Is the Lyon vs Tel Aviv going ahead in late November?

Pretty sure Lyon has a high % of people who might choose to cause trouble around the game as Birmingham seems to have in the judgment of the police.

It's the other way around, so not in Lyon. Maccabi Tel Aviv's other two away games are in Germany against Stuttgart and Freiburg. No way the Germans will ban them.

Sir Keir has his enemies, but his intervention over the Maccabi ban is perhaps one of the bravest moves by a British prime minister on a point of principle that I can recall. If the ban is overturned (as I suspect it will be imminently) then any ensuing trouble will be his sole responsibility and he will have to go. To quote Andy Marr in another context: '... it would be entirely ungracious, even for his critics, not to acknowledge that tonight he stands as a larger man and a stronger prime minister as a result.'

Starmer should not be involving himself in operational police decision making.
Operational police decisions are how to deliver the tasks they're set. Telling jews they're not welcome because we don't back ourselves to control antisemites is not an operation decision, it's a political one.

It's now clear the Government has known this was coming for a week, but at least the reaction of decent people has shocked them in to action eventually.
The online discourse in woke circles like on Reddit is that the Maccabi fans are all hooligans and it is they who causes or provoked all the violence in Amsterdam and will do the same in Birmingham. Now, they probably are hooligans, and probably did provoke a response, but the total and absolute absolvement of any responsibility for those who went on “jew hunts” and the like is mind blowing. I just don’t get it.

I sometimes make these reasoned points on Reddit but I just get downvoted to oblivion, so it’s pointless.

Britain has always been a sanctuary for Jews and it always should be.”

Badenoch was asked if the police should reverse the decision:

“Yes, they should. And if not, the Home Secretary should get involved. Last week, she was telling us uh all the things that she wanted to do for Jewish people. I didn’t believe her then. I remember when she was lying down in front of a Sainsbury’s because it was selling Israeli goods. They need to give confidence to Jewish people in our country. How can anyone think mass Islamic immigration has been good for this country? If you’d have showed that list of incidents to the most pro immigration politician from the 60s they’d have accused you of grotesque scaremongering
Yeah but we got curry. Swings and roundabouts
It would be interesting to know from pro multiculturalists how bad it would have to be for them to concede that it was a failed experiment. Pre 1960s, countries were far more of a monolithic bloc of people. Globalism and the lack of emphasis on integration have created the mess we have today. I doubt anyone from the 60s would believe the fractured state of England today, and how we kowtow to Islamic ways

Bombing, rapes, sectarianism etc aren’t enough. Maybe nothing is? There will be a decent sized tail of Islamic MPs in Parliament wagging the dog soon. Will that be the tipping point? Too late I’d say
I suspect we have passed the tipping point already.

Out of curiosity, by what mechanism is it proposed to decarbonise shipping? Batteries aren't going to cut it, and sailing ships went out of fashion a while time ago for a reason. A few people tried nuclear powered ships, but I'm not sure I fancy thousands of panama flagged nuclear reactors sailing round the globe...!

I suspect that this is just a cash grab in leu of doing anything about it.

“Green party calls for all Israeli teams to be banned from international competitions because of events in Gaza

“The Green party has issued a statement on the Maccabi Tel Aviv fan ban, in a comment from its co-deputy leader, Mothin Ali, a Leeds councillor.

“He has criticised Keir Starmer for trying to over-rule an operatational decision taken by the police. Ali said:

“Everyone should be able to feel safe when they attend a football match, that’s non-negotiable. It’s irresponsible for Keir Starmer to question a safety decision of a local authority, especially when he is responsible for their chronic underfunding.

“Ali went on to implicitly defend the plan, but he also went much further – saying all Israeli teams should be banned from international competitions because of what is happening in Gaza. He said:

“Under normal circumstances, supporters from across the fanbase should be allowed to attend and provision taken to ban violent elements such as The Ultras. But these are not normal circumstances: these games are taking place in the context of thousands of civilians being killed in Gaza, the illegal occupation of Palestinian land, and the upholding of a system of apartheid.
This raises serious moral questions for the UK, UEFA, and the wider football community. We need a sporting and cultural boycott of all Israeli teams, like we saw for South African teams under apartheid”

    (Guardian liveblog)

The Greens really have parked their eco-tanks on Jezbollah’s allottment. THEY are going to be the pro-Palestinian Islamo-Marxist party

It is such a strange evolution for a movement that began with saving newts and protecting bats. They seem to have forgotten all that

I wonder how older Green Party members feel about all this. Some must be really unhappy

The Greens didn't do too well in one of the local elections yesterday in Staines.

