months in Westminster. Buckle up!
alexmassie@alexmassie·1h Anyone who believes this shouldn’t be trusted with a spoon, let alone anything else. (Burnham’s mere presence in the Commons destabilises the government. That’s why he wants to be in the Commons!)
Robert Peston@Peston Will this promise from Andy Burnham be enough for Starmer loyalists on Labour’s ruling NEC to let him stand in the Gorton and Denton by-election?
Burnham: “I would be there to support the work of the Government, not undermine it, and I have passed on this assurance to the Prime Minister” https://x.com/Peston/status/2015111650752217323
Look at the words. supporting the government is consistent with the belief that the best way to do so is to be the PM. 'Supporting SKS as PM' are the words that have not been said.
Just want to say thanks to the Labour government, whose rising rates and taxes and general fucking ineptitude have just abruptly closed the St Andrews cafe where my older daughter had a waitressing job she really liked

There’s a second video of the new shooting, again clearly showing the man had both hands on the ground when shot. But @Sandpit says it’s Tim Walz’s fault.

If a US cop claims to be scared for his life, however irrational, isn't he allowed to blow a suspected bad guy away?
There was an effort to arrest witnesses and seize their phones after the shooting. While they made a number of arrests they clearly failed in that effort.
Dept of Homeland Security put out the usual pack of lies.
In the UK, any time a policeman kills someone, whatever the circumstances, there is an automatic independent investigation. The Trump administration has blocked any investigation of the ICE officer who shot Renee Good, and told staff to investigate Good and her widow for criminal behaviour instead.
Do people here still think comparisons with 1930s Germany are ludicrous?
The administration is already briefing (along with a bunch of lies) that it was a justified shooting. Before any investigation at all.

No, but it highlights the oppotunity and danger for King Andy.

Personally I like Trump because he enables me to escape my non-commital comfort zone of banal, milquetoast opinions.
Albeit aided by it being generally accepted wisdom in these parts.
As all know I don't believe in such a thing a thing as a "national character". It's just a pseudy conversational construct to facilitate lofty-sounding assertions. It's a shame I think this because otherwise I could (and would) say that Donald Trump represents the purest distillation of the worst aspects of the American national character.
Andy Burnham played a key role in privatising our NHS while serving as Health Secretary.
Andy Burnham voted for the 2003 Iraq War — an illegal invasion that led to the deaths of over a million Iraqis.
Andy Burnham was a member of Labour Friends of Israel, an apartheid state that has committed genocide against the Palestinian people.
Gorton and Denton deserves a genuinely socialist MP — one who doesn’t vote for illegal wars, stands in solidarity with Palestine and is proudly anti-Zionist.

The iron laws of politics stay true: no-one who reaches the very top is entitled to stay there as of right. SKS can and will only stay PM as long as he leads and fights better than all of the rest. Those are the terms and conditions of the deal.
In 'An Horatian Ode upon Cromwell’s Return from Ireland' a masterpiece of Andrew Marvell he reflects on the political transition going on before his eyes. Speaking of Cromwell, despite his being a force of nature of great power and genius, Marvell closes thus on his future:
The same arts that did gain A pow’r, must it maintain.

Because it’s really clear that they are.
It's not really clear to me, or I imagine to anyone in Minnesota.
It's really clear that ICE are killing random people and it seems probable that's due to orders from the Paedo Protector but I don't see that is the *Minnesotans* trying to engineer a civil war.
Rumour is that the brass hats at the Pentagon were furious with him, and rightly so.
The GREAT and very BRAVE soldiers of the United Kingdom will always be with the United States of America! Has it been looked into where Trump has got his Sturmabteilung from? Surely many who signed to ice under previous administrations may not be comfortable continuing in this new direction, so left or still there but uneasy with how it’s going and reputation they are earning?
All those people Trump pardoned, the militia he often spoke warmly of, is that the new recruiting ground? Are they inside the ICE uniforms?
How many have come back from Palestine straight into ICE jacket, because there was some research into how many of those were the sort of rum American’s.
The government's stated rationale for this killing is that the victim was carrying a legal firearm.

Yeah what is their argument here?
In the videos he was never threatening. He never reached for his gun. He had already been pepper sprayed and tackled to the ground by several ICE agents for being in their general vicinity before they decided to murder him.
By the logic of him being killed, the police could justly kill any person in American carrying a firearm legally. Which, for better or for worse, is a lot of people.

PB is going to be offline for the next hour or so as I delete every thread I've written saying Andy Burnham won't succeed Sir Keir Starmer.
At least you had the prescience to include the question in the PB Competition: 9. Will Andy Burnham will be an MP on 31st December 2026?
As a recap for those who missed it, to enter the competition this year: post your answers the the following questions with the tag #competition or PM me you answers before the end of January 2026:
The questions: 1. Number of net gains (or losses -ve) for the Dems in the House? 2. Number of net gains (or losses -ve) for the Dems in the Senate? 3. Number of MSPs won by the SNP at the Holyrood election? 4. Number of AMs won by Plaid Cymru at the Senedd election? 5. UK Party recording the largest poll lead during 2026 and by what percentage? (British Polling Council registered pollsters only.) 6. Labour’s Projected National Share of the vote based on the 2026 local elections according to the BBC? 7. Number of Reform MPs on the 31st December 2026? 8. The name of the UK Prime Minister on 31st December 2026? 9. Will Andy Burnham will be an MP on 31st December 2026? 10. UK borrowing in the financial year to November 2026 (£132.3bn to November 2025)? 11. UK GDP growth in the 12 months to October 2026 (1.1% to October 2025)? 12. Winners of the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup?
I can't see what is so great about Andy Burnham anyway. It's not as if he is really well known, or charismatic as Boris was when he went from Mayor to MP in order to become PM. By doing what he is doing, he risks annoying a large chunk of Labour MPs and voters anyway, it seems odd
Greg Bovino says the bad guy was about to do maximum damage (massacre) ICE agents despite already having his side arm removed before he was executed. He was carrying and concealing in a carry and conceal state. All the observers have now been taken away by ICE. Trump supports Bovino's assessment.