    Staines:
    LD 804
    Reform 499
    Ind 261
    Con 231
    Green 163
    Lab 158
    Tusc 8

    Lib Dem gain from Green

    LD 37.85% [new]
    Ref 23.49% [new]
Ind 12.29% [new unless comparing to the previous ind]
    Con 10.88% [-4.73]
    Grn 7.67% [-27.84]
    Lab 7.44% [-14.07]

The Greens also came third in a Parish council seat in Buckhurst Hill yesterday which was won by Reform, the Parish council is currently Green led

Most likely though she won't increase income tax, national insurance or VAT in line with the Labour manifesto. However she probably will freeze the income tax threshold and increase capital gains tax and possibly have a mansion tax too

    IHT is in her sights
I doubt she would be that stupid, if she is Labour will be 3rd or even 4th in most polls soon
She has no good options. She’s fucked the economy with terrible decisions and now she has to raise taxes in a way which will be hideously unpopular - and breaking her promise; it’s also likely she will chase even more rich people away from London - the exodus is already large (the telegraph has been writing about it all week)

That screws the london economy and thus the uk economy and also shrinks our tax base so she will probably make everything worse, again, and end up with less tax than before. So she will have to come back for more taxes. And so on

We are in a doom loop. We are New York City in the 1970s
And maybe New York City in the 2020s if Mamdani wins its Mayoral race next month given his hammer the rich with tax and abolish billionaires platform
It is not within the mayoral powers to abolish billionaires.
The Mayor has powers over property taxes etc though

Some of the members maybe, Starmer is not stupid enough to require taxpayers to fund it.

Otherwise Labour would fall to third or even 4th, certainly in seats outside the inner cities and university towns.

If a few wealthy old aristocratic families and companies like Barclays want to give some reparations for owning slaves or investing in slave trading companies from the 17th to early 19th century so be it, most British people won't and nor should they as their largely working class or peasant ancestors at the time had no involvement in it at all
    The CoE does as well.

I suspect some form of ‘reparations’ will come via the foreign aid budget in future.

Lenny Henry has written a book on it too.
Yes and Lenny Henry's plan was made, taxpayers will not accept higher taxes to fund a higher foreign aid budget to fund reparations.

If you wanted an early Christmas present for Farage that would be it
His and his fellow authors interview in the Guardian, which is pretty favourable to his cause, makes it clear it’s long term borrowing needed to fund it.

‘ Even though it sticks in our throats that we were still paying for the compensation to slave owners until 2015, that’s a really good example of how you borrow money and pay it back over a long period of time. There’s loads and loads of ways. And so people should not be scared that reparations would bankrupt Britain.’

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/sep/24/lenny-henry-marcus-ryder-the-case-for-reparations-slavery
As Truss found out, the markets will not allow long term unfunded borrowing

The Green Party Deputy Leader Mothin Ali, however, said "under normal circumstances" all fans should be allowed to attend, but also called for a sporting and cultural boycott of Israeli teams because of the war in Gaza

He obviously didn't get the memo about the ceasefire.

There is a war in Gaza. Hamas v other armed militias.

Not really - they can increase council tax a bit and that's it...

King Charles to pray with Pope Leo.

That would be an ecumenical matter.

I’m afraid we are going to have to have an exemption on the limit of council tax increases for a year or three and allow larger increases to fund the obligations.

Kemi going in high off her feet with a two footed challenge..

Badenoch has spoken to broadcasters on the football fan ban:

“This is a national disgrace. This is something that the police should be able to deal with. We cannot be a country where we tell Jewish people that they can’t come to watch football because their security is not going to be looked after. What I want to see is the police finding ways to make sure they can be secure and sending the message to the Islamists and those who are pushing anti-Jewish hatred that this does not happen in the UK.