The main character is great and the setting should be really interesting. Instead its plodding and boring and deliberately prods the anti side of "wokeness", while pandering to the look hot chicks do dumb shit that even the dumbest hot chicks in the real world don't actually do.

Someone with your legendary modesty would admin that occasionally they may be wrong.
Yes, as I wrote in this header.
Because it happens so rarely I don’t mind admitting when I get it wrong and turns out I was wrong to criticise the Turnip Taliban who tried to deselect Liz Truss in 2009 when her affair with Tory MP Mark Field became public.
I dismissed them as dinosaurs but it turns out they were visionaries and I wish them well in their plan to oust Liz Truss at the next election, the clips above show why the only office is she is fit for is Microsoft Office and I have my doubts about that.
Democrats can and must make it clear there will be trials and anyone even somewhat associated with ICE will face them. Maybe give a quit-your-job deadline on appeasement and give people 72 hours. I don't know. But currently the plan is to let them murder us in the street and get away with it.
The level of violence the Trump administration is directing against its own citizens is unmatched in American experience since the depth of the Southern segregationist violence vs civil rights protesters. Soon the only relevant yardsticks might be authoritarian regimes abroad
Folly. There is no good outcome for Burnham, Starmer or Labour here.
If Burnham stands, and wins, they have an expensive and probably damaging by-election (even if they win) for the mayoralty plus a media circus over Burnham's ambitions.
If he is barred from standing, Starmer will look weak, but won't go anywhere, so we have a lame duck government a la Rishi Sunak.
If he stands, and loses, he's wrecked himself as Mayor, Labour have lost a seat, and Starmer still looks weak and ineffectual as he can't win their 37th safest seat.
Andy Burnham isn't Prospero - he's Macbeth.
There is a Johnsonian sense of entitlement in Burnham's announcement. For this alone, Burnham is unsuitable for high office.

Tim Walz didn't decide to murder two US citizens in cold blood with a group of armed, masked thugs.
The blood is only on one party's hands. And they will excuse it away the same way other authoritarian governments do.
Every other state does.

In 'An Horatian Ode upon Cromwell’s Return from Ireland' a masterpiece of Andrew Marvell he reflects on the political transition going on before his eyes. Speaking of Cromwell, despite his being a force of nature of great power and genius, Marvell closes thus on his future:
The same arts that did gain
A pow’r, must it maintain.

It's really clear that ICE are killing random people and it seems probable that's due to orders from the Paedo Protector but I don't see that is the *Minnesotans* trying to engineer a civil war.
* 37 year old, white, American.
* Had a concealed carry permit.
* Was an ICU nurse. Serving both at the local hospital and the VA caring for veterans.
* He was filming ICE when they shoved him, pepper sprayed him and shot him.

The very people that told us we need to accept mass child slaughter for the right to protect ourselves from scary Obama, now say the govt can kill you if you possess a weapon.

"Damn. The state are killing people with a properly permitted gun. That wasn't drawn. what is a Survivalist to do?"
No bounce for Farage and Reform either after the Jenrick and Rosindell defections.
Some good news for Davey too and bad news for Polanski as the LDs and Labour take votes from the Greens

Gov. Tim Walz: "Thank God we have video, because according to DHS, these seven heroic guys took an onslaught of a battalion against them or something. It's nonsense, people. It's nonsense and it is lies."

This isn't a humblebrag by the way, I have laid him at an average of 13
A U.S. official says that the Department of Homeland Security is investigating the shooting incident with the assistance of the F.B.I.
NY Times
Just LOL.
All those people Trump pardoned, the militia he often spoke warmly of, is that the new recruiting ground? Are they inside the ICE uniforms?
How many have come back from Palestine straight into ICE jacket, because there was some research into how many of those were the sort of rum American’s.
Burnham speculation bounce ?
In the videos he was never threatening. He never reached for his gun. He had already been pepper sprayed and tackled to the ground by several ICE agents for being in their general vicinity before they decided to murder him.
By the logic of him being killed, the police could justly kill any person in American carrying a firearm legally. Which, for better or for worse, is a lot of people.
Trump throwing around the word "insurrection" again.
If you're living somewhere outside the USA, one thing you can do is pressure your leaders to boycott World Cup and Olympic events here.

Jeez I just absolutely loathe them for what they’ve inflicted on the USA and the rest of the world .
"Malice" on the other hand, is fantastic, if extremely uncomfortable viewing. I am four episodes in, two to go

If you don’t get Landman you are clearly a cultural wasteland. Simples.
There will be more violence before this ends
No, what Starmer really needs to fear is a by-election in Angus and Perthshire Glens because it has been foretold that:
"He shall never vanquish'd be, until great Burnham would to high Dunsinane Hill come against him"
The level of violence the Trump administration is directing against its own citizens is unmatched in American experience since the depth of the Southern segregationist violence vs civil rights protesters. Soon the only relevant yardsticks might be authoritarian regimes abroad

After skipping season 1 coz everyone says it’s crap
It’s ok. It’s diverting. It’s better than Pluribus, or season 2 of the fungi thingy
The Golden Age is over, tho. There is still great TV, if you look hard, but that wonderful era where you were swamped with endless brilliant dramas, with 10 more to watch, has concluded

I’m possibly beginning to regret my vote for Skyr