And if the Home Secretary can’t do it, then the Prime Minister should. He needs to show that he’s got a backbone and isn’t so weak that he will just allow Jewish people to be terrorised here

For once at least she is absolutely right. Said the same thing myself last night. This is a national embarrassment .
It truly is. I am actually embarrassed to be English on the back of this. How anyone can deny that multiculturalism has failed is beyond me. Of course plenty of Muslims are perfectly nice people, same as any other group, but the blasphemy laws, the Batley teacher, the PB unmentionable, 7/7, Lee Rigby, Manchester Arena, London Bridge, the crazy Islamic MPs, and now this. How can anyone think mass Islamic immigration has been good for this country? If you’d have showed that list of incidents to the most pro immigration politician from the 60s they’d have accused you of grotesque scaremongering
Yeah but we got curry. Swings and roundabouts
    Muslims invented curry, you sure?

Sir Keir has his enemies, but his intervention over the Maccabi ban is perhaps one of the bravest moves by a British prime minister on a point of principle that I can recall. If the ban is overturned (as I suspect it will be imminently) then any ensuing trouble will be his sole responsibility and he will have to go. To quote Andy Marr in another context: '... it would be entirely ungracious, even for his critics, not to acknowledge that tonight he stands as a larger man and a stronger prime minister as a result.'

Starmer should not be involving himself in operational police decision making.
Is interesting how so often politicians use that as a get out or use it to shut down anybody criticising the police decisions, then all of a sudden they wade in.
I recall when Sir Ian Blair said that accidentally shooting brown people was just one of those things.

Boris Johnson told him that he’d lost the confidence of the people of London. And so another head of the Met resigned.

This was condemned by some as “politicising an operational decision”.

    From BBC...another very questionable decision.

Last week, the SAG advised cancelling the annual Diwali Mela festival in Handsworth following the Manchester synagogue attack.

A curfew would make the police's job a lot simpler.

Entirely for everyone's protection from crime, of course.

FPT: I see Governor Pritzker agrees with me that he was imprudent by winning such a large sum in a card game -- which explains why he is donating his winnings to charity. (Which charity he did not say in his statement.)

Being downvoted to oblivion on Reddit for simply stating a contrary opinion (rather than an insult, etc) is extremely alienating. I think it was the most disheartening experience I've ever had online.

One news story to watch today.

A knife edge vote on measures to reduce pollution / emissions by shipping at the IMO.

A large majority of the world is in agreement, and Trump is throwing a tantrum at the last minute.

    https://splash247.com/too-close-to-call-imos-make-or-break-vote-to-define-shippings-decarbonisation-path/

People have experimented with kites and you could do a certain amount by using cleaner fuels - gas turbines instead of heavy fuel oil, for example, but that only takes you so far.

I think the most likely solution would be using excess renewable electricity for the production of synthetic fuels, but part of the purpose of a tax would be to provide a financial incentive for private investors to invest money in potential solutions and let the market sort it out.

Ideally, perhaps, you would achieve the same incentive by offering rewards, rather than imposing penalties, but all governments are skint, so a tax is more practicable.

FPT: I noticed that the discussion of income distribution in the US neglected the importance of culture.

Three nuggets to remind all of you of that importance: Milton Friedman was once told by a Swede that there were no truly poor in Sweden, which is mostly true. Friedman replied that there were no Swedes in America who were poor, which is also mostly true.

In The Millionaire Next Door, the authors mentioned that Scots in the US were twice as likely to be millionaires as their English counterparts.

In Beyond the Melting Pot, the authors mention that Italian-Americans had caught up, and passed, Irish-Americans in wealth, in spite of immigrating later, and not speaking English when they arrived in the US. (The Irish chose to go into government jobs, where they could; the Italians were more likely to go into small businesses.)

This weeekend is the Reparations conference.

Dig deep taxpayers. It’s coming. More and more in Labour support it.

    https://www.appg-ar.org/uk-reparations-conference-2025-agenda

Why is it that African slavery is the unique situation demanding reparations? Why cannot the nations conquered by Rome Perdue modern Italy? How can anyone have the ledger truly established? It’s nonsense.
Because the Dukedom of Savoy had bugger all to do with ancient Rome?
